How to install Guitar Rig 5 and Reaper then use them to record music.

  • I see a lot of videos about installing Guitar Rig 5 and Reaper separately, and videos about setting them up to work together, and still other videos that talk about using each one separately I figured I'd throw together one short video showing the whole process. There's still much more cool stuff you can do such as setting up a MIDI controller to be your "pedalboard" in the real world to activate different effects, etc. but you can find other videos about that... until I get bored enough to make one.
    I've got a write-up with additional info at my blargh sheekgeek.org/
    Download Guitar Rig 5 Player from here: www.native-ins...
    Get Reaper from here: reaper.fm/downl... (if you like it, buy it, it's REALLY good) but it's free without limitations if you don't have the cash.
    Google: "Guitar Rig 5 presets" to find bajillions (honestly not as many as you'd think...) of presets created by other folks to sound like bangs/songs/artists/styles, etc. All free stuff.
    Final note: If you have issues with delay or latency, this forum post that might be helpful www.native-ins...

    You'll have to check out how to reduce latency in your USB interface first. Make sure that without guitar rig it has low latency *through* your DAW (not direct monitoring from the interface) then look up how to reduce latency in guest rig. In that order. If you try to fix the guitar rig latency first you made be working on the wrong past of the problem and it'll never get worked out. Different interfaces have different drivers and methods for adjusting latency so start there. Good luck!

    • @adamharris6557

      Make sure the path to your VST folder is listed in Reaper's path to look for VSTs as I mention at about 2:45. This is sometimes a stumbling block for me depending on what VSTs's installer thinks is the default and sometimes it'll put it in some weird place. I try to add them to Reaper when I come across a new one. Right now this is what I have in the VST Plug-in path. It might be different for you obviously, but you can see how many there are in my setup:
      C:\Program Files\REAPER (x64)\Plugins\FX;C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3;C:\Vstplugins;C:\Program Files\Steinberg;C:\Program Files\VstPlugins;C:\Program Files\Scuffham Amps\S-Gear_VST;C:\Program Files (x86)\Scuffham Amps\S-Gear_VST;C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VSTPlugins;C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VSTPlugins 64 bit;C:\Program Files\Steinberg\VSTPlugins 32 bit;C:\Program Files (x86)\Steinberg\VSTPlugins;C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit;C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit;C:\Program Files\Native Instruments\VSTPlugins 64 bit
      If this is correct (especially those last couple talking about Native Instruments folders) then click the "clear cache/rescan" button on that same preference page under the path box.
      Another thing you might try is to try to make sure it installed correctly by using guitarRig's standalone program which is part of the installation. You can find it from the windows menu and search for "Guitar" and it should pop up in the list somewhere. Or you can try with another lightweight basic audio editor called Audacity which is free. This way you can check to make sure the installation isn't hosed up somehow if if works in these other options.
      If you still have issues, I recommend sending Native Instruments helpdesk as they seem to be really responsive and helpful.

    How's your guitar connected to the pc? I'm using a behringer, should I plug the guitar to the behringer? how should I configure it then? You got me a couple of steps ahead but your are taking for granted things. It is very hard to find somebody who would tell the story from the beggining to the end without skipping any taken for known fact.

    • @adamharris6557

      Any usb interface will work. I used a behringer usb interface for a while, then switched to a focusrite Scarlett. Some pedals like the Pod HD500x and missing board also serve as an interface though. You can also go old-school and take the 1/4” line-out from a mixer or amp into the 1/8” line-in of your computers audio card...

    Hey! I have a burning question: when I recorded my guitar, and play it back, I can’t hear it. I have headphones plugged in, my speakers on, but I don’t hear anything.

    Also, how to save it as MP3?

    • @adamharris6557
      @adamharris6557  2 года назад

      Check in your audio preferences to make sure your output device is set correctly, and check the "monitor" value for each track. To output as MP3, file-->render and select mp3 if I am remembering correctly. It might be called "LAME" which is the mp3 encoder.

    • @adamharris6557
      @adamharris6557  3 года назад +1

      I used OpenBroadcasterSoftware (OBS). I showed the app in the beginning of this video. I had to record the audio separately because it doesn't let me record guitar and voice at the same time in this video. So the entire video I was recording my voice in Reaper as well as my guitar. I then used openshot or shotcut to combine the audio file with the video.

    Hi Bro. I already installed GR5 player and used it many times now my problem is when i add the free plugin(STL) i cannot find GR5 on my reaper. Any idea or way of fixing it

    • @adamharris6557
      @adamharris6557  4 года назад

      I haven't used STL tones plugins before, but I can't imagine why it would cause the problem you are having. First, I'd try to run GR5 in standalone mode, from your windows start menu. If that works, then you know it isn't completely hosed. Then I'd try making sure that the GR5 installation is still where reaper is looking for it. If you go to reaper's preferences you can see the folders that it will search to find VSTs for. If the path to your GR5 install isn't in that list, then add it and have reaper search for VSTs again. If that doesn't seem to be the problem, try reinstalling GR5, then restart reaper. If none of that works, I'd email native-instruments support. Good luck! I hope you get it working!

    • @adamharris6557
      @adamharris6557  3 года назад +1

      Hmm, You may be able to do it in reaper if you use the built-in MIDI keyboard device (it maps keyboard keys to a virtual piano's keyboard by pressing Alt+B or selecting View-->Virtual MIDI Keyboard).
      Lets say you press the "z" key on your computer keyboard, that'll send a signal to reaper's built-in MIDI keyboard which then sends the appropriate MIDI command to Guitar rig. Guitar rig was actually designed to be controlled using MIDI so you should be able to easily set that up in the settings, and since Reaper has the built-in MIDI keyboard, you should be able to control it. I haven't done it myself, but I'm sure there are other videos showing how to connect the virtual MIDI keyboard to a plugin as control instead of as music.
      Good luck and if you get it working, Let me know what you get working. You can make a screencast and post it to youtube with screencast-o-matic or other free app.
