  • As we all know the Miyagi-Do way is balance through forms. Kata is a major staple in the Miyagi-Do system. In this video, Sensei JD Olsen shows us a traditional karate kata or prearranged form called Empisho. Empisho means First Elbow form. The one presented here is the way that the American Karate Association taught the form throughout the 90s when I was learning Shorei-Ryu Karate under Sensei Kevin Casey. I hope you enjoy the video and remember balance.

I been researching bunkai for about a decade on and off, and to my research and experimenting, most of the bunkai of these forms are grappling/trapping/dirty boxing techniques and throws which got banned throughout history of karate.
As for the movement, you're doing at 4:05 it is basically a lever where you use the hand pushing down on the neck of opponent and the hand pushing up on opponent's crease of elbow, so it is a sort of throw/ rupture balance. Try it out
I think you have a lot of experience in other martial arts in order to reveal the real bunkai and scrap all these half baked ideas of twisting samurai horns and so on.
I am curious to know how many martial arts you know since every week I see you with another martial art, awesome, keep at it.
I would recommend you did a bunkai collab with ian abernathy, that would be an epic episode. Also from my understanding you know jujitsu, I would advise you try experimenting karate "blocks" with gi grips.
    Osu!

I love your reply and I think you are totally right. Although, I think so of those far fetched ideas are why I liked them in the first place. Reminds me of a simpler time when we got money from the tooth fairy and a bunny somehow laid eggs.
But I see your points and think I might do just that and break them down from a more mature perspective and see what I come up with.
Thank you for the view and for the thoughtful comment.

@@martialartsunlimited01 true, but a lot of karate masters took their bunkai's to the grave and a lot of misinformation spread throughout the years.
Wow that's a long list of mayhem, you ain't messing around, it would be cool if you did a montage of all the arts you learned in a fighting sequence flowing from techniques, doing it in the order you learned the arts. Letting your subscribers know more of the credentials you have to offer, you're basically a one man army. However I hope you spend more time helping out the aikido community with how to set up techniques in hand2hand combat and making it more practical while staying true to the regiment of aikido.
Just a suggestion here making a mini series called the aiki-lab where you breakdown aikido techniques and concepts and how to sparr them, first video I would recommend tai-sabaki and ma-ai and shomen ate (footwork, distancing and palm to opponent's face). I'm just throwing some ideas and I appreciate your content and hope to see more coming on a regular basis.

Consider that big turns in kata are often considered as a throw or take down. Approach the low block where you turn your back with that in mind and you might be surprised what you come up with.

Yeah, Sensei Judo Josh is big into kata bunkai and we have been discussing these and breaking them all down.

From what they showed in the original trilogy, Miyagi-Do was centred around the Seiyunchin kata.

No problem, I realized I made a mistake and posted the clip with that left in it. Meant to use a different clip. But then again we all make mistakes and I thought it was good to show that too
