It's a small thing, but the episode where Sideswipe doesn't want to believe the possibility of Grimlock being a traitor all along is kinda sweet. It makes sense for his character too, of course he would latch on to a fellow misunderstood youngster with a criminal record, the only of his teammates that didn't want to arrest him or assumed the worst of him. Grimlock being a traitor would probably have made him feel even more alone and miserable than he already was.

I like that very much, but also , I think Sideswipe sees Grimlock as the same age, though I think Grimlock is at least a young adult who just thinks irrationally. But yeah, Grimlock is kiddish, so Sideswipe getting attached to him makes sense. Plus, Grimlock is the only bot on the team that doesn't try to correct or, in Sideswipe's mind, control him about his actions.

There are 2 Sideswipes in this continuity. WFC Sideswipe and RID Sideswipe. There is a WFC Sunstreaker, too. RID Sideswipe probably was named after WFC Sideswipe, just like how RID Grimlock took on the name of WFC Grimlock.
@swankytable84 But there is a Sunstreaker in this continuity. RID belongs to the Aligned Continuity along with the WFC, FOC games and TFP. There is a WFC Sideswipe and a WFC Sunstreaker.

Remember that Cybertronians have personality components holding key traits.
Maybe poor Sideswipe was created with abandonment issues and he just couldn’t help misinterpreting situations, like we see in the series.
@@clogs4956 in Prime or I guess the whole aigned continuity cybertronians are more biology than technology, their minds can grow and mature just like us, Smokescreen was one example, he started off rash and hotheaded, disobeying orders and such, but at the end of the series he became more capable, while he still disobeyed orders from Optimus like returning to the base as Optimus sacrifices himself ,it was because smokescreen believes it is the right thing to do ,he even declined the Matrix being passed on to him even though at the beginning this is what he dreamed of. He was still the smug eager young bot but the way he thinks has changed drastically
Prime had very little character development anyways, and it undid what little it had, with Optimus downright forgetting that he wanted to kill Megatron after the Orion Pax episode.
Honestly, RID suffers from the same problems as Prime, the only difference is the artstyle and light-hearted tone.
@clogs4956 Nope. Cybertronians are capable of growing and changing. Ir was shown in many continuities. They aren't different from humans in that aspect. In G1, we have the Aerialbots who were disrespectful to other Autobots and dislike humans, matured and grew. They became serious in the duty of protecting humans. Even made friends with one human. Hot Rod who was reckless, became a responsible leader as Rodimus Prime.
Jeff Kline (the producer for Prime and RID) insisted that the staus quo be restored at the end of every episode.
Always saw the kid in him, and even when I got frustrated with him, I always felt bad for him, too. Maybe it's because I was a lonely kid who sometimes acted out for attention, but him begging others not to leave him endeared me to him

Another factor of Sideswipes hidden clingy side is that he usually fights with Strongarm for pretty much anything and seems like he dislikes her, but in the episode he gets split in two, his softer side expresses a few times via dialogue and actions that he actually likes her a lot and doesn't like when they fight one another. He wants to be get along and get to know Strongarm but his delinquent side is restricting any progress.
I got mad at the treatment for being clingy. They’re his friends, they should notice. Kids will see traumatic responses brushed off until they admit their vulnerability.
It’s like *an episode of struggles* “I’m scared of being left behind!” “We won’t leave you behind!” *end* when saying something clingy IS admitting vulnerability to sideswipe. They could just talk to him! Like, “Hey. Sticking together is what teams do, it’s a given. Why do you feel more nervous?” BAM! EASY! It would even teach kids to ask how others are doing!
RiD Sideswipe is really underrated, would you call a human stupid if they were always left and never had a true family, plus he was always abandoned. This is one of the times when RiD hits really hard

the writers try to capture what made Prime special. in some ways it didn't work, but in some ways it did.
It’s kinda sad how much potential this show had, but quantity was put over quality.
You know, in that in the episode where Bee’s team was captured and had nightmares, I wished that Sideswipe’s nightmare was about his abandonment issues rather than his claustrophobia

Though to be fair, they probably just didn't want to make the show 'too dark' for their target audience.

The more I learned of sideswipe’s backstory was told, the more I felt sorry for him.
The problem was, they never developed him or any of the characters in a major permanent way. I would’ve loved an episode where his teammates have to go inside his brain module to try to help him recover from something, but discover his past & the reasons he’s both very clingy & quick to think he’s replaceable.
Also, Sideswipe’s behavior reminds me of Silver or Gladion from Pokémon.
I wish some talented animator could make such an episode for the fans...

It's little things like these that really makes you think that RiD 2015 could've been so much better. I love Sideswipe and I really wish the RiD could've explored these themes rather than to always restart the status quo and this is coming from someone who enjoyed RiD low-key.

Tbh I never hated Sideswipe, sure he was a punk but I like that dynamic of him and him growing up, he and Strongarm gave me underdog vibes. And you elaborating the backstory of this young bot really helps. Also, while people might ship Sideswipe with Windblade, I'm a Strongarm x Sideswipe fan, I'm into the whole magnetic romantic thing, Opposites attract.

Honestly, I kinda think there was something going on between Sideswipe and Strongarm. They got a lot of Han-and-Leia level moments and dynamics in the show.
Man, really feel bad for him. As the Sideswipe I'm the most familiar with, it's nice to know more about him
This is why the Aligned Continuity needs to continue. It’s creates interesting backstories but doesn’t really touch more into it.
We really need a good TF show that delves deep into the characters' backstories, personalities, worldbuilding and lore, and also make some good character development and redemption for those who were bad guys but want to/get encouraged to do better.
Like, battle scenes are cool and all, but they don't have to take up the majority of the shows, there's gotta be room for a good story and well-written characters, and an interesting world they live in.
This is, of course, hard to do with cartoons because of run time and sometimes a limit on how many episodes can be released, idk, for some reason Animated's season 4 was cancelled even though everyone wanted to see it.
It's easier to delve deep into everything when it comes to comics, coz there ain't a limit to how many issues a continuity/series has to have, and though there may be a limit on pages, it can always say "To Be Continued" and then take as much time as it needs to be finished, polished and enjoyable to the readers.
At least, that's my interpretation of it all.

I do have a headcannon version of the most recent TF show that connects it to the Aligned continuity. Mostly because of three things:
1. Quintus Prime & the Emberstone
2. Megatron's redemption
3. Starscream
You think Sunstreak would adopt him? After all the old Sideswripe could of been killed during the war and sunny may have been trapped within his grief waiting for a brother who will never come back and then after RID Sideswipe is taken back to Cybertron and is paired up with Sunstreak. they could help each other with their traumas of loss one who lost a family member and one who never really had someone to make him feel that he had a real home and someone to love him. I also think he would have Bob as an emotional support insecticon because of his PTSD plus he wold help Sideswripe's anxiety so he doesn't feel alone when Sunstreak goes to work or comes back from school.
Boy I come up with great plots.
Obviously Cloudracer would adopt him. He has the same robot mode but turns into a jet. 🌚😈🌚

Honestly, despite all the fights between Sideswipe and Strongarm being annoying and they don't seem to be learning better throughout the show, I actually also like the detailed insecurities of Sideswipe with abandonment throughout the show, really makes him feel like an actual character and not just some walking joke for cheap laughs or anything.
Especially in "Exiles" I felt his fear when he got left behind in the battlefield, I would absolutely have freaked out if that was me and done the same thing as him, running around in panic and just hiding and crying for help, hoping to be heard.
I don't have any traumas like he has, but still having anxiety to some degree, I can relate well to that side of him.
Also I think it's fine to call young Cybertronians teenagers, at least if the bots saying it are familiar with the Earth term, like Bumblebee is.
Other than that, I think Cybertronians do sometimes refer to young bots as kids, even before going to/learning about Earth?
"Kid" could be a universal term just referring to young minds and not necessarily just the physical youth, whereas "teenager" is more of an Earth term for the transition between childhood and adulthood.
Sometimes even adults can be called "kid" by other, older adults, which often is an insult, whether intentional or unintentional.
I wonder if any new bots from before the war started - like mid caste and especially high caste (not low caste coz those were slaves) - were adopted by older bots to learn how the world worked? Or were new bots perhaps just thrown into work immediately, including high caste work like military, science, art, school and stuff without anyone to guide them through?
Coz I imagine bots with mental disorders like autism, ADHD, anxiety or such, even if "born" into the high caste like Starscream (who I definitely think has something like that, if not all three), would have trouble settling in and doing well without a mentor to guide them.

Im so frustrated that the show flopped the way it did, because it’s characters have a lot of potential, but they don’t do anything with it.
Like, I like the family dynamic they have going on but the bickering and fighting is literally never resolved. Nobody ever learns anything for longer than an episode.
He could've had a backstory with sunstreaker and maybe thats the reason why he's disrespectful to optimus because sunstreaker died in the war and optimus couldn't save him

Personally, Sideswipe has always been a favorite of mine. I'd be surprised if he was a different character is RID 15 because that's the first version of Sideswipe I got introduced to
YES! thank you. i've always found RiD15 Sidewipe to actually be really interesting, and a lot of people just don't seem to see it (even saw someone say he "can go choke", like :/ ? way to misunderstand him). the way they write his character with his abandonment issues and other characteristics is subtle and i feel he is one of the few competently written characters in RiD15.

Yeah, I can agree with the video about this version of Sideswipe. I also have to do a lot of research over the past months about RiD2015 since I was bored and I need information to gain. Overall, Sideswipe is very underrated if you understand where he's coming from and his words hints out a lot of information. Even when he jokes about it, not everyone gets it because they don't know what he faced in his youth. I always have to see what Vector Prime has on Tumblr because RiD2015 is has a lot of plot holes and you can learn what plot holes he filled up. Sideswipe is a great character overall imo, I sometimes just wished that Sunstreaker and Bob existed.
Vector Prime was never on Tumblr, he was on Facebook. 😱
Also most people have iusses with rid2015 character writing, humor, worship of status quo, etc. and not the actual plots of most episodes, so I'm not sure how some unofficial Tumblr ask Vector Prime could save rid2015 in that way.
The show could have been better then it was if it was more willing to explore these plot lines.
Tbh, if it explored this plot line, then I would've actually tolerated the show.

When episode 62 came out, I kept replaying Sideswipe's breakdown so many times. I found it very intriguing and important that they covered something like this, although a bit sad they didn't expand on it in the next episode, but at the same time, I think they wrapped it up nicely. Sideswipe was the only factor why I kept watching this show. I like your comparison to IDW2, and I think your theory is really well put together. 💕
As a child of abandonment myself, i should empathize with Sodeswipe...but all I can concentrate on is how much of a whining annoyance he is. Christ, no wonder people left me back then.

Sideswpies story is emotional and it kinda reminded it of myself when I was way younger, when ever my family would get in the car without me it made me feel they would leave me. Then I became a loner later in my life. Acting quiet and cool but now I'm way different. Now I'm more cautious but still quiet and shy. But still having trust issues. This story is emotional but I still really like sideswipe. He might as well be one of my favs.

my theory know is that Sideswipe name is actually Fastlane and he just later changed its name to onnor the hero Sideswipe or he could ones meat real Sideswip and got inspired by him or something like that

The biggest reason I always disliked Sideswipe in this show is exactly this.
Sideswipe in the comics as a kid was a badass, reliable, always ready for a fight and to support his fellow autobots. Even IDW Sideswipe was coolheaded and strong, but this isn't him. It's some other bot with his name, marketed as Sideswipe. But unlike many characters in shows and such that don't feel like the original, this Sideswipe feels especially wrong. I feel the same for the black and green Grimlock (especially since in comics, Grimlock had a vehicle mode before a dinomode, it's stupid he just CAN'T get a new one and has to ride on the back of a trailer. His stupidity also feels forced but that I can look past to some extent)
Not only that but his basic design was also a turn off for me. He was essentially the only design for this show I genuinely disliked. The hot red color, the red symbol on his chest that's almost unnoticeable with his base color, his face (everyone's faces look weird in this show, same for Prime to me but somehow Prime's artstyle made it less noticable), and his Hair?? Why did he have hair? Nobody else in this show or Prime had a head sculpt like that, just him. I hated it. I loved the level of humanity and such that Prime gave the cybertronian characters, and the lore that seperated humans and cybertronians proper but still had similarities to relate to them. Like, sure, there's such thing as a "young" bot, but the most we see is early Bumblebee's stubbornness and Smokescreen's recklessness and disregard of serious aspects like loss and such since he has only just then joined the war versus everyone else who've been fighting for years. But Sideswipe in this show was always *too human* to me, too young, y'know?
I genuinely hate how Sideswipe is more relatable as a kid stand-in than the actual human child in the show, especially since he's supposed to be a dilenquant teenager.
I don't hate RID, but there are so many parts that just feel too odd to enjoy for me.
Ehh...yeah. I agree. I realize it's geared more towards small kids, but still. That's why I liked TFP better. Both kids and adults can enjoy it.

I never thought I would feel sorry for this dude
since the heavy casualties on Cybertron, i wouldn’t be surprised if the OG Sideswipe died and was put in a new body with a resurrected spark. so instead of being a hardened vet, he’s like a kid again, and has a whole legacy to live up to with the survivors of the war all expecting him to be great and passing him on when he fails to do what they want. so we have a rogue childlike Sideswipe, overshadowed by his original counterpart, abandoned by any and all mentors simply because he isn’t the pilot of The Ark anymore.
This was actually super cool and unique. It made me realize how much I can relate to him aside from delinquent qualities. It's all so sad how Sideswipe suffers from all this. My opinion of him being somewhat annoying just completely changed
(Off topic though, you should do an analysis of RID Drift like this. I'd like to see what you have to say. His backstory with shadowraker and his students are kinda cool. Just an idea
I wonder what younger Sideswipe's reaction be to meeting older Sideswipe(The Sideswipe who piloted the Ark).
Still sucks that rid got the worst treatment of basically insulting kid's intelligence and basically made a show that never has a lasting consequences instead of the last episode

Great video, I actually kind of made a mistake on some of my fanfics because when I wrote them I didn't know this wasn't the same Sideswipe and had Sunstriker show up in some of them, And made Knock Out their cousin for story reasons, Some of my stories get weird. XD

I don't know if its just me or does this make it more perfect to add Smokescreen? As Smokescreen was a cocky bot himself and acted as if he was better than everyone else, he can relate to Swideswipe and teach him to be better. As Smokescreen had grown as a bot in Team Prime. I feel this would've given his character more development by guiding Sideswipe into making him into a better bot and Smokescreen would be a role model to him. Though if they did, I just hoped they would keep a similar or mostly same personality as he had in TFP and not make the character completely out of character.

Sideswipe was just look like a Teenager Rookie. Before he had an adult voice with Travis Willingham after Darren Criss voice as a Teenager
The last scene totally made the character of Sideswipe. He and Strongarm are totally siblings, always teasing here and there but with deep affection for each other.

She's definitely more older than 1000 years tbh, she said primus send her to earth 1000 years ago she never said she was born that year and primus wouldn't send just anybody so windblade had to be over a couple thousand years older than that maybe as old as Arcee,or bulkhead, or starscream

You know when you get lost at the mall that one time and you have past trauma of that, yeah that’s kind of like part of sideswipes personality
I have seen fan theories where this Sideswipe is K.O.'s kid, or at least had Con parents, and moving around, and eventually getting separated, or left behind was just an accident, and/or part of staying ahead of the Bots. Or as another of EK video's suggest, he may have been forcibly separated and stuck in a type of foster care system, but no one wanted a Con kid, so they constantly were looking for excuses to toss him to the next home, and eventually, like too many in our version of Foster Care, he just stopped going to the next home and began running the streets. Might explain why he's not to serious around Cons.
Sideswipe, a name commonly associated with a bot with a twin, was supposed to be called Fastlane, a name also associated with a bot with a twin.

Well, if there's no Sunstreaker here, I doubt there'd be a Cloudraker if they kept his old name.
Here's a theory what if Arcee was one of sideswipe's caretakers and one day she found out that zombie Arachnid was on one of the moons and died and since she never returned sideswipe thinks she just abandoned him. (we know most of the other prime autobots survive until this show but we don't know anything about arcee's fate)

And in season 1 episode 12 drift was able to tell that sideswipe was young as he called him a “ juvenile delinquent” meaning sides was still young. And not a fully grown Autobot but still a young sparkling. So you are probably correct.
Wished they focused more on stuff like this. Instead of dissing on Optimus or having Bee be a rude bot. Would be nice to see Bee try and understand Sideswipe and comfort and try to be a good role model for him.
sometimes i feel sorry for Wheeljack in armada, for being abandoned by his friend Hotshot but after i saw this, maybe Sideswipe fear is being abandoned bc he knew wheeljack story.

Just a kid looking for a home
Like I always said, this show had it's moments. But this one
this one hit one hit real close to the spark chamber. And it's one of the main reasons why I'm so defensive about this show honestly.
Ironically this show started in 2015 and I discovered and came to terms with a lot about myself and who I am and who I want to be in my awkward mid teens phase, but it wasn't until two years later where I rewatched and actually finished Prime and Rescue Bots that I was watching Robots in disguise for the first time and over the episodes with this character did I realized something I had happen to me one night that would change me forever. The reason why I was so interested in where this show was going even for al it's flaws particularly handling certain characters.
I was abandoned once.
Once . . .
I still have that crushing feeling in my chest every time I think about it. As if I'm having my very voice ripped right out of me through some giant razor sharp fist reaching in through my mouth and violently yanking my will out up through my throat over and over and over that just never seems to end as I watch my inside get pulled apart as I'm helpless and can do nothing but watch in pain and terror while at the same time someone's piercing glowing gaze just looks at me in the eyes straight through to me knowing exactly all the fear and helplessness I feel. Like some violent animal is chasing me down, hunting me, until it doesn't even decide to finish me and it just leaves me there as it looks over me looking at me as I'm not even worth it or anything else.
And I still have that one same exact nightmare even now of being hunted by a pack of shadowy ethereal wolves howling and snarling in pain and fear and lashing out at me due to no fault of their own and only doing so out of instinct. Only to surround me after I've fallen face first into the snow of an abandoned city in ruins only for them to take pity on me and all I see reflected in their eyes is their pain and a scared little puppy staring back at me shivering in the cold and crying until I just let out the tiniest sad little howl and let them take me into their cold yet welcoming embrace and just carry me off into the night and feel some kinda final sense of relief that at least I'm no longer alone.
I still don't like to talk about it, even though I've mentioned it in comments sections of videos on fictional media like this one. And I still won't let it go for the one who did this especially since he's my own parent. And I don't think I honestly ever will.

That scene in the scrapyard under fire, that really is how it felt like. It feels like a warzone. Everythings happening all at once zooming past you, barely grazing you with debris flying everywhere. Only swap those missiles and laser blasts with blinding harsh white LED headlights of passing cars and trucks careening at you at over 30 miles per hour and you have no weapons or anything to shield yourself with in the slightest bit, you only have the cold lashing at your back and everything moving around you and passing you at speeds that really do make your head spin.
I think it was at that point, not even when that happened but two years later in 2017 when I finally came out to my mom and had just watched that Episode earlier that week during summer break that I realized just how lonely and starved for not even just attention but sheer genuine affection and physical and emotional contact and validation from others who actually cared about me and accepted me and wanted me and needed me for my faults and flaws and all and would never have me without them.
That feeling of abandonment, of always running away and not having somewhere you belong, wether it's a physical place or not, just as long as your with someone who cares and accepts you and guidance you and supports you who helps you become stronger, that feeling is real. And I just really wished I had seen this show before as it was happening when I really needed it most. But when I saw shows like this later on, at least I knew it wasn't just me. At least I know I wasn't crazy. The only difference is that I don't have any of that kind of even fake confidence or bravado at all and instead am just quite.
I think that's why I'm so defensive about this show as I still am now, especially with your coverage in it in particular. As you saw in a previous comment I made, I've grown to see and agree a lot more with what this show was and how it was handled flaws and all. But don't get me wrong, we will never see eye to eye. And I am at peace with that. I only wish that more people especially from our generation came to this realization and we're also able to have this revelation that we actually did go through a lot that no one should ever have to go through. And we are all still gravely at risk of being trapped in that feeling of abandonment and lack of any true leadership and guidance again with how much further the United States is regressing and falling into authoritarianism and fascism and tyranny the likes of which are very scarily similar to that of a Pre-war Age of Rust of our own. And it's all cyto a head now. The question even is if any of us will even be around to face it's ugly face and defeat it when our own moral now in this calm before the storm is already so dire.
Seriously, you don't know how many times I wish I could have one bit cockiness that characters like this have. Because at least even then it would be something and could even potentially grow some real confidence and courage and pride.
But I honestly don't even have that. Except for these videos on the Internet I find like this where I can finally share these thoughts with someone. Even if the way we go about seeing and doing things couldn't possibly be any more different. It's good to know that this feeling is universal and something we can openly discuss. As opposed to me right now where . . .
Yeah, we'll see. I never really had the best role models.
But I guess that's not hard when you really don't have any. I now know that if I'm going to be looked at and viewed by others as the bad guy or some monster then I might as well look good doing it.
But if there's no one to even share it with. . .
All I know is that I don't know where the road will take me, but I can't make it anywhere alone. I need a ride. I need a driver. I need that missing component who will never leave me without them. And maybe then, I'll actually get somewhere in life. Anywhere. As long as it's somewhere I belong with someone I can be with no matter where this road takes me. Maybe then I'll actually start looking at it as a road and not just that road that one night where I'm just stranded like a helpless animal in the pitch black cold as no one ever stops to help me. And maybe if I keep telling myself this, I'll actually believe it too. I guess I'll see where this road takes me.
