Optimus states when he spoke about learning the concept of family, that it was a human concept. It's highly likely that Optimus was once just as much of a stern traditionalist military leader as Ultra Magnus was when he was introduced. In this way, it gives his growth another layer of depth. Well think of it this way. is it easier to attach a new organic hand to a human, or a prosthetic? the answer is Prosthetic. Sure, if Ratchet had the time, and proper equipment, then yeah. He could have done that. But the reality is that with the constant missions, Ratchet didn't have the time or materials to perform a complicated perseiger.
I gained more appreciation for the aligned incarnation of Ultra Magnus after watching TFA. It makes me wish we got to see more character development on his side towards this direction.
Yeah. Ultra Magnus in Animated came off as kinda the worst. Like he wouldn't even give humans the time of day and didn't seem to care for them at all. I love here how they made it so that Ultra Magnus shows his care for others by being strict. He's the oldest brother/son making sure the rest of his family is always safe whether they like him for it or not.
What you said about Wheeljack actually made me think: more often than not, modern media depicts any kind of rebellion as positive. I'm not saying that fighting for what you are or what you believe in is wrong, I'm saying that you should develop crytical thinking and pick which rules you should rebel against and which rules might have reasons to be there in the first place. You rightfully pointed out your firefighter BG, and I think it really fits! Rescue situations and battlefield situations are extremely similar in a way: both are team efforts in which communication, cohordination and a clear chain of command are fundamental to get to the desired end goal. Again, I'm not saying that indipendent thinking is bad, but discarding orders by default is just bad.
it feels like often its forgotten this bot has lead a war (hell that all of them are fighting a devastating war), a death is on him, a loss is on him, he has one of the most emotionally devastating jobs ever many would never mentally survive having
TFP Magnus is and always will be one of my favorite characters! 💙💙💙 He’s stoic, brave, and has depth! I love how he goes from limiting his emotional attachment with a strict chain of command, to learning about the concept of family and truly loving his team 💖
I'm not a military man but I think soldiers would usually prefer their officers or leaders to be serious and fair like Ultra Magnus considering that they're the ones sending them in. I think people who run off like Wheeljack are usually frowned upon in a setting like that. Heck in a normal workplace, someone who is rude and openly disrespects their superiors usually doesn't last long unless they have some kind of connection.
I will admit, when I first saw Ultra Magnus as a kid, I didn't like him at first, but not because of the way he treated Wheeljack (I honestly didn't like Wheeljack much as a kid either), I didn't like him because, in my mind, he only saw Team Prime as soldiers and nothing else. Yes, they are fighting a war so they are still technically soldiers, but when he is first introduced, he hasn't worked with Team Prime all together before, and here he comes barging in, immediately taking over the team. But after seeing him relinquish command back to Optimus, and seeing him trying to change his ways, I realized he wasn't that bad of a guy at all, and I started liking him more, especially as I grew up.
That the thing Audreyyoung when we are kids we see someone has a bad guy or the immature one only to realize Now older and being in the supporting role in the family or being seen as the ideal part of the team that they are just people trying to be the voice of reason or trying to get others to see or understand things more clearly as you can't see things as a kid forever
They honestly couldn't have picked a more perfect voice actor for Ultra Magnus, and yet he definitely feels wasted. Getting his ass handed by Megatron, Predaking, being absent for most of the finale episode and then being too wounded after two lesser Predacons claw at him.
@@zemox2534 I feel they did the same with Smookescreen as being a potential replacement leader- however it was understandable that the writers did not wan to repeat the G1 movie again- until Beast Hunters. Also the fanmade animation for Tf prime is adding Hotrod who we know has been a leader before as Rodimus Prime. The fact that Bumblebee, Smookescreen, Hotrod and Ultra Magnus been solved aside for Optimus is a constant annoyance
I think youre right,as a kid i never really liked ultra Magnus as a character, but i loved the design seeing the show right now i think that he is a good character now
In truth ultra magnus was strict, brave, strong, fearless, and confident. He cares for his soldiers and does change in the end. but in truth he is a goat character. Showing no fear when he fights megatron.
Respect for Ultra Magnus, a true autobot commander and without question, one of the best and strongest leaders in the autobots ranks: Always caring about the innocents and his soilders/friends/teammates and will put a fight to the end againts the strongest decepticons and predacons; to me, he is a hero and a true warrior/soldier.
I loved Magnus in TFP - every time I rewatch I get happy when he comes in. I always felt bad in the episode where Optimus comes back and is so well loved and Magnus is left standing alone - wondering if his way of commanding is the right way. He was a just bot and like Wheeljack said, fought like a Wrecker.
I think Ultra Magnus has this sort of strict parental aspect to him where he cares for you but he also thinks that if your going to do something your going to do it right. Like the said in the video he doesn't want the praise but if you choose to praise him your going to do it right.
I love Magnus in this show. He’s a powerful Autobot commander. Magnus simply enforces the rules strictly until he realizes it’s better to try and work with the personalities of team prime instead of against them. Not to mention they seem to relax more across the 3rd season, being far more friendly to the team by the end of the series. I can’t help but respect a commander that can work with his team, stay cool under pressure, and take on heavy hitters like Shockwave or even Megatron.
he reminded me of this one strict teacher I had for history in high school. she didn't smile much, was very precise and to the point with her teaching and criticism and if you screwed up? you got told off. while she did have her moments of softening up, she wasn't the one teacher we were fond of at the time. truth be told though? she was the only reason why I managed to get through physics, a subject relatively new and terrifying to me with decent grades. and I appreciate that now. she did need to loosen up though. just a bit.
I loved Ultra Magnus when I first watched tfp, he was one of my favourite characters! I had no idea anyone disliked him. I thought he was really cool and I felt for him when he struggled to adjust to the team prime dynamic.
I work with difficult dogs, and honestly, the exact same principles apply. If you're too soft and nice, you won't have the respect you need to get a dog to work with you. But when you're firm and strict, you're also consistent and fair. It's that consistency that helps dogs know exactly what to do. It's not being mean to them. It's just for their own good.
I like how you added your own personal experiences to justify and show why Ultra Magnus acts like he does, really seems like you had an UM on your own in the academy
Gotta love these videos, they really bring out how amazing prime was and mentions even the smallest details, such as ultra magnus patting bulkhead on the back.
i always respected Ultra Magnus and hated him being nerfed in the battle against Megatron when i know he could have won without plot convenience, and was low key sad when was standing alone after everybody crowed Optimus but he looked cool af at the same time not mention the cool weapons he brought on the ship were great. This man was a pretty cool and honorable warrior i wish we got to meet earlier.
I ain't gonna lie when I saw Wheeljack acting so reckless and Ultra Magnus calls him out I actually agreed with him. I get he's a wrecker and is a lone wolf, but if the young hotshot rookie like Smokescreen knows better not to bring Jack, a person who proved himself the most out of all of the humans, onto a possible battlefield then a veteran like Wheeljack should know better too. He nearly killed Miko, brought her on a mission knowing cons were probably there, and nearly got Ultra Magnus and Bulkhead killed. And yet what makes it worse is that Bulkhead kept defending him from Magnus. Like Bulkhead in the past 2 seasons would've been more like Arcee when she found out Smokescreen brought Jack on a possibel dangerous area, yet he doesn't call him out. This not only seems like character assassination on both wreckers, but also makes me sympathize with Ultra Magnus even more. Especially since this is a military unit and acting on your own can get you and your team killed.
@@arcticangel1628 I haven't read the books, but from what the show tells me Wheeljack bailed on the wreckers a little after Ultra Magnus took charge. I don't know how he treated the other wreckers, but what we've seen with Team Prime Ultra Magnus is unnecessary cruel or even results to insults. He actually only wants to do what is necessary and nothing that would compromise the safety of his teammates. Wheeljack chose to leave. Nobody forced him out. Like the video says Wheeljack's loner style nearly got him, Bulkhead, and other people killed on multiple occasions. And it's not that I entirely dislike him it's more as if I dislike how the show wrote him when it came with Ultra Magnus.
It didn’t matter to me that Ultra Magnus was more strict than Optimus, it was that he brought hope for the characters. He was strong, smart, loyal. Everything the Autobots needed in a leader. Also, his interactions with Optimus, his superior, are just adorable.
Ultra Magnus providing his ship and weapons were enough to win me over. In the words of Wheeljack, he was "speaking my language" lol As much as I disliked how he restricted Wheeljack and Miko, I did appreciate the new blood and personality, similar to how Smokescreen would sometimes get on my nerves but I was still happy to have him as an addition to the team, even as a kid Wheeljack and Ultra Magnus working together will forever be one of the coolest action moments and greatest character moments in all of Transformers media, and I will die on that hill lol
I think he’s an excellent contrast to Optimus. Where Optimus prided himself on being an Emotional leader, being more of a father figure than a military commander, Magnus is a more traditional military leader. They compliment each other very well.
To anyone who think thag Ultra Magnus doesn't have emotions will receives these hands with a wrath!!!🙌 Thank you for sharing this video, UM doesnt receive enough love in the series
You are so right with this, Wheeljack is fun to watch but yeah IRL I wouldnt want to be anywhere near Prime wheeljack for long, he makes the more scientist esque wheeljacks seem safe since atleast they have a backup prime or quick enough to reverse what they did. I did see Ultra Magnus as rigid at first but after a while I saw him as well the bot that had to be leader for centuries not knowing where his commander was or even if he was still alive, so the personality
Growing up my favorite characters were Arcee, Wheeljack, and Ultra Magnus so it’s good to see someone point out the redeeming qualities of his character!
Anytime I take time to watch Kumquat my day always gets a little more interesting, and a little more fun. This guy needs way more subscribers than he's got.
I love your "Character has emotions" videos. They show the less obvious sides of my favorite characters (Optimus is my favorite, and I've always loved his dynamic with Ultra Magnus since I was a kid), and makes me love them even more
This is exactly why TFP was miles better than RID, the characters had some development like Wheeljack started to respect Ultra Magnus more unlike where Sideswipe and Strongarm would never learn how to respect one and another
I love Ultra Magnus, he is considered one of my favorite characters in Transformers Prime, it's a shame that in the movie he doesn't get any screen time after he was out of commission during a skirmish
Ultra magnus and wheeljack vs. predaking is one of the best fights in the show. For both its choreography and character development. This was where Ultra fully earned Wheeljack's respect, and it makes sense that the way this happens would be a scenario both bots are very experienced and skilled in; a battle for survival.
The Commander is probably one of my favorites in the series, in my opinion he resembles Optimus a lot, both having capabilities of being leaders plus also looking similar to him (mostly to S1 Optimus).
Ever since I saw this video I can’t unsee everyone’s hate towards him. I mean everything thing you say is right! Sure he’s stiff but lady time he was with boys he was leading a sub division of special forces. Now he’s taking charge of a warrior, a scout, a newbie, 2 wreckers one with authority problems, and a bunch of humans which he does listen to.
Didn't ever see ultra magnus in prime cuz I didn't get far enough, but I'd seen him and assumed he was an optimus replacement for a new gen and never considered him to be anything but an optimus clone, but this vid probalby made him my new favorite transformer
Ultra Magnus is honestly the best part of why transformers is fun. Yes in Transformers Prime he’s more of military commander than what he was in G1. The fact that Michael ironside voiced him in season 3 of prime just made his presence as awesome as Sam fisher from the splinter cell games.
16:02 i love the tf animated references in this scene. the elite guard being a group in tfa and "cogs in a machine" being a part of primes speech in animated episode one!
I just realized that my relationship with Mom was just like Wheeljack and Ultra Magnus. Man, I've got to learn to take some orders, but I'd also would like a looser leash. Edit: I actually am pretty free, so the loose leash scrap wasn't necessary.
My first time seeing Magnus was in the TF WFC DS game as an unlockable character and when he appeared on the show i was hype. He reminded me of those army commanders who took no nonsense and he was like a more strict prime in my eyes
Its a personal pet peeve of mine when people say that stoic or reclusive characters have "no emotion." As someone who's incredibly introverted and struggles to express emotion, its very insulting. Not expressing much emotion _is_ a character trait. How can people praise Soundwave (who doesn't even speak), but criticize Ultra Magnus?
I really loved Ultra Magnus' characterization. It felt like a similar take to Animated, but far more human. Ultra Magnus wasn't infuriating because it was treated like a flaw and something he had to work on (and WANTED to work on; I love that he felt bad for making others uncomfortable with his need for strict nature). It's unfortunate that Prime ended so soon after Ultra Magnus joined the team. And it's even more unfortunate that Robots in Disguise didn't properly follow up and move forward with where Prime ended.

19:35 Ironic, Michael Ironside said that same thing in an X-Men movie where he and a bunch of other soldiers were about to die.
Both wheeljack and magnus are wrong. They are at extremes
it feels like often its forgotten this bot has lead a war (hell that all of them are fighting a devastating war), a death is on him, a loss is on him, he has one of the most emotionally devastating jobs ever many would never mentally survive having
TFP Magnus is and always will be one of my favorite characters! 💙💙💙 He’s stoic, brave, and has depth! I love how he goes from limiting his emotional attachment with a strict chain of command, to learning about the concept of family and truly loving his team 💖
People tend to dislike a character when they’re inconsiderate of the experiences the character had to go through that former their personality.
He’s like benson from regular show. You didn’t like him as a kid, but you can understand and relate to him as you grow older.
real transformers the movie vibes when ultra magnus is getting fixed.
"OPEN DAMN IT!"
"Prime, you said the Matrix would light our darkest hour."
Agreed he was a needed character for Wheeljack's development and others.
I have to agree with you on that one since Wheeljack and smokescreen where like Teenage Kids Ultra Magnus was this drill sergeant type character
They're not just soldiers, they're the soldiers who survived the apocalypse
The whole "everybody isn't screwed if the commander goes down" bit is actually spot on.
Movies: Weird lips
Animated: Weird chins
Prime: Weird eyebrows
😭😭😭
Yeah since times have changed since the Autobots have been on cybertron he has seen the the autobots are haven humans alliances to help
Yeah they wasted Magnus
@@zemox2534
I feel they did the same with Smookescreen as being a potential replacement leader- however it was understandable that the writers did not wan to repeat the G1 movie again- until Beast Hunters.
Also the fanmade animation for Tf prime is adding Hotrod who we know has been a leader before as Rodimus Prime. The fact that Bumblebee, Smookescreen, Hotrod and Ultra Magnus been solved aside for Optimus is a constant annoyance
TBF nobody was able to defeat Predaking in the entire series. Only Unicron did.
@@anjaneyasreetrout2444 I mean. Megatron outsmarted him, so there's that. He definitely got overpowered by Predaking, so 50/50
@@dj11o9erit was not smartness, it was cowardice he couldn't beat predaking alone without starscream
19:35 Ironic, Michael Ironside said that same thing in an X-Men movie where he and a bunch of other soldiers were about to die.
Ultra Magnus deserves more respect
I think Ultra Magnus has this sort of strict parental aspect to him where he cares for you but he also thinks that if your going to do something your going to do it right. Like the said in the video he doesn't want the praise but if you choose to praise him your going to do it right.
THEY! I CAN NEVER TYPE!
14:00 TRUE. If it weren't for Bulkhead and Wheeljack going "It's Wrecking Time"
UM had good rhythm vs Predaking.
They did Wreck something, Magnus' advantage and rhythm
I love Magnus in this show. He’s a powerful Autobot commander. Magnus simply enforces the rules strictly until he realizes it’s better to try and work with the personalities of team prime instead of against them. Not to mention they seem to relax more across the 3rd season, being far more friendly to the team by the end of the series. I can’t help but respect a commander that can work with his team, stay cool under pressure, and take on heavy hitters like Shockwave or even Megatron.
Ultra LITERALLY GOT his Hand obliterated by Predaking in pain so...yeah, that's when i knew that Generals like him have emotions too.
The casting in TFP was so on point, Michael Ironside (of Total Recall and Starship Troopers fame) fits Ultra Magnus perfectly!
Magnus was one of my favorite characters in the show! Awesome work with this vid!
Ello!
U talk alot on this channel interesting....
@@franciscojavierdelatorreba3554I think 90% of tf youtubers know and watch each others videos lmao
I swear, when Ultra Magnus had that hammer, he was just playing Monster Hunter. He seems like a good hammer main if he kept going.
he reminded me of this one strict teacher I had for history in high school. she didn't smile much, was very precise and to the point with her teaching and criticism and if you screwed up? you got told off. while she did have her moments of softening up, she wasn't the one teacher we were fond of at the time. truth be told though? she was the only reason why I managed to get through physics, a subject relatively new and terrifying to me with decent grades. and I appreciate that now.
she did need to loosen up though. just a bit.
I loved Ultra Magnus when I first watched tfp, he was one of my favourite characters! I had no idea anyone disliked him. I thought he was really cool and I felt for him when he struggled to adjust to the team prime dynamic.
You pretty much described my experience with the character. He's not a good guy turns out to be bad kinda guy. Just a lovable tough strict old man.
I see Ultra Magnus is like scorched soldier that been through a lot, literally lives by the army and doesn't need someones adoration
He deserves better.
You’ve just made me love Ultra Magnus!
19:35 Ironic, Michael Ironside said that same thing in an X-Men movie where he and a bunch of other soldiers were about to die.
i always respected Ultra Magnus and hated him being nerfed in the battle against Megatron when i know he could have won without plot convenience, and was low key sad when was standing alone after everybody crowed Optimus but he looked cool af at the same time not mention the cool weapons he brought on the ship were great. This man was a pretty cool and honorable warrior i wish we got to meet earlier.
He was definitely powerful but he’s not beating megatron maybe with the forge of solus prime he would’ve won but without he loses
Ultra Magnus is one of my fave characters. I think Michael Ironside did a good job as him.
People tend to dislike a character when they’re inconsiderate of the experiences the character had to go through that former their personality.
“What’s a kilt?”
*leans in* “Agent Fowler May sometimes be obleek, I find it simply best to nod and Roll out.”
0:00-0:05 nah that goes to tailgate he was only on screen for like 2 seconds
Could he even be counted when all we saw of him was a shadow at most lmao?
@@electricfeverx976 what about Seaspray?
@Electric Fever X episode 12 predatory around 10 :55 you see more than a shadow you see his whole body
@@ironhorsehistorian9871
Nope we never saw Seaspray, Roadbuster or Firestar
I personally love ultra magnus. The little drama with wheeljack served to develop both characters beyond their first introduction.
7:54 So he basically got the Vegeta treatment
He’s very polite too, he never forgets to say please and thank you
Ultra Magnus providing his ship and weapons were enough to win me over. In the words of Wheeljack, he was "speaking my language" lol
As much as I disliked how he restricted Wheeljack and Miko, I did appreciate the new blood and personality, similar to how Smokescreen would sometimes get on my nerves but I was still happy to have him as an addition to the team, even as a kid
Wheeljack and Ultra Magnus working together will forever be one of the coolest action moments and greatest character moments in all of Transformers media, and I will die on that hill lol
I think he’s an excellent contrast to Optimus. Where Optimus prided himself on being an Emotional leader, being more of a father figure than a military commander, Magnus is a more traditional military leader. They compliment each other very well.
He was one of my favourite, thats for damn sure
I still can't believe they just left Ultra Magnus unconscious by the end of the movie.
He did regain consciousness in RID 2015 comics and came back with arcee and bulkhead. Strongarm was fan girling her
@@blueraccoon1088 in which epispde
Damn my respect for ultra magnus fucking went threw the roof
He is kind and caring, but doesn't know how to be not after what he had endured from his time in warfare
Wheeljack will always be my favorite Autobot Character in Transformers. I loved his clashes with Ultra Magnus!
It was so funny how much they hyped him as Optimus replacement only to be knocked out from Megatron with one punch.
I loved Magnus. 10/10 character, perfect contract to the wreckers, and exactly what Team Prime needed.
Them shoulder pads though
To anyone who think thag Ultra Magnus doesn't have emotions will receives these hands with a wrath!!!🙌
Thank you for sharing this video, UM doesnt receive enough love in the series
You are so right with this, Wheeljack is fun to watch but yeah IRL I wouldnt want to be anywhere near Prime wheeljack for long, he makes the more scientist esque wheeljacks seem safe since atleast they have a backup prime or quick enough to reverse what they did. I did see Ultra Magnus as rigid at first but after a while I saw him as well the bot that had to be leader for centuries not knowing where his commander was or even if he was still alive, so the personality
damm this is a nice episode, love how you explain Ultra Magnus's character in a cool way.
They show the less obvious sides of my favorite characters (Optimus is my favorite, and I've always loved his dynamic with Ultra Magnus since I was a kid), and makes me love them even more
I never saw Ultra Magnus in a negative light, but when you said what you said I could understand why children would see him that way.
Ultra Magnus was always one of my favourites growing up.
This is exactly why TFP was miles better than RID, the characters had some development like Wheeljack started to respect Ultra Magnus more unlike where Sideswipe and Strongarm would never learn how to respect one and another
True, anytime anybody got character development in RID it got reset next episode.
I never disliked Prime Ultramagnus. Even before the war he was in the military - in the Elite Guard, so no wonder he's so strict and "by the book".
Ultra Magnus video, you love to see it
I could be wrong but I think as Magnus slowly warms up to the others he starts using more and more contractions in his speech.
TFP is a gem ❤️🥺 couldn't forget the entire series
Late but always hoped emperor kumquat would make a video about underrated Magnus. Glad it became a reality fr
Ultra Magnus is honestly the best part of why transformers is fun. Yes in Transformers Prime he’s more of military commander than what he was in G1. The fact that Michael ironside voiced him in season 3 of prime just made his presence as awesome as Sam fisher from the splinter cell games.
Dude, Ultra Magnus was the coolest character in the chow when I was a kid 😂
They really stay true to his g1 style and character but just add a little twist.
I've always liked how Ultra Magnus is in TFP. I love Ultra Magnus in any TF verse!
Ultra Magness is an amazing character he also helps Rodimus as 2n in command.Ever the reliable second in command
Looking back on Prime, Magnus, Smokescreen and Ratchet are definitely stand outs as they are able to grow and develop the most out of the Autobot cast
he is my favorite character in TFP (besides Smokescreen). both are great additional characters that made the story even better.
11:10 YOOO EMPEROR is gonna be firefighter! Best of luck on your journey!
19:35 Ironic, Michael Ironside said that same thing in an X-Men movie where he and a bunch of other soldiers were about to die.
12 yr old me: I hate Ultra Magnus.
Me now: oh, I am an ultra Magnus
So THIS Ultra Magnus CAN deal with that.
Ultra Magnus is my favorite character in all of Transformers media, just by (mainly G1) design alone
I loved UM in TFP he’s a soldier and a badass military leader.
