In this video we explore an important Australian Cold War event that is often overlooked in Australian history: the testing of atomic weapons in Australia in the 1950s. What does this event reveal about the Australia in which it occurred? And how can we, with today’s values, develop an empathetic understanding of the values and attitudes of Australian society during the Cold War? You can also investigate the effects of nuclear testing on Aboriginal people from that area and ongoing debates about responsibility and compensation since that time.

An interactive entitled, Cold War timeline, is also available for this case study.

Honestly we are not sure these days. I'd suggesting giving the Woomera Heritage and Visitor Information Centre a call. +61 8 8673 7042. They'll be able to help you out. All the best and thanks for watching.

There is no mystery. My father was an RAF officer there. I know what went on.
