The End of the World was exactly the right next move to make. Dark, dingey and somewhat ordinary London right through to the bright spectacle of an outer space space station. I loved Rose to bits but this felt so much more like Doctor Who, there’s a real multi-creature Peladon energy to all on display. Also it shows what the ‘new digital effects’ are all about, those spider bots are still wonderful today. Of course some of the ‘monsters’ no longer cut the mustard but at the time I bought all that was given to me. It took a while for me to get critical about the new show, so from here on to The Long Game, I’m sold on it all. Gx 10/10 Gx
@@p-bal not so much it was a dud, more it looked a little tackier than the previous eps and plot wise, seemed a bit all over the place. I was certainly entertained in parts (still thrilled to bits Dr Who was back on the box), we get some lovey space station CGI but there was something just a bit too stock sci-fi about it. Didn’t feel quite as ‘original’ as what went before. I look forward to your takes on it. Gx
22:51 I wouldn't mind betting that RTD got some of his inspiration for Cassandra from Terry Gilliam's "Brazil", in which Mrs Lowry, played in deliciously over-the-top fashion by Katherine Helmond, is addicted to extreme plastic surgery. There's one particular scene where her plastic surgeon (Jim Broadbent) stretches the skin of her cheeks to grotesque extremes, before fastening the flesh with bulldog clips to the side of her head. Despite the fact that she now looks terrible, the vain Mrs Lowry clearly believes that she's more beautiful than ever.
The doctor's despatch of Cassandra in this episode is another way in which he reminds me of Macca in Seasons 25 and 26. “Do I have the right? Damn right I have the right." RTD's decision to ditch the timelords also reminds me of Andrew Cartmel and his complaint that they turned the show into a bit of a soap opera. The dark, distant stranger works so well for the character. Regarding “issues" - I wonder whether RTD's skills here stem from his experiences with children's drama and at the tail end of a golden period with producers like Paul Stone in the 80s and early 90s. Series like Moondial (beautiful!) cover a range of issues but they're always a natural outworking of the narrative and characters. The issues aren't prior to a good story, nor do they dominate or bully it in any way - they're just great little moments of reflection. Lovin' P-Bal's Mimi t-shirt. 👍
I think you can see a lot of Russell's Dark Season in his approach to Who and I guess his Who in Dark Season. With all the Disney cash, they can afford Mimi as The Rani now, right? 😂
@@p-bal Oh, my word that would be just incredible. She's just about the only woman on earth who could do it. “Mel? I don't know her." Agree 100% on Dark Season. I also like how you put used the principle of recursion to better effect in a RUclips comment than it was in Castrovalva.
You chaps always make me smile so much!! Loved this one, and how Jason sounded less Welsh when he tried to do a Welsh Impression! 😂😂. Never change, you splendid chaps!
I think i only watch these videos for Jason laugh now!!LOL
I'm enjoying these commentary videos from the Bananarama of the Whoniverse.
Always a giggle. X
Great video chaps loved the silence of the lamb at the end 😂
Impressive cosplay by James as ever, even if he does look a bit like the Alien poking its head out of John Hurt's chest.

I think The Long Game was always the one picked out as the dud, so I'm interested to have another look back at it in context.

@@barstang I did look it up in the Index File under Index File first though.
@@p-bal Bet it wasn't as exciting a read as the Index catalogue was. 👍
@@barstang I miss Index and their catalogue! The joys of that as a child!!!
