Honestly this is a better voice for Satan movie wise. People usually give him this booming voice but I don’t see it, to me he’s quiet and devious and evil so the whisper actually works better.
Yeah, me too. I always imagined Satan would probably talk in snake's tongue🐍 It's logical considering human nature , when the evil-minded of us 'man' manipulate and/or seduce people they usually do that through calmly talking with them in a soothing voice - which really sounds like hisses in your ears - and unfortunately, majority of the time works. *HE* pretty much is a seducer and a manipulator playing mind games to fuck us up in our love life, Faith in our religion, just basically being the Anti-Christ. The depiction of Lucifer in this film is more believable than that of other movies that goes over the top of how the Devil is presented to the audience. I agree with you 💯
I know a lot of people clown on the 'butter' part of the dialogue, but I absolutely love it. Butter is a fattening, rich food, that would be considered decadent/indulgent, on-theme for the Devil. He only offers excessities, enticing her with extravagance, not substance.
It has nothing to do with any of that. Butter was declared a sin worse than lying for the 15th and part of the 16th century. He's literally asking her if she'd like to turn away from the church.
Ok but it does sound goofy that the best he can do is throw in some butter and dresses and it worked. But it is supposed to be what accused witches said the devil promised. And both weren’t as easy to get at the time
Deals with the devil: 2019: "Do you want millions of dollars and fame, to be a rock star, live in a mansion, and have all the comforts in the world?" 1600: "You uhh.... want some butter?"
Fun fact, part of this scene was improvised. When filming the scene Charlie, the goat who played Black Philip, actually spoke and turned into a man. The director was so impressed he kept it in the movie.
I've read reviews where people read way too much into what Thomasin meant when she said: "I cannot write my name." That was NOT an expression of hesitation or having second thoughts; she is merely admitting she's unable to read or write, just like most people (especially women) in those days. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the correct one.
Well considering New England at the time had one of the highest literacy rates in the world it's not that far fetched to look into. It was illegal not to be literate past a certain age because everyone had to be able to read the Bible. Especially when you consider how thorough Eggers researches for a project. I would say it's deliberate for something, not sure what, could have a deeper meaning or be somewhere Eggers deviated from historical accuracy for the sake of the film
@@freddyM610 they definitely knew how to read because they ask the younger child to read the bible for them. But that doesn't mean they practiced their script/writing themselves. One of my favorite parts from this scene is Black Philip speaking in a whisper rather than the stereotypical demonic voice you hear in other horror movies. Not only is it so creepy, it also comes off as persuasive. I personally think Tomasin was in survival mode when she became a witch. She’s all alone in the world with no means of supporting herself, moving back to England or even the colony ( being the only survivor covered in her mom’s blood, she’d be executed on the spot) and is deliriously starving. Plus she was so repressed, she believes this would be her ticket to a good life.
What choice does she really have at this point ? She can't stay where she is, because there is no food. The settlement is five days away through the trackless forest and even if she found her way there, the authorities would probably agree with her family that she is a witch and hang her. Sign the book and get it over with.
true that, the self fulfilling prophecy that played out from when sam first went missing continued to slowly make her come to this point of hey im already being considered a witch by my own family, so whats the harm in becoming one now ya know.
Interesting little fact to go with this scene: the way Charles Manson recruited on of his first female followers was by standing her naked in front of a mirror and whispering to her that she was beautiful
I ran this past a girl recently.. she thought if you delivered it well, it be awesome & original...gotta add the deliciously though.. Nevermind this idiot fatearter.. lol.. probably boring and common AF, with no sense of humour.
This is the creepiest scene in the film, in my opinion! It’s so creepy and eerie how we can hear Satan but not see him, hiding in the darkness. So mysterious and dark
I think it's much creepier how what he offers isn't even that far out there. Her life is so utterly shitty that the prospect of a nice dress and maybe traveling around a bit is enough, good job Puritan values!
@ÒγÓ REGIMÈ I'm with you with most of these, but Thomasin's desires are hardly illusionary. They might be worldly and ultimately harmful to her immortal soul, but suppressing them is all her parents ever did and it wasn't the devil who did them in. And they didn't even practice what they preached to her, because ultimately what they preached was inhuman.
ÒγÓ REGIMÈ I don’t think this movie necessarily set the devil up as the antagonist. Much of the horror in this movie is based on the audience trying to see this from the point of view of a Puritan family. Puritans did not believe that you could get into Heaven by being a good person; God’s salvation might make you a good person, but being a good person did not guarantee salvation. When you consider the Puritan beliefs on sin, redemption, damnation, etc This “New England Folk Tale” essentially becomes a tale of a wicked family getting punished for their sins.
Eve's sin was to eat the fruit, Adams sin was standing idly by and just let it happen. It's a really interesting point of the story, they were together in that moment, knew what they shouldn't do and Eve listened to the serpent - servitude - and Adam didn't even object - laziness. Eve could have crushed the serpents head, Adam could have reminded the serpent who the ruler of the earth was. But no.
@Deep Soul Yes, in essence, the temptation was a Kingly and Queenly one, maybe the serpent wanted to see if they really believed that they were the Rulers of the Earth, made in the image of G-d.
This is how the devil should sound like and he does. It’s seductive and soothing. That’s why people ‘sin’. Other films which make him deep voiced and red are just far fetched. The more realistic it is the more creepy because you can never tell where evil really lies.
This is truer to the nature of sin than those blatantly scary depictions of Satan. Sin is tempting, which is why people would do it. I would pose that the stereotypical view of Satan and evil has been a detriment to general morality because people have greatly dissociated pleasure from sin.
Well, if you're Satan and you wants to make people sin, the first thing is not show up with a obviously evil form. Just manipulated them with nice words and having a form that not arise any suspicion.
Exact. If Satan exists, his personified figure is far from the one we see in the movies, he is more of a hidden shadow that deceives vulnerable people, he is no red demon with horns, he is persuasive and seductive, the embodiment of sins

It makes sense that the devil would be sexy and seductive. What kind of being would be able to convince almost any human to be sinful? A beautiful, charismatic man with a soothing voice or a creepy red half-goat-person with a voice like he has been chainsmoking since the beginning of creation?
I only saw this film for the first time yesterday. Disturbingly amazing. I absolutely love the detail of this scene. Watch at 1:35 where Black Phillip takes His first step. It's a hoof with His left leg then a human right leg with a spurred boot. Amazing. This is one of the finest scenes in horror history. No stupid jump scares, no stupid CGI. Pure unnervingly brilliance
That's exactly how the Devil was often described in witch trial transcripts from the period: as a Cavalier dressed in black, with one goat leg. Eggers definitely did his research!
He doesn't "have the leg of a goat", lol. The shot is a brilliant take on him shapeshifting from goat to human form. He takes the first step as Black Philip, the second as a human, and it's implied that by his third step towards Thomasin he has fully shifted into his bipedal human form, with two regular human legs.
The most terrifying monsters are the ones you only catch glimpses of or don't even see. Without being able to see what the monster looks like, your imagination runs riot and gives you one terrifying image after another, each one worse than the last, until you're paralyzed with fear.
Egger totally understand how to convey tone. If he would've showed us the goat literally talking, it would've not worked. If he sowed Satan (the dude walking), it would've not worked. This is how you do horror properly.
It's a little like the first scene in Black Swan where the Demon is dancing behind Natalie Portman and she's unsure whether to accept his presence or not.
That hand on the shoulder out of nowhere is so well timed and discreet. Makes it much creepier that it’s not a disfigured hand but something we recognize.
Man this could have gone SO WRONG SO EASILY. I was expecting something à la doctor dolittle to happen, with the he-goat moving its mouth ridiculously. But the choice to not show anything, to focus on Thomasin, was pure genius. Less is more. This is unspeakably chilling, it affects me so deeply in an almost primal way. This is why this movie is so good, this is horror done wisely and effectively
I can't imagine watching this in the cinema with no subtitles. I wouldn't understand a single conversation. But when I watched this with subtitles, it's one of the best horror movies in modern era
I like how they didn't make Satan some monstrous beast. They instead made him seem seductive and handsome. He looks like he's dressed in fine clothes as well. You can see his boot but it also looks like he's wearing a hat when he has his hand on her shoulder. You can also hear his jewellery and trinkets making sounds. That or it's just part of the score to convey an air of magic about him. Either way, great job.
It also adds another layer of authenticity when you see the spurred boot. They actually made a whole costume for him (Google it, it's amazing). He's dressed like an English nobleman at the time, a Cavalier, the sort of people who were the sworn enemies of the Puritans back in England.
I have never understood why, even in horror movies, the devil has always been made ugly. Wouldn't it make more sense if the devil is trying to seduce you and get your soul for him to be handsome and seductive?
@@Heroball299 until you sign your name and realize whatever abomination you just gave your only soul to was not only lying but will see to it that nothing but pain fear and anguish await you for as long as your soul burns after which you’ll be eternally damned and what you sought to have gained was worth less than a penny’s worth of happiness and being content lol this could all be fiction but why play with forces that are demonic hateful and an abomination to all that is life because you’re bored and it may not be true 😆 I feel where this is coming from the answer to your boredom is whatever you’re not tending to in your own life that would give fulfillment instead of a supernatural entity that seeks your ruin lol
What I love most about this that the Devil makes himself appear as unthreatening. He speaks softly. Gently. Does not raise his voice. He offers her indulgence, persuades her, but does not force her hand unless she wishes. And when he changes his form, he does not become a terrible beast. Rather, he merely becomes a man. A stranger, but without a threatening appearance or anything of the like. And when he does make her follow his will, he does so under the form of guidance. The devil is wicked, but he is not stupid. He is a temptor, a deceiver, a source of misguidance and ill decisions of your own making. He allows you to destroy yourself, and only then will he bring about his will upon you.
It's a great scene - given that previously all the call outs to god by her family were falling on deaf ears. It's all about giving an answer to those who are lost and the devil is the only one giving hope and actual pleasure, not with a shout but a whisper. It's so brilliant as a theme.
I have only seen this film once and now came back to watch this scene. I remembered the hand on her shoulder but I just now saw man´s face next to her.
Right? After Thomasin was treated so badly by her family and her mother almost killed her, her signing Satan's book and getting to be with the other witches does almost seem like a happy ending. I hope Thomasin got to see the world, eat butter and wear all the pretty frocks her heart desired. She's more than earned it ❤
In my opinion the whole movie builds to this scene, the subtle whispers of unmeasurable evil creep into your ears and strike your heart cold as ice, such a good portrayal of the devil! Outstanding movie!!!
This particular scene, as well as the entire film, was incredibly thought out and well acted. The line about "butter" is specifically significant but has gone widely unnoticed. I have an older friend, a lovely Italian woman, who lived through WWII in her town from the border of the former Yugoslavia. Food was beyond scarce, people were starving during that tragic period. Men and women were eating raw potatoes and polenta, a traditional dish made from boiled corn meal which is how she and her mother survived. I asked her, did you top the polenta with butter (which is paired well). Incredulously, she exclaimed, "Butter was for the rich, and even they couldn't find it"!
"wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" "yes" "touch your tongue to mine..." "wait wha?" "your tongue....touch it to mine..." "why?" "to make it all official..." "to, to make what official?" "you know...all of it....nevermind then we're off!"
Best part of the film. This film is especially resonant for my wife and I, having both grown up in a very orthodox religious community. That shit is so toxic. Join the witches and live deliciously.
Well I don't think the lesson is an endorsement of whatever the devil is selling, but I do think it displays the irony of insular ultraconservative religious communities. They think of themselves alone as God's chosen people, the most morally righteous, and yet religious institutions in many religions are plagued with the worst kinds of people. The catholic church is well known for its pedophiles. NYC's Hasidic community apparently also suffers a similar problem. Those with elder status take advantage of the fact that victimhood comes with deep shame, and thus few are willing to report abuse to the appropriate authorities much less the internal justice system which is run by the perpetrators.
@@atlas42185 The thing is, there's nothing wrong with what the devil is selling here: butter, a pretty dress, dancing naked in the forest. He's not telling her to kill people or do heroin. I think part of the message is indeed to liberate yourself from the bonds of religion.
What I loved about the movie is the Thomasin was the only one who was free from any sin. And the devil got the best one to turn, thus defeating god in this instant.
The way I see it, he's speaking telepathically. If he started talking in goat form (at night) an already distressed Thomasin would surely run away in panic. But using a calm whispering "mind voice" he makes his presence acknowledged subtley. immediately he "shifts" into his human form, something Thomasin can relate to, and stands right behind her, placing his hand on her shoulder. The physical contact is intended to soothe her, but also to keep her in place (I'm right behind you darling, you are not going anywhere). I believe Thomasin is aware of this. notice she says "I cannot write my name" instead of "Help me write my name" or a phrase akin. On an uncoscious level she may be having second thoughts about the bargain but..yeah, you already teased the goat..
I've read so many people saying they didn't like how Black Philip was legit, and would've preferred the whole thing was some sort of mental trauma. I so disagree. When he straight up answers her in that voice almost shat myself. Great scene 👌
The camera not taking it's eyes off her is perfect. It's watching a million thoughts go through her head; without giving her the cues or encouragements.
Girl: "So remember how you kind of killed of all my family and made me look like a witch? I want to sell my soul, what could I get for it?" Devil: "Best I can do is butter..."
Lovecraft did something very similar to what is depicted here in his story "The Dreams in The Witch House". Don't know if this was an intentional reference in the film, or if this was taken from the mythology and lore behind Witchcraft. Either way, the implications are still nevertheless disturbing
Much was tsaken from the actual recorded testimony of the witch trials..both the dialogue and referenced events. Lovecraft no doubt would have made a read of very similar material available at the time... thinking the connection is in the source material itself...which is awesome!
@@stephenblackcapecrescent3078 Old comment but you're most likely right with the true connection being in the source material. One of Lovecrafts favorite books was Witch Cult In Western Europe by Margaret Murray.
That's how the Devil actually is. Rural people know this.
@@nikoguarrolol "actually"
It also adds another layer of authenticity when you see the spurred boot. They actually made a whole costume for him (Google it, it's amazing). He's dressed like an English nobleman at the time, a Cavalier, the sort of people who were the sworn enemies of the Puritans back in England.
I have never understood why, even in horror movies, the devil has always been made ugly. Wouldn't it make more sense if the devil is trying to seduce you and get your soul for him to be handsome and seductive?

Okay. When he actually whispered it make a cold come up through my spine.
That voice is both scary and soothing. Love it.
WHY IS HIS VOICE SO GOERGEOUSSSS
Am I the only one that love his voice? Like 😳

i don’t care what anyone says, ‘wouldst thou like to live deliciously?’ is such a sexy line
Creepy as hell.... This movie was great.
It's a great scene - given that previously all the call outs to god by her family were falling on deaf ears. It's all about giving an answer to those who are lost and the devil is the only one giving hope and actual pleasure, not with a shout but a whisper. It's so brilliant as a theme.
The goat guy does have the advantage of existing, but he isn't much better than Yahwe with all that murdering and raping of kids.
I'm still shocked how good her accent is. Normally it's extremely difficult for Americans to do any kind of northern English accent
I’m sure she’s British so she’s got the English accent covered
Her accent isn't appropriate for the period. She wouldn't be dropping her R's if it was accurate.

I saw this as almost a happy ending, which is completely crazy. That's why I love this movie
The devil raped her

Loved this movie. This scene was amazing. Gave me goose bumps.
I would love to live deliciously. My favorite quote now.
This particular scene, as well as the entire film, was incredibly thought out and well acted. The line about "butter" is specifically significant but has gone widely unnoticed. I have an older friend, a lovely Italian woman, who lived through WWII in her town from the border of the former Yugoslavia. Food was beyond
scarce, people were starving during that tragic period. Men and women were eating raw potatoes and polenta, a traditional dish made from boiled corn meal which is how she and her mother survived. I asked her, did you top the polenta with butter
(which is paired well). Incredulously, she exclaimed, "Butter was for the rich, and even they couldn't find it"!
Black Phillip: Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?

Best part of the film. This film is especially resonant for my wife and I, having both grown up in a very orthodox religious community. That shit is so toxic. Join the witches and live deliciously.
and fly in the air naked n shit
@The Last Danite Most witches don't do that, and religion has driven waaaaaay more innocent people to insanity.
@The Last Danite Even in the film. Only one witch stole and killed a baby. And I think all of their insanity was from religion, not the witches.

"The witch" (2015) is one of the best horror movies ever made! This is classic already! Hello from Athens Greece!
I absolutely love how they did the voice
I've read so many people saying they didn't like how Black Philip was legit, and would've preferred the whole thing was some sort of mental trauma. I so disagree. When he straight up answers her in that voice almost shat myself. Great scene 👌
The camera not taking it's eyes off her is perfect.
It's watching a million thoughts go through her head; without giving her the cues or encouragements.

this scene put a chill up my spine
The book has many transcriptions of witchcraft trials of the time, I'm sure the director read the same transcriptions, probably in a different context but still.
