Alan Tudyk has actually made quite a tradition of voicing characters in Disney movies that doesn't have any lines
What's kind of funny about this movie is he also plays a small part as the old man who asks Moana about whether or not they should just cook Hei Hei (the rooster).
Did he ever play....a leaf on the wind?

It's so crazy to me that these guys were just crossing vast expanses of the open ocean thousands of years ago. It sounds terrifying to me with today's equipment.

He literally constantly and ONLY posts how he did something and "helped" someone. Like when Kevin Hart called him out for buying a house for his mom a few years ago. All his interviews were praising him for being a supportive and selfless son but Kevin was like "it's about damn time, you're a billionaire, you've been rich for 2 decades."

@@TrickyDicky2006I watched it as a kid, but then it took me another 30 years for my second watch because the discourse told me that it was an awful flop. And half of that was true. It was a box office flop. But watching it as an adult, it's actually a pretty good action movie with some amazing practical effects. A masterpiece? No. But hardly the atrocity some make it out to be.

My favorite behind the scenes clip is Alan Tudyk in the vocal booth recording chicken sounds and turning to the camera and saying “I went to Juilliard”
In terms of the “adorkable” kind of Disney protagonist began with Rapunzel in Tangled. The thing to realize though is that Rapunzel had a justifiable reason for her quirks. Another thing is that Moana is still a great protagonist because she doesn’t rely on the “I’m so quirky” attitude.
I think Disney has always done these types of characters; in example The Reluctant Dragon from the 1940's.
I mean, she's pretty much useless, because the ocean does all the work - and could have just given the heart back by itself.
Overall it's obviously more about the big guy to learn from his mistakes. Not really much of a clue what point Moana even has, beside maybe existing to stand for humandkind and remembering the halfgod what he really did all these things for.
@@miriamweller812 The ocean would not have been able to free Maui, nor change his mind/attitude. Moana does eventually come into her own and acquire skills, and she was also the one to figure out that Te Kā was Te Fiti.
@@richardthrust1126 I don't think so. The "original" princesses - Cinderella, Aurora, Snow White - weren't like this at all. They were all more elegant, graceful and beautiful rather than cute, bumbly and quirky (the way they've been since about the 90s).
Excuse me? Hercules didn't destroy a town by slipping, try to fight a centaur with a fish and then headbutt it, accidentally release a hydra, break the arms off a statue by skipping a rock, and awkwardly flirt his way into Meg's heart to not be recognized as Disney's first adorkable protagonist.

25:03 actually, Hei-hei _had_ a whole additional storyline, he was supposed to be a secret spirit of the wind to guide her, but the test audience thought with Pua [the pig] introduced first, having TWO intelligent animals would be too much, so his side story was dropped from the film; though when you watch the movie again, you can note at every actual step forward, Hei-hei is guiding Moana.
I mean we had the dragon AND cricket in Mulan. GIVE US SMART CHICKEN DISNEY!

I watched this with my 90 something grandma and when she saw Maui's nose, she said "hey, he has a nose like me! That's the nose of a hero!" So I have a happy spot for this movie and the power of representation.

Tamatoa, the big crab that sings "Shiny" is voiced by Jermaine Clement of Flight of the Concords fame, was a last minute casting, David Bowie was supposed to voice the character but he passed away before the movie started production
I’m of Māori decent and the grandmother in this movie reminds me so much of my own. I don’t tend to get overly emotional when watching movies but this one brings tears to my eyes every time the grandmother is on screen.
Hei-Hei was, indeed, voiced by Alan Tudyk, and this BTS vid is amazing...

There were several "head-canon" things going around for this movie, one of them was that Tamatoa and Maui go Waaaaay back and are more like each others frenemies than anything else. They seem to know a lot about each other. It's likely that Tamatoa couldn't actually eat Maui and knew he'd just throw him up in an hour or so.
The other was that Hei-Hei the chicken is actually a semi-divine creature who was always meant to accompany Moana. His actions, while seemingly random, often protect the heart or keep it close to Moana.

The reason the grandma died at that moment was that the Heart was keeping her alive.
But she also trusted Moana to accomplish her mission, even though it would cost her life.
The water graphics BLEW MY MIND when I first watched this movie, and tbh they still do!!
Thing to note : This is not just a Hawaiian cultural theme, all polynesians share a continuity of culture with some varying differences (tattoos etc.). The story of Maui is a universal one among Polynesians, even though it is the name of an island in Hawaii (i am born and raised here). In Hawaii the story of Maui is that he was a demi-god, with a talent for being a "trickster". It is like our version of Hercules, as he goes on to perform great feats of intellect as well as strength and leadership. Usually by fooling or outsmarting the other Gods in his travels.
I was introduced to this movie while my youngest child was in the hospital for about 4 months a few years ago. It became his favorite for over a year and we watched it 2-3 times everyday during that time. My older kids can quote the whole movie even when it isn't playing.
One of the best scenes, I think, is when she has capsized in the ocean and asks the ocean for "a little help." The ocean responds with a storm that ultimately delivers Moana to the island where Maui is. Sometimes in life, it seems like we are being put through tremendous hardships and it looks like things couldn't get any worse, but then we find that life or the universe or the Diety we believe in was using that struggle to put us right where we needed to be.
This is easily my favorite Disney princess movie. Two major goosebump moments were after she saw her ghost grandma, with the "I am MOANA!!!" and during her slow motion walk towards Te Ka, while Te Ka raced toward Moana. It was a great contrast.
Moana's grandmother coming to her to say "I know this was a huge ask. If you truly think you can't do it, it is okay to quit and go back home" was one of my favorite parts of any Disney movie. It is important to dispel the myth of always finish what you start. While it is important to always do your best, your best changes from day to day. Sometimes you might not be capable of doing a task, maybe only at that time. But later can try again.
It even adds more depth to those encounters if you consider that Moana actually dies at see. After which she can meet the ghost of her granny, various other spririts and after healing Te Ka, Te Fiti reviwing her. Only after that encounter she has interactions with other humans :)
The grandmother is one of my favorite Disney characters ever. It is my, personal, headcanon that the sea first chose the Grandmother to bear the heart, but she turned it down and chose to stay on the island. And that is why she understood what was happening with Moana so well, and kept the heart safe and did everything she could to prepare her for when her time came. She never forced or even convinced her to take it, but made sure she understood the choice before her. That is why she is so close to the ocean, and was, instantly, reborn as a Manta and was Moana's spirit guide. It's even possible that her Father was given the choice as well, and turned away from the ocean after his friend died. Which was why he recognized the heart immediately, but said it was just a rock.

Hands down my favorite "princess"-movie by Disney. And one of my overall "feel good movies" I'll put on whenever I feel like some good vibes. Yes, grandma dies but she's had a good life and she isn't truly gone for Moana. Moana's love for the ocean also very much speaks to me.
As gamers, you may appreciate this: The phrase that Grandma teaches Moana, “You will board my boat …” has all the characteristics of an enchantment or binding. Calling Maui by name, the precise wording, the specific task, etc. This is why Maui repeatedly interrupts her. He knows what she’s doing and won’t let her finish. You can’t trick a trickster.
The chicken _is_ voiced by Alan Tudyk. He does something similar for all the Disney animations. He's Disney's John Ratzenberger.
Isn't John Ratzenberger also Disnry's Ratzenberger since Disney owns Pixar?😜
Aan Tudyk is Pixar's Mel Blanc, but without the deserved standing and proper respect.
Blanc created the voices for Warner Brothers' plethora of iconic cartoon characters, but Tudyk does iconic quality work for minor characters.

This movie was impressively culturally accurate. The voice actor for Moana was cast in polynesia by the production team and the character was modelled after her. Most of the Va's are polynesian themselves (Dwayne Jonson's family is Samoan), and they had cultural advisors on site making sure that it was correct. One detail, for instance, was that they originally wanted to make Maui bald, but hair can symbolize power in polynesian culture, so they went through that ridiculous expense of giving him great hair.
Imagining Maui without hair is like imagining an Angel without wings... Just ain't right! lol
So fun fact, since no one else said anything, Disney started working on Moana’s hair 1 months ago after Tangled came out. So it literally took them six years to get her hair and invented three completely new vfx programs for just their hair
I love Moana's development, but Maui's personal growth was amazing. From being such a vain, self-absorbed, borderline narcissistic demigod to becoming a kind-hearted and loving friend and mentor is awesome, plus hearing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson sing is pretty damn badass. I love how they cast Nicole Scherzinger (lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls) as Moana's mother.
This movie is my favorite Disney flick next to Wall-E, and Auliʻi Cravalho is probably my favorite Disney singer since the OG Ariel (Jodie Benson). I've always loved Hawaii and similar islander cultures, so I'll watch this movie any time it's on. The song Moana sings to Te Ka as she's walking along the ocean floor gives me goosebumps every single time. And I'm a 44-year old dude, lol.
Fun side note. In the actual story, Moui was trying to steal immortality for humans. He turned into a worm, entered through a very personal area (if you catch my drift) but was killed when the OBSIDIAN TEETH within that personal area bit down on him... Obviously not as literal in the Disney version
This movie came out two weeks after my grandpa died. The grandma spirit on the boat scene got me so hard.
The 'End Credit' scene always makes me laugh.
I love this movie. I think this is the only Disney Princess(I know she's not 'technically' a Princess) with NO Love Interest. I love that. The music is just so powerful. Lin-Manuel Miranda know how to right great music that fits perfectly with the movie.
"How Far I'll Go" was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Song, losing to "City of the Stars" from La La Land. You should definitely look up the performance at the ceremony and watch it. It's notable for two things. First, Lin-Manuel Miranda performs an introductory rap summing up the premise of the movie. Second, Auli'i Cravalho gives an amazing performance, especially considering she was performing live in front of the world at age 16, and that she was hit in the head mid-performance by a flag carrying performer and she powered through it.
This is a big Academy miss. “How Far I’ll Go” is a much better song than what was maybe the weakest La La Land song.
Alan Tudyk voiced the role of King Candy in the film WRECK IT RALPH and has been a recurring voice-over actor in just about every Pixar/Disney film ... many of the studios think having him on a project is "good luck" and so far, they've done VERY good box-office returns on just about every single film he's worked on. So... even if all he's doing with his Juilliard-trained talents is standing in front of microphone and clucking like a chicken... they will pay him to do that! (*LOL*)
Moana is definitely one of my favorites ... I've loved it every time Disney has touched upon the Polynesian/Islander -themes, so far... (Lilo & Stitch) ... something about the vibe, the music, and the culture resonates with me. Thank you for watching this... I enjoyed re-watching it with y'all
Ariel was definitely quirky and awkward. There might be earlier examples of the trope, but the scene of her combing her hair with a fork immediately comes to mind.
Great film. I took my daughter to see it, she was pretty young and it was the first cinema experience she had. She was entranced, and this film always makes me tear up with the memory.
Cinema has the power to do that in the way no streaming service can, I think. I remember being scared witless by the Rancor in the cinema, it's a vivid memory from my childhood. Similarly, my wife and I saw Spider-Man: No Way Home, and then went back the week after with my son, who was about 8, and the look of wonder and joy on his face when the Spider-Men landed on the Statue of Liberty will stay with me forever.
Moana hits extra hard for me because when it first came out I was doing a leap year in New Zealand (from Sweden). At age 19 it was the first time I was abroad on my own, the first time I was that far away from home, the first time I spent more than 2 weeks away from my parents and the first time I spent more than 1 week without any physical contact with any relatives at all. While my parents weren't as over protective and my journey was much less epic and did not have the extra burden of saving the world from an angry god, I did connect on a personal level to Moana leaving home and facing the world all alone without any family or friends. Add to that that Maori culture in New Zealand is related to other Polynesian cultures, meaning while Moana is not specifically New Zealand, the imagery, the symbols, the tattoos, even the name Maoi, which is included in one of the Islands names in Maori, was all around me basically every day, in souvenir ships if nowhere else, adding to the connection I felt when watching it.
The crab's "Shiny" song is my favourite in the movie, especially when it powers back up after he realises Maui can't control his shape-changing.

Best scene of the movie in my opinion.
Arguably the trend of making the Disney Princess archetype character more what is considered at the time to be "adorkable" started with Ariel, as the whole basis of her starting character is that she is the outlier in her kingdom and has eccentric hobbies such as collecting human items. Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty all share the same characteristics of being a typical fairytale princess and Ariel almost 30+ years after them is what set the standard for how the Disney female protagonists were characterized from that point on.
The Disney Princess "Adorkable" trope/trend started with Rapunzel. It fit her character and story really well. People loved it and Disney keeps doing it.
For reference, the highest dive record is 192 feet, and the diver was injured in the process. The second highest was 191 feet, and the diver was injured in the process.
The highest successful dives without injury are several around 170 feet.
There have been several other attempts above 170~ feet that ended in failure.
This is for diving into water optimally and feet first. The risk of injury or death is much higher in other orientations.
I actually sail...and every scene that has sailing and music in this movie tears me up. Every...damn...time. It's great.

Yes! This is hands-down my favorite Disney princess movie and at least 50% of that is because of the music.
So I have a theory but it probably has holes. Its that the ocean saved baby Maui after he was thrown into the water for being ugly and took him to the island to Tafiti knowing he'd find the hook. That' he'd be able change his shape and be a hero to the same people who cast him out. The water and the island goddess took care of him until he grew.
Eventually ego and wanting even more admiration drove him to steal the heart of his island mother. The ocean angry stranded Maui and chose Moana to straighten him out. Maui seems like he is fairly close to Tafiti by his embarrassed shrug like a kid whos parent is disappointed in them. The island forgives him like a maternal figure at least and instantly able to fix the hook. The water and the island are basically Maui's mom and dad
Moana is legit my favorite Disney animated movie. And it's not nostalgia, I'm 32. And a man.
For me the adorkable, quirky lead started with Tangled, though it might have been earlier.
Probably Ariel was the earliest but it was during an era where they had a variety of female protagonists that didn’t have to rely on it (Belle, Jasmine, Esmeralda, Meg, Jane).

I always forget about the little guys on the boats, lol. I have seen this movie like half a dozen times, and every time I was surprised by those little boat dudes, lol.
Mulan was a klutz at the beginning of the movie who “dishonored” her family by ruining her “only chance”at the match makers. She gained confidence by playing the character of her “male” side for her father. Oooo, I don’t like being that “actually” guy… with parenthesis. Ewww. Another great reaction from yous guyses. One of my favourite movies. I just love everything about it. Both the scene where Moana meets the Ocean, and where she walks through the parted water to restore the heart of Te Fiti can still move me to tears.
You gotta give props to auli’i cravalho and the rock who are the voices of moana and Maui . Plus I’m looking forward to the sequel.
Moana, Lilo and Stich, Encanto are the true diversity Disney should be focusing on. These are wonderful stories that has not been told before on the silver screen. There are hardly anyone disputing or disagreeing about these movies the same way as the recasting of the other classic tales.
Moana, Coco, and Encanto are my favorite Disney/Pixar movies. I guess I like music in my movies. 😊

My younger sister was literally doing that exact same thing to me and I yelled in that exact same way. The brother-sister dynamic is strong…
Maui's character design was originally bald like The Rock. But a cultural advisor noted that the hair was a representation of mojo so a bald demigod would be out of place. She was also doing some modeling for character designs. So they gave Maui a head of hair modeled on the advisor's own hair.
I read that Maui's appearance was slightly based on The Rock's grandfather. Not sure how true it is or if it's just coincidence
@davidabercrombie5427 That's true - his physique design was based on him. He was either a boxer or traditional wrestler, but I cannot currently recall which.
Disney's adorkable lead, I think, started with Rapunzel in Tangled, then Anna in Frozen, then Moana, and the main character in Wish also has this trait.
Maui’s look is based off of the Rocks grandfather who was also a wrestler and actor as well as a famous singer in Hawaii by the nickname brother IZ. Also the tails of Maui is also Polynesian lore. He threw a rope to catch the sun to slow it down, he fished out the islands of Hawaii with his magic hook as well as a few other things that was sang in the song Maui sings in the movie
When I watched this, back in 2016, I kind of felt that Jemaine Clement channeled his inner David Bowie for Tamatoa the Crab.
Later I read that Lin-Manuel Miranda confirmed that it's what Clement was indeed going for.
To think that Maui basically shares the same origin story as the Penguin from Batman Returns.

Jumping from too high can be bad, the best way to put the odds forever in your favor, is to break the surface tension of the water before you land. At a certain height a rock could be enough to break the tension if you drive directly after it.
PS. Make sure the objects sinks.
Technically Maui does break the surface tension before Moana lands. I got to get it props for a somewhat accurate depiction.
I love this film. It's a modern Disney masterpiece. Very few Disney films have had a profound effect on me. The Black Hole blew my mind when I was 8. I had never seen anything like it. Aladdin was a surprise hit among my friend group in high school - both the movie and the soundtrack. I mean, it was Robin Williams!! Come on man!! Moana hit me at the right time because I had a three year old daughter at the time and we all went and saw it together at the theater. It was awesome! I think The Rock was perfect for this and I liked him in Jumanji too.
Maui's backstory is laid out in tattoos telling a story on his back. It's a backstory back story.

Haven't checked if they learned this later, but the dad is played by Temuera Morrison, who is Jango/Boba Fett in Star Wars.

Voiceplay does an incredible medley of the songs in Moana
There are so many thing I love about this movie. The question always comes up about why the ocean could not return the heart. The best response I have come up with is that just returning the heart was not enough, both Maui and Moana had to go through the journey they did to get there. The ocean through the whole movie provides these little nudges to keep them on track, but at the end really gets involved.
I think this movie is just absolutely beautiful, I could literally watch it with the sound off. Not that I would, but the hair and the water animation is amazing.

6:58 Why would anyone skip the intro? It's 30 seconds long and includes Simone's amazing improv channel names as well as George describing a movie poster to someone who can't see it. It's the best.
I've seen this movie so many times. It was my niece's favorite movie, might still be, and she'd watch it literally everyday. But I can't blame her. When I was a kid, I stayed home sick with a fever and watched Scooby-Doo on repeat all day.

Disney has done adorkable in the past but it's current iteration started with Rapunzel in Tangled. The current animation style really trends towards this attitude.
Previously you could look at characters like Jane from Tarzan (and her dorky, fangirling over Tarzan and the apes).
Fun fact: Moana's dad is voiced by Jango Fett himself, Temuera Morrison. Morrison also reprised his role in the movie's Māori-language dub, being of Māori heritage himself.
My first internal thought as the film begins is "Wait 'til George finds out who voices the chicken!"
Then halfway through, Simone repeats my words back to me!

Oh, I'm in tears again. Absolutely love this film! I grew up on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Didn't think much about how much 'coastal people' had in common (when I was a kid, I'd watch the original "Hawaii 5-0" and say, "..now *that's* an island! Not this brown stuff we're on!!"). Moved inland for work. Mom retired to the FL Gulf Coast, first time I visited I hit a local bar. Bonded with the bartender talking about repairing boats & nets & sailing as kids. He said, "Are you local? We have discounted prices for locals."
"No, I'm OBX. I just miss being near the sea."
He said, "Hmm...that makes you a cousin. I'll give you half of it."
Really made me think. Met folks from Hawaii, Galapagos, New Zealand etc., used my Florida bartender's 'we're cousins' stuff to share stories about living on (and in) the ocean. Realized the Atlantic was a puddle, compared to the Pacific. Oh, what their ancestors did! No damn wonder they thought "Mother Ocean" was a goddess. And that volcanoes could go back & forth between evil and good.

I feel like Alan Tudyk is a bit like the new Frank Welker, who also is a go to voice for animal noises in animation
the story and culture are based on the heritage and history of real Polynesian islands, including Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti. The legends and such are "real" and that makes it cooler to me.

Alan Tudyk has been the Disney studio's lucky charm since 2012, appearing in all their films. He's the chicken here so he could still be prominent without interfering with the film having an all-Polynesian cast. They followed suit in the otherwise East/Southeast Asian cast of "Raya" and the all-Colombian cast of "Encanto", having him just play animals or creatures.
The animator who did the tattoo animation was Eric Goldberg, the same guy that animated Genie in Alladin.
If you guys get the chance you should listen to the Maori version of the soundtrack! It's beautiful, and Jemaine Clement reprised his role of Tamatoa and really killed it.

As a white guy who was born and lives in New Zealand it was a refreshing movie for taking time to be based on Pacific nations shared mythology, we learned and read books about Maui and the like in school (including his rather ignominious death lol), while ive always been more into my own ancestral mythology from Europe and England, theres alot of interesting stories and movie potential from Pacific/Aboriginal/African/Native American mythology.
Definitely need more from that untapped vein... id love it if they did a movie about the Jackrabbit demi gods antics from North America, or Ravens.
Not sure if this is a “hot take” or whatever, but not only is this my favorite Disney film, it’s in my top 10-15 favorite films period. It’s just…really good 😊

My one critique of this movie is that everyone is after the Heart because it supposedly has AMAZING POWERS, but we never see it do anything. Not even instantly grow more food for Moana while she is on her journey. I wanted a reason why the coconut guys attacked for it.

I dont watch any disney because i always cry. My friend convinced me one day to watch Moana "its not sad" she said. 30 minutes in, she comes into the living room and see me balling my eyes out. I did "thank her"....

It’s finally time for a new kind of Disney princess movie with a strong female character, some catchy Lin-Manuel Miranda musical numbers, no forced romantic subplots and grand appreciation for Polynesian culture.

@@daurydavis3983 yeah, nowadays basically any movie staring a lady or a poc needs to be a fucking masterpiece otherwise the basement dwellers will flood the internet with their toxicity, hell sometimes even if the movie is good they still do that( at least the ones who aren't just grifters ). i remember when the trailer for prey came out and they instantly starting shitting on it for staring a woman, but when the movie came out and general audiences liked it they either didn't talk about the movie or they backpedalled with lame excuses and they don't even acknoledge the fact that they shat on it only because it stared a woman
