- How to add a radiator to an existing central heating system...PART 1
Today I show you how to install a column radiator onto an existing heating system on timber frame wall in a new room. I'll show you how to get the wall built, how to install the pipes and how to board out proper anchorage points on the wall to hold the weight of the new radiator.
The next video will cover the piping up of the radiator, teeing into the heating system and balancing for use.

Jamesy Boy...you're not still using pushfit stopends on pipework that you're going to be later reconnecting!?!? You crazy kid...instead use a couple old push fit isolation valves. Makes draining easier and avoids the "oops" if there's still a bit of pressure in that pipe. Also a rolled up rubble bag makes a good water catcher. Cheers matey.
Are you saying you can put a TRV on either the flow or the return pipe?
@@wtfMYRONL Yes on a universal TRV. Just look for those arrows!
You are my mate, I do everything like you though I am an Engineer. Recently worked with a carpenter put up a brand new roof and people asks me are you not an Engineer? Ha ha ha
Can you do a video on picNmix central heating pipe work. I have 12 rads and they are all running different bore pipe. Some radiators have 15mm coming in and 8mm going out. Would be good to see a video of pros and cons of each pipe size... Thanks lad.
Never laughed as loud when you burst into song at 9.30 🤣🤣
Sat in front of the wood burner with a cup of coffee watching this. Love it👍🏻
@Mp H
Good to see he starts his working day with a Very British Tool-a cup of tea.
If only the continentals drank more tea the world would be a happier place IMV.
@@colintawn3535 morning Colin 😀
James, This is brilliant, I enjoy the plumbing but as you say also the woodwork and other trades etc.
I do 90% of all my own work, it’s great to see how you tackle each job/problem and I can always improve my own
knowledge, skills and techniques. I look forward to part two, thanks for sharing, regards, Chris.
The carpentry is easy song 😂. You crack me up.
😎
As usual great video but I do think you should have cut your wood floor back screwing it down allows it no room to shrink and expand you could have trouble later
Couldn’t help thinking of handy Andy 😂 Thant’s not meant to be an insult, I love it when someone can lend their hand to any building and construction job around the home, it’s brilliant 🤩
I’m wincing every time I see your head so near those exposed sharp brackets!. I once saw a plumber lacerate his hand on a radiator bracket. I had to take him to A&E to have it stitched
Take the brackets off until you’re ready to rehang the radiator
Wow, feeling the flight of the conchords vibes man!
Would love to see you trying out some of the Evolution tools range, I was extremely surprised how good they are! Hell of a lot of tool for the money
I have the evolution mitre saw. I built garden room with it so had lots of use. It's great for DIY but it will be nothing like as good as the professional Bosch mitre saw James is using. I wish I spent more money and bought a makita or bosh professional. When you chop woood with the evolution you can see the cuts are quite straight and you have to mess about it but never quite right. Even straight cuts when it's locked on zero are not right. I had to change the bushes and I'm only on the second blade although I have a diamond blade and a cement board blade. Again lot of use bur they are a bit crap.
That saw is an absolute beast!!
Great song😂😂 it's got top 10 written all over it! !
This is probably my favourite of your videos, brilliant
Thanks very much!
I am a spark and I built my own garage, daughters bedroom, wet room + loft conversion. Plumbing done by a pro save for loft rad that was me. Just because you have a trade, does not mean you can only do that. I personally won't touch Gas for obvious reasons, but brick/blockwork rendering, plastering and carpentry I enjoy. A break from wiring.
That backing track killed me 😂 I was in bits! 👌🏻👌🏻🍺🏴
This is probably the best plumber i've ever seen.
Thats not a saw, this is a saw!!!!! I cant believe how much im enjoying the tune mate, 👍
Btw I love your movies about plumbing :p they explaining a lot even for plumbers who just doing new installation and never had issues with it.
'Carpentry Is Easy'. Hopefully No. 1 in the xmas charts 🤩
Shouldn't the plasterboard be cut a little off the floor, if you get water on the floor you'll get damp up the wall no?
@@surfwidow yeah that's what I thought. Great video and easy enough to use a multi tool to take a strip off the bottom.
Yes your correct, you should never put the plasterboard directly onto the floor for water ingression.
Dude! That door is EPIC! Please could you let me know where you got it from.
I agree - ive just sent this link to a mate so he can see the door that seperates the open plan space there aswell. great idea !
“Hold tight” if that ever stops I’m off your channel Jimmy Boy 🤣👍🏾 quality 💯
Hope that sliding door guide outlasts current occupants 🤣
Hahaha a singer too James a man of many talents
James you are a legend and I love all your power tools.
Enjoyed seeing the other non plumber work James. Good format going forward I reckon.
Can you make a video on how you remove the laminate flooring from under a stud wall , when the floor needs to be replaced? 🤔
Multi tool and lots of blades. Leave the laminate beneath the stud work. Mind you, I'd be more concerned about the expansion/contraction gap. Or lack of one. Especially, since the laminate is sandwiched twixt stud and screeded floor with plugs/screws.
Lol don't talk to me about Batteries lol... That chop saw is an Animal lovely bit of kit
Great video there! One of the better radiator videos out on youtube. That tool/carpentry song made my day! Thanks
Love the chop saw, I didn't realise they now do a battery version. I have the plug in version and it's great for furniture making. Maybe not ideal for site work though as it is heavy compared to the non-robot arm type.
Just noticed you have the exact blue DFS sofa as we have....also in pink for the missus :)
Taping as well james? Let's show the network we are the only trade that can do everything!
Great video as always, better than what's on TV these days. George owns that house! 😊
You're a man of many talents, the song was great too
Purely for the interlude song you have a new sub 🤣🤣🤣
Haha! Cheers man.
Talented and hugely informative. Thanks.
Probably a niche market, what about doing a vid about connecting a multifuel/woodburning stove to a central heating system?,an if it's at all possible.
Great video like normal mate, can't wait for part 2 👍 #alearmy
You should open your own plumbers college, I'd be up tomorrow 👍
I wondered how you had such a massive subscriber base with videos like this... now I know! 😂😂👍🏻😂😂 one of the funniest videos I’ve seen i ages, and I learnt stuff too! Earned a sub bruv 😂
Boy George :-) nice song! Great video's have saved me a fortune over the years.
Hahahaha!!!! You are a blast !!! Thank you so much for your amazing videos. I'm a fan now and I'll be following all your videos for sure.
Tanx for the upload looking forward to part 2👍
Great video. Can you tell us where to find the part you mention at 11:40 - the blanking plug that goes inside the gasket union? Ta!
You’re awesome mate, favourite RUclipsr, as soon as I’m making some decent money definitely signing up as a patreon 👍
Hello mate, thanks for nice comment! Just so you know I’ve closed the patreon thing. It’s all on the Join button within youtube. (Link👉 www.RUclips.com/user/plumberparts/join ) £3.99 a month for live stream access and lashings of bantzzzzzz!
I’m about to fit an 1800mm tall rad in my extension. What was the springy gizmo you put in yours. You mentioned blanking plug but this ones I’ve found online are just a blank nut. 🤷🏻♂️ Cheers for the videos.
lmao that song. fantastic
Is it not a bad idea to screw your stud wall onto the floor boards? Shouldn't there be an expansion gap between the wall and the floor boards? Nice workmanship otherwise!
Nice. Are you planning on putting any backing on the stud work? Just thinking that the glass door might get scratched up over time is something slips?
This is like Play School for grown ups...."and today grown-ups, we are looking at Plumber parts through the Round Window..."
Hi pal. Where did you get that amazing pocket door
Great as always not sure if I missed a bit about the sliding doors? what was the purpose of them? Also I usually take a photo on the phone before the plaster board goes up just for future if you need to find the noggins.
Nice bruv 😉 when's da album coming out 🤔
Lmao at your song. Simply red vibes 😂. Also the way that arm moves on that mitre saw is a thing of beauty.
was it already insulated under your floor or was it something you have added? interested to know more as my house doesn't stay warm right long
Did you keep the bit of tail you chopped off?! Also is that a clunge wall?
David!

Would be possible to get a link for the blanking plug please. I’m having the exact problem you have described with the water rushing straight through the bottom bar.
Thanks and great vids as always
I used one of these when I did mine. Works brilliantly. I imagine it can probably go on the flow or the return but I made sure mine went on the flow. www.bestheating.com/milano-flow-diverter-15mm-inlet-63476?gclid=Cj0KCQiAzsz-BRCCARIsANotFgP-qbHVoMPn_C4p_jKUEoXfhyffHfHQP2tGh7SxRmU27jag_OBCzW4aAmpmEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
these videos are amazing man thank you.
I think Sean Connery would have loved this vid.....(best Scottish accent please)
"Look at this Sexy saw Miss Money Penny"
Also love the Bum crack shot and of course the Em and Big G shot!
Love your videos mate keep em coming
As usual great presentation.. the song made me laugh out loud..
I love hot plumbers
As a chippy, you did make me laugh with your singing at 9.30 ish. You sounded like Boz Scaggs!
Why did you fix your floorplate on top of your laminate flooring? When your Missus starts saying she hates the flooring in that room, and wants you to replace it, you have a problem. I always place 'strengtheners' in, when fitting a stud wall that i know a radiator is going to be hung off. I get the customer to show me where its being hung, and take measurements from the rad.
Good video. Nice cat.
George the cat "extra heat ! " lol! :-)
Wish all plumbers considered skirting. Lol
George doesn't look happy because he wants you to complete that radiator work ASAP so he can have a warm room 😂
Get that song released. Christmas number 1!
Is there a particular reason for using plastic pipe over copper on this job?
What's them chrome pipes , with that compression , never seen them before
The song is just amazing!! 👏
Hi James , heating system in our two bed ex LA property is 8mm micro bore with 22mm flow and return would it be acceptable to add a rad by cutting into the feeds to an adjacent rad instead of going into the 22mm (which is the opposite side of the house) ??? The master plan is to tap into a bedroom rad f/r and drop directly below into the kitchen below to add a plinth heater .your guidance would be appreciated. plus how's the flying hope you are building the hours ? Takes me back to my days at Fenland Air Field, at that time two brothers ran the show there
Hi James love the videos iv got a attic converted i want to add a rad up there cause its freezing 🥶 can I just pull the ow and return from the bedroom up to feed the rad???
If it pressurised or if the F and E tank is higher you’ll be fine 👍
@@plumberparts cheers pal il let you know how I get on 😁
Hi where do you get the blanking plug from?
Hi James
which pipe pressing tool or crimping 🧰 tool was you using 🤔 m8?
For a moment I thought I was watching Robin Clevett. Just for a moment.
So will 2021 be the year the bathroom is finished and poor Emily finally gets to feel carpet under her feet when she gets out of bed ???
@plumberparts - 17:51 - I've watched this whole series of videos and I'm not sure you've talked about how many radiators should go on 15mm and 22mm pipe! 😄 Do you have a video on this? Search results aren't showing anything!
Hi Jay, I'll chat about it in this week's live stream. Open to all! Here's the link...bang the notification bell too! ruclips.net/video/TRJJjTkdENw/видео.html
@@plumberparts amazing! Cheers!
No worries!
Surprised you haven't gone for corner valves mate.
You know what I might get some instead!
@@plumberparts saves having to elbow it up. Looks a lot better i think
Hahaha that song 🤣
Loving the tune 👍
Great video!! Can you do a video on how to stop water hammering after you’ve changed a system boiler to combi boiler. Water hammering happens only after flushing the toilet.
Thanks
That would be good. We get water hammering once the water tank has been heated up to temp.
You’ll need a mini shock arrestor on the cold main feeding the boiler. Cut the main feeding the boiler, add a t and female iron fitting and screw the arrestor on. Job done.
House tour, so we can critique your construction skills 👷♂️😁?
What laser have you ordered and why looking to get one soon?
Nice work 👍
Hi here is a question for you , i have isolating valves on each flow and return radiator are they needed ? the reason i ask this is the last rad i want to add a tee piece to the last rad to add another small one past it but there is not much room between the pipes coming up under the floor with the isolating valves on to the rad valves itself , i was thinking maybe the second to last rad which has got isolating valves on them if i shut them off it would stop to the last rad anyway so i could just tee off from the last rad ? any help welcome .
What a tune 💃🏾💃🏾
Top notch mate 😎
your clock is still wrong from last year when I mentioned it. The 3rd was Thursday. good vid though.
Great video!
Love the funk 😎
Why do your Amazon Links not work and come up with a File to open (I am using Firefox on a Mac)?
Hi mate i think your so funny ha like you work ethic 😀
Love the song lol
That song...🤣🤣
you got the X factor / maybe
😆😆😆😆 i laughed too much at this
Funny as fuck loving the song
What type of pipe is this, is it 15mm barrier or a multilayer type?
Buteline 16mm I belive
@@MrEdd4004 i thought 16mm was only used for underfloor heating. Ive obly used 15mm copper for radiators in the past but going to be doing a new build with posi joists and radiators upstairs so require some decent barrier pipe. It mainly all seems to be 16mm, few 15mm like polypipe but usually twice the price as 16mm
I assume you have not had singing lessons?
Bosch isn't what it used to be back in the day
your clock is wrong Wednesday should of been the 2nd not the 3rd
