This style of the Swing Out Sister is called Sophisti-pop.
Thanks for the genre reference. I'll be sure to give sophisti-pop more attention.
Does it really???
Who else makes sophistipop? I dont know if i could say that out loud!
Huge SOS fan, and sophisti-pop in general...it's like the better UK alternative to that dreaded US cousin "yacht rock"...and SOS starting on album #2 Kaleidoscope World has been a duo...one of the members quit over their more organic Bacharach direction where they did away with synths & drum machines completely...
How about their track Twilight world?
I love their song "Am i the same girl" from 1992 ( a cover of Dusty Springfields song).
The follow up single SURRENDER is fabulous.
This group peaked too soon.
They haven't peaked yet.
This was one of my favourite songs as a kid! Classic 80’s 😍
same! i was still in primary school and could feel then that my family was pushing me to like "macho-sounding" glam rock instead of this nugget of pop gold. nothing wrong with a good degree of machismo or def leppard, but it just wasn't me.
@@chrismill5303 Yes it takes me back to 1987.
Corinne has always been a fashion person and that plays prominently in their videos. She is absolutely delightful, talented and very down to earth. Great, great choice. Try Waiting Game which I believe was the follow up hit. Your reaction has really put a big smile on my face. Cheers.
OMG!! What a shocker! I thought I was one of the few people that knew/remember this song. This has NEVER left my playlists over the years.
In the US they were really only highly known for this song. None the less we hold them in high esteem. How many bins can get by with one song? It's hard even for an artist to get by on one album. I wish we saw more of them, especially today.
They are still on my playlist as well! I’m glad there is another Swing Out “Mister” out there! 😃👍🏻
I continued to get their cds because I like the sound of big productions and popular music of the recent past.
"Almost persuaded " their latest Album. Still strong, brilliant, solid jazzy big arrangements since decades, charismatic live performers.
Almost Persuaded is an excellent album.
Horns and synths.? Let me suggest Matt Bianco, another 80s gem.
Yes, Matt Bianco, Sade.. the new jazz wave started in 1985...
Oh yes Basia. Fantastic. Half A Minute, Yeah Yeah, etc
Sade recorded a masterpiece-Smooth Operator
I was gonna say...Swing Out Sister always reminds me of Basia.
I have him and Basia's cd.
@@dtaylor939 Oh yes. Basia is a huge favorite of mine!
If you like 80's Synthie-Pop/New Wave, there is/was a band called Propaganda, they had a hit in 1985 called "Duel" and "Dr. Mabuse". They also had this elegant Synth-Style.
"P-Machinery" is a masterpiece too....
YES YES YES YES YES. P-Machinery!!!
I love "Dream within a dream"!
Another great German synth band is Alphaville. Big in Japan, Sounds like a melody and Forever young are all timeless gems..
Swing Out Sister is my favorite 80s Sophisti-pop band. Corinne Drewery just top. Twilight World , Waiting Game, You On My Mind ...
I feel you were born to grow up in the 80s. I’m sure we never knew at the time how amazing it would be but it’s my favourite genre ( if a decade is a genre ) of music. Can’t wait till you go through Kylies back catalogue. Please do Frankie Goes To Hollywood if you’ve never heard Relax. The voice and synths are amazing 😍
And another great 80s song with a positive vibe. And yes, the musical arrangements those days were different.
Curiosity Killed the Cat and The Blowmonkeys!!!!two more greats from the same period. And style
Yeah, "Ordinary Day"!
Digging Your Scene or Misfit would be amazing!
The Blowmonkeys! Good choice Sir.
I just finished listening to them before I logged on and saw this.
I'd add their track "It doesn't have to be that way" as well.
Horns, synths, bass...truly a fun, uplifting song.
I was 16 at the time - this is bringing back soooo many memories for me 😊😊😊I remember bouncing around my room with a hairbrush singing this 🤣
Another great artist from back then was Basia. "New Day For You" was a big hit! You also might like Siouxsie and The Banshees-"Peek-a-Boo". Totally 80's!
: )
Cruisin for Bruisin is definitely a Basia song I think he'd like!
@@midnified2227 Yes, that's another awesome song....
Hi Dereck.
I love your Channel and reactions and the tidbits of music history you give along with them.
I wish you would react & comment on Lisa Stansfield- "All Around the World (I Can't Find My Baby)"
Keep up the Good Work and again..Luv ya!! 👍
One quality band. Their jazzy track Twilight world is out of this world , yet much under appreciated.
My favorite 80s song!! ❤️🎶
Finally you've reacted to one the greatest band from the British invasion the trio and now a duo Swing out Sister and their breakthrough song Breakout..they still up to this time make great music..❤️❤️❤️
Do you like their track Twilight world?
@@sunilayya8948 yes, as well as fooled by a smile on their first album...but I love them even more when they released their second album.
Still rocking this song in 2023 !
Corinne : the sign of Talent an Love❤
Dereck i luv this song. Her voice and yes those synths.
A lot of the 80's songs have bridges. I miss them because a well done bridge can escalate a song to another level.
and a refrain part to introduce the chorus. also, why don't they have instrumentals anymore?
Bruh!....dont ✋ STOP a classic in
mid-tempo like THAT🎺🎺🎺🎺🎹🎹🎹🎺🎷😳😳😳😳😤😤😤
Another band, contemporary with them, with a similar pop/jazz feel was a band called Matt Bianco. You should check out their song, “ Get Out of Your Lazy Bed”.
OOOoooo, this song was so great...so much fun! Thanks for reviewing it!
Great song Dereck! Blast from the past!...omygosh! The 'tech-n-synth' is totally timeless!
I’m a Swing Out “Mister”.... always have been since the first time hearing Twilight World! 😃❤️👍🏻
I'm glad someone has finally reacted to Swing out Sister, you are a legend!
And I think you would really like Surrender and Twilight World.
Cheers from Down Under;)
From what I've learned is that Japan is where the most Swing Out Sister fans are. Here in the United States, I don't know any other people that choose to listen to them.
@@martyemmons8692 I can understand that. It's similar to so many songs from other countries but in particular the UK.
I'm lucky in a way coming from Oz because we got to hear both UK, US and our own music, plus a lot of other countries.
Breakout was played a fair bit down here when it was released.
@@hobotopper, my frustration is that when I finally got to see them live it was purely by accident. There were no commercials no advertisements. Still, I feel blessed to have been able to see them live.
@@martyemmons8692 Yes back then lack of advertising or commercials for a lot of touring acts was almost non-existent. I remember that frustration well.
Luckily you got to see them play live even if by accident, or possibly fate maybe.
Thanks for bringing back this song Dereck. Takes me back to my childhood back in New Zealand 1980s.
Classic song this; luv it too too much🥰
Suggestion : Everything But The Girl. From their jazzy sound to electronica sound.
Oh definitely, my favorite song from Everything But The Girl is "Each And Everyone".
I love this song. Brings back young self memories, and now I'm old😥🤣
SOS's You On My Mind is a must reaction. Won't disappoint.
Yes, Dereck! Always a perceptive point. Jazz quality! I used to listen to a smooth-jazz station, and that's where I heard this song.
Great Reaction, Dereck! If you like the synths and horns and positive vibes please react to ABC original video of ' When Smokey Sings' another fab late 80s bop that came out about the same time at this. Swing Out, Mister😂!
Am i the same girl, surrender, twilight world, and many other great tracks as well as the classic breakout. Total class.
Breakout has just about everything in out. But it's jazzy and synth elements, particularly the drums make it stand out as a song for all time, not just the 80s. And their remixes for Breakout are even better
My all-time favorite of theirs is the cover of "Am I The Same Girl". That song sure makes you want to go to some tropical islands and sip pina colada.
Haven't heard this song in years! Thank you Dereck! ♥♥♥♥♥
Hi Dereck.
I stumbled across your channel a while ago and have been a massive fan since. I’m from Australia, so have really enjoyed your Kylie reactions. I grew up loving Aussie pop synth songs in the 80’s and would love to see your reaction to Pseudo Echo. Don’t Go and Love An Adventure are great as well as the remake of Funky Town which was a hit in North America also. Please check them out!
Same here. I was lucky enough to work as a keyboard tech for most of the Oz synth pop bands when they did 1 of shows in Melbourne (It wasn't really for my expertise but more because of how I looked, which is so 80's for some reason). We had a world class music scene with our own sound, if you no what I mean.
I was an exchange student in Germany and got this album for my birthday in 1987. It is still a magnificent piece of work and my brother fell in love with this band and follows them all around the country… Yes, the band still exists after all these years and as good as ever.
Corinne Drewery has a wonderful voice. 👍 Actually, the real original music video from back in the day had splashes of color interspersed throughout.
This song stands the test of time. Up tempo feel good song never fails to uplift mood and emotions 👍🏻
Awesome reaction! Glad you liked it.
Surrender is another SOS track you should check out!
I remember this video being in color, not just the purple tone. Anyone else or am I just crazy? Loved this song back in the day!!!
This entire record was on point and it is still one of my favorites! I got it for my birthday in 1987 while living in Germany as an exchange student. It is a treasure.
i don't know what's up with vevo, but that video wasn't originally in full black and white. there were spots and accented objects in color and then corrine appears on the catwalk in an astonishingly blue wraparound dress. swing out sister was a classy pop act at a time when much of the music scene began to feel too "manufactured".
The word you're looking for is fabulous!
Love this song.
Derrick the Breakout. Video is even more Amazing you see in the original televised video every time Corrine the singer passes her hand in front of her face there's a Wonderful Color change try to find the original version I saw the video in 1986 I was 21 now I'm 56 and this song is still my favourite. Thank You for your reaction.Find the original version the color change is really cool and Beautiful .😊🌅🌅🌅
Thank you so much for this Dereck! Always loved this song 💖 it's so energetic!!! I
Both breakout and surrender reach the top 10 in the late eighties unfortunately that success could not be maintained in the singles chart although subsequent albums did well critically and financially and the group are still together performing today.
80s music rules!!!! S.O.S. Hall of Fame material...
Listen to Pointer Sister - Nutron Dance 🤗
Gracias amigo🎉🎉❤
This was a VH-1 staple! They had many good songs. Am I The Same Girl and Twilight World is also great.
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians!
Corinne is a really sweet lady. She has a lot of class.
Back in the day this song made people do something that today youngsters are not so keen of.... Dancing.
They are my fav band from 80’s , pure glam music
Love this band and song. In Australia the music video was in colour.
Swing out Sister is the classiest group that has ever existed. Check out “This heart’s for hire”
You NEED to listen to Everything But the Girl: Missing
I love your arms n your face 😂
If you loved Swing Out Sister, you can also check other artists who have a similar style of music such as Matt Bianco (More Than I Can Bear, Yeh Yeh, Don't Blame It on That Girl and Get Out of That Lazy Bed) and Basia, who was a member of Matt Bianco and then wen solo, with songs such as Promises, Run for Cover, New Day for You, Time and Tide, Baby You're Mine, Cruising for Bruising and Copernicus, to name a few.
Derek, love your reactions. There is also a video version with colors. Look for it!
SOS are still my favourite band and Corinne Drewery is still fabulous and sexy, my favourite song is "You on my mind" great song for a reaction . Keep up the good work.
hope you could also review other songs from Sade and Basia. Similar artists which both have great songs! Like Smooth Operator, The Sweetest Taboo, New Day For You, Cruising For Bruising, etc
Omg you stopped at the key change arghhhh lol
Try their single "Surrender"- the 12" Stuff Gun mix. A feast for the ears on headphones.
The original version of this video was black and white with colorized parts. I prefer it to the current lavender tinted version. Also, check out “The Waiting Game” from their follow-up album.
Try "Am I the same girl" (a Dusty Springfield cover), you're gonna love it too! Great reaction! I love Swing out sister.
I like this song and video, both uplifting and fun, good beat, good melody..I do think that it might not got the recognition it deserved...a good song to do a reaction on ..although the youtube world apparently mostly missed that..
The whole album is amazing
My era Dereck ! she was a fashion designer, bit like myself ! ( except i can't sing !! lol ) X
Great reaction/review. There was some great smooth female pop/R&B sounds in the 80s. You should do some some Sade, Gloria Estefan, Anita Baker, Manhattan Transfer and some more Swing out Sister. Cheers.
Que buena música se hacía en los 80...la melodia es una maravilla.
This was massive in London gay clubs like Heaven - definitely check out Matt Bianco in this genre - but frankly Basia is the utter goddess of this genre of jazzrock
Try the group Book Of Love. Great 80s new wave band!
I love this song 👍🏻 Plus she has a great name 😉 Well I would say that 😂 xx 💋
Somewhere in The World is great by them too imo
You’re right about the jazz influence. The group actually moved to a more jazzy sound in the 90s. Their albums are all brilliant masterpieces
This purple-tinted video is not the original version. The original was in color.
If you like synth ...react to p:machinery by Propaganda or Are friends electric or Cars both by Gary Numan or Subdivisions by Rush.
hola. Refrescante melodía y reacción. Gracias y besos. Por aquí acabamos el día con alegría..gracias
😀 nice video
Loved loved loved this track takes me back and still makes me smile. If you want another suggestion of a little known (internationally) super cool band from that era please check out Down to Earth by Curiosity Killed the Cat. They were a band from the 80s when bands were real bands who wrote and played their own music. They were cool, chilled and funky.
Their first 3 albums are pure gems. Please react to Where In The World, Waiting Game, You On My Mind, Twilight World, Surrender, Fooled By A Smile.
LOVEEE THISSSSSSS...........OMG.... please try You Set My Heart On Fire - Evans & Fisher , And say Hi from Jakarta, Indonesia
You should try the song Surrender by them, it's amazing
swing out sister are cool there music is different up lifting cool beats :) Dereck Reacts do a reaction of swing out sister waiting game and twilight world :)
it was 1993. I danced to it in a modern dance class @ SUNY Adirondack.
Try ...Am I The Same Girl by this band its another great song as well as others mentioned below
Just discovered your channel recently and I have become a fan! If you get around to it at some point, maybe you could review 'Twilight World' by Swing Out Sister. It's an underrated 80s song for sure, but it's so good!
🎶💗🎶
If you like brass in your 80s music try Culture Club's - I'll Tumble 4 Ya.
Am I The Same Girl is sheer brilliance, check it out!
Horns??? More like trumpets. LOL
