UnderSeat Bags: 10 Tips and Tricks

- Today I will share 10 tips and travel hacks for my carry-on tote bags. You may travel with a backpack. Some of you pack in a weekender or small duffel bag like this one. In this video I will teach you tips and tricks for these personal items that you carry on the airplane. They fit under the airplane seat in front of you. According to luggage restrictions for Delta, American and United Airlines these will all fit under the airplane seat as a personal item. I call them all carry-on bags. The number one tip is to travel with a personal item that lets you be hands-free. #tipsandtricks #carryonbags #traveltips #underseatbag

Been watching loads of tips on videos but have yet to see anybody say to take along lots of five-dollar bills and even singles for tipping people at the airport who help you! I use a wheelchair and especially in huge airports, the person who picks me up in the airport chair stays with me until I board if I need them to. Some have even offered to push me down the walkway until I get to the plane where I can then manage w/ my cane or walker. Don’t forget to tip for their service. I couldn’t travel without them!
Yes even though they are doing their job, we pay tips. They get paid minimum at best!
I agree 100%. My husband has to use the wheelchair also and The wheelchair attendants are really awesome. I like to have changed to be able to tip them
I saw an idea I thought was pretty smart. The traveler put the things she most wanted during the flight in a zippered bag she could pull out of her under-seat bag. After finding her seat, she'd pull out the smaller bag with her book, charger, snack, mask or whatever and she wouldn't have to keep diving into her under-seat bag for "stuff".
Excellent, I will Keep that in Mind.
Love that. Get organized before the plane takes off. Thx
This is something I'm still trying to perfect myself, but it does work!
Vera Bradley campus backpack
I do this! It's great. Two additions: after security, or at my gate, I retrieve hand lotion from my Liquids bag. On the plane, I put my Seat Bag in a ziploc bag before slipping it into the seat pocket under the tray. (I pack a ziploc for each plane, they can be to gross to reuse.) Hope this helps.
A great tip is to carry at least 2days worth of clothes in carry on just in case luggage gets lost
Yes, cue the compression cube for that. Thank you for watching!
Been there!
I've always packed for 3 days with the flattest pair of shoes!🤭
The TUBE works great for packing those clothes.
I always carry on pack my swimsuit...clothes are easier to purchase on the fly if your luggage gets lost.... swimsuits are not.
After take off, I switch my underseat bag to under my legs up against my seat. Than I have plenty of room for my feet, shoes, whatever. And it supports my legs during the flight. Just got back from an overseas trip, and it worked perfectly. Thanks for all your tips!
That is so true. Great travel hack!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I pull mine out enough to rest my feet onto it, takes pressure off my lower back which gets stiff when traveling.
My favorite bag has a black lining. I like it because it has lot of pockets for organizing. One tip I have not seen you mention is carrying a tiny flashlight (size of a pen) that clips inside one of the pockets. When I need something in the bag, I just click the light on, can see exactly what I want and then click it back off. It is such a simple solution to the dark linings in bags that are otherwise perfect. :-)
Yes, that's an excellent idea! My mother in law has one in a dish on the guest bedside table. It's cute. Thanks for watching!!
this is why I MUST have light or contrasting linings.
You can also use the flashlight function on your phone. :)
@@annalee2423 presuming you have that type of phone. Believe it or not, not everyone uses a smartphone...
I have a dark lined tote and have purchased bright color zipper bags to store items within the tote.
I just returned from 3 glorious solo weeks in 8 cities Spain! I used many of your tips and tricks! I used 1 small carry on and the great black/white backpack in this video.. The flight Attendant Was impressed With my packing skills...thanks to you! 1 thing I did That was extremely beneficial was index cards color coded by city with Air BNB information and address and dates. Excursions with dates times and addresses in the event that my phone went down while I was there. So if I took a cab handed the driver the address cardExcursions with dates times and addresses in the et was truly a lifr saver
Yes! Way to go. Did you see my hack on how to upload pics or docs to your Notes?k You can google it.
Sounds like a Happy Birthday is in order, hope you had a wonderful day!
Thanks so much! 😊
Mine is on the 7th-are we bday twins, Lauri?
I love that you get right to the advice and there are no wasted words- thanks so much for your tips
Hi Laurie. Love your very helpful videos for many years. Tip: Use Bootie Socks over regular socks & wear inside your sneakers. When you go through security & walk on that dirty floor, take them off inside out, and put in a plastic bag to wash in the sink at your destination. Do the same on your return flight. This way you don't put nasty/dirty socks inside your "relatively" clean sneakers. Tip 2: Before leaving home - Tie sneaker laces loosely so you can take them off easily at security, but they don't fall off. After getting through security, untie bow & put your sneakers back on more quickly/easily. Took me 20+ years to come up with these tips... ;) Hope this helps people. Happy traveling, whenever it's right for you. Blessings to all! :D
LOVE LOVE LOVE these. Thank you Ivette!
Yep, I do this, too.
Great ideas! For several years, I’ve used dry bags to pack headphones (small) and a medium that hold the stuff I want while in flight. They also are useful as actual dry bags to protect electronics in Your day bag or back pack while site-seeing in case it rains. The beauty of these is the closure. If you want your stuff to be dry, fold the opening over several times and clip closed. In flight, use the clips to attach your bag to the arms of your tray table - negates the need for your stuff to be in contact with the yucky seat pouch or actual tray.
Lots of people wear sandals or Crocs to travel. Many bring a separate pair of no-show socks to wear through security instead of going through barefoot.
I collect the socks that have lost their mates and wear them through security and just throw them away😊
Hi The travel salad dressing bottles are similar size to the go tube 2.5 Oz size and $1.25 at dollar tree.
TSA tips-frozen liquids can go through. I fill a water bottle 1/2 way and freeze solid. Then fill with water after TSA.
Makeup remover can be put on cotton rounds and into a ziplock bag. It doesn't count as liquid ! Skip liquid eye liner and use a pencil liner. Makeup samples are great if you can find them.
Yes, great travel hacks!
Hubby and I are in our early 70’s and retired. We are lucky to be able to fly and each check in 2 bags at no charge. So we check in regular and carryon bags so we don’t have to deal with arthritis and lifting carryons overhead. But that does make the personal bag heavy to carry to what always appears to be the last gate at the airport. I now use a smaller, underseat bag with 4 wheels (tried 2 wheels and was cumbersome) as my personal item. There, I take meds, 1 set of clothing, and everything I will use during flight. We are usually traveling for 3 weeks and thus need a bit more to pack.
Also, Amazon sells these valet trays that are totally flat, then you can snap them into shape when you arrive. We put our keys, change, glasses inside and keep it by our bedside.
Yes I show my tray in several videos 🎉
I love when your furbabies make cameos in your videos!
I always pack an old sock in my carry-on. I am a Coca-Cola addic so the first thing I get once I go through security is my bottle of Coke. I slip it in the old sock I think that helps keep it insulated a bit and it definitely absorbes the condensation.
I just ordered a black and white striped just like yours today. Thanks for the great information
I also ordered that one a few months ago. You will love it! I just got mine packed today for our vacation. ❤️
Love your videos!
You are so sweet to share all your knowledge. We rarely fly, so when we do it is very stressful. Thank you so much for your help!
Laurie, John here in Australia. Originally from Ireland, now living in Australia for 40 years.
When International Travel restrictions are lifted, I will visit family back home.
Visiting Bali, Indonesia, 3 or 4 times a year,(before COVID), I need my travel needs fulfilled!
I have used travel tips for many years and agree with all your examples.
Please allow the cat and dog to be part of future videos.
Take care and be well.........JM
Thank you for watching, John.
Omg! Tea snob here!!! That’s so great
Woohoo!
Great tips and very inspiring. Thank you so much. Here is one tip (maybe you mentioned it and I have missed it): for long overseas flights (i.e. Australia to Europe) when you can't change your undies for many hours I always wear panty liners. A change of panty liners fit easily in you personal items bag and Airlines like Singapore Airlines also provide them in the drawers next to the toilet.
I love my Vera Bradley campus backpack. Sturdy & cute. Very well made.
It has been nearly a year since I flew, so your info is so so helpful. I have picked up several items from Amazon and happy. This future trip will be smooth for sure! I was so happy to find you with continuing new info as things change, Keep it up!
🍀You don't look like your going to be 50 i believe 30! TFS! Take Care! ✨🌸🌷💗🌷🌸✨
I wish! Thank you for watching!
Loved it. Thank you. Very smart ideas.
Happy birthday Laurie! Many returns of the day!
Love all of your tips and tricks.
Thanks so much!
Love the look of your new backpack 🎒 can’t wait to hear the review.
Oh yay! It's huge and has tons of storage. I just need to get more to compare it.
Thanks for the light tip😊
Love your new backpack Laurie!
I love Lugs convertible bags. They really thought of everything. Yay for a new space, but we will still need Ollie visits.
Haha I'm sure he will find a way! I've heard such Good things about Lug.
Lug is fantastic!!
Just traveled from San Diego to Florida. We have tsa precheck. I had a pouch of wipes and ziploc baggie with a bottle of handsanitiser, I told the tsa agent if I needed to take them out. They said no. When my bag went through, they had to put it through a couple times, then they pulled it to the side. The wipes and sanitizer flagged it for them . They took it out and checked it. All was fine. On my way. On way home I just took out the pouch and the ziploc baggie and put it in a bin. No problem, went right through. This was the second time I've flown and my wipes and sanitizer was flagged, both times I told them I had it in my bag and should I take it out, both times flagged. So from now on I will just take them out even with tsa preccheck
I really prefer train rides. Between 9/11 and now Covid, too much of a hassle. 9/11 was 20 yrs ago and we still have to remove shoes and liquids. REALLY!
Great tips, as usual! One of my biggest prerequisites for a personal item bag is a light interior color. This makes it so much easier to see items inside, especially when it's down at my feet!
I just learned that last year.
Lug brand bags make all their bags in fun and light colors.
Agreed!! 👍
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie pop hi Ben in
I get light/bright colored stuff for in the bag, same reason. Black may be sophisticated but it's also invisible.
I’m so glad that you’ve mentioned that it’s mostly US airlines because once you hit Europe, these numbers decrease, and those bags are way too large. They will check in your bag if it’s one inch over. Thank you for mentioning the US major carriers
I also wanted to add that I absolutely love your energy… You’re always so perky yet casual and your delivery is really awesome
These tips are fantastic!!🎉
Happy Birthday! 🥳 I love binge- watching your videos!!
Yay! Thank you!
Hi Laurie, Thank You for these Great tips! Have a Fun and BLESSED BIRTHDAY!
Thanks so much!
Happy Birthday! These are some great tips. Thanks for continuing to share.
Thanks so much! 😊
Love your videos. Very informative.
Always joyful and full of great travel tips...thanks. I am looking forward to travelling again sooner than later. 😁
I hope it feels so safe and good for you to travel again. Thank you for watching!
One of my must haves is my sound machine........lol. It goes everywhere with me. It can be plugged in or runs on batteries. I don't leave home without it ! Always makes me feel at home and drowns out other noises. One trip a couple offered to buy it for a lot of money because we had spring break kids making a lot of noise......we were the only ones that were able to sleep. It is easy to pack because it's the size of a saucer. Love it !
Oh that's great. I think there's a noise maker app on phones or ipads too in case someone can use that.
Great tips as always. I bought the wallet and no spill lids. I appreciate the quick and easy links. Happy Birthday!
Thank you for watching! Thanks for your support.
Congrats on your new office area Laurie! Great tips as usual, thank you!
Thanks so much!
Loved the hot flashes joke 😅 You are so youthful and fun. I assumed you were in your 30s!
Amen!
Haha!
I use a Lug bag, I bought from
Qvc. Love it, fits under the seat perfectly. Also fits on my carry on for you to have a freehand.
Love your travel tips. Thank you
Glad you like them!
I love your tips and how you get right into them!
Hi, I am so glad! I learned that it helps YTube know what my videos are about too.
Love the lug summit. It’s become my all time favorite backpack. Open wide and inside is always easy to see w light colored fabric
Ooh thanks for adding your tip!
I have had a Coleman Rolling backpack for years as my carry on. No more having to carry a bag through the airport. It has a retractable handle, many zipped pockets on outside, compartments on the inside also. On each side is a pouch perfect for holding my thermos or whatever drink I want. Love your travel tips videos.
Love your videos! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge!
You are so welcome!
This was an awesome subject! I immediately clicked and subbed!
Thank you so much Laurie. Granddaughter and I are spring breaking in a few days. Have been anxious about traveling again. You calmed me down. Just knowing about things helps so much.
Knowledge is power and assurance lol. The myTSA app is helpful and you can ask them a question if it's a weird one.
We are in our 70's. We travel with one carry on and one personal bag each. We are still seeing people who travel with 4 suitcases for a 10 day cruise.
We never take more than we can handle. Thanks.Tina
Yes we believe the same! Sorry for the delayed response.
Thank you very much for all the great advice.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Another smart tips from a smart lady. Thanks Laurie.
Hope the tips help!
Yes, hands free! Less stress for women! You are the best! Thank you!
Also, packing sandwich bags or quart size bags to be used while you are traveling, is an excellent and overlooked idea. So helpful; thank you so much!
For bringing breakable souvenirs home, I use resealable bubble wrap bags my beauty products come in! Line the bottom of your suitcase and voila- you’re prepared to pack that special treasure!
I literally go on a trip tomorrow and on three flights so I am glad that you uploaded this video.
Yay have such a great time!
Happy belated Birthday! Thanks for the great travel tips!
Thanks so much!
Terrific tips!
Love your channel! Thank you for always keeping me prepared when I travel!! I have never ran into any issues thanks to you!🥰
I'm so glad! Thank you for watching!
I love my Tortuga outbreaker laptop backpack. It's great for underseat and has a ton of storage pockets. I've never had an issue carrying this on flights. It has a great tablet/small laptop pocket that's double lined. Great tip on moving liquids bag to the carry-on bag.
Great bags are great!
Love your travel packing tips. I always overpack.
I do for short trips for some reason.
Thanks so much for your tips! My wife and I used them on our last trip and didn't even check a bag! Very helpful!
The Lovevook backpack is AMAZING! Tons of zipped pockets, 2 side pockets, and trolly strap.
I love mine and the new light gray one: rstyle.me/cz-n/gz5z9bckgqp
Most amazing organization opportunities with that backpack!
Happy birthday Laurie! Thank you for all of your tips. I have an underseater by a company called destinations but I dont think they sell them any more. It worked well when I flew Spirit, Frontier or United basic Economy. When I flew to Europe I used a tote by Samantha Brown which matched my carry on luggage. Your videos have helped me seamlessly get through TSA and pack smarter. My upcoming travel will be the first since Covid but I feel confident I'll be fine due to your tips and the comments from this travel community. Thanks Laurie and to the community. Safe travels everyone 🛫
You're so thoughtful to thank everyone. Safe travels to you and more Samantha Brown!!
I like to put my travel essentials for the flight in a separate pouch/packing cube, so I can slide it out of the bag from under the seat and stock the pocket in front of me for easy access. Same goes for toys and snacks for my little one.
Great advice
These are great travel tips. I am also a pilot wife so I travel a lot and thought I had it all down but you have given me multiple new tips here. Now subscribing. Tomorrow I am going on a domestic trip to a couple of cities and flying for the first time in almost 2 years and binge watching your videos to get warmed up.
Ooh, have such a glorious trip! FREEE!
Happy birthday, Laurie! 50 is great, I promise ❤
Helping my husband pack for an international flight (lucky guy). So I'll be reviewing your TSA video tonight. Grateful for your tips and advice 🙏
Oh awesome!! I hope he gets an upgrade!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie he'd love that!
It be great to learn some sustainable travel hacks.
I have 2 kiddos and this bag is large enough for all our stuff. My friend from church loved it and brought one that same week. Very spacious and so many compartments.
Favorite backpack that fits under the seat in front of me is the EBags MotherLode Jr.! Happy travels!
Love that bag!❤
Hi Laurie, I have several bags and backpacks that I use for planes. I took them to a shoe repair shop along with straps of leather and had them attach to the bags/backup to make them able to attach my carryon bag.
I am so glad I found you! I love traveling and your ideas are wonderful
The rule is only for carryon so put big bottles of liquids anywhere in your checked luggage.
I love your bag with the black and white stripes and brown leather bottom!
Isn't it so cute and fun? I take it on girls trips or when I do not have a ton of stuff to carry.
My favorite bags are Lug bags. Great for travel. My favorite personal item bag is a Lug Via tote. It has hidden backpack straps and a crossbody strap. Sometimes backpacks are hard to get in and out of , with the Via you can carry on your shoulder while in the security line. Then as you get closer to the officers you can use the crossbody strap to wear on your shoulder (like a purse) once you put your passport back in the bag wear it as a backpack again. Love it. Makes airplane travel so much easier. The Lug steamboat is a favorite of my husband because it’s a duffel with hidden backpack straps.
Thank you for watching! I cannot remember the one I like-it's not the Beezer but something else. Trying to get them to send me a bag.
I love all your tips.
Even though I don't fly I am always looking for advise on packing. 💙💖
So glad!
About the plastic bags, that is such an excellent tip!
Oh good! Those bags are great for trips.
Wow - I travel all the time but I learned several tips from you. Thank you!
I am so glad, Jessica!
I like the Lug Hatchback backpack. Not huge, but the perfect size for me. Thanks for another great video. We need our Aullie fix, so make sure he gets some screen time in your new setting!
I totally agree! Thank you for watching!
Hi Laurie, I keep watching all your videos over and over again. The best videos on RUclips for packing for air travel! Can you tell I don’t travel much. 😂. I was getting anxious at the thought of packing a carryon bag for a 4 day trip until I found your RUclips channel. Thank you so much!
I am so glad these tips help you! A lady beside me today asked if the bathrooms were in the back of the plane. We are all at different stages.
Thank you
First, happy belated birthday, Laurie! You look very young. Your hack of putting an outfit in a compression (or even regular) packing cube inside your "personal item" is excellent, just in case the carry on is forced to be sent to checked baggage at the gate. I always make sure that I have at least a top and underwear in my personal item, just in case. I can't wait to see your new filming area but hope that Ollie still makes appearances. Have a great day!
Thank you for watching, Sherry!! Aullie sends his blinks.
I travel a lot for work. I am enjoying these so much- many of the ideas I already use, same as you after trial & error. I still pack superbly one trip & the next trip Its ''s all frustration. Hoping these videos will help me develop a stream line approach. Its a great series!
I totally agree Caroline! Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for these tips! All so helpful and I've put many of them to use for my big month long Europe trip! 😊👐
I cannot wait to hear about your trip to Europe. Glad these tips helped.
I Love this channel. Laurie is so helpful
Thank you!
Used a taupe colored backpack with an outer wide sleeve for suitcase from Target . Game changer that my husband finally appreciated on our trip! I also used the compression cube containing an outfit in the bottom of my bag, plus used tip about horizontal packing of liquids. These all were so helpful for our trip to Europe that ended in Greece. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have told my daughters about you so they can get your tips also! ❤❤❤🎉😊
Ooh was it beautiful there??
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie breathtakingly beautiful!
Lug has several bass that can convert to backpacks. I love their bags.
Thanks for sharing and for watching!
Love your videos!!! Now that I have the compression bags, a backpack, and etc. (I learned these from YOU) I am ready to try them out. Thank you for all this helpful information.
I hope your trips are great!
I love my Nordace Siena smart backpack. Love the content!
Ooh, thanks for the name of it Laurie.
I get SOOO MADDD when I've packed and have to give up my bag for them to check. 😡 great tip about the medication.
Right?! Someone said to pack in cubes so they can easily go through your stuff if needed. Thank you for watching!
I have trying a ton of personal bags when traveling. My go to bag is a Vera Bradley Signature Campus back pack. Lots of pockets for storage and really spacious room in big main pocket. The laptop sleeve section I use for my ipad and e reader.
I love backpacks! I just flew with one again and remembered how easy they are.
Hey Laurie you have helped me tremendously with new travel products and to pack my carry on bags. I never check bags so I am always looking to see ways to save space.
I love the large Indi from Dagne Dover and Puddle Jumper SE Backpack from Lug. Also love the Cincha travel belt for bags with weak trolley strap or a great bag that doesn’t have one!
Ooh nice! Yes love Lug
I often use a Pacsafe Go 25L Anti-Theft Backpack. And also a Pacsafe Go Anti-Theft Crossbody Bag. Especially if I am going for a city break :) They feature cut-resistant materials and strap, securable zippers, and an RFID blocking pocket.
Oh nice. Thanks!
I like my Osprey backpack. They come in all sizes and very lightweight. They also have lots of pockets and the straps secure it to your body.
Oh yes, I forgot about that brand. Thanks!!
Which osprey bag do you have for under seat? I'm getting the farpoint for carry on but need a new under seat bag since my Jansport backpack is pretty much dead after almost 30 years.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie yaowsers…my Osprey backpack is 20 years old….not sure if they make it anymore. I’ll check when I get home and see if that info is still on it.
Ahem may I ask what is a roller board ? Thank you
Thank you. I am traveling by air for the first time in two years. I will be viewing your other videos. Take care and stay well.
Yay it'll be great!
These are excellent travel tips. Thank you so much. I have packed a colorful lid for my jewelry.
Glad it was helpful!
I love your show even though I haven’t gone anywhere in over a year now, lol. I’d like you to do a show on essentials & how to pack for a car trip sometime. We’re planning trips in my minivan for the 4 of us. Some will be tent trips & some will be sightseeing & hotel stays. I can’t wait! Thank you for your channel!
Great idea!!
I'll think on that...but would you want organization tips and gear? My first thought is just use your suitcase. But then you get to pack pillows and snacks...I way overpack for car trips. But I love them. Hubby thinks of how many airplanes have taken off and landed in the first 2 hours of our road trip lol.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I love car trips! You get to see things even if just passing by & you can stop if something interests you. I over pack too so maybe gear, things to have in the car for safety, snacks, essentials to have upfront, things to do while riding, & stuff not to bring...
I have teenage boys now so they put their headphones on but I have a rule they can only do that for a specific time then they need to engage with us, lol.
I just started watching how to pack a car for trips & what to bring just in case. Because we will be tent camping, that’s a whole other subject entirely! So many gadgets for that & endless videos how to set up your car & camp sites... I’d watch anything you make anyways, lol
I love the ziploc bag tip! It’s so hard to find those types of bags in other countries like Morocco or Egypt 😂👌🏽
Thank you!
Great tips! Thanks again
You are so welcome!
😇🙏🏽 Bless you for all of these great tips 🥰🐶. I will be using these ideas for my 1st 🛫 Thurs ✌🏾💖
You got this! Here is a helpful video: bit.ly/FirstTimeTSALine
That’s an important tip about keeping medication with you at all times. Several years ago, my grandfather’s brother, who was diabetic, flew to Chicago to see us. He packed his medications in his checked baggage, and the airline lost his luggage.
Yes, a very hard lesson to learn. Thank you for watching
