Man, I'm impressed that you just shot them all without a leadsled or something like that. By the end, most people would be flinching like a toad in a hailstorm.
After sighting in at 60 feet, I could easily cover 5 shots with a nickel ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQt2uORDRfFOVSrO4idv4B90ThT6EOnEL ! Truly a pleasure to shoot! Scope was easy to adjust for eye relief. Only problem the varmints must have seen it delivered lol!Update: So impressed with shot groups at 30 yards I purchased a Hammers 3×9 with adjustable Objective scope! Now a true nail driver!
A nickel? I'd have to see that to believe it as that's 5 slugs perfectly thru the same hole. Sounds like BS to me.
The intro is proof that men will always be that 12 year old kid at heart.
Shotgun slugs are devastating on deer and black bear . Ive killed several deer with 12 gauge slug and my father in law has killed several bears and a truck load of deer with a 20 gauge slug . He made a believer out of me with his 20 gauge. His favorite Shotgun was a Ithaca 37 20 Guage with a deerslayer barrel . My favorite is Remington 870 police model 12 gauge but i did recently buy a Mossberg 500 20 gauge to try out . Thanks for the video 👍
Great job on this video review, and you held up well considering the recoil punishment that you subjected yourself to! I'm planning on doing one of these reviews for my RUclips channel, and from some of my past tests, I've found that FEDERAL and Winchester both performed well shooting through my rifled choke tube. But the overall winner was the FIOCCHI Low Recoil AERO slugs that are rated at 1150 FPS. Even my 20 GA tests prove that lower velocity loads shoot tighter groups than higher velocity loads!
Never seen fiocchi slugs
Watched, commented.
Pretty good shooting.
Definitely highlights the importance of running a multitude of rounds through your gun and see what pairs well. Whether it’s a shotgun, or rifle- different ammo works differently in different guns.
I love Federal ammo in my Benelli.
Out of all the slugs I tried (including all the ones in this video) - my preferred slugs are the TruBall and Deep Penetrator from Federal Premium. Even though I’m a huge fan of the Brenneke slugs, as well.
“My shoulder is getting a little twitchy.” Lol, that many slugs out of a pump gun would make anyone’s shoulder twitchy! Thanks for sacrificing yourself for the content!
Dec 2021, that was a great/comprehensive video, thank you. Still looking forward to seeing the promised gel test video of these slugs.
I think I'm going to put it all in one single video which will take a while because I have to re-make the block each time after every shot, and I travel 45 minutes each way to shoot. So basically it will take me 9 trips to the range to get all the footage. I still have every intention of doing it but it will take a 2-3 months. I guess I should get started then huh...
@@BuckeyeBallistics fully appreciate and understand. Thanks for the effort.
man, what an awesome test, professionnal quality.
I will do the same with my Remington 870 with a Carlson Rifled Choke before the deer shotgun season here in Quebec, Canada.
I keep you posted
Dammed fine video brother, love the fact you went bare shoulder. From one slug lover to another thank you and be blessed
Winchester super X for me. They've always shot the best in my browning A5. I have a Burris fullfield 2, 2x7 scope. I can touch holes at 50 yards NP ! I've killed countless deer with then. Great test, I loved it!
I found the video educational and will be looking for the Federal slugs for my Remington 870.
I've been using a black powder powerhouse lately that my last group put 3 shots into roughly the same hole at 75 yards with my Mossberg 500 with rifled barrel. I have no idea of the velocity.
Here's the load recipe:
1 - brass case and large pistol primer
2 - 120 grains black powder
3 - 1/8" card wad
4 - 3/8" grease cookie (50/50 beeswax and olive oil), 2.8cc dipper if poured hot
5 - 721 grain bullet (Accurate Molds 73-730A) that has been dipped into the same lube
6 - card wad punched from a cereal box and glued down with Elmer's Glue
Very cool. Any testing from a smoothbore? When I was using 150gr pyrodex behind a 300gr bullet in my muzzleloader years back, velocity was around 2100fps. 120/721 grains? Wouldn't be surprised if it was subsonic...
@@BuckeyeBallistics
Probably is subsonic; my wife said that at 75 yards, she could see the bullet through the spotting scope as it hit the paper plate. I haven't tried it out of a smoothbore yet, but given that it's .74 diameter, I would be hesitant to try it out of anything other than a cylinder bore.
Great video man!
Thanks
High low high low hits are usually breathing issues while on your trigger pull. I could hear you pulling a breath in before each shot
id be scared to look through a scope on a 12 gauge lol
It's worse on a 300 win mag, 338 win mag, 338 Lapua, 458 win mag. 12g with a scope isn't too bad at all
@jacob - All depends on the gun. I shot a .338 Lapua a few months ago and it wasn't anywhere near the recoil of the 12ga slugs. Things like gun weight, recoil pad, action, ported/non ported, and muzzle devices all make a huge difference.
@@BuckeyeBallistics sometimes I do forget about differences like you mention. I suppose my statement would be more true if it was similar weight and recoil pad with no device to reduce recoil and so on. I should say, my 12g guns aren't to bad with a scope attached lol nice video 🤙
Like you I have tried so many different brands and weights of slugs and found out that the 2 3/4" 1oz slugs have always out shot any 3" slug I have tried. Most people don't like the Federal slugs but in my guns they have always shot the best groups followed by the Winchester 2 3/4" even in my rifled slug barrel the Federals saboted 2 3/4" 1 oz along with the Winchester BRI 3" 1oz saboted slug shoot the same point of impact . As far as my scope I have had the same scope on my gun for 23 yrs and it is still holding zero. The Simmons pro diamond 4 x 32 it is still as clear as the day it was bought. I think Simmons sold the rights to that scope to Tru-Glo now .
Great video thank you so much.
Might want to hang on to some of those BRI if you still got em- discontinued.
I'd find a way to make an mold from them projectiles and then start casting me an private stash of slugs !
Awesome video. Something to think about: Accuracy is more about the distance from the bullseye or target in any direction. Precision is more about the spread of your group without relation to the bullseye. To me its all about precision
pick one, dial it in, and don't change ammo. Always find what that particular gun likes and stick with it. Just sighted in my .223 hog hunter savage 110 and it definitely likes federal 62gr ammo the best so thats what ill buy. The rifle absolutely hates the cheapo 55gr tulammo and the winchester all gr's. funny how it works but you can even have the same model rifle and it will still like a particular ammo that is different. My guess is the tiny variables during the manufacture (very tiny) just makes a difference. If you want to see some weird big differences try 22lr ammo comparisons i have 3 22lr rifles 1 ruger 1 marlin 1 savage and all three like a different ammo, the marlin likes federal 40gr the rugers like cci mini mags(federal cartridge company as well) and the savage likes remington 40gr golden bullet.
Great video. Enjoyed watching it. Down to earth. Keep it up.
My hat’s off to the shooter. That is a LOT of recoil to have absorbed. Also, my favorite, Brenneke, offers about 9 different types if 12 ga. Slugs…
These slugs were softer than all the 3 1/2" buckshot loads I shot a couple weeks ago lol. I want to get ahold of the different Brenneke slugs but they are impossible to find right now for a decent price. I had to pay almost $3 per shot just for the generic Winchesters a few weeks ago...
I was sighting in my peep sights for slugs the other day, and shooting from the bench where your body doesnt move much is like getting punched each time.
Yup
Alot of recoil is in the head!!! If it's too much try a twenty gauge!!
The only thing missing from your intro it’s somebody yelling “America fuck yeah”😂
That's how you know you want to subscribe though right? 😁
Great video and great shooting. Slugs are no joke on the shoulder.
Try 3 inch 12 guage turkey loads, you can almost feel the teeth in your mouth shaking loose.
In my experience, Remington makes great shotgun ammo.
Their buck and slugs are a cut above Winchester Super X for sure.
By far the most accurate shotgun slugs I've tested are the Federal TruBall slugs, which have a plastic ball that fills the hollow base of the slug. This system obviously works, because I get 2 to 4 MOA groups out of them.
I shoot a Mossberg 500 12ga. with the rifled barrel. So far, Remington Accutips, 2 3/4", have been the best. Federal Power Shok Sabots are also good but I can't find them. Been out for a couple of years. The Accutips are unbelievable expensive now, $5 per shot. I may have to try some Foster-type slugs, considering the results you show here. Good video. Thanks.
P.S. I can't shoot that many slugs in one session. I would be flinching so bad I would fall off the bench.
Try ammoseek- the Accu's are a little cheaper on there and you can set a notification for when they are even lower. The SST's by Hornady are about half that on there right now and those should shoot just as well.
Mossberg recommend Hornady sst for there rifled barrel from the factory. That's what I use very accurate.
@@burdellhillquist9252 A good example of no two guns are the same. I get really bad results with SSTs. The last time I tried (Nov. 2021), the first was off the paper (at 100 yds,.), the second was 1 3/4 low and 1 3/4 left, the third was 8 high and 2 right. I suspect the first went high. My typical results (as much as I have shot them) is two sort of close, the third somewhere else.
In the same session, the Federal P.S. shot a little low and right, the Rem. A.T. just about the same spot as the Fed. I adjusted the sight and when a deer came in range, the AccuTip hit exactly where I was aiming. Expansion was more than double with 97% weight retention. They work good.
Some of the SST results is me and some the gun. Still, the best results are the Fed. and Rem. I have some Brenneke K.O.s to try. I hope they shoot well. They're less than half the cost of the Rems.
I still have several boxes of SST. I'll trade for some Rem AccuTip.
Why would you shoot rifled slugs out of a rifled barrel? They're made for smooth bore barrels just saying!
@@jarin12ga Because they cost much less and are way more available. If they give good results, why not?
I would like to see how those do in a rifled choke vs improved
ruclips.net/video/JikCPctjfOw/видео.html
Nice, I know that ain’t cheap, so thanks for the demonstration.
Awesome video! Very informative. Don't blame you on the twitchy shoulder.
Sacrificed your shoulder to make a great video! Very informative Sir.
loved this one. would you consider shooting a set through a rifled choke? I seem to get a much better group with a simple rifled choke tube. Very cool that you are the only one shooting at distances you might find out hunting. Again, thanks for the effort and the video.
Already did that one, here is the link: ruclips.net/video/JikCPctjfOw/видео.html - It didn't go so well for me, but I think it's because the scope finally went to crap after about 100 slugs. On another channel I've seen 1" groups at 50 yards with a rifled choke, but with a better gun.
more great info, thank you. Keep 'em coming
Great comparison. I have 2 words of advice: Lead Sled.
I use mine and I can sight in a 300 Win Mag, a .270, a 35 Rem, a 30-30 in one afternoon .. And slugs lol
I prefer the mag version the 150 fps gain is huge with a one ounce slugs way more accurate at longer ranges in my humble opinion. I do love them ko shells in my wife's mossberg 500!
I have done an analysis like this 30 years ago with every available slug around.. I ended up shooting smooth bore 870 Wingmaster with a 21 inch with a rifled choke tube and Winchester 1 oz rifled slugs. First deer I shot back when I was young was 870 and Winchester slugs. All 2 3/4 inch.
Did a test a 212 Bolt. Those 300 gr SST are hard to beat at 200 yrd. I had some 3 inch Winchester 385 gr Supreme. It does two types of damage, one to the deer and the other to your shoulder. Never saw the need for 3 inch slugs.
A little twitchy you say!!! Ha Bore butter does wonders in making the first shot count.
I have to give you credit there young man. I hope your shoulder lives for another day!
My shoulder lived on to record the sabot slug video after this and also the rifled slug video lol.
Bud this what happened when I got done putting my custom stock I made on my Savage 212 bolt. Thought added enough weight over the cheep plastic. WRONG. I ONLY shot 2 of the Winchester Supreme 385 gr when they were 2000 fps. I had army pin on my hat and blew back so hard on the bench it sucked it right out of my hat!!! That gun and the 385's shells was a Christmas present to my son in NW Ohio. Lol he is bigger than me!!!
Man! I bet this was an expensive video to make. Everybody here is talking about your shoulder taking a beating but what about your poor wallet?!? 😂
Honestly I find recoil to be a bit more on most buckshot loads over the majority of slugs. (Makes sense w/the heavier payload n everything.)
Great video, thanks for all the hard work.
Then you should see my busckshot video from a few weeks ago where I was shooting 3-1/2" super mags (oo buck). Those hurt after a few! And yes slugs are very expensive right now and hard to find.
@@BuckeyeBallistics I'll go check it out, thanks. 👍
I swear by Brenneke. The KOs are awesome but so are their green lightning. Both are even better from a rifled barrel.
just got some 2&3/4 in 1 oz fed power shok on sale, great testing 👏👍 cool to see how it all stacks up
The up and down string is because you are breathing slightly when the trigger breaks. Overall good sight picture and alignment just remember you have a natural pause after your exhale before you inhale. That pause is when you want the trigger to break.
No, not it's not. I shoot less than 1" groups at 100 yards with my rifles, so to suggest I'm throwing shots inches up and down at an even closer distance is comical. I literally shoot guns for a living...
@@BuckeyeBallistics I also shoot and teach people how to shoot for a living. I’m not saying that you are a bad shot but the up and down group is typically seen when a shooter slightly breaths at the point of trigger break. And it’s a possibility that that happened because in the video you stated you were winded and on a time crunch so you probably didn’t realize it but yes I do believe that that shot string you were indeed slightly breathing. No need to get defensive and butt hurt about it nobody is perfect and I believe that the video is a good one but also needs to be redone due to the factor of being rushed.
Once again I'm telling you I didn't throw the shots several inches from breathing. But somehow through the screen you know better than me lol, nevermind my resume' and the fact that I was the one pulling the trigger, not you. Keep thinking you know better behind a screen than I do behind the trigger 👍
@@BuckeyeBallistics bud as I stated I shoot for a living as well and teach people how to shoot. I more than likely get behind a trigger more than you. I wasn’t trying to get your thong in a bunch just pointing out a fact and that it deserves another video because you were huffing and puffing after running a bit.
So you confirm then, that you think you know better from behind a screen. Got it 👍
I have done similar testing out of my 870 with smoothbore slug barrel, which has a fixed IC choke and rifle sights. I have found it likes the standard 1oz foster slugs from Remington, Winchester, and Federal. It seems to prefer the regular 1oz 2 3/4 inch round from Winchester. I'm surprised the 3" Winchester didn't do well in your gun, but keep in mind the way you hold the gun each time has a large effect on how far it recoils before the slug leaves the barrel, especially with more powerful loads like 3". I get vertical groups too when I don't hold the front of the gun down consistently. I'm not a fan of the Brenneke KO's, their classic magnum is a much much better slug and performs excellent out of a cylinder bore barrel. Brenneke Classic Magnum (or Green Lightening) for cylinder bore, regular foster slug for Improved Cylinder
Thanks for sharing your experience. Those green lightnings are hard to find...
@@BuckeyeBallistics That's true they are. Luckily I like the classic magnums better anyways
I laughed when I saw the Vance's price tag on the box. Good selection and fair prices in central Ohio. I go there a lot.
They used to be the best but they joined the bandwagon of screwing over the customers during the whole pandemic BS. Most of it has come down a lot recently to match most of everyone elses prices, but there are still some calibers that they think are gold and charge twice of what I can get it online for. .25-06 for example, $60.
@@BuckeyeBallistics very true. Don't try to buy a less popular caliber there. Online is best in that regard. But they usually got decent prices on 9mm, .223, .40 etc.
You did a great job ! Thank you
Thanks
Thank you for sacrificing your shoulder for my information.
No problem
Excellent bro,
Very well explained
Was the improved cylinder choke rifled or smooth? And thanks for the info which you took the time to do and to share.
Smoothbore. I did a rifled choke *and* rifled barrel test (with sabots) last year as well...
Thanks for the video.
Not a bad attempt at comparing the differences between makers in your shot test, but the only thing you need to take into account is the weight of the slug from the 1oz. to the 1¹/⁴oz. Being that it is heavier even with the increased load charge it will have a significant amount of drop compared to the standard slug. Hope that helps
If it's heavier but at the same velocity, then it will drop less because it will lose velocity slower than a lighter slug and thus drop less. If it's heavier *and* slower, then yes absolutely it will drop more.
Excellent shooting different slugs, i amm using moss 500 , well i think 23/4 federal is the best group. appreciate your work .
Was looking at videos for concealed carry type guns....ended up here.
Well... I do have a few reviews of just those types of guns. What caliber are you looking at?
Good info and great vid!!!
Dude , That's amazingly accurate considering , turning a shotgun into a Rifle , seeing a hole from fifty yards 😮 WOW 😳 AMAZING ! BULLSEYE 🎯🎯. OUTSTANDING 😊
I quit using shotgun for deer hunting cause consistency and cost but hats off thats alot on your shoulder
I use my .450 Bushmaster...
Now that's a deer killing caliber!!
This is a great video comparison for those who like slugs. A great follow-up video would be to use the same slugs in the same order at the same distance but use a Rifled choke tube, either the factory choke tube or the Carlsons, and see if the groups tight up on any of the slugs! Great job!
I posted a rifled choke video shortly after this one... not like you describe, but I did what I could with what I had.
@@BuckeyeBallistics Thanks I will check it out!
🇦🇺😎👍 And I thought I was the only man who was into all those things and more
This made my shoulder hurt
Sometimes too fast causes the bullet to destabilize especially from a smooth bore that’s why it strung those shots
look at the brenneke load data on their website. the ko at 75 yds should be +1.80 inch high with a 100 yd zero.
thank you very informative ...........
Great video thank you.
Very awesome video
Good Shootin Slugger
Wow! Your shoulder must be made of steel! You think the good groups would still be accurate enough to hit deer’s vitals at 100 yards?
Yes- those 3" groups at 75 shouldn't be any worse than 5" by 100. I even got the Winchester slugs out to 200 yards somewhat accurately with a screwed up scope in an older video of mine. I'll leave the link if you want to watch it, but be warned there is a lot of profanity. I used to have a lot different style of videos back in the day lol... ruclips.net/video/wfzLCvBNuwM/видео.html
How does a shell loaded with shot (not a slug) perform when fired from a rifled shotgun? In theory, its shot pattern should be more spread out than the pattern from a smooth bored shotgun, but I've never seen that theory tested. I have seen a test of a smooth bore shotgun fitted with a rifled choke, which turned out to have very little spreading effect. Thanks for any knowledge you can share.
853 Mossberg shotgun 3 1/2 inch shell's
Maverick 88 Rifled barrel 3 inch
I have both rifles one for Turkey 🦃
One for brush gun slugs it likes 1700fps or Faster I like.
So where in Central Ohio are you from lol vances and buckeye outdoors are pretty good stores
I'm southeast of Columbus, that's all you're gettin from me 😉 How bout you? I travel to Columbus area sometimes and do a round trip checking all the stores for ammo: Vance, Cabelas, Field & Stream, and a few others.
In the opening sequence (pistol shooting) your support hand thumb is overlapping your gun hand thumb. If you tend to shoot left low or left, that's probably why.. Just an honestly friendly and respectful observation.
Federal tru ball test would be 😎
Have you ever tried rifled chokes? I tried them on a smooth bore Franchi about 15 years ago and had great success tightening groups just shooting with the factory bead.
Yes- I'm posting a video today of one.
Do you think a receiver mount scope is more accurate than a cantilever mount scope with the mossberg 500?
Nice vid man
Thanks bud
Old school slugs - grew up hunting deer in Ohio with them!!!
This video was filmed in Ohio...
@@BuckeyeBallistics awesome n keep up the great vid work....🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Buena Prueba, Gracias.
This is a awesome video definitely need a Gun sled rest so you don’t get the Crap Kicked out of you in future!
Interesting video ... better your shoulder than mine ! Buffalo Outdoors got AWESOME results shooting rifled slugs through a Carlson rifled choke tube ... five shots in under one inch at 50 yds !
You might want to give it a try ?
I did try it, my results were no good. But I think it's because my scope was messing up because it failed shortly after those videos. I'll have to try again one day with it...
Looking forward to your Sabot test.

What kind of shotgun??? Maybe you said it in the video?? I maybe missed it. But i just love those looks on a shotgun, brown stock,,, just gives it such a classic look
I did say in the video... it's a Mossberg 500
@@BuckeyeBallistics nice,,, u ever get any deers with it
A few years ago. Took 2 with my muzzleloader and 1 with the Mossberg. I haven't had much time for hunting over the last few years but this year I'll be back out there again.
@@BuckeyeBallistics yes,,,, its always good to be out there,, regardless if you get anything or not
I do like the peace and silence and smells of the woods, never gets old.
Super!
Vertical stringing is no doubt a hot barrel.
or just check on getting a rifled slug barrel for that smooth bore mossberg 500, for the cost of 12 gauge shot shells that u already shot off there, u could have bought 1
Supposedly the Federal Tru-Ball is the most accurate slug out of a smoothbore?
That's what I hear- I grabbed a box to try sometime...
good stuff .
Per the marine corps marksmanship fundamentals your perfectly vertical groups should be a text book breathing issues
Except I shoot rifles 1moa at 100 yards, so I'm pretty sure my breathing isn't causing 8" groups lol.
@@BuckeyeBallistics I’m not saying you are a bad shot I’m just saying what the print looked like
Can't beat a 12 ga slug
What about 10 gauge lol
I still have a box of the 3" HV remington
I like to Winchester two and three quarter and I love my federal power shocks slugs I'd have better accuracy throwing the Remington slugs at something it would be more accurate
That's odd because they performed about the same for me in this video as the others.
sight in long range and shoot yur favorite rifled slugs with a rifled choke tube for yur smooth bore mossberg 500
A barrel will get leaded after a few shots. That will affect things.
Hmmm. Well it doesn't really look like it affected anything considering they all grouped about the same size groups, save for 1...
I get awesome accuracy with the federal 2 3/4 as well.
I shoot a 1" group at 75 with a mossy 500 w/cantilevered rifled barrel and sst's. It is 2" high at 75 with a 150y zero. I have it specifically for Ohio deer hunting.
I use .450BM in Ohio...
@@BuckeyeBallistics I live in the south and rifle hunt for the most part. I just have not changed it up for Ohio since the rule change.
No need to switch with that kind of accuracy lol, shoots just as good as the BM and it's even the same bullet when using the sst's...
What scope is this?
I find the KO works best out of my rifled 12ga. But I refer to my shotgun for self defense, if you only want to own 1 gun make it a 12ga. Pump shotgun,,,then go learn to shoot like this gunner here and develop your stamina for prolonged firing of slugs and 00 buckshot. They make shotguns in .410 bore, 20ga, 16ga, 12ga and 10ga,,,so you have a selection to suit your stature, but slugs and 00 buckshot for self defense, no matter if the shotgun is a hunting model with 24"-32" barrel, a "tactical" model with a "18-24" barrel, a pump action, semiautomatic, double barrel or single shot,,,get a shotgun, lots of ammo, learn to shoot very well, build your stamina, dry fire, find the slug and buckshot you like,,,safety is no accident, you work at safety,,,ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE FIREARM IS POINTED IN A SAFE DIRECTION ! Make sure the gun is empty when you "think" it is empty, never point a gun at anything you do Not want to Destroy, make absolute sure of your target and what is behind and beyond your target, it's not a toy or your private parts so don't "play" with your gun, practice don't just shoot frivolously, if someone is injured or dies by a shot you fired you did it, not the gun but you, so realize the responsibility of such a powerful tool for self defense,,,tttbotth
I would like to record one off a gun vise with no human error on a gun way over scopes and see what these would really do.
Well I shoot groups 3x smaller with my .450 Bushmaster, so I don't think it would do that well lol. The real issue(s) is that the Mossberg 500 is not a very accurized shotgun due to it's loosly attatched barrel that probably shifts after every shot, and then also this is a smoothbore barrel. If you want to know what the *slugs* are really capable of, watch the video Baffalo's Outdoors did where he put a rifled choke in his Beretta with a fixed barrel and got around 1" groups at 50 yards.
@@BuckeyeBallistics You are right. That's a good video and will make you think.
Why an improved cylinder instead of cylinder choke?
Because that's what I had
Judging on your groups, I'd say either your cheek weld or the scope might be the cause for moving groups. Don't take it the wrong way, but a better quality scope, mounted as low as possible, would go a long way. Trust me, I've been down the Tasco and Simmons path. And growing up in southern Michigan, where shotgun only deer hunting was allowed, I've had my fair share of trial and error with slug guns and scopes. Now living in Washington state, I have added many rifles, and shotguns, to my collection. And reload for them all. I've gotten rid of rifles dues to poor accuracy, only to find out later the cheap scope was actually the issue. Shotguns abuse scopes more than rifles, and some rifles will cause cheap scopes to not stay sighted in. I guess in short, after almost 35 years of shooting, my experience is it is better to have a $300 scope on a $200 gun , than a $50 scope on a $1000 gun. I tried to defy this logic when I was younger, but now know I wasted a lot of time and money in doing so. That aside, nice video! I appreciate the time, effort, and money spent to make videos like this. Keep it up!
I see what you're saying, but I don't think I would be getting consistant 3" groups if that were the case. Also the point of aim *only* moved once I changed the load, and every time on the dot on every load. But regardless I'm glad you liked the video. One day when finances are better I'll redo the test with a better shotgun with a fixed barrel instead of a floppy detatchable one, and a purpose built shotgun scope- same for the sabot slugs.
Tasco is good Simmons trash
@@jeffscuderi8662 Some Simmons are trash. I have one of their Presidential models 3x9x 44 that I mounted on a Marlin Model 60 22 rifle. That gun has been the death of 1000,s of ground squirrels. Almost as good of optical quality as Vortex scopes I have bought in recent years for 2-3 times the price.
I know your shoulder hurts but now you need to do the whole test over (with the exact same rounds) using a rifle barreled 12ga.
You are mistaken. Rifled barrels are for sabot slugs, which I am doing next. You *can* shoot a rifled slug like the ones in this video out of a rifled barrel, but the accuracy will likely be worse because it will spin the rifled slug too fast and make it unstable (based on some research). I'll try to do a video on this sometime as well and try to demonstrate. But to clarify, rifled slugs are for smoothbore barrels, and the sabot slugs are for rifled barrels. Lastly, my shoulder is fine- slugs don't compare at all to my 3 1/2" super mag loads.
@@BuckeyeBallistics interesting, tks
@@BuckeyeBallistics 2oz turkey loads are much worse than slugs.
That's basically what I said in the last sentence I wrote...
what tasco scope was used on your mossberg 500?
Tasco World Class if I remember correctly, but don't do it because the shotgun ended up breaking the scope a few videos later. If you want a cheap scope that can handle the 12 gauge recoil, this one that I am linking for you (my review) might be able to stand up to it. I ended up putting it through quite the torture test in the video, and I still use it to this day and it still hold zero: ruclips.net/video/xvyIWK2xUg0/видео.html
Shooting musket balls
Did you ever do the ballistic gel test?
Not yet- I was doing a bunch of rimfire and centerfire pistol gel tests earlier this year and then it got too hot to do any more for right now (knox ballistic gelatin melts in the heat). But, I began to realize that there are a few problems with trying to do this video...
For one, I saved one of each slug for the gel tests- that means close range shots or I'm going to miss with some of them (because the point of impact changes as you can see from this video). Well who wants to see them compared at close range? They'll all have the same effect and just shred the blocks which means one shot and I'm done for the day and then gotta come back like 5 more times (I drive 1.5 hours to the range and back round trip).
Aside from having to make 5 or 6 seperate trips just to record them all to finally get them all in 1 video, as I said, what is the point of doing them point blank range like that? People will want to know what they do at a practical hunting distance like say 50 yards. In order to do that, I need to buy more of each and most of them are impossible to find right now other than online and for like $2 per shot (if you can find them).
This may seem like a loaded response, but I assure you I don't mean it that way. I'd rather explain the situation than to just give you a nonchalant reply like "no".
With that said, I still plan to do it eventually (at 50 yards), but I need to get more slugs first. I might still do it this year practically point blank with the single slugs anyway, just to read all the hate comments about how pointless it was lol. So I may have that comming this year just for kicks, and eventually I'll grab a few boxes of each once they're not mythical creatures with mythical prices and do the test at a respectable distance. What's likely though is that I may be able to test just the Winchesters at 50 yards in a few months, because I do have a few boxes of those on hand...
Pretty good shooting with the fact of being out of breath the whole time,I wouldn't be real confident with my shooting
Might be your barrel heating up, causing your up & down string
what distance r u shooting?
Again, this being your second comment now on another slug video of mine- as said in the video, again, 75 yards. Perhaps next time try not to skip through so much of the video- it harms the algorithm and you end up asking questions that were already answered (part of the reason the video is as long as it is)
Did you ever do the smooth bore/rifled choke testing?
Yes but I got worse groups than I did here lol. I believe it was the scope however, because after that video on a .22wmr, it was slinging shots everywhere so I sent it back and they replaced it. I learned that there are shotgun specific scopes for a reason after that, or at least you need a higher end scope with the etched glass as opposed to the traditional reticles...
@@BuckeyeBallistics I was more curious about running the Sabot slugs thru the smooth bore/rifled choke configuration. Will the make the Sabots fly level, properly at say 150 yards or will they be tumbling like a chinese acrobat group and key hole? Thanks for posting this info
No clue, but I did test sabots at the same 75 yards through a fully rifled barrel, and results were only slightly better than in this video. Through research and discussions in the comments over these several videos, I have determined that to truly shoot slugs with rifle like accuracy, I need a shotgun with a fixed barrel unlike this Mossberg 500 where the barrel moves and wobbles with every shot. Here is the sbot slug video if interested ruclips.net/video/FkoF1MySgYk/видео.html
