  • Command Ops 2 is an operational-level World War 2 tactical-strategy simulation -- essentially, a wargame at the scale of brigades to companies with an emphasis being a commander (e.g. inclusion of orders' delay).

► Summary: Lommersveiler is a tough nut to crack, but the 35th gives it their best shot(s).

    ** Command Ops 2 description **
Command Ops is a wargame engine that lets you assess, plan, order and react at the operational level just like a real Corps, Division and Brigade commander.
Now, the smartest and most realistic operational level wargame just got a whole lot better. Command like a real commander in this pausable, continuous time simulation of WW2 operational warfare, where the emphasis is on planning, anticipating and reacting to enemy developments. This is not a click-fest and you don’t have to issue orders to every unit. The world’s smartest operational level AI can be trusted to do a reasonable job of managing your forces.

The endless firehose of artillery really controls the game. Only Americans could do that, but it's a beautiful thing to behold.

And it's a luxury we are really only afforded in this scenario. But while we got it, I'm going to use it!

I really want a game similar to this but with more RPG elements. Like you create a commander and you start at a low level. Depending on how you perform, you gain command of more troops. I guess it would be wholly unrealistic to move from a captain to a major general over the course of a war but it would be interesting nonetheless. Also the historic aspect is great and immersive but somewhat restricting. I'd like to have the same mechanics but maybe the Wehrmacht decided to commit an addition brigade to this battle just to add some more flavor. Somewhere between the overwhelming scale of HOI4 with the playable battles of this game. Similar to a total war game where you command both the large scale tactics as well as the units themselves, albeit not directly. These ideas are totally separate tho as the RPG aspect wouldn't fit into the grand strategy aspect. I feel like if history is a constraint then an RPG element would be necessary. If there is more historical leniency, then the ranking up system could be seen in the units themselves as well as their commanders, giving some longevity and weight to the decisions you make on the battlefield

You'll get no objections here, that sounds like an amazing game! I love RPG elements added in, which usually aids immersion, too. And such rapid promotion is unrealistic, but not in a way that really matters (i.e. seems like an easy condition to relax for more "fun").

New to the channel so not sure if you've played it, but I'm sure you've at least seen Ultimate General: Civil War. Thats the type of experience I'd like to see but the gameplay feels so linear. Im not sure if thats the history or the mission scripting but if you had that level of immersion and still had some say in the conflicts you found your troops engaging in, then that would be a stellar game

A bit late, but do withdrawing enemy units often try to retreat by road, or is that only armoured and mechanised or motorised units, while infantry hike it cross-country?

I'm really not sure but I think that's correct, except that I don't think infantry have any preference (none that I've noticed, at least) about the direction they retreat, so long as it's away from the enemy.

I ask as I wondered if the mechanics of the game would reward the player if they chose to send the 51st up to the crossroads south of Breitfeld to cut off the retreat of the German units from Lommersweiler.

I know, terrible backseat gaming (don't take it as criticism please): would it have been feasible to push along the roads, leave Lommersweiler aside to be cleared by the infantry, and try at least very offensive recon towards the next step? I do not own the game yet, waiting for Steam, but that really interests me

I really don't mind the criticism, von Moltke! Don't get the wrong impression: I really *like* constructive criticism, because I love to learn how to play better, and I love a mature discussion over strategy. (If we are referring to some comments on the Atlantic Fleet series, some individuals use poor language and just want to vent, and I even let those comments stand, but I usually don't dignify them with a response.)
To your point. If I understand, you mean push past to Bretfield with the armored group, probably along the North-South MSR out of Steinebruck, and bring the infantry west to push into Lommersweiler after they reassemble? It definitely would have been possible, but I honestly can't say whether it'd be better or not, and the only way to know would be do to try it.
By the way, the game engine package is actually free to download, and this is one of three included free scenarios. Check out the Lock N' Load publishing website.

Well, what I learned at officer school (German here, sorry for the English skills) was always about penetrating the line and isolating strongpoints :D But as I am not really familiar with the mechanics of the game, so I was just asking :D

Oh, I will definitely do that :)

A little heads-up, they altered the scenario by now :D Hans Kraut got 10 Jagdtiger in Lommersweiler now, so my plan would be rather difficult to execute :D

You're not ready for a divisional combat command.
