In Season nine of Smallville there was a special two hour episode titled Absolute Justice which was written by Geoff Johns and the story was about the Justice Society of America (or JSA) who were the team of DC heroes that came before the Justice League. In this video I give a plot description summary of the episode, and I go over some Easter Eggs which you might have missed. This video has images and mentions of all of the following DC characters: Superman, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Black Canary, Aquaman, Cyborg, Impulse, Hawkman, Doctor Fate, Stargirl, Star-Spangled Kid, Sandman, Hawkgirl, Flash, Green Lantern, Wildcat, Mr. Terrific, Red Tornado, Hourman, the Atom, Doctor Mid-Nite, Spectre, and many more.

The producers, writers, make-up, & special effects artists of Smallville did an absolutely incredible job of bringing us the legendary Justice Society. Doctor Fate is the most compelling super-hero I've ever known, and that moment he shoved J'onn J'onzz & we caught a glimpse of The Martian Manhunter's true appearance, still stays with me after all of these years.
The producers of Smallville should probably consider adapting a feature-length motion picture about the Justice Society for the big screen.
Hi Steve. If I heard the producers of Smallville were doing that, I'd be thrilled!
And this is why SMALLVILLE is a piece of history for superheo shows...they are like the Simpsons to South Park...they did it all before than all the rest...back in the 2000s when MARVEL was starteing to rule on the big screen...the only way to watch DC's characters on live action version was in SMALLVILLE(many of them hasn't still appeard on the big screen likeZatana,Dr Fate or the Legion,...and they show us a version of Justice League,Doomsday and DARKSEID and his servants from Apocolyps...
Ten years before DCEU !!)
THEY MADE THE FIRST LIVE ACTION VERSION OF GREEN ARROW,CYBORG,
Suicide Squad and AQUAMAN...and the JSA of Absolute Justice is still better than the one of LEGENDS OF TOMORROW
(in special Hawkman,Fate)
Exactly! I agree. Well said. Thank you, Jack.
Smallville also explained and did more with a lot less than today's 5 DCEUTV shows on CW have with much larger budgets.
Dr. Fate from this episode of Smallville and Flash from Batman V Superman said the same thing... that Lois is the key.
Interesting.
I love the comic book references! It makes everything come together nicely!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I found them very encouraging, and I really appreciate them.
I thought for sure Fate’s voice was a different actor. So good. Overall this story was a perfect stepping stone for Clark’s journey towards becoming Superman. Seeing the JSA gave Clark some inspiration to lead his own team and I like that he still wasn’t ready to call his team the actual Justice League yet.
For sure!
Michael Shanks was AMAZING as Hawkman! I was hoping to see him as Hawkman again.
Did anyone else wounded why Clark didn’t know who Jay Garret was in this episode after seeing an ID with his name on it in Bart Allen’s hotel room several seasons ago.
I don't think Clark can remember every word that anyone ever said to him.
Needs to be a Stand alone Hawkman action movie.
@@frenchybyrd4274 With the Hawkman of the Black Adam movie? I'd watch that!
I kinda always wondered how would smallville would tackle other vigilantes like the question or huntress
Some of Smallville's live action portrayals of comic characters were so accurate, and yet some others were so different. So I'd say there's no way to guess what Smallville would have done with Question and Huntress.
Joe likes movies n stuff totally agree with you especially since Lois dressed up as Huntress and Wonder Woman as a joke.
They would go all out doing the bikini and awesomeness at the same time.

This was a great episode which definitely made me feel like we needed a spin off Justice Society project.

Absolute Justice is the closest thing to a written Comiclike real Justice League movie, Well it is a real Justice league movie, We don't need the overdone Batman or Wonder Women, to me Superman has always been the center of DC and the other members in this movie are just as important to the League. Absolute Justice reminds me of why I love these heroes. Before all the sjw politics got into everything. Smallville had the heart and spirit of our heroes, something that is now lost.
RoboBoomStick, I agree with everything you said - except that this is about the Justice Society, not the Justice League :)
Pretty sure he was the flash and not impulse. That’s why he had red on. Both Barry and Bart are short for Bartholomew.
This was Bart Allen - Barry's grandson from the future. On Smallville, he was Impulse.
Great video thanks

Woah Wait!
How is Allen Scott's ring and lantern still on Earth?
Shouldn't it have gone back to oa?
Alan Scott is not part of the Corps. He is a different kind of Green Lantern.
Joe likes movies n stuff OOOOOOOOOOOHHHH
Man I need to read more Green Lantern comics 😅
hi Daniel, I don't want to discourage you from reading comics, but there are also videos on youtube you can watch to learn about Alan Scott's origins.
The JSA storyline on Smallville was a nice idea, but ultimately undermined by the network and the writers themselves. Using Watchmen as inspiration for the story was a good idea, but the Smallville writers failed to understand what exactly made Watchmen work as a story, and their JSA story did not live up to its potential. Icicle was a weak and inadequate protagonist; the theme of one generation of heroes passing the torch to another was not nearly as poignant as it should have been; and the story arc was too short and needed more than just two episodes. Seriously, they gave Lana Lang a five episode send off but they gave the JSA just two?
But most importantly, the story definitely needed Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince to truly have weight. WB's restrictions on Smallville in terms of what characters could and could not be used harmed the show tremendously, as did WB's refusal to allow a Gotham-style show featuring young Bruce Wayne to run as a companion show to Smallville.
Thanks for watching and writing. I disagree with you, but I did enjoy reading your view. I felt that this JSA episode of Smallville was better than Watchmen - which in my opinion dragged on too long... I do fully agree with you that Lana Lang's send off was poor, and did not need five episodes... I disagree that a Smallville JSA episode needed Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince. But I will say I wish it could had have more of Jay Garrick, Alan Scott and Ted Grant.
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff You're welcome. Actually, I was referring to the Watchmen graphic novel and not the streaming series. The writers of Absolute Justice said that Watchmen was their inspiration, but I felt that it could have been done better. I agree with you that the actor who played Icicle overacted his role, but I also felt that his character was the wrong antagonist (I made a typo earlier when I said protagonist) for this story.
The villain for Absolute Justice should have been someone more formidable, perhaps an old member of the JSA like The Spectre, just as Ozymandias was the main antagonist for Watchmen. Or perhaps it could have been an old, powerful adversary like Eclipso.
As for Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince, I just look at the scene in Carter Hall's mansion where Clark looks at all of the JSA memorabilia, as well as the big round table and the portrait of the JSA, and I think Bruce and Diana needed to be there for that scene for its symbolic effect; the three future founders of the Justice League seeing their predecessors and realizing they're not the first.
It should be noted that Smallville repeatedly tried to use Bruce and Diana and were repeatedly denied by Warner Bros. due to the studio clinging to an outdated model that reserved everything for their film division, not to mention their lack of foresight with regards to creating a shared universe in live action, where Marvel would surpass them. I also agree with you that more JSA characters should have been used, like Ted Grant, Jay Garrick, and Alan Scott, as well as Dr. Midnight, The Spectre, Hourman, the original Black Canary, and Hawkgirl, which is why I say that Absolute Justice was a story arc that required far more than just two episodes, perhaps as many as six.
As for Lana Lang, her character should have been gone much earlier in the show. Her relationship with Clark should have ended after season 4, and she should have been gone from the show by season 6, as she no longer served any purpose to the story by that point and only served to drag down the story. Anyway, thanks for the reply.
@@44excalibur Actually, I thought you were talking about the 2009 feature length Watchmen movie directed by Zack Snyder (before he got involved with the DCEU). I'm not even familiar with the Watchmen streaming series you're mentioning.
The villain in Absolute Justice could have much better. You have zero disagreement from me there.
I get what you're saying that Batman and Wonder Woman should have been there when the JLA first learns about the JSA. But like you said, the Smallville producers tried many times to get Batman and Wonder Woman on the show, but never could get the rights. In fact, they used Green Arrow as an alternative to Batman because he has so many similarities (both have no powers, both are really rich, both had their parents die as kids, etc). A lot of the ideas they used for Green Arrow (like young Oliver Queen going to boarding school with young Lex Luthor) were ideas they originally wanted to use for Bruce Wayne. So basically, you should think of it as: Green Arrow on Smallville was that show's version of Batman.
Lana Lang? By the end of her story on the show, her presence was ridiculous. I don't even remember exactly when her story went wrong. I'd have to look back at the show to say.
@@Joelikesmoviesnstuff Sorry for taking so long to reply. lol Yeah, there was an HBO series based on Watchmen, but it was garbage. I did see Zack Snyder's 2009 adaptation of Watchmen, and it was a nice attempt, but ultimately fell short. The truth is that the Absolute Justice storyline with the JSA needed to be much more than just two episodes. Such a storyline would've needed to be at least six episodes, which wouldn't have bothered me since I wasn't all that impressed by the Zod storyline from season 9, which also could've been done a lot better.
And yes, Icicle was a weak villain for that kind of storyline. The villain should've been someone like Vandal Savage or even Eclipso, and the storyline needed to better explore the themes from both Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns about a generation of superheroes driven into hiding and retirement by government authority, and a new generation of heroes inheriting the mantle. They also needed more JSA members like Doctor Midnight, Wildcat, The Spectre, Hourman, Jay Garrick's Flash, and Alan Scott's Green Lantern. They also could've revealed that the JSA Black Canary was the mother of Smallville's Black Canary, and I think it was a mistake to not have Hawkgirl there and for Shayera to be dead.
Well, the restrictions placed in Smallville by WB studio were to the detriment of both the show and the studio, and it undermined WB itself. WB only made three DC movies during Smallville's ten year run - Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and The Dark Knight - and Superman Returns was a flop, and Christopher Nolan's Batman films weren't even connected to the DC universe, so WB's restrictions on Smallville were not only shortsighted, but totally unnecessary. WB was clinging to an outdated format that was already obsolete by the 2000s, which allowed Marvel to beat them to the punch in creating a shared live action universe.
What's even more infuriating is that the TV show Gotham premiered only three years after Smallville went off the air, which makes Warner Bros. reasons for keeping Bruce Wayne off of Smallville even more nonsensical. The original idea was to have a show similar to Gotham run as a companion to Smallville, only with Bruce Wayne as a teenager and the two shows crossing over with each other. WB could've had a gold mine on television with that format, but they stuck to an outdated belief that movies shouldn't compete with television, even though the stories would be totally different.
Also, I honestly do not know why anyone at WB thinks that Bruce Wayne and Oliver Queen are interchangeable, because they're not. They're both billionaires, but Green Arrow is just a Robin Hood knockoff, while Batman is a transcendent character. Also, if it's not Clark, Bruce, Diana, Arthur, Barry, and Hal, it's not the Justice League, and for the life of me I don't know why WB doesn't get that. For a storyline like Absolute Justice, you at least needed Bruce and Diana there for the symbolic passing of the torch from the JSA to the JLA.
Lana Lang was the bane of Smallville. Kristen Kreuk was terrific in the role, but I think Kristen's popularity caused the network and the writers to forget what Smallville was supposed to be. Lana Lang is only supposed to be a high school love interest, and after high school ended in season 4, Clark and Lana's storyline should've ended as well. I think the network and the writers felt that Kristen was the female lead and felt obligated to keep her character at the center of things to the detriment of the show, even though they knew that Clark would ultimately end up with Lois Lane, and I think this became a cautionary tale of how not to run a television show, which is to not give in to fan service or place any individual actor's popularity over the best interests of the show and the story. Lana ironically ended up dragging down the show and became the most hated character on Smallville.
I liked this JSA more than the CW one.
Well, technically Smallville was a CW show as well. But I know what you mean... Anyway, I'd be curious if you could explain why you like this JSA better?
Thank, may God bless you and Everyone. ❤

Thanks, Daniel. I try to respond to as many comments as I can.
Too bad they didn't spin off or do a justice league show. I hope Arrowverse doesn't make the same mistake. ALso I hate that they didn't put the JSA in an alternate universe cause it makes less sense on their world. Instead they reused the smallville and the old continuity(which was already different when the arroverse introduced them). And they did it just to kill them off anyway. that's why its such a waste. Plus they already had introduce other earth 2 elements as alternate universe as well as a jay garrick flash. Seems like a lost of potential. I just realized smallville gave us a jsa and justice league-ish team up.
Plus I never realized the smallville black canary might be jsa black canary. or that jsa had a black canary.
Too bad that wasn't addressed in an episode.
Hi D. San. I heard that writer Geoff Johns originally wanted to have Dinah Drake (the JSA Black Canary) as a main character of this episode. He wanted to tell a story of her relationship with her daughter Dinah Lance. But actress Alaina Huffman (who had already been playing Dinah Lance on this show) was pregnant at the time, so Johns decided it was best to drop that part of his original idea.
this is still cool
Thanks, offinema!

Sylvester Pemberton, and his employee Pat Dugan, and Oliver Queen, were in the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Wes Dodds, Terry Sloan, Jay Garrick, Alan Scott, Al Pratt, Carter, Kent Nelson, Rex Tyler were in the Justice Society.
