Kooleen was right about the “dont listen to your friends” tip, because some classmates in 2021 said my art was good, but it fr sucked… like sis’ brain did not exist in the drawing yet they said “its really good”. Kooleen is right cuz people don’t wanna upset you. Now my art improved from using references and in 2021 i barely used references. Edit: you shouldn’t be rude either, just tell the person “hey, is it okay if i can give you tips to improve at art?” instead of “oh u suck u shld quit” because constructive criticism is more effective and encourages the artist.
That's why I watch her videos, it's just that people in internet are sometimes just be honest with your art more than your friends, that's something I need to improve my art
So true. I think siblings could be an exception tho, since my sister has and would most definitely insulted my art, writing, and anything. Also, asking for pointers is probably better than asking if something "looks good" since while ppl will usually say it looks good, they might also be able to provide some helpful constructive criticism

my jaw dropped when i saw this video because i regularly watch both colleen and sam haha, i see sam as more of a playful mentor while kooleen is kinda like the relatable artist we are on the inside but don't want to admit it out loud (the art cheats/rule of thumb tips/liking clout) so having both artists to watch on youtube is amazing (and both artists are also extremely talented)

I like how you give advice and how you’re able to explain other people’s ideas in more detail so that we get a more accurate advice and actually understand the tips. And I do feel like it’s wrong for people to just give tips and advice without proper, further or logical explanation because if an artist is just starting off they won’t understand and be able to interpret what they’re saying.

i really wish i had artists like you guys back when i was still an "art baby." i would've been able to go so much further with my artwork had i been given actual good tips and advice that for once didn't discourage nor scare me. there were so many things that i felt i wasn't allowed to do, such as viewing references or taking inspiration from other artist's and its what hurt my older work. but i have you now and its helped me tremendously so thank you!!
I might be late, but once, one of my friends asked me if I could draw them. I said "I dont draw ugly people" for fun. And she said "Ohhh. That's why you dont have any self portrait" and then we laughed about it. Best response ever.
To be serious for a second, it's not enough to just draw conventionally attractive people, you should draw attractive people from as many cultures and backgrounds as you can, or you'll get used to very specific types of proportions and then all of your drawings will look the same even if the characters are supposed to be extremely different.

I do think it's still important to practice tho, because knowing how to draw different face shape won't hurt. Art is a hobby first and a skill second, if you're someone who only draws for fun and isn't looking to improve then that's great too.

Kooleen was the first artist who didn't give me the impression that she wanted to appear as if she had stepped out of some idealistic fairy tale. I'm not an artist, just a guy who got a wacom for his birthday, I don't enjoy drawing (most of the time), it's tiring and frustrating, but I like to look at my finished drawings and see what random people on the internet think of it. Kooleen made me see that, although it is not my "vocation", I have the right to draw.

Kooleen is honestly so funny though. I don't avidly watch her but I've seen a few of her videos. If you guys want some good art youtuber reccomendations: Lavendertowne, Mohammed Adbagi, Duchess Celestia, and Muggen Mylle are my personal favourites. Leave your favourites in the replies!!
The thing I like the most about Kooleen is her personality like you wont get bored on any of her videos and she makes straight to the point tutorial that are very easy to understand

I took advice from someone whom was around 20 and I was like 13 at the time. She was an incredible artist and clearly advanced. I asked her for a tip and a tip she gave me was "shade with gray". My art always came out bland and dull as the final product and I never felt content with it. So just because someone who you think is good at art and is a "veteran" of sorts at art, and they give you a tip, it doesn't mean it's always going to work out for you. The reason why her art was more appealing was because she was good at drawing more advanced drawings than I was. She had more skills and knowledge in sketching and form, and even anatomy than I did, which allowed her art to be more appealing even if she shaded with just gray. But drawings are more often times than not, more appealing with color. So try playing with colors!! Shadows are not always gray, but they're sometimes, blue, green, or purple. :)
I just want to say Whoever that artist is meant well. Drawing/shading with gray is pretty much a necessity to condition one into drawing and familiarizing with values. It's a fundamental. It doesn't work for you, that's absolutely okay. I'm also a "veteran." Every formal art class will pretty much require you to shade with gray at first. wlop shades with gray. He always starts out with gray and blocks light and shadows in shades of gray. He eventually blocks in color and then it's detail from there. When he blocks color, he also changes the hue of the gray shades. One look at wlop and you can clearly tell he shades with gray. Same with Guweiz. CelestialFangs shades with gray too at first. Blocks with gray. Then blocks with color. However, Samdoesarts goes straight into color. Blocks with color, and chooses the _right hue_ for shadows and light. Basically, shading with gray works great as an undertone and works for initial value. If not, choosing the color that perfectly fits value and hue wise has a lot of eye and light training. And it depends on the artist.
That depends on your style but if you're going for something more realistic shadow is not only darker but also have bigger saturation. Also hue is changing a little

i really wish i had artists like you guys back when i was still an "art baby." i would've been able to go so much further with my artwork had i been given actual good tips and advice that for once didn't discourage nor scare me. there were so many things that i felt i wasn't allowed to do, such as viewing references or taking inspiration from other artist's and its what hurt my older work. but i have you now and its helped me tremendously so thank you!!

I might be late, but once, one of my friends asked me if I could draw them. I said "I dont draw ugly people" for fun. And she said "Ohhh. That's why you dont have any self portrait" and then we laughed about it. Best response ever.
To be serious for a second, it's not enough to just draw conventionally attractive people, you should draw attractive people from as many cultures and backgrounds as you can, or you'll get used to very specific types of proportions and then all of your drawings will look the same even if the characters are supposed to be extremely different.
And that's what a lot of artists need to hear. They have amazing art, but all of their characters look EXACTLY the same and it gets boring...
@@cherrypi2322 that's not 100% what I meant, I meant that if you don't practice drawing people from different ethnicities then when you do try to draw them they won't look like their ethnicity. like lets way you only draw hot Korean people like Koleen does in her videos, the next time you'll try to draw idk a hot European person they'll end up looking Korean, because your hands are used to drawing Korean face shapes.

I have for now a certain style, because I draw on my phone with fingers and it's so tidious. Yes, round face, round eyes, they look pretty much the same, because it's simple. Yeah, I want to improve, but I just physicly can't with my fingers
@@farnregen I don't think there's anything wrong with not wanting to learn different face shapes, it was just a tip on how to improve your art skills. I do think it's still important to practice tho, because knowing how to draw different face shape won't hurt.
Art is a hobby first and a skill second, if you're someone who only draws for fun and isn't looking to improve then that's great too.

Basically it's because Kooleen prolly does art what she likes (or loves lol) and it's just basically just hot ppl. It caughts her eye, your eye, and as well as mine. I'm sure she could possibly draw more than that or anything else but she's doing it for fun. She said she'll continue art but her planned career is in the medical field.

Kooleen was the first artist who didn't give me the impression that she wanted to appear as if she had stepped out of some idealistic fairy tale.
I'm not an artist, just a guy who got a wacom for his birthday, I don't enjoy drawing (most of the time), it's tiring and frustrating, but I like to look at my finished drawings and see what random people on the internet think of it.
Kooleen made me see that, although it is not my "vocation", I have the right to draw.

I took advice from someone whom was around 20 and I was like 13 at the time. She was an incredible artist and clearly advanced. I asked her for a tip and a tip she gave me was "shade with gray". My art always came out bland and dull as the final product and I never felt content with it. So just because someone who you think is good at art and is a "veteran" of sorts at art, and they give you a tip, it doesn't mean it's always going to work out for you. The reason why her art was more appealing was because she was good at drawing more advanced drawings than I was. She had more skills and knowledge in sketching and form, and even anatomy than I did, which allowed her art to be more appealing even if she shaded with just gray. But drawings are more often times than not, more appealing with color. So try playing with colors!! Shadows are not always gray, but they're sometimes, blue, green, or purple. :)

Whoever that artist is meant well. Drawing/shading with gray is pretty much a necessity to condition one into drawing and familiarizing with values. It's a fundamental.
It doesn't work for you, that's absolutely okay. I'm also a "veteran." Every formal art class will pretty much require you to shade with gray at first.
wlop shades with gray. He always starts out with gray and blocks light and shadows in shades of gray. He eventually blocks in color and then it's detail from there. When he blocks color, he also changes the hue of the gray shades. One look at wlop and you can clearly tell he shades with gray. Same with Guweiz.
CelestialFangs shades with gray too at first. Blocks with gray. Then blocks with color.
However, Samdoesarts goes straight into color. Blocks with color, and chooses the _right hue_ for shadows and light.
Basically, shading with gray works great as an undertone and works for initial value. If not, choosing the color that perfectly fits value and hue wise has a lot of eye and light training. And it depends on the artist.
That depends on your style but if you're going for something more realistic shadow is not only darker but also have bigger saturation. Also hue is changing a little
