Every time I hear this I’m back in 1979 rollerskating around Hyde Park. I had it on my Walkman. Subsequently I bought their albums and not a summer goes by that I don’t cut the lawn listening to Laser Love. I’m 63 now and I still listen to this band.
One of the most unfortunate bands. They were number 1 in the Capital Hit line with this song, and then got to number 40. They were then due to appear on TOTP, but the show was cancelled due to an electrical strike. Had this not happened, this could have been a big hit.
Friends of ATF at the time said the show was shortened for the Wimbledon tennis coverage. So the footage existed somewhere, at sometime, Sadly, knowing the BBC it might have been wiped.
I heard a story there was a toss between them and Tubeway Army to appear as TOTP producers didn't want two synth songs on one show. Guess which have won out.
Played once a month on Retro Charts Radio, along with every other Top 40 hit from 1952 to 1999. All 15,300 hits on random 24/7. It's a musical journey no one has ever been on before. No ads, no presenters, no news, no frills, just the music :)
I am 30 years late.... sorry about that... just found this outfits work and after listening to some of their back catalogue i am Gobsmacked as to why i haven't heard of them before now. Still.... a great surprise and always refreshing to find new quality choons :D
Never got the Air Play, that they so rightly deserved......same as Sniff n The Tears, especially with Driver's Seat from 1979.....a record dispute stopped the single being distributed....shame.... The Vapors are a great band as well....new album in 2020....it's awesome.....
@@jim7862 Roger Scott certainly played it on the Capital Hit Line in 1979, where it got to number one for a while, and had it not been for that success in London I not sure anybody would have heard of After the Fire in the UK again! However, One Rue For You was an excellent record that apparently had some success in Germany! You would have to part with a fair amount of money today to secure their album ... After The Fire - Der Kommissar: The CBS Recordings! As far as Sniff n Tears is concerned they did well outside the UK and although it is mentioned in various quarters that there was an issue with Dire Straits I still don't know what that was about even til this day.
I was 15 years old and nearing my finals at High School when this Song came out. Learned years later, it had sold enough records to be on BBC’s Top of the Pops. An appearance would have propelled it up the UK Charts as it was a catchy number. Unfortunately, the Producer of ToTP at the time decided that as they had booked Tubeway Army, Gary Numan’s Band, they didn’t need another ‘synthesiser band’ on the Show. Pity really because Tubeway Army went on to have a UK Number 1 with their record ‘Are Friends Electric?’. What say After The Fire’s catchy number? Crying shame but have fond memories of listening to this Song and still do.
I think the same as you do about this song. It came out 1979 but I keep it in my 1980’s music folder cos it’s def early 80’s style music. They were ahead of the curve, which is prob why it wasn’t a bigger hit. They were 12 months too early.
Wow finally found you Ivor & Piercy in the same video take. A classic. Remember 79 in the countryside with locals loving you. Best night noise they had heard was the feedback I got :) Used to love Ivors rather freehand idea of a drummers headwear :) But you all showed how new/off the wall/ special you were with your opening at greenbelt the first year (79?). Novice headline. Just stage goes dark then your into you first, pyros & all. No Wonder so many folks have special mems from that year!
I first saw After The Fire perform live in the mid 1970's. I saw them at Greenbelt too! The first Greenbelt was in 1974. I was there! In 1978 and 1979 I was working there. I'm one of the culprits who was responsible for building those infamous toilets they had in those days, which one or two people fell into, which was just a cesspit over which we had to erect scaffolding and cover with black plastic sheeting. We had no portaloos then, which would have saved us a lot of work!
I wrote 'one rule for you, one rule for me' on my lounge wall. We were decorating so it would be papered over. It was for my ex. We'd just split up and I knew she'd see it because she was collecting her stuff later that day and leave the keys to my apartment. I was relieved she'd been and gone woohoo, finally rid of one huge pain in the ass! I went out and bought the single. It's a song I'll never get tired of. 'Keep it toooOoOoyourself'. As for the nob head wearing the umbrella hat? If I'd seen him back then I probably would've given it a miss.
Of course, most of us Americans didn't know about their earlier work... just that one cover (you all know which one) when the band was almost done. BTW the synths sound amazing!
Just discovered this video. Oh yeah I vaguely remember this band. A Christian band I believe. It does kind of remind me if The Buggles, which is no bad thing is it ! I shall seek out more ATF. Thanks for posting

@scratchking1: I am just now seeing your comment, and I wasn't able to reply directly to it, but I just recently got a 2-disc ATF compilation, "Der Kommissar: The CBS Recordings", which has just about everything they did from '79 to '83 (although some of them are in shortened versions). I just love it! I found my copy on Discogs (Amazon has it also, but I found a better deal on Discogs). And you hit the nail on the head about the ATF " Kommissar" version having a better beat than Falco's original (although I love both).
Always loved this band and this track. Just on the button for today's politics I think. Not so many bands seem to make politicorock these days (says the old guy)
There was a conspiracy about Ivor Twiddle going round at the time he left about him being thrown out the band because he wanted the band to continue to write Christian lyrics. Not true at all as he had a heart attack on stage and couldn't carry on for his health's sake. He was real character though. He is now a Buddhist.
Ivor Twidell did not have a heart attack. As he said later, "heart attacks only occur in the publicity departments of record companies." In Autumn 1979 Ivor did collapse on tour due to exhaustion, but no heart attack.

Used to hear this a lot on Radio Luxembourg in the spring of ‘79 so I went out and got it on red vinyl. Should have been top 10 x
One of their greatest songs and IMHO one of their best records.
