Having lived there, Zion and the Reef are just as stunning, but in different ways. 😊

its a mistake to say "lower your expectations" I go to Capitol Reef every year and its the hiking and canyoneering that makes the park so great and unbelievable. Some of the most iconic and scenic areas are the Burr Trail, the upper and lower muley twist canyons, the waterpocket fold and the Strike Valley overlook etc. dont forget the Grand Wash nd Capitol Gorge.

I rate it very highly too. It's more of a hikers park than a tourist park. A little canyoneering doesn't hurt!

I loved Capitol Reef more than Arches or Bryce. I loved being able to drive up the canyons somewhat ( I am disabled and can’t hike) and it was such a a treat to see the canyons up close.

Capitol Reef really demands a high-clearance vehicle capable of two great attractions: Cathedral Drive (Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon). At least the last time i was there, that included driving across the Fremont River. And the other attraction is Strike Valley Overlook, a long drive down Notom-Bullfrog Road and then driving up a primitive road in Muley Twist Canyon. But the overlook is so spectacular.
CRNP is one park where solitude is abundant but takes a little effort.

My wife and I visited Capital Reef late summer 2021. We boondocked just outside the park at a beautiful location at close proximity to cliffs and trails. We stayed for 3 nights and spent a good amount of time in the park. We ate several pies.😋 Delicious. Also we were able to pick apples at one of the orchards right among the deer. We had been close to Capital Reef in the past but never stopped. We actually liked it better than some of the more popular parks and would highly recommend it. Thanks for another great video. 👍🙏👫

I'm planning the Big 5 trip for next spring. I'm a solo traveler. Thank you Cheryl for the note on the blooming of the fruit trees, I'll plan accordingly. I want to camp in Fruit campground, close to the pies! My favorite drive is thru canyons and this is the reason I look forward to Capitol Reef so much. For this spot I will plan 3 days to make sure I get to do what I want cause mother nature does not always cooperate. I so look forward to spending a few weeks in Utah. Thanks for the videos and great information.

I grew up in central Utah and my parents would take us to Capitol Reef as a Saturday day trip a couple times a year.
I lived in Utah from age 8 to 24 and my family still lives there. Over the years, I’ve been to every national park and monument in Utah as well as Grand Canyon and Mesa Verde.
For epic views - I rank Zion highest.
Bryce has the Hoodoos, but…. It’s not my favorite honestly. And camping there is pretty frigid at night - even in summer - due to the elevation.
Arches and Canyonlands - nice instagram shots and Moab has the best recreational infrastructure in the surrounding area.
But a problem with Arches and Zion is - they’re right off Interstate and the crowds are even more epic than the views. Jam-packed. Even on weekdays in spring.
Capitol Reef doesn’t have the crowds. Which as a local - makes it a better park in many respects than Zion or Arches.
Geologically, Capitol Reef is even more interesting than the others in some ways. It’s kind of a hybrid of the other parks.
It doesn’t have the prominent arches that Arches does - but it does have arches. It doesn’t have the sheer towering canyon walls that Zion does - but it does have canyon walls that would be jaw-dropping if they weren’t right next to so many other bigger featured parks.
Another tip - if you are traveling by road between Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon by road - spend the extra time and take the scenic byway through the town of Escalante. It’s one of the top ranked scenic byways in the United States - if you don’t mind driving on a two lane highway with parts on the top of sandstone hogs back formations with sheer cliff drops on BOTH sides of the highway.
And in early October - the part of the Byway that goes up into the nearby Mountains has great fall colors with all the aspen trees turning color.

Boom!! Everything you said is so spot on!! Only thing I would add is that Canyonlands Needles doesn’t have the Moab crowds and is fascinating back country!

Oh Gosh! I have never left a msg on RUclips but had such a strong reaction to your opinion that Capitol Reef is less stunning than Arches or Zion.
To me, Capitol Reef holds my heart over the other parks! The size and scale the Reef itself is absolutely AWE inspiring! Hickman Bridge, Capitol Gorge, Cathedral Valley and the Loop the Fold Drive are just some of the absolutely stunning sights to behold. Just had to defend my favorite National Park in Utah. ;)

Capital Reef was certainly one of our favorite parks. We visited in June (2023). We spent the night in Torrey for an early start in the park and drove on to Moab (~150 miles). It was one of our favorite parks on our 21 day trip to southern UT and northern AZ. We started and finished in Las Vegas and travelled over 2,800 miles. We didn't pack a lunch but found an pie (with ice cream) at Gifford's to be a filling solution!

Disagree. Its as good as the others if you get out of your car and do some hiking. Its underrated. Too bad its starting to get crowded though. Good info however!
