BOOM! love to see these types of techniques! I did something similar a year or so ago for fun where I took a thin cube and put a bunch of layered roughness on it to produce a sort of "painterly roughness" effect on the render itself. Couple that with the outlines from a toon shader composited on top and it looks pretty unique and stylized.
Octane Jesus Dropped this technique a while back, cool exploration on the shapes of the lens though.
