The Peak Of Mediocrity | A Need For Speed 2015 Critique

  • Need For Speed 2015 was an interesting prodigy. Ghost Games themselves seemed to be unsure of what direction to take the series after Rivals, and when it came to develop the next game in the series, they ditched everything that made Rivals good and started from the ground up. And how did this turn out? Well, let's just say its not my favorite in the series. In this video I go over why I feel NFS 2015 was flawed, but also how it created a failed structure for the future of the series.

The handling might not be the best, but they also provided a handling tuning option, so everyone had the choice to tweak the handling to their liking. The NFS15 has the best Multiplayer in comparison to Payback, and Heat.

NFS 2015 was interesting one for my experience. Like they had so many good ideas on paper but it either didn't work or was poorly done. Plus it didn't help the fact that Ghost was still a small studio after Rivals. While it was true that Ghost Games developed Rivals, you're forgetting that Criterion was the main developers of Rivals and Ghost were the co-developers. Stepping that aside, with how this game turned out, it proves that Criterion should've continued to be the main developers of NFS and depending what happens with Ghost, they can continue being the co-developers or have them work on a different game that isn't racing related.

I dunno. 2015 is one of my most favorite NFS games and I find that and the rest of the modern NFS games from 2010 and onwards to play very well due to how very arcadey they felt.
They all had brought back what was missing in the arcade racing genres these days when you had Forza, GT, or Forza Horizon dominating the console racing genres; an easy handling racing game with drifting during races. It's something I really love about these games more than the Black Box era NFS games where MW05 was very set on grip handling only which I was not really a fan of.
Maybe it's because my first NFS game was MW12 back in 2020, but the more I have played the Black Box games, the more I wanted to play the modern games. Nowadays, I have grown to like HP2 and UG1&2, but MW05 and Carbon just don't really do it for me and I find NFS2 and 3 to play better, imo.

Battlefield 4 drowned everything in water and shiny surfaces to make it look next gen, and Rivals is guilty of that too, the car is always wet, even in the desert and the rest of the map can get pretty shiny and wet too. 2015 just took it way too far with it tho.

Long story short, this game is a gem. An entry far from being perfect, but I haven't experienced such fun, playing a NFS game, since Carbon.
It's difficult to explain why I like it so much but it was an instant blast from the start. The atmosphere is unique, the graphics are great, the music selection is on point (especially the electronic-ambient tracks that play in garage), the races with other players and IA bringing some chaos within; I even liked the handling (I play with the drift set up).

This was absolutely the perfect NFS for me, and among Ghost's efforts (and really any NFS because I don't play "classic" games really), it's the only game I go back and play. I've beaten 2015's campaign a half dozen times and it never gets old. I appreciate the fact that, cheesy or not, the story is - racers wanna race - that's all a NFS really needs to be to be perfectly honest. Manu and Amy had enough charm to carry the rest of the group, but it was just the atmosphere, the city...but a lot of the little things that even Heat which I admit was a better racing game didn't do.
2015 made you feel like you were in this world racing. Each car feels UNIQUE. I think, while the physics are flawed a lot of people wrongly expected to be able to apply identical strategies to each of their cars and they cannot. Just like real cars you had to figure out how to get the most out of each.
The lighting and vibe of the game was just so perfect. The only issues I think I shared with you are the cops who, you could argue for story reasons were just kind of lazy/don't get paid enough to chase around tuner racers, and the always online. So often the game would say it was going down for maintenance only to kick me out but then be immediately accessible. Randomly kicking me out of the game is exactly why always online shouldn't be a thing. Especially since Ghost no longer exists to remove these problems. It hurts my heart that one day this game will go offline and become unplayable.

The weird thing about 2015's handling was that, in certain ways, it was actually more in-depth than payback's and heat's handling models.
If you managed to somehow tune a car just perfect (with way more sliders than the games after it), you had the option to properly weight transfer mid-drift, or spin out if you had too much angle. And unlike Payback, it was actually countersteering instead of the front tires always pointing into the corner when drifting.
The drifting itself also wasn't as painfully slow as it was in Heat, although way less controllable most of the time

some very interesting things about this game after playing it recently
    - if your internet is bad, you get unlimited nitrous (basically all the time if your aussie)
    - the AI ruberbands in every single mode, including the time trials. making it so you HAVE to sandbag or else deal with an impossible time to beat
    - You unlock a prestige mode after beating the main story, and the difficulty spike is attrocious. you could have a max upgraded ferrari F40 with unlimited nitrous and still struggle to hit the bronze star, let alone gold which is often 30+ seconds faster. Most people in the NFS community highly recomend certain builds and call prestige mode a bunch of crap for a reason.
    - cops are really so bad it takes 8~ minutes to reach heat 4 (never been chased long enough to reach max heat) where they *might* send 2 or 3 cars after you with some pathetic roadblocks. but most of the time it will be one lonely officer, who may even run away from you (scary job i know)

honestly the game was fun for me because I can get used to just about any game's physics really quickly and do really well while playing. Plus, I thought the cutscenes were funny because of the dialogue and how the characters felt like people you'd probably meet in 2015 personality-wise, because nothing was really "cringe" back then, we were all just having fun. Plus, I like the nighttime vibe it has. Feels very lonely and as if you're some rogue racer who left his past life, has nothing to lose in life anymore, and is a mission to conquer Ventura Bay's racing scene. I feel like with just the right improvements, it could be a very fun game.

One thing that traumatized and enraged me, was the fact that you could never pause the game, no matter if freeroaming or racing or being chased. It's like you're tied to a chair with handcuffs and forced to either finish the event or stop and lose or just quit it. Other than that, the only tjing that really annoyed me was how f-ing hard some of the races and events were, absolutely terrbily hard. This game is only for people who can handle extreme speeds, visual stimuli and don't even let me start with the rubber banding.
Ps: my most OP car was the Mitsubishi Evo with 0-100 kph/0-62 mph 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 380. The only car i was able to beat the complete game with aside from that giant F1- shaped hotrod beast (Beck Kustoms).

Although I enjoyed my time with 2015 this video does give me a new perspective on a lot of things and it brought good points. However towards the end I personally would give the 2 games after it (especially heat) more credit because imo a lot of issues 2015 has and payback had were improved upon immensely in heat (cops, risk/reward, upgrading system, handling etc). if I had to rank the last 4 NFS games personally my ranking would be Heat > Rivals > 2015 > Payback (i think it fixed a lot of issues in 2015 but brought a butt load of brand new ones too)

I am curious, would you be interested in making a similar review about The Crew 2? It's a game that feels really similar to Forza Horizon, Test Drive Unlimited and Need for Speed. Even feels similar to Midnight Club LA. The map itself is the entire USA, the carlist is decent but missing lots of classics, there's cars and bikes, boats and planes to pick from. The events are repetitive and the storyline is pretty much non-existent except the intro.
If it was possible, I would love to see a video game with The Crew's/TDU map size, Forza Horizon's car selection, Midnight Club's customisation and police chases, some TDU customisation and casino as well. GTA 5 has some of these aspects but online is filled with microtransactions and combat. I think you'd be able to shine a light on that in the review. I don't think The Crew is a bad game, it feels like it's missing too many things because the focus lies on microtransactions.

Let's be clear, customization was absolutely a huge feature. There is a not-so-small community of players that pretty much sit all day in the garage making the perfect build and wrap. This continues to be the case with newer titles as well. There just isn't much staying power for a nfs game or really any racing game if it doesn't let you build cars like nfs can at least for me.

  • @Otherface

The main reason of why I consider Nfs2015 as the second worst Nfs game (the first one being Ps2 undercover) is the fact that it grabs everything that made both the Black Box era and the Criterion era and make it terrible.
The story is cringy and sometimes non-existent, the physics are so bad that you can like B2d and still hate it, the AI cops are terrible (which, while being better than having not cops (i'm looking at you Underground) it still terrible), etc.
However the main issue has to be the crash cameras, and I hate the fact that no one complains about it. In other Nfs crash cameras are there to punish you for skill issue. In this game, however, thanks to the physics and the fact that it can activate just by touching a wall, it basically punish you for an error of the game, not because of you.
Honestly, this is probably the Nfs with the most wasted potential. The atmosphere is insane, but that's the only good thing I can say to it.

  • @thatcopenguy

I personally enjoyed NFS 2015 more than Heat. With night/ dawn the only time that the game sets in, the graphics & weathering are well matched to the "underground" vibe of the game. I very much prefer the visuals in 2015 than Heat.
The story is corny at times, but at the same time it hearts back to the current car culture, rather than trying to create some story that doesn't really have anything to do with it. It's the only Need For Speed that's really gone into real world car culture, and there's a relatability to it. The cool easter egg of the game that I love is that some of the NPCs refers to real life people ( Misha Charoudin, a RUclipsr at the Nürburgring, and the Photographer Larry Chen and his personal Nissan 240Z. In fact Larry Chen is the Photographer that took that final photo of the game )
Car customization was limited for european sportscars, but really good for the tuner cars and the game was developed to really capture the tuning scene.
Yes, there were a lot of things to work on, I find the handling a bit weird once your car is at 80% max power, and the cops don't do anything in the game.
There was a lot of improvement from 2015 to Heat that I appreciate, but I wished there was another game that had the improvement from Heat, but still captures the car culture like NFS 2015 did. 2015 had a really cool vibe that I will come back to. It's a flawed game, but one that I had enjoyed.

When I played for the first time, I was truly flabbergasted by the graphics and when the cutscenes changed back to the game, I didn't even notice any kind of change.
The problems that this game had is the horrible and uneven handling, like, you were able to crash your car at 40 km/h, and the AI in this game was also bad, especially the traffic cars were always in my way, but I still managed to finish it, I still planning to buy EA play to play it sometimes and with other NFS games
