  • Need For Speed's distography runs far deeper than just a single theme. The series has evolved countless times since its inception, and in doing so, created multiple eras in which fans of the series refer to in their respective time periods. Today, Serp looks back at the tumultuous "Supercar Era" and asks the question as to why these games are so over-hated, and shines some light onto why this may be.

black panthaa is not the reason why the game is bad🤣 the reasons are the budget for the game, the pressure from EA, the constant team changes, the difficulty of keeping everyone happy and developing the game in a now dated engine... I've been following black panthaa for a decade, and he simply can influence some thoughts during development BUT IF THE GAME IS BROKEN TO THE CORE HOW SHOULD IT BE HIS FAULT?

      @dr.sivavignesh664 12 дней назад +11

@@drift_works if he is not influencing by feedback to any extent ( 0% ) we won't be having any grind in the recent games. If recent games are like a rip off of forza horizon then grind should be non existent. They clearly focused on customisation without having a game underneath ( nfs unbound ). No way that happened without someone influencing the course of the game development. The singleplayer in unbound still has zero content apart from the 4 week campaign. Meanwhile the dead multiplayer gets new modes. How can you blame EA for that ? If that's payback like progression, yeah that's classic EA meddling with the game. The three things emphasised by theo are the problems nfs has now. Grinding progression , customisation and online multiplayer.

Need for speed was ruined by its so called die hard fans. It's bizarre that they didn't like pursuit weapons. ( literally hotpursuit and rivals are the only games that feature it). It's a grounded take on car combat with racing. They are too focused on progress and customisation that later nfs games had to lock spoilers and hoods behind dumb errands like complete 5 billboards. Classic nfs games had no customisation ( just pre existing color options for cars ) and they were okay with it. Unbound has customisation , but there is nothing to do in the game! 2 types of event, annoying cops that serve no role in the game other than to make you run around in circles trying to get to the meet up to start a race, way less tracks or circuits ( you try playing races and it's the same race after a few in game days), no transfer over of offline garage, rampant use of meta cars in mp with severe grinding almost to the point that it might be free to play as it's own game. I wonder why these people want to endlessly grind.

I may be biased towards this era since NFSMW2012 was one of my first racing games, but I'm able to justify my love for it as well. The cars are fast so you're never bored by snailing around in a stock Punto (no offense ofc, MW2005 is still very good), the graphics in all 4 of these games are absolutely fantastic and arguably better than the ones in recent NFS entries, and the map design, which you already mentioned, really perfects the experience for me. I bought NFS Heat on sale for 4 bucks and the map felt way too bland compared to something like Rivals or even MW2012. A real fall from grace in my books, only because the player base wanted something else...

Tuning culture has ruined racing games for me and especially Need For Speed as there is no more uniqueness with the cars. These old NFS games with no tuning upgrades or bodykits are great because it lets you become open minded and appreciate the cars in the game for what they are and perhaps even use cars that the player may not like at first but learn to appreciate its advantages and disadvantages.

Wouldn’t only being able to change the colors of your car or nothing at all ruin the uniqueness? Customizing your car with body kits and vinyls are what makes it unique. Not just changing the color of your car. If u just want to change the color of your car in the modern nfs games then u can but why should they remove the visual parts for that?

@@Noah2Great I mean, it kinda makes sense because most people customize cars to "super wide, slammed to the ground with big wings, splitters and diffusers" and all cars become that general thing, which kinda muddies in a way the subtle differences in curves and body design even from supercar to supercar because they all just become widebody slammed machines, instead of retaining a very unique and different body like in HPs, despite the Zonda, Viper ACR10 and the Carrera GT fulfilling the great all around + cornering machines, they are so different in appearance, that makes them unique on their own, if you added customization to it, most people would 100% do what I said before, therefore becoming less unique, if most people are customizing a specific style, what seems like a way to make your stuff unique just becomes less with how much it is being done,
Not to say some people do make different stuff, and they really shine in uniqueness for the fact of being so wildly different to what most people do, but in HP, the cars are unique because every car on the car list is so wildly different, except the repeats like the Gallardos, roadsters, etc. But even then, they also are different in driving and have cons and pros, normal Gallardo is fastest on straight line, the Balboni Gallardo is overall fastest, and the Superleggera is the most maneuverable and lightest of all, which aids it when competing to the other Gallardos, even the normal one

This is something i've been saying for a long time now that the racing game community is to blame for why the racing games scene is so dead and bland now. The reason everyone is chasing Forza (Even a game like TDU) is because the community wanted it. They want every racing game to have Forza's handling and open world with NFS's customization so of course every new title is basically a Forza clone including NFS itself now. And then they complain that every game is the same, like yeah goofballs you made it happen, when studios look at feedback they see you wanting those features so now take it.

The only racing game that has came out in recent years that actually has a soul and feels like it was made for car enthusiasts is granturismo 7. Yes gt7 is not without it's problems like the always online bulls*it but when u ignore that and look at the extremely accurate and beautifully detailed car models, the car list, the car sounds, PSVR, the track list, the physics model and the fact that literally every single car feels different and has characteristics that align with their real life counterpart etc. u get the sense that it was made for car enthusiasts instead of 12 year old forza kids who just want the latest and greatest supercar and a supra. I love the fact that gt7 doesn't follow the trend of only featuring the latest and greatest supercars/hypercars and completely ignoring automotive icons from the early 2000s, 2010s, the 80s and the 90s like the Murcielago LP640, McLaren SLR etc.

In my personal opinion, the Supercar Era of NFS as you call it, is the best one in NFS. Hot Pursuit, The Run, Most Wanted and Rivals are all exceptional games that received far too much unjustified hate for not being the exact same as before, even if every single on of those games is a million times better than games like Undercover and Underground 1.
I remember how in the early 2010's, people were crying and moaning about NFS needing to go back to its roots, because apparently the roots of NFS is Underground. The original games were fast cars going fast as their very basic principle, the 4 games of the Supercar Era are fast cars going fast and more. They're the perfect embodiment of what the original NFS games wanted to be.
But now, because all of the crying from people, that are basically manchildren, that just can't take their rose tinted glasses off and admit that Underground 2 and Most Wanted 2005 are deeply flawed games despite how good they may be, we get to have the weakest era of NFS, even if I do think the newer games do some things pretty good.
We do not need NFS to become Forza Horizon. Forza Horizon is already the best at doing Forza Horizon despite how some would prefer the earlier Horizon titles and some the newer ones. The Crew has tried for 11 years to be Forza Horizon and it has never quite got there, even if I do enjoy Motorfest quite a lot. Test Drive Solar Crown is already being tried to be sold by media as the Forza Horizon killer, but I can already tell you it won't reach that level, even if it may be a good game.
NFS needs to change once again. Perhaps the games can be in rotation, one is a Supercar type game, the next one is a Tuner type game and so on and so forth. I don't know, but they need to be their own thing. Trying to chase Forza Horizon and Most Wanted 2005 will not work at all. They should stop listening the loud people that cry every time because the game isn't a carbon copy of UG2 or MW'05, for no matter what they do, they will never be satisfied. Even if a perfect remaster is done, they'll find a way to bitch about it. They should make a good racing game, one that we don't have nowadays.

      That's entirely true.
These peoples which identify the Tuner Culture as a root for NFS games are totally misleaded.
NFS titles started with Sports Cars and Supercars.
Also, the main reason why the Black Box era is born is due to the success of NFS Hot Pursuit 2 PS2 which has a Cop VS Racer theme.
That also explains why NFS Hot Pursuit 2010/Remastered are very successful too.
Which means without NFS Hot Pursuit 2's success, none of the NFS from 2003 to 2008 as well as NFS titles w/ customization would've been born to begin with.
In fact, NFS High Stakes which is the 1st NFS with customization started it all.
Then, NFS Porsche Unleashed did the same and NFS Underground 1 improved on it.

HP2010 is the game that got me into racing games for the first time, I still remember playing it in 2nd grade on my Xbox 360 (in 2016 cuz I was late to the party lol). A year later or so I got Rivals, and then sometimes later I got my Xbox one (which I still have today) with FM7, The Crew, and NFS Payback, and I've been a fan of racing games ever since. Sometimes I feel that since I grew up with a NFS game that lacked customization, it's part of the reason why I'm able to respect cars just how they are, and I'm really not bothered if a racing game doesn't have 'good' customization. It's so weird that NFS these days is desperately trying to "redeem" itself to the people who hated the supercar era games, while in doing so the game quality and overall innovation just keeps going lower and lower. I know I'm almost definitely biased saying this, but it would really be nice to see a new iteration of the hot pursuit/supercar style NFS games, it would be a great refresher and a way to break the chain of copy-paste NFS games.
In a better world, perhaps we would have some sort of cycle of NFS styles, where, instead of NFS trying to be everything at once, the different styles would branch out and truly explore and innovate into their own ways, somewhat like how FH and FM used to alternate yearly. As cool of an idea that would be, it's (near) certain to never happen due to the current state of the AAA 100% ensh!tification guarantee. But it's still cool to think about such possibilities.

NFS's latest years have really cemented my opinion of the franchise as the clout chaser of racing games. It doesn't have its own identity anymore. It used to be just a way for you to drive some high-end cars you would not be able to drive otherwise. That's why I always had a soft spot for HP2010, because it went back to the *real* roots of the series (despite how hard some Underground/MW/Carbon fanboys want you to think these games are the actual roots, which they aren't - never were, never will be). And even though I don't like vehicular combat (or powerups in racing games in general, sorry Blur and other Mario Kart type games), I still had a blast playing it in multiplayer with a few friends. I have no idea why alot of people fight over what NFS should be.
I never played the 80's or 90's nfs but currently play TDU2 so I know having exotics without any visuals feels amazing but at the same time, I was fixated on WRC as a kid. A race where you see these ordinary looking cars, some had modified bodykits, plastered with decals and sponsorships.
When I had the opportunity to torture my PC that had no GPU (I think it only had like 80 or 200mb of VRAM) to run the first UG and MW 2005, I instantly went and placed all kinds of decals and sponsorships onto it like I was part of some illegal betting group. It was fun, although I always see dark lines covering the car due to how my graphics card is non existent.
NFS for me isn't just the tuners nor the exotics nor the police, it's just a game that you enjoy because you like it. In fact, I'm jealous most of the people here can run modern NFS because my laptops certainly can't. I can run UG2 and MW 05 now along with HP 2010 but I wanted to experience sticking some fancy sponsorship decals and cool racing liveries onto any BMW or lexus and call it my "GTE cars". I never had that opportunity and I would trade my damn soul if I could have a laptop that could upgrade itself to have the most modern specs imaginable so that I can just run newer racing titles.
I might not be considered a true fan of the NFS series because I don't have a side to choose but, NFS was my childhood, along with some other games like Colin Mcrae Rally, some obscure dakar rally game that I played on my mom's keypad nokia (forgot the name), and possibly more.
So yeah, even if the franchise gets stale, I'll still love it because it gave me a good past even if I won't have the power to play it.
Tbh, I never watched the vid because I can feel that he'll rant about how old nfs is good and why new nfs is bad or it's sticking to different things that made it harder to progress. I'll still give it a view later but for now, I wanted to calm down but I'll still leave a like because I ain't an asshole and I know you poured hours into this.

As a first: I can see why they needed to shift their focus to supercars and hypercars, as the focus of the tuning scene was already diminishing since Most Wanted 2005. They added Supercars and Hypercars in there as well, and in order to give the tuning more depth, they introduced autosculpt in Carbon, which was a good addition. Plus, the supercars era was a direction back to the roots to the oldest games in the series. I wouldn't say this in itself is controversial... it's the games, in particular one single game, that brought them into the downward spiral.
Hot Pursuit: It was an okay game. I wouldn't say it's a gem, I wouldn't say it's outstanding, but it certainly had its charm. I'm not too much of a fan of the Burnout drifting for real cars, but I can see past that. It also had lots of Supercars in it, just like Hot Pursuit 2 had. It's a legitimate continuation of Hot Pursuit.
The Run: Haven't played it too much, it was one of the first NFS which I skipped, but I'm interested to play it. The story honestly looks interesting.
Most Wanted 2012: Hot Pursuit, but worse in every way. It had nothing to do with the old Most Wanted except the Blacklist. Again, I can tolerate the drift model of the cars, but having literally no story, very little normal cars, no real progression system, searching for cars in the city instead of deserving the right to use them/buy them... Yeah, you can risk things, no problem. You're allowed to take risks. But in my opinion, EA/Criterion failed with each risk they took. If they would have called it anything else than Most Wanted, it could get more fans behind, but when you're competing against one of the most loved NFS parts, if you make a legitimate successor, then don't release such a hot mess where only the name reminds of the predecessor. And then the scenes where the police cars stack behind each other and build a giant wheel... No thanks. Dear devs, I don't know what you smoked, but don't smoke it anymore.
Rivals: Another "Meh" game. It's not a bad game at all, but it's not good.
IMHO, Most Wanted 2012 is one of the reasons why NFS is dying a slow death. That game was so fucked and such a disappointment, NFS would have needed to have absolute bangers afterwards to redeem themselves. However, not a single game was a banger. The last ones were probably Hot Pursuit and Shift. They really try to freshen up things with every game, and still they fail. The series has been on life support for 10 years, and it's not improving. As for my part... I'm not surprised in the slightest.

Need for Speed is supposed to mean blasting off in the slickest of supercars. The supercar posters from childhood with the plate ND4SPD evoked that emotion. The Modern Era has been so bad, that I've lost interest in the series.

  • @Crusher29
    @Crusher29 2 дня назад +1

The reason i hated all of these "supercar" era games wasn't because of the weapons or lack of customization like you mentioned (I grew up on HP2 and NFS2SE), it was because the core gameplay was basically Burnout but made bare bones, especially by Criterion. You are rewarded by high speed drifting with nitrous which makes you faster and so on. You were punished by even trying to drift without mastering it in Black Box or EA developed games and even then, it made you slower because that's how it was supposed to work.. It was not fun for me to whiz past a 90° turn doing 200kph, that was what Burnout was for. Making your driving model input lagged brake to drifting was the worst possible decision they could've made and i still consider games after Undercover (which still had decent potential) inferior to anything before it.
(crash cams, takedowns, just sprint races, virtually no progression).. also the airport was paid DLC mind you.

This video really sums up my personal issues with the NFS community. These games got so overhated for not being NFS MW 2005 basically. The sense of speed and graphics and car sounds of HP 2010 and the remaster are phenomenal. It's one of the few games that I've 100% completed. And the weapons give Hot Pursuit that extra kick to make the Cop Chases more entertaining and terrifying. Most Wanted 2012 had some of the most fun events and one of the most fun open world maps ever, but people don't like it because it has the name Most Wanted attached to it. At a certain point these complaints from NFS "Fans" have gotten so convoluted that they end up going back on themselves and it actively stops companies from doing something new. They hated the graffiti effects for being too cartoony yet a lot of people enjoyed NFS Nitro for its cartoony boxy style. They hated any references of LGBT people or politics in Unbound and Heat that built the background characters of the city and progressed the story and complained about wanting an escape from reality and yet the weapons of HP 2010 were too much for them. The music of NFS Heat and Unbound has been criticized even though they're purposefully crafted to fit the theme of the game and theme of the location just like the grunge metal and rap music of MW 2005 and the electronica of NFS Carbon. NFS has rarely ever strayed far from its formula (besides NFS Shift which was also fun but I digress) and yet somehow people still find a way to hate on anything outside of the black box or classic eras. It's genuinely disappointing.

People complained about the stories from Heat and Unbound and want an escape from reality but draw the line at weapons from both HP2010 and Rivals. People complained about the cartoon effects from Unbound yet they gave Nitro a pass. And the music from Heat and Unbound was definitely overhated for no reason at all. It was just curated to match the themes that they were going for at the time just like you said. And me personally I never really cared for the music anyways. I might not like them but it definitely didn’t “ruin” the game for me like most people whined about. I just turned the music off, got over it, and went on with my day. I agree with everything you said, but Most Wanted is an iconic name, and you can't just bait fans like this, which is what EA did with that game. I'm right; gameplay and multiiplyerwise, the game was ahead of its time, but using an iconic name instead of creating a new IP just seemed like a cheap way to sell the game. Sadly, it's a very EA thing to do. They did this with Battlefield Hardline, which was a great game, but they should have sold it as a separate IP, not with the battlefield name. BF games such as Millinery Shooters and Hardline were cops v robbers. Honestly, the game was innovative in game modes, and I very much enjoyed the beta, but I knew the game would die fast because no one asked for this. NFS started with supercars; the identity that the consumers see, especially its big fanbase, is "underground car culture with the cringy and semi-serious story," where customization and police play essential roles and competitive multiplayer. From the supercar era, HP and RIVALS were fun, but MW2012 failed because it tried to do something different with a name already taken. I enjoyed the video; how is your voice so great for narrative?

Even though my first NFS games were NFS-HP2 (2002) and MW 2005, I was a diehard fan of supercar era and the reason why I loved it so much because it was very simplistic compared to other eras. There was not so much to grind in the games which saved time and the ultimate and last thing that matters in racing games is 'Speed' which the supercars served the very purpose. Customisation doesnt change things, they are just for personal taste and only appeal to stand out among the crowd. Other reasons for liking the supercar era were realistic graphics, smooth handling and physics, vast open maps and broad roads, compeititive Ai cops and racers and lastly OST(I even listen to MW '12 and Rivals ost during leisure time).

Underrated? Yes. The problem i found with these games myself is that they become tiring very fast. Not that the modern games are not like that (except maybe heat and payback).
MW'12 biggest mistake was indeed its name. It was a fun game. I personally like that better than the rest of nfs of this era. And lacking customisation was not a big deal for me. But it felt weird to drive a random car parked on the side of the road, in a parking lot (parking lots should return). And also getting a random paint job, we shouldve had the freedom to choose the colour.
Rivals, got game but got boring really really really fast. F&f style vehicular weapons are not my thing. I only used those while i was a cop.
The Run i havent played it long enough to make an opinion. I dont even have it. I played on my friends pc.
Hot pursuit, i haven't played it at all.
At the moment, i would say unbound is getting good with updates like drag and drift. And next update is hp inspired..so looking forward to it.

The only man who would drift with supercars is Chris Harris. It just didnt fit with the cars. Its sad because otherwise the map, the soundtrack, the graphics, everything was spot on.

What I loved the most about the Supercar era was you didn’t modify the car at all. You got the color, *maybe* some cosmetic changes (The Run) but everyone was on level ground.
Ghost Era, all you need is no life outside of video games and you’ll min/max your way to an OP build no one can ever touch.
And on the topic of customization, I did like the upgrade/build your own car games, for a little while. Need for Speed Underground, 2, Carbon, Most Wanted ‘05. Those were fantastic.
Why? Because the sheer number of combinations you could throw together on your car to truly make it yours was unmatched, and due to the modern games and licensing, they never will be matched. In the Ghost Era of NFS, the *only* way to make your car YOURS, is to create a custom livery for it, and if you aren’t a good artist, that custom livery will suck on the one body kit the car has available for it, 4 spoilers, and tinted or rally-taped headlights.
Unless the car is a Japanese tuner of course, then it has 3 or 4 body kits.
In Underground 2, every single car had about 20 different body kits, a dozen headlights, dozen taillights, 30 or so spoilers, a dozen exhaust kits, 30 or so hoods, deeply customizable sound-systems in the back, neons, suspension kits, you didn’t even have to *try* and merely by picking whatever you liked, you had a car no like one else did (at the time, the cars built by the games NPCs) where now in the Ghost Era, everyones cars, again aside from livery, are exactly the same.

    • @HeroManNick132
      @HeroManNick132 2 дня назад +2

In NFS TR you could only ''customize'' every stock version of each car with an exception of the Audi RS4. And this game has many bodykits from previous NFS which were cut in the final.

My love for Rivals only grew stronger ever since Rivals+ mod got released
Hot Pursuit 2010 was a breath of fresh air for me since i get this feeling where I'm getting older & my love for riced up cars just died with it. While HP2010, The Run, MW2012 & Rivals didn't give players the option to customise their cars, at least i had fun with them.
HP2010's map design & its handling model are a match made in heaven, The Run's cinematic take is something I'll remember for the rest of my life, MW2012 while feeling lackluster - still gave me a blast from time to time, Rivals is my favourite among the 4 because i love how challenging, fun & action-packed it is.
I hated Rivals when it launched do to its endless amount of bugs & glitches but after many updates, i simply became my favourite. Especially when Rivals+ mod got released. It turns up what an already-good game to 11 and the smoothness of 60fps is the cherry on top.

My biggest issue with the second most wanted was that things just felt a little off in aesthetic. Car list? Great, wish I could just choose them at times then having to find them again in the environment but I can live with that. The entrances for some races were some of the most creative in the series history.
That and controller support was weird on PC. But otherwise, it was great and I mostly enjoyed this era of NFS.

Although I prefer the underground era (besides Payback and Unbound) of NFS for a number of reasons it's UNDENIABLE that the supercar era is classic need for speed at its core and deserves it's respect. A lot of need for speed "fans" and especially the influencer types like Blackpanthaa who just sort of grew up with the underground black box games act like they understand the franchise and what it was always meant to be.
I love the simple idea of jumping in a car if your choice that's fast and running from the cops while racing through scenic locations, Hot Pursuit 2 being my favorite of the games that did it with the 2010 version under it.
Although i prefer being able to customize my individual cars, the car types, overall vibe, the cheesy but fun campaigns, and prefer the urban locations of Underground, Most Wanted, And especially Carbon being my favorite of those games. It doesn't mean Need For Speed can't have multiple identities for all types of audiences like the street legal era being Pro Street and the Shift games for example. Need For Speed wouldn't be as iconic if it didn't have these types of games in the first place.

end of the day, most nfs fans are indeed from the black box era REGARDLESS of if it was a supercar focused game prior to. Thats what brought in the most money and when fans of that style of game receive a game that doesn't fit in with that formula, its a hit or miss. It would be no different than MK or SF turning from a 2d fighting game into a 3d arena. It would be NICE to see, but it wouldnt be exactly a warm welcome to everybody off the fact its going off the most popular formula it had, if it isnt broke dont fix it

What they were actualy was "Burnout: Need For Speed remakes old_tile_in_here" and fans of series were not happy at all because of this and what's worse, when you want try out to play old good 2005 Most Wanted, you can't buy it today, so you search for it and all you get is 2012 burnout like... who would not be mad at that? I'm not saying those games were bad, but they were not only different from what we would call "core" of NFS, but they were also so similar to Burnout: Paradise City that evere one who played Burnout before had a more familiar feeling playing "new" NFS rather then to the previous NFS titles
