- Eating sweets in moderation isn't harmful, but avoid all artificial sweeteners. Dr. Weil discusses what to choose in lieu of processed foods and diet drinks that have sugar substitutes and add marginal, if any, healthful benefits.
When I crave sweets I will eat a few dates. They taste indulgent! I sometimes pair it with some dark chocolate. I also grow and make my own stevia and it is so much different than the commercial stuff. I dry and powder it and so it has the leaf material with it. Thanks, Doc!
Merry Christmas, Dr. And thank you!
Agave? I am surprised with this one as the fructose content and glycemic load is worse than that of high fructose corn syrup.
I'm afraid Dr Weil has not evolved at all. If you want the best nutrition advise ever check out Dr Eric Berg. He only has 12 million followers compared to Weil's few hundred thousand
😬
So am I!
Thank you, Dr. Weil ✌🏼
What about peanut butter (just ground peanuts)?
I had been taught that craving sweets means you're deficient in protein; chocolate, magnesium.
I eat a lot of raw fruit, especially as a snack, and I have just been diagnosed as prediabetic. For years I have avoided sugar, other than in raw fruit, and eat few saturated fats, no junk food, no sugary drinks (including fruit juice), very little alcohl. So it’s a struggle to think where my extra weight (10 kilos over healthy BMI) and expanded waistline came from, other than from fruit.
if you avoid saturated fats, gives the impression you may have a high intake of refined seed oils along with carbohydrates. perhaps this is the culprit causing your metabolic issues. maybe a more keto leaning diet would help you.
“First, there is fruit.”
No, there is only fruit. 🍉 🍌
true
Fruit will make you fat and raise your blood sugar. For years I was a big fruit advocate and it was my only real source of sugar. I’m not one of these keto dieters. Far from it. But my blood sugar level now puts me in the prediabetic range.
@@claymor8241 How much were you eating? Most medical authorities recommend two servings a day.

tart flavors help offset sweet cravings. i like hibiscus tea or unsweetened cranberry juice.
😖😄
A little Stevia mixed into Xylitol or Erythritol to make them taste sweeter and lower the cost is excellent or by themselves . A little disappointed these two were not mentioned.
Erythritol has been found to be bad for your heart😢
I disagree that chocolate is good for you or a good source of magnesium, but most people think that so I can overlook it, but I've always known agave to spike blood sugar. So that seems weird to me.
Aspartame was developed AS a neurotoxin that they discovered is sweet. And it breaks down into phenylalanine, which most of us can process unless you have PKU. But after knowing someone with PKU and that getting more phenylalanine than they can process induces neurological problems I think they're just canaries, and too much does the same to the rest of us just at higher doses. I also find high proline will induce depression, even vegan sources, like a big bowl of black beans.
I like cranberry sauce as a condiment but making sure its free from hfcs is key. But cranberries help clear out sugar loving pathogens. Pair those types of foods up with your sweets.
And try to always have fiber with your sugar.
I wonder about Allulose?
Especially when paired with monkfruit sweetener, allulose tastes great without the aftertaste of stevia (unless you grow stevia yourself?). Much better for people than erythritol which is not heart healthy. The only drawback I have discovered about allulose after researching it, is that when consumed in too large of an amount, it can cause digestive distress. I recommend the Lakanto brand.
@ actually just heard about this combination at a dinner party last night, will check it out! Thank you!

Does chocolate have heavy metals?
I'm afraid of what they'll find out about artificial sweeteners down the road so if I want something sweet I will use a little raw sugar or honey (it has antibacterial properties) not bad for your mouth but make sure you rinse with water after you eat 😊
He's just guessing and hasnt read the research. He's cute and been around a long time. Nice guy.
You got it right, Dr. Weil. Fruit is first; stevia is second; and sugar in moderate amounts is third. 👍👍👍
Check out monkfruit sweetener! It doesn't have an aftertaste like stevia. The best ones have allulose instead of erythritol added. Erythritol is not great for the heart. The Lakanto brand has allulose and tastes great. I just found out about it. I have appreciated Dr. Weil's advice for many years. Wondering if he has heard about monkfruit yet...
@@brad8386 Thanks for the tip on monkfruit sweetener. 👍
No! Xylitol and Erythritol with a little Stevia is best. Do your research
@@Anita-ji5hr Xylitol has possible side effects for humans, and make SURE to keep it away from dogs! It is highly toxic to them. If they do consume even a small amount they must be rushed to the vet before they die.
I drink a lot of artificial sweeteners in my Diet Snapple Tea, but it doesn't cause me to have any sweet cravings. I just prefer not drinking plain water. Mineral Water would be Ok, but it's not free.
My hearing is not so good. P.ease consider closed captioning.
But chocolate is high on oxalate!
It also has heavy metals :(
What is Swerve?
Olives help
ALLULOSE ??
A Snickers bar?
You've lost another of weight look great.I make homemade hot chocolate with a few drops of Stevie and unsweetened almond milk. I use organic chocolate.
When you crave sweets just eat more sugar
Lol, diabetes be damned! ;)
I eat fage Greek yogurt with some honey and unsweetened cacao nibs idk if it’s good but seems better than cookies or candies who knows don’t trust me I have issues w food
Palm sugar?
Memo: stevia might have health benefits
no
Dr. Weil is a highly educated man.
You obviously didn’t listen well. He said that ❤
@@nancymacavoy3427 i took a note u fool thats what memo means
Dates!!!!!!
No sugar alcohol
cool
Agave isn’t considered better. Saccharin being dangerous has been debunked. I know this is old. 😢
'First of all, there's fruit'. And fruit = sugar. End of story.
Agave 🤣 sugar is sugar
Lower glycimic load also rice bran syrup
Nope. Hfcs isn’t processed by your body the same as cane sugar.
Memo: honey doesnt supply health benefits
Honey is worse for ur teeth them sugar
He said honey is used for 'medicinal benefits', (topically) because he was rubbing his hand, not eating it, so I think that's what he means.
@@karynkohler8342 Monukka variety is sold as a topical it's antibiotic and promotes healing. Soothes burns too. Honey does not spoil. One interesting thing I saw is ants went right past open sugar bowl and found a jar that had been rinsed a film of honey residue at the top of the lid jar was closed and ants went around and around the top of the jar. Something in that honey made them crazy.
