Whenever I speak about what I'm wearing after I get a complement, I try to encourage men to care about their style. I explain to them what I do and how I do it (thrift stores, learning, having fun). I help them along the way if they reciprocate. I also make it a habit of mine to always learn the history of a piece of clothing before I buy it as well. Like a peakycap or leather jacket. It's a learning curve, and that's what I'm proud of.

Yes on etiquette! Yes on manners! I'm British, so the whole "gentleman" thing is fairly engrained in our culture, and I find it endlessly fascinating how so many people approach it like putting on a costume- I'm dressed as gentleman today, hypebeast tomorrow. My “why” is simple: I want to be a good example for my children. Every father wants to look at his kids and say they’re exceptional, but I know that mine can outshine me by a light year someday as long as they have a solid base; I wake up every day and go to work to build that base for them. No other reasons necessary.

  • @butters6295
    @butters6295 3 года назад +75

Here is my "why" - Since middle school, I was bullied every day. Then, I wore soccer clothes and went into an "emo" dressing phase. One day, I noticed that the way I dressed made friends, family, and teachers view me as something I was not. From that day (12 years ago), I have dressed nice. The results have paid off more than anything else in my life. Getting jobs is easier, no negative first judgments, and promotions happen quickly. (As a sidebar, I was promoted from a job after being there less than a month, over people there more than a year, because I "looked the part" and was "well dressed enough to put in front of parents.") Now, I am in law school, have worked for a state supreme court justice, and meeting big law lawyers for possible jobs. Currently, I am getting into shoes for the first time, and get complements on my Allen Edmonds Hamilton boots when I run into meetings.
My style has improved, but I am still learning.

I love what you said about etiquette. My grandmother sat me at the table when I was 8, at a formal dinner setting and showed me how proper etiquette. She told me, proper etiquette is a moral obligation. To do unto others, as you would have them do unto you. Manners and respect will carry you through the world. Great advice!
I like to dress well for work, even though many people dress business casual, most of my colleagues do not make an effort to dress well.
It communicates that I am serious about my job. Being detail-oriented is an important function of my profession, and I like projecting that with my attire.
I dress well for church. It communicates to ME, that this is important. God deserves my best. It puts me in the right frame of mind for the service.
I dress up for dates with my wife. I like to plan occasions where we dress up. It affords us the opportunity to see each other at our best. It communicates to her, that she is my most important person. Why should my boss get my best, and she get less? I spend my work days with him. I am spending my LIFE with HER!

The deadly sins in my closet are short-sleeved T-shirts and sweat pants. That's my "uniform." Not much of a uniform you say? Probably. But I'm 75, I live in a senior's residence, and my health isn't great (meaning I spend quite a bit of time resting). So my uniform reflects my needs.
But I also have this delightful, interchangeable wardrobe. Shirts, slacks, and jacket. It's in my closet, waiting for me to pull it out. Maybe, . . . tomorrow. Maybe when I get clear about the "why" for this stage of my life.

My why, is that I'm a 30 year old man who has been trying to buy his first house for close to 7 years, I'm trying to start my own business and I feel it's time to approach with a more refined angle and try to move forward in life.

Great work, Antonio. Decades of dressing how the government told me to dress left me nearly clueless after losing about 70 pounds. I was then thinking "what now?" Although I still wear the uniform at my day job, I took the time to educate myself on how to dress well for me. No looking back!

It’s funny you mention uniforms. I worked as a carpenter helper for a large org when I was young. We didn’t have uniforms. One of the guys I was assigned to work with did a lot of what we call side work. He always looked neater than the other guys in the shop. He told it was because when he would go to someone’s house to give them an estimated he had realized that by having neat clean work pants a pressed work shirt and here was the big one, work boots that were broken in but clean. He said it gave people confidence that he was professional and knew what he was doing. He had a trick that he would do. Before he went into someone’s house he made a show of wiping his feet on the mat. It sends a message.
A lot of the guys laughed at him behind his back but he didn’t care. Because he was doing all the work he could handle.

You made a comment that had me say out loud, "Thank you!" Style is on my mind every time I put on clothes. But, I am not a lawyer, or a professional businessman. I "manage" a small casino. But the primary source of my income comes from tips. I rarely receive them. After talking to many of the regulars I'm told its the way I dress and carry myself. They tend to believe I'm the owner and therefore don't need their charity. This has plagued me since I was a child. We shopped at thrift stores. But I always put together timeless style, ironed my clothes, ensured proper fit, color-coordinated. Simply put, I never looked sloppy. As a result they always thought I was rich when in fact I was poor. They always viewed my as a leader although I constantly combat anxiety. I've even lost relationships over the impression that the women were somehow lesser than me because of my structure. They needed me to be sloppy, make mistakes and be irrational sometimes. But even my sloppy is calculated. These concepts of style don't fit The Plumber, The Blue Collar Guy. I know this isn't the channel for it, but I need help being The Everyday / Every-man's guy.

The thrift store tip is a great one. You go to a thrift store in a high income area and you will find some great pants and shirts and even suits or sport coats. I have picked up so many good pieces from my goodwill for $6-$10 per article of clothing.

The apathy is what my wife hears about all the time from her friends. They complain that their husbands can't be bothered to put any effort into their attire, even on date night. Not every occasion calls for a GQ level outfit but these guys are wearing cargo shorts, dad shoes and beer brand t-shirts to restaurants where a savvy man would wear a sport coat. She's said that her friends and co-workers are genuinely embarrassed sometimes to be all dolled up on a date but the hubby looks like he's ready for a tailgate party. Don't be that guy.

I wore a suit jacket and tie to a recent zoom interview and was complimented by the hiring manager about how professional I looked. Now I'm looking forward to overhauling my wardrobe to dress with the end goal in mind.

"How you do anything, is how you do everything." - This may not apply 100%, but generally, if someone is slacking in one department (IE style) or "half-asses" it in one area, they're going to half-ass in everywhere else.
