Thanks! I recently made the top team for my age group, the coach and other players would be using these kinds of numbers to describe positions on the field and I would be very confused on what they are talking about. So thanks for helping me understand what my coach and teammates are talking about :)
Number ten has always been a very versatile role: Pelé, Maradona, Platini, Zidane. Playmakers who could score tons of goals as well as leading a counter attack from their own box.
Trying to learn more about soccer and getting ready to play the new Captain Tsubasa game for Ps4! And this video helped explaining the positions and numbers!
Funny to associate it as fixed roles but I always considered as below. It helps to associate strategies and player styles but not mandatory to be in real life game. 1 GK 2 DR / MR 3-4 = CB 5 Defensive mid central, can be the cb according to team formation 6 DL / ML 8 mid central; helps both in defense and attacking, the one called box-to-box. 7 winger position, no matter the left or right side. The one that will run to cross the balls. In a 4-4-2 formation he'll be the MR or ML 9 the attack whatever style is. 10 Usually the most offensive midfielder, playmaker, dribbling, the maestro. 11 can be winger, or second striker based on the team formation.
Back in the days, we used to associate numbers with the position not with roles: For example, Pirlo is number 6, Messi is number 7, Zidane is number 10, Modric is number 8 and Ronaldinho is number 11. But guess what? All of these players have a rôle of a playmaker. Pirlo is deep lying playmaker or regista. Xavi is a playmaker (in his debut, he was number 6 a regista like pirlo). Zidane is an advanced playmaker. Messi and Ronaldinho are wide playmakers. With that being said : 6 can contain various roles according to the tactics in place, like defensive midfielder or ball winning midfielder or deep lying playmaker 8 also can contain a Box to Box midfielder or a protector midfielder or playmaker 10 can be an advanced playmaker/trequartista like Zidane and Ozil or a support striker/Raumdeuter (nowadays called 9.5 sometimes) like Benzema and Henry or an advanded playmaker/Mezzala like De Bruyne and Kaka. 11 contain wide playmaker or attacking wingers or wide midfielders
True, it is one of the most balanced formations. For a flat 4-4-2, both your central midfielders will need to be #8. Otherwise, a diamond 4-4-2 needs to be deployed with a #6 and #8.
Brilliant video thanks, am trying to understand positions better because I always play lw and I don't know any other position or how to play those positions
Excellent video - each roll explained really well , all makes for a better understanding when watching football on TV . Q: can you explain the 'false 9 role' in detail and give examples of players who you think do that roll really well ?
Great video lad. Great explanation for every role, i just wanted to say for good explanation for the number 10 could be wesley sneijder! as he almost won the balon dor
The numbering system made logical sense in the old 2-3-5 formation BBBBUUUTTT!!!!!!!: The wrongly called number 6 is actually a number 5 - if we have 2 on the right and 3 on the left: there was always numbers 4 on the right and 6 on the left, with a 5 in the middle playing upper or lower throughout the match. And also up ahead there're the 7 on the right, 9 in the middle and 11 on the left - so an 8 on the right and an 10 on the left. It's understood that they move! For example Xavi changed in every season, during a certain match, and in relation to Guardiola, Iniesta or Messi just to name a few - but a center center stays a center center and so a 5! If not for other - especially because they all move in every means!
Excellent explanation. First time I understood the numbers and what they do. Yes indeed, Messi is a no. 10. The best players are no, 10, so of course, that's what he was. He was also used as a false 9. Now he's no. 30 in PSG. What's that? Pls cut out the music, it interferes with the excellent commentary.
No.7s and number 11s have become inside forwards rather than wingers. Number. 10s have dropped deeper into 3 man midfield and almost play like another 8 ie like Modric.
., the GK has many roles like helping building the attack from the back as first line of attack and he his leading and organizing the defence and the walls because of his vantage point like a coach on the field , and he is the first line of attack ( to distribute the ball )
Sir, did you watch another video and comment on this one by mistake? The exact sentence mentioned in the video is "The #1 player's role is to mainly be a goalkeeper. There is no alternate role." The purpose of this video is to explain the "primary" function of each role. So, I would recommend watching the video again and editing your comment. @@Soccerspective ok sorry nice diplomas but you forgot to detail the other roles of a GK after his main role on this particular video and only watched this one. the first name of ''football '' in england was ''socker'' and then Association football-rugby then association football..then football... the americans are right to call it soccer because in the 18th century in England it was called socker like in socks
Liam read the rest herewww.britannica.com/story/why-do-some-people-call-football-soccer Inevitably, the names would be shortened. Linguistically creative students at the University of Oxford in the 1880s distinguished between the sports of “rugger” (rugby football) and “assoccer” (association football). However, “soccer” never became much more than a nickname in Great Britain. Numbers 1 to 11 are the main roles in a football team. They make up the start 11 . The others from 12 and above have no tactical use they are just use for identification of players. When the players on the bench are substituted into a game they take the role of one of the numbers already on the field. Note: the numbers on the players jersey don't determine their playing or tactical positions, hence a player wear number 23 can playing in any of the starting roles. Central defensive midfielder or central midfielder. I would suggest u not to play on either sides bcz lack of pace would hurt u. Central backs shoudp be a little tall and strong to cope up with aerial duels and stop the attackers.
After the role of the Sweeper was pioneered by Franz Beckenbauer and Gaetano Scirea, the most recent examples that come to mind are Lucio at Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. Another example is Traianos Dellas with the Greece National team. Unfortunately, the new norm is the Sweeper Keeper. With goalkeepers like Manuel Neuer playing as the sweeper, this position has almost become non-existent.
That's awesome!! Something that I 've noticed the #6 of Brazil are always left backs, the #5 are always defending midfielders and #3 and #4 centre backs. Could you explain me that??
Different countries apply different numbers. Most of south American countries replace number 6 with number 5. In Argentina central defenders are 2&6 (Ayala/Samuel). Left back is 3 and right back is 4. In England, central backs are 5&6 while central midfielders are 4&8 In Netherlands the defence line is numbered from right to left. RB is 2 CBs are 3&4, LB is 5. Dude i have a doubt in double pivot of a 4 2 3 1 formation you have two holding midfielders one on the left half space and the other on right half space. And in the double pivot if the left sided midfielder is a box to box number 8 and the right sided midfielder is the number 6 defensive midfielder, then when your team is playing through the left side you have your box to box midfielder to take part in the attack and progress the ball but when your team is playing through the right side your team doesn't have a box to box midfielder on the right side instead you only have a number 6.
