Long gone are the days when 25.5 inch (full scale) dreadnaughts were the only option for acoustic guitars. More and more people are thinking about playing comfort. Perhaps you are someone of smaller stature, or perhaps you have muscular issues that make it difficult for you to extend your fretting hand, or right hand the distance they would need to travel on a full sized guitar. We're seeing more and more players, both young and old switching to smaller body instruments for these reasons. Some styles of music (such as blues) can be easier on short scale instruments as well, because of ease when bending strings. The shorter the scale length, the easier it will be to bend a string.
In addition, pickup systems have truly come a long way in the past 20 years as well, so by the time you get plugged in, it's amazing how huge a small bodied, or short scale guitar can sound.
