      TheTopher Chris I vote no. It’s too low torque of an engine, I don’t know that you’d be able to enjoy it as much if you did that.
      I think it’s almost perfect for that, but not quite. Do that to a 350z or something man!

    There was a time when 98% of us were driving rear wheel drive vehicles in winter and we managed to generally get where we were going. Modern snow tires make it so much easier.

    • @chosenideahandle
      @chosenideahandle 4 года назад +6

      Right Lane Hog yes, we did manage somehow! I’ve only ever driven rear wheel cars year round in Canada. To tout sport cars as doing fine with any winter tires, is a little bit of a stretch (what this guy is saying). The BRZ has almost perfect weight distribution, and it makes all the difference. Vettes, Stangs and Camaros have always been horrible (the mid engine Vette would probably be ok with more clearance). My Mustang was a joke without loading the trunk. I’m in a 92’ MB SL now I try to keep out of bad weather.

    • @rightlanehog3151
      @rightlanehog3151 4 года назад

      @@chosenideahandle With my chosen name it won't surprise you to learn that I have never owned a sports car but I certainly agree that there are massive differences in weight distribution and natural grip among RWD cars. Carrying sand bags and a small shovel in the trunk is never a bad idea. The better the winter tire the better the outcome holds true for any type of vehicle. Lastly, I remember when we only put snow tires on the drive (back) wheels so thank goodness people finally figured out the need for them on all four corners.

      @Dylantuning1995 4 года назад +22

      @@cedie I disagree. Seeming that he has the car for 6 years already he knows how it drives, in snow too! He's Driving on snow tires, he can manage to safely stop in time, watch traffic, has enough distance to the driver in front of him and when he enters the roadway he limits the amount of ''drift'' so that he won't end up in the other lane. He only really gets on the gas when he's the only one on the road and no one near him.
      If this was mid city with massive amounts of traffic, then yes he would be going too fast. But in these conditions, he has full control.

    Anti-“consumorous driving” Love it. Wish more people would treat like it.
    I have a FWD lowered hatch on eibach springs. No diff and tiny clearance is a tough combination. This year in Ukraine we had literally meters of snow. I was still going everyday. Shovel and planks in a trunk, 30 min more in the morning and you’re good to go. Requires bravery and skill, but it’s fun in some ways))
    I would still pick the best possible winter tyre not minding about dry and wet performance. Blizzak, ContiViking, Hakkapelita. Summer tires still will be better on hard surfaces even in -5 (Celsius ) . So having that on separate rims,you’re free to change it whenever needed reducing time driving on winters “just in case”

    In the 1970s unless you had a Beetle or 4 wheel drive truck, you had rear wheel drive. Most bought 2 snow tires, especially because the summer tires had very little traction even in rain. Walmart sells plastic traction mats for the ground, and long zip ties that go around the drive tires. I had hours of fun practicing sliding sideways in empty parking lots with a 1969 Chevy Impala with a 327 smallblock V8. See the April issue of Consumer Reports magazine at a library for winter tire ratings- I like Pirelli tires for how quiet they ride and how long they last, with good traction.

    Lots of snow is always fun, crazy how much more understeer ive noticed in the rwd compared to what im used too (awd turbo) but its nice to see how well it kicks out to balance out, the awd is fun cause it gets rid of a lot of that understeer + gives u a little more momentum and speed coming into corners but can definitely cause a little more trouble coming out if u dont know how fast to take it/blind corners, but open roads/side streets it feels like a rwd, love the winter so much for driving haha

    BRZ/FRS/86 with Rally gravel set up would be ideal👍
    I have a question for you...and I think your opinion is most relevant given what I know about you from your videos. I’ve owned my FRS since new (2013). I have modified it appropriately as items have worn (suspension,clutch, and brakes) and I truly love the car, I really do. I’m considering buying a new car though, the FRS is getting close to 100k very hard miles and, short of putting a cage in it, I’m considering something new. While I can afford up to $100k, I just cannot bring myself to spend that much, especially since I like to thrash cars. I basically want something as raw to drive as possible, it has to be RWD, say under $50k. What would you buy?
    I have access to my wife’s 2019 Type R so I want something different and again, RWD. Is it really just down to Miata (although I’m not crazy about soft tops) or BRZ/86? Should I just get another of these things? Wear it out?😂😂

    • @TheTopher
      @TheTopher  4 года назад +7

      I think about this all the time lol. The 86/BRZ is honestly one of the last pure raw driver’s cars on the market, and I’ve often thought that if I had to replace it, I’d just get another newer one.
      My favorite thing about it has always been that I don’t feel like I have to baby it. I think there’s a freedom and enjoyment there that may be absent in more expensive cars. You already have a Type R, that’d be my next suggestion. But beyond looking at another new 86 or BRZ (the performance package cars are the sweet spot imo) next on my list would be a Challenger Scatpack Widebody. Different beasts, but I love that thing. They’re awesome on the track and make for really entertaining daily drivers. They can take a beating too. It drives like a big Miata. Alternatively, the Alfa Romeo 4C is about as raw as it gets, but unfortunately witout a manual. The manual steering makes up for it though... Alfa is rolling out a CPO program too.
      I don’t know why I’m not more excited about the new Miata. If I wanted another one I’d just get a PRHT NC2 and set it up as a big grip car for half the cost of a new ND. The Camaro ZL1 is a good option too, but haven’t driven any of the new ones except for an SS, and I vastly prefer the challenger. The new Mustang is numb, the GT350 is good, but Is probably a ticking time bomb if you drive it hard. Honestly it’s either 86 or 911 GT3 lol.

    • @robertrishel3685
      @robertrishel3685 4 года назад +6

      TheTopher my thoughts exactly..like literally, which is strange 🤯. The fact that they (BRZ/86’s) aren’t so precious genuinely is liberating. I fear if I went ahead and bought a 911 or even a Cayman, I’d be too concerned about its condition to enjoy thrashing it. Thanks for preaching to the choir😂

      If you want something fun, rwd, and under $50k, go for a 370z or G37 coupe. Those things are awesome. It’s like driving an frs with more power. Coming from an frs myself my G was probably one of the best if not the best car ive owned

    • @robertrishel3685
      @robertrishel3685 4 года назад

      Ivan Frizky I really like the new M2 Competition, I do. But again, that’s a $60k + car....I’d be reluctant to thrash it. And I love to abuse my FRS, it’s a car that is inexpensive to hammer on. Possibly I could find a lightly used M2.... I raced motorcycles for many years, but gave them up due to injuries, so my car is basically a motorcycle replacement for me. It doesn’t have to be practical, it just has to be engaging to drive. What I really want is an aircooled 911, but here again...they have been priced to ridiculous levels.... you just couldn’t dare beat on one day after day anymore.... I suppose they have been under valued, and they deserve to be more expensive, I just wish I would have bought one before their values got stupid!

  • @177SCmaro

    Lightweight, low ground clearance, rwd car is about the worse combination for snow but she did a good job of it. You wanna see a car that did awful in the snow look at cars like my second gen Camaro (which I don't drive on the street anymore, it's a race car). Not as light but most of the weight is on that long nose, low ground clearance, rwd peg leg (at the time), no traction control or even abs, all that car wants to do is for the rear end to join the front end in the snow and ice.

I say almost cause it's pretty slow to start moving when going from a complete stop when there's snow (like in your video), but as soon as it gained speed everything is good.
    That and i got stuck in my driveway the orher day (🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️) but we had like 30cm of snow that day and i was out having some fun with the car whe the storm started so it was already packed with snow when i parked it so i guess that one dosen't count ahhah

    Just drove in snow today on Blizzaks. I drove with both traction on and then traction (and stability control?) off, and it is so much better with it off. When it's on.. I find that the car will keep sliding left and right as the TC kicks in, so it felt unsafe. With it off, you might slide one way but it's much more controllable. It kinda sucks from a stop with TC off, but once you get going, there's a bunch of grip. Ground clearance is my only issue (at stock height).
