Massive 15-Foot, Cattle-Eating Alligator Killed In Florida - Newsy

  • Transcript:
This cattle-eating alligator was way too big for this small Florida town. About 15 feet too big, to be exact.
The massive gator was caught and killed at a farm in Okeechobee, Florida - a town of 5,500 people.
Professional hunter Lee Lightsey told the BBC: "Although this animal is huge, I was not that surprised it existed. ... But what really drew our attention to this animal was the fact that it seems to have been feasting on the cattle on my farm."
Lightsey said when he and his hunting guide saw the alligator surface from the cattle pond, they shot it. They needed a tractor to move the nearly 800-pound gator from the pond.
Lightsey said he noticed mutilated animal body parts in the water.
And, as Newsy's partners at WPTV report, this could be a Florida record.
"The state record for the longest alligator is 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation committee. I don't know. Maybe that could be the biggest one ever found," WPTV's Mike Trim said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the alligator is real but has yet to confirm the official size.

That’s what I’m thinking. Gatorland took in a 13 footer that was 1,000 lbs, so to be only 800 lbs and longer seems odd. The 13 footer used to eat dogs, so I’d think a cow eater would be heavier. But someone suggested maybe cow steroids had an effect, so it could’ve quickly spurted in length before its weight caught up, assuming the length was verified

They always say they max out in size at about 14, even 15 feet, but I know, for a fact because I saw it with my own eyes and happened to have a “witness” with me because I just couldn’t believe my eyes! It was easily 15+ft. EASILY! I’d say 16ft, but it’s not like I was able to use a tape measure & I don’t want to exaggerate. So, there have got to be some big huge Mac-daddy gators in Lake Okeechobee and in all of the springs in the central Florida area. They’ve just gotten so smart with their older age & maturity that they stay well hidden & avoid getting caught by humans. I bet there are Florida Alligators that almost touch 18 ft!! I just know they MUST be huge gators in those waters somewhere! ✌️

+Mitchell Staley im suggesting that the suggestion of keeping a 16 foot alligator in captivity is absolute nonsense. This animal had to have been several decades old, and was an apex predator in its environment. Taking this animal and trying to contain it while keeping it at a humane level of comfort would have been a larger monetary and social drain than the profits from tourism would have allowed. Add this to the fact that "I can, therefor I should" isn't necessarily true in this scenario it becomes an even more grey area. Relocation would have been the best option, but even then with a predator of this size you risk unbalancing whatever ecosystem you put it into. Tough situation without a really easy answer, but "hey let's kill that sumbitch" and "I betcha I coulda done made a fortune hyuck" aren't the only two options.

+6.5/10 - IGN what do you know about alligator keeping. You are obviously a gamer. The hobby of gaming and animal research are not mutually exclusive but almost never together.
