I forgot to mention we already got realistic space audio working in game... that's a space joke.
your space engineers ships look amezing!
;p
Sorry, I can't hear you...
You captured the in space sound perfectly ;)
In space, no one hears you laugh.
Can’t wait to hear literally nothing in your game^^
Jokes aside, I believe Elite Dangerous would be a great reference for ‘space sound’ design!
That already look a lot like The Expanse. I love this more or less realistic physics approach.
Remember the Cant!!!!
but for real I this is looking like a very interesting game!
This game looks very similar to StarBase. Hopefully it actually makes it out alive
This is the exact fusion of The Expanse and Escape Velocity I didn’t know I wanted.
Why would you need something like that? Better get yourself Children of a Dead Earth.
I’m not sure how popular these Devlogs are going to be but I greatly appreciate you making them. This is thoroughly fascinating and might someday encourage me to try game dev for myself.
Mate even if you don’t make a game, just messing around with what you can do in a game engine is beyond fun and I greatly encourage anyone reading this comment to try and mess around with any game engine of choice.
Love it when Rich chimes in and gives his perspective on development, it adds so much..
Amazing work bro. Looks like you're having fun and thats what its ALL about. Keep shining 🙏
Hey this is great progress! Excited to see more!
Dude this is insanely sick!
Absolutely love the ship designs it's almost like homeworld meets the expanse!
I love seeing this stuff... it's important to implement a feature, a thing so it does what your'e asking... and THEN when it's time you tweak the details the smaller dynamics of physics etc.
Many devs get bogged down on making things exactly as they're supposed to feel like straight away, and then they do not get the functional parts in check :)
It's great to see all these dev blogs on YT and see how weird and funny things are during development, and it's absolutely fine! Tweaking comes after :)
getting flashbacks to the levelcap vlogs from almost a decade ago, I like it
your demeanor alone just shows that a passion project is a life calling. it wont be you magnum opus, but a stepping stone to reach it. please dont stop.
I’m watching you since the bf3 days and it‘s cool to see you do your own game now. If you decide to pursue it further I’ll be playing it for sure!
THAT LOOKS SO SICK
Man this is some nice work in a very short time! Extremely looking forward to what you are doing!
I have to say, as someone who's never really been into this style of game, this actually looks pretty cool, especially after such a short dev time and small dev team! Please keep up this Devlog series for the rest of development, it's very enjoyable and interesting, plus as a long-time Blender person is always brings me joy to see it being used on projects.
The Expanse could really use a ship combat game and i think this could be it. Really like how the ship looks!
i've sworn off preordering games...but in this case, I will make an exception. Stoked to follow you on this journey, Level
Yea mate the expanse theme of this is partly wat keeps me interested!!! and its a pretty wicked effort tbh so keep at it mate!!
Been in gamedev for a decade. The beginning is the most exciting and "easiest" part with the most returns. Just wait till you find out the true complexities of what you have built and how to grapple with them. Then the bug fixing, the optimizations, the bug fixing. Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions, I've built systems like this before.
"want to figure out gameplay before more ship design"..
Uhum, CIG.. You listening?? 😅
Looks great LC! Watching with keen interest
Amazing! I've been following you since the early bf3 days, and I must say I am so happy for you that you're chasing your dream, looking forward to being able to play what is looking like an amazing project!! CONGRATS.
I love that ur starting a UE project, as a UE LD, i like to start my projects with designing the core gameplay loop and a general idea of the game, it helps to not having to scrap progress later on, really cool project btw, much love to you levelcap :)

For a space missile, it is likely that there will be no nose cone, and even that the missile will be "square" to optimise space in the launch tubes, but also costs of productions since we have no aerodynamics in the void.
What's more, it would give your game a different style ;)
NB: Do as you want, it's not an issue, just an idea by a random on YT, no worry.
This is shaping up nicely, it already has some features you look for in an engaging game
I'm so excited for this step in your career 🙌 I hope this game scratches your itch because that's the best part about game dev
i get such Expanse vibes from this.. Can't wait for your game LC
remember the cant!
This is awesome, and I love the progress walk-through.
This reminds me of Delta-V: Rings of Saturn, which is a very strictly hard-scifi sort of game, but I would love to see a 3D game go in the direction of The Expanse in terms of navigation and such. Love this.
Have you tried Children of a Dead Earth?
@@getsideways7257 Welp, I haven't, but this looks right up my alley. Thanks for the suggestion!!!
I'm so excited about this project! See Dice, destruction IS fun! 😂
"I wanna make sure the basics are functioning before I get really get into ship design" so, the complete opposite of Star Citizen's approach? Smart move!
I know it's probably still early to be concerned about these cosmetic aspects, but the exhausts of the attitude control thrusters in space wouldn't look like a tight beam as they does in this devlog. They would expand very wide. This is because there is no atmospheric pressure in space, thus exhaust gases would expand massively.
You can observe this phenomenon if you watch a space rocket launch. Immediately upon liftoff the exhausts will be almost identical to width of the engine nozzles (because first stage engines are optimized to operate in atmosphere), but as the rocket climbs into thinner atmosphere, the exhaust will expand drastically. This is why engines optimized to operate in the vacuum have much wider nozzles despite typically producing way less thrust.
Anyways, great stuff.
Literally Transcendence but more 3D lol - loved that game
Very nice video! Looks like a lot of effort's gone into this project!
Kick a$$. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
this looks soo good man i cant wait to see the final project man! keep up the good work!
amazing Blender work
this looks great! keep up the good work with the game
Truly amazing how fast this is moving
This style of game is right up my alley. A decent selection of ships and some custom loadouts of those ships and I'd be in heaven. Would love to do some playtesting if/when its possible.
I think this is so cool! This is such a great fusion of game styles that I've always wanted! I love the submarine style of stand off combat and firing and maneuvering against enemies. And having missiles for space combat is a direction that I think humanity would heavily lean into more than energy weapons. So I hope it does workout!
Looking great already
Wow, this is looking amazing! I love it!
NIce. Physics look on-point. WIll be interesting to see how the rest of the game evolves when more systems come online.
so far aso good man. Love it
This looks very fun, I love the Escape Velocity games, and this looks like a fun action version of Homeworld, or Nebulous Fleet Command.
Anyway, please make it so missile lead their targets so they won't curve toward their targets. They should fly like bullets from a gun, with some ability to make course corrections to compensate for maneuvers. But they shouldn't be able to loop back. That would mean they have far too much fuel and should be used at longer ranges, and allowed to build up more speed.
It would be cool if missiles had a different proximity detonation to their contact detonation, and self destruct if they get too far from the intended target zone.
I do hope missiles will be able to go around obstacles. If you have an idea of where an enemy is but can't see them, you should be able to send missiles around to where you think they are, and the missiles should automatically lock onto what ever they find.
The other thing is, I love the silly pile of ejected missiles. I actually think that should stay in as an emergency launch method. It would also be a neat way to use the missiles as mines. Some real mines are just anchored torpedoes.
Really liking these videos!
Looks good man, love the design of ships
this seems so cool man, i genuinely would love to play this
The navy destroyer should be the hammer head shaped one! It has shark vibes!
Would be so cool to see the missiles operate like a VLS system in naval surface combat. Realistic 0G physics would mean the door to the missile tube flies off into space.
this looks great and I can already see the potential
Levelcap got tired of waiting for star citizen so decided to make his own
Looks great. Godspeed
To be able to hide in nebulas and dark spots in the shadows of asteroids would be pretty cool
Love the ship designs =)
Super cool, I much prefer this aesthetic to the generic sci-fi styles we see everywhere. I love the realistic maneuvering thrusters. I wonder at what distances the battles will take place at. Obviously this was super close but it's a demo. Will it stay at close range or will it be much further (The Expanse style)? You could also take the gameplay in many directions from here which is exciting.
I recommend taking a look at Nebulous Fleet Command, the way you visually do missiles (and a lot of the aesthetic in general) is very similar and you might find it a good source of inspiration!
This is Awesome dude
Big Terra Invicta and Expanse vibes from this
This looks great!
Hoping to see some DEW's!
(Directed energy weapons)
7:37 nice donnager you got there.
this game is also really reminiscent to nebulas fleet command fantastic game if you have never played it, it is signifigently more complicated but def worth a look if you havnt before
Loving this so much
Two chads with a thousand lego figures behind them XD
it would be super cool if dead ships you want to loot stay moving so you have to match and dock them to loot them. I always have loved these idea of moving around and an object that appears stationery but in reality your both moving through space. It reminds me of what a space carrier might be like one day
If you're game launches before Star citizen and has less bugs that would be hilarious and good. Good update.
This is amazing.
I remembered the aliens from the movie Battleship and their weird weapons systems. It did exactly what your first missile launch was like where they went end over end. It think if you actually gave a missile with that property. It would loom really cool and you could make some cool aspects and properties for it.
Looks fun!
Looks fun!!
Holy shit nice job level!!!
Can only Imagine the progress 3 years from now.
Looks cool👍
Are you planning on adding a "boarding" system to the game? Have crew auto board/complete or play the boarding yourself? Would be cool to have gear for your crew that could level up stats. Like expert gunners, navigators, etc.
If you add boarding would you consider adding landing your ship on planets? Not for open world stuff more to see your ship and interact with vendors in a different in environment. Maybe so players can visit your ship and see it. As a alternative to docking in space.
Really cool!
Hyped for this
I love me a good passion project, hope your endeavor pays off LevelCap.
I'd really like there to be a faction, where all ships and projectiles behave like 5:40. Something like the "buggy" faction. Those spinning rockets look hilarious.
imagine if there was a mode where it was all about boarding action, you have a team of other players in the ship, the are able to control power, turrets etc and then when you board, it your crew jump in and go into first person and it becomes a shooter, maybe not for this game as its hard to do, but that would be cool
Nice those little updates.
Keep it up it's super fun!
When will it drop on steam?
Thats already looking great man ill jump on the discord see if I can help with models for rockets or turrets
CIG should hire you to make the Merchantman.
Okay this is so cool
Amazing guys
I really like the top down camera style you chose and I would like to suggest that you add a zoom in function so that players can see their ship in detail
I am also making a game that we started making about a week ago in unreal. Different genre but its cool how easy unreal is to work with. In a week I have created character movement with some parkour, wall climbing, crouching, dodge rolling, and some basic attack and block. I only have time after work to do this but its pretty intuitive. I found some free assets to use for now but I'm wondering if we want to make our own assets later. As a software engineer making my own assets seems a lot harder that actually putting the game together. This weekend I am going to polish up the combat and character locomotion and test running around my buddy's level and fighting basic NPCs.
Good luck on your project! cant wait to see how it turns out
I hope the ship layouts are vertical if anything (except in cases where they should be centrifugal of course). Not that it's the sort of game where players navigate within the ship but lore-wise.
I've been playing a bit of Nebulous: Fleet Command lately. This looks like it shares a bit of the DNA there. I really like their modular missile system
Bobiverse vibes for days
I love the missile physics, have you considered repair drones as well?
Looks cool
If you want to go for the no drag approach, I'd still argue you should have a system to stop the craft (Or match the velocity of another craft) once the velocity is *basically* zero, so aren't drifting around the whole time.
This is sweet!
Didn't miss, as promised.
top work so far, would love to be able to make and design a game
This is very cool
It cool to try build your own game in space which either easy and hard.
amazing :D
Chris Roberts after seeing this : guys, LevelCap is cooking, we need to cook harder!
This is sweet! X2
Awesome!
