If you want a very good analysis of this video try Three Arrows for it. Yet even their 30+ minutes video barely touched on the background of what is crammed into the Rammstein video.
Edit: the significance of 16 AD was due to the fact that ancient Romans effectively conquered and subjugated nearly all of the Mediterranean, right down to Egypt, into Gaul/France, Hispania/ Spain, and much of Northern Africa. Yet when it came to the British Isles, they succeeded at taking the south, right up to what is now known as Hadrian's Wall. On the continent they also conquered anything moderately fordable by river. So what is today the Benelux countries was split into Germania Inferior and Germania Superior according to ancient Roman historians. The south of what was Germania Magna, greater Germany, was reachable by the Danube, thus conquered right up to the Main river in what is modern day central Germany. Everything north and east of the Rhine was contended lands, still under control of many splintered, disunited Germanic tribes, who often we're at war with each other.
These tribes did not unite against the Romans until the captured Germanic tribesman Arminius returned from his legionary time. He had been trained as an auxiliary soldier in the Roman army, thus knew their tactics. He was officially sent out by Varus, the Roman general and governor of the conquered areas in Germania Magna as a diplomat to ask the Germanic tribes to surrender and submit to Roman rule without too much bloodshed. Arminius would have nothing of it, and instead succeeded at uniting his own tribe with two or three other tribes, seeking revenge on the Romans for his 20 years of slavery as an auxiliary.
In the end, the Battle at the Teutoburger Forest was an utter disaster for the Romans. They lost nearly three complete legions in a horrible three day battle. Over 30000 men wiped out. It was the greatest defeat the Romans had suffered in their entire history. Even Hannibal crossing the Alps did not compete with that disaster. It essentially hamstrung all Roman advances to the north of the Alps, including on the British Isles, simply because they couldn't afford to rebuild these legions.
Some historians even go so far that this battle changed the course of history. The previously undefeated, and seemingly invincible Roman legions, had been decisively beaten for the first time. With this they lost the fear factor of invincibility. In addition the Senate wad furious over the incredible financial losses as well. Germanicus, the Roman general sent out in 16 AD on a punitive expedition found the rotted remains of Varus soldiers strung up in trees, ritually gutted and slaughtered as sacrifices to the Germanic tribes gods. Often decapitated and desecrated after death, as a signal to the Romans not to set foot on the Germanic tribes' lands again. Viscious times.
After this the Romans barely succeeded at holding their territories north of the Alps, right up to the line of fortifications known an as the Limes. That is the origin of the English Word 'limit', btw. The end or border of something good, beyond which only barbarians lived.
This expedition in 16 AD was the beginning of the end of the ancient Roman hegemony over northern Europe, and ultimately the Mediterranean as well.

16AD was the culmination of Germanicus' campaigns against the Germanic tribes that had defeated Varus. They were decimated by the Romans. Satisfied with their revenge they decided that Germania beyond the Rhine was not worth the trouble and expense of further expeditions. It took another 400 years for Western Rome to collapse.

    • @MarcusKrank
      @MarcusKrank Год назад +1

you forgot to mention that Germanicus then proceeded to slaughter pretty much everyone for more than 7 years as retaliation, bending anyone to Rome's will. Also, Rome has never been that interested in Germania at all: they only started their aggressive campaign of conquering because few germanic tribes started to raid roman provinces that were close to the Rhine

    • @PalleRasmussen
      @PalleRasmussen Год назад +6

I am a historian, it is a bit more complicated than all three of you describe. Do not forget that one of Germanicus' generals (I forget which) almost lost four legions in 15 AD, while in the open battles the Romans were unbeatable as was shown in Idastaviso and Angrivarian Wall. If I was to simplify; Germania was a "Vietnam" or "Afghanistan"; too costly and troublesome to rule, because the Germans would never give up and always had the forests to retreat to (and reinforcements from as far away as Jutland indicated by place names and grave finds). This was a problem as in contrast to the other areas they conquered, there were no cities to take over rule from. No infrastructure to use in controlling the people.
The decision to withdraw was ultimately the right one. Germania was and would remain an economic black hole for Rome had they occupied it, and though they could win open battles, guerrilla is difficult to defeat and there were no resources of worth to exploit. Much better to do what they did, and make alliances with some German tribes and keep them infighting (we have a wonderful find of Roman drinking chalices made of silver with imagery from The Illiad, found on Sjælland, with Silivs engraved in the bottom, likely a gift from that Roman commander to a chieftain on Sjælland so he would keep the tribes of Jylland occupied).

pretty good description of all of you guys, but _maybe_ you're forgetting one essential part, that i think rammstein is refering to (i might be wrong though).
arminius, teutoburg and so on had an almost mythological impact on german selfidentity (mainly in the 18th/19th century, but actually beginning earlier and lasting longer ... in a way until now). arminius has been depicted as a heroic and romanticized figure, that allegedly united the germanic tribes and thus founded the german nation. the reformer martin luther even used this narrative to somewhat justify his 'german protestant reformation' opposing 'the evil pope in rome'; and obviously that narrative also was appreciated by later nationalists (incl. the nazis). the later roman expeditions and battles of the romans in which 'the germanics' lost (esp. arminius, who was almost killed and had to flee), were largely ignored, because they didn't sound that 'heroic' from a german perspective. almost _all_ germans with some basic knowledge in german history know about teutoburg; and almost none know about idistaviso and so on.
the fact that rammstein refer to 16 AD (instead of 9 AD - 'our alleged independence day') to me seems like a way to challenge that narrative of 'german(ic) superiority' against the romans (and the rest of the world). imagine bruce springsteen singing about the 5th of july and how terrible he feels due to being hungover and almost getting into a car accident. _yes,_ the romans lost at teutoburg forrest, but _no,_ arminius did _not_ found the german nation. he was killed by his own folks in the end (i'm not even sure if till's decapitated head represents varus ... or is it arminius?). at the end of the day the most likely enemy of a german(ic) was and in a way still is another german(ic) - not the romans, not the huns, not the magyars, not the frenchies, not the british, not the americans, not the russians and so on. 'german(ic) unity' might work for a couple of years, but it doesn't take _that_ long, until we turn against each other - tribe against tribe, region against region, denomination against denomination, class against class, ideology against ideology and so on.
in a way one could argue that german patriotism thus is the most 'ungerman' thing to do or believe in. so, no wonder we have somewhat less national pride than others have or are pushing for greater politcal entities (like the EU). that's not only due to the third reich, but also because all of the centuries before. at the end of the day were still a somewhat 'loosely alliance of tribes', that _can_ unite against others in (allegedly) desperate situations, but tend to not do, if not absolutely necessary.

Rammstein does not provide an explanation for the video. For me, the food scene alludes to the fact that the nobility and clergy lived at the expense of the general populace in the Middle Ages. At that time, the monks sold letters of indulgence that were supposed to secure access to paradise for money. The Pope then used the money to build St. Peter's Basilica.

First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how most of us feel about our country. It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. What a image! (That's like the Statue of Liberty being pushed in a wheelchair through a graveyards of an Native Indians.)
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1989).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal helping (dressed in red) a new Germany being born.
At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming to extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completed how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1989. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity. It's complicated.

the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song:
Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history.
Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the Romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII). The standard I guess refers to a relic which was part of the Imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation ("Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" - the conglomerate of mostly German territories which was ruled by a emperor elected by the highest ranking nobles of the realm and persisted from the 10th century until 1806). This relic, the Lance of Longinus, is dated back to the 8th century and was said to contain in it's tip one of the nails that were used in the crucifixion of Jesus. It was supposed to make any army that carries it into battle invincible. It can still be seen today in a museum called "die Schatzkammer" (the treasure chamber) in Vienna,/Austria.
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s.
Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people.
Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppress the common folk (underneath the table).
The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI.
Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN“ (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line “Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS“ (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein’s version translating to “Germany, Germany above everyTHING”). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore “Germany, Germany above everything” was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWI this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded from the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from “Germany above everyTHING” (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to “Germany above everyONE” which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich.
The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (yellow star for Jews, Pink triangle for Homosexuals, red symbol for political adversaries (communists). Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm.
Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times.
The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies representing the German people. The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who’s population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people.
In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany. Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it’s difficult history:
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.) Here now the lyrics (copied from the internet):
    [Verse 1]
You (You have, you have, you have, you have)
Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried)
Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated)
United in heart (United, united, united, united)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
Have been together for so long (You are, you are, you are, you are)
Your breath's cold (So cold, so cold, so cold, so cold)
The heart in flames (So hot, so hot, so hot, so hot)
You (You can, you can, you can, you can)
    I (I know, I know, I know, I know)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
You (You stay, you stay, you stay, you stay)
    [Chorus]
Germany - my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
    Germany - your breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany!
    [Verse 2]
I (You have, you have, you have, you have)
I never want to leave you (You cry, you cry, you cry, you cry)
One can love you (You love, you love, you love, you love)
And want to hate you (You hate, you hate, you hate, you hate)
    Presumptuous, superior
    Take over, hand over
    Surprise, invade
    Germany, Germany above everyone
    [Chorus]
Germany - my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany - your breath is cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany - your love
Is a curse and a blessing
    Germany - my love
    I can't give you
    Germany!
    Germany!
    [Bridge]
    You
    I
    We
    All of you
    You (superior/overpowering, unnecessary)
I (Übermenschen (translates to “superior humans” - a term the Nazis implicitly used for themselves as the calles other races “Untermenschen” - translating to “inferior humans”), weary)
We (The higher you climb, the further you fall)
    You (Germany, Germany above everyone)
    [Chorus]
Germany - your heart in flames

The song is about the ambivalent relationship of Rammstein and many Germans to their country, because of the violent and cruel history with extensive human crimes ("red line of violence through german history"), especially in recent history. Therefore the video features various events from German history, including Roman times, the Middle Ages, witch hunting and burning, Protestant Reformation, the November Revolution, the "Golden Twenties" and hyperinflation, Nazi book burnings, the Hindenburg disaster, the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Weimar Republic, the Red Army Fraction (violent anti-capitalist terror alliance of young people and students against Nazis in high state and economy positions in post-war Germany), and the division of the country into West and East Germany including the Uprising June 17 in East Germany. The black woman represents Germany and one of the Colors of the German flags, sometimes as a victim, but mostly as a perpetrator. With her black skin she is also a provocation to all stupid racists
A lot of people do not understand the scenes with the dogs. This breed of dogs are not German Shepards, but Leonberger. This breed of dog narrowly escaped extinction during the First and also Second World Wars and is symbolic of the German people, whose existence was also strongly threatened in those wars (Morgenthau-Plan) - both now have a second existential chance, just like the new German democratic constitution, which in future must be protected as strongly as if it were under quarantine (Judges in red robes, Rammstein members in protective suits with the dogs)
The Holocaust was for this reason the greatest human crime because it was the first industrially organized mass murder in human history, by a country that was culturally at its highest point at this time and called itself the country of poets and thinkers. But it is precisely the high cultural and scientific level of Germany that unfortunately caused others to be viewed as subhuman who can be killed without pity, just like animals. Seeing other people as inferior has always brought a lot of suffering to people
Rammstein is one of the most famous metal bands and are living legends with the same line-up for nearly 30 years. They are a german band and are considered the best live band in the world, especially when it comes to showmenship, pyro and fire. Above all, Rammstein uses pyro quite differently than all other bands.
Rammstein's music is a mixture of techno (electronic music) and metal (= industrial metal), although Rammsteins origins are in punk music. Rammstein concerts are a life time experience that you will never forget. Their videos are art but also often controversial.
Rammstein also refers to classical German literature, e.g. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's. Several of their songs are related to controversial and taboo subjects such as sadomasochism, homosexuality, intersexuality, incest, pedophilia, necrophilia, cannibalism, pyromania, religion and sexual violence. Also several of their songs are allegedly inspired by real-life events or politics. Rammstein lyrics are very deep and are also often used in school and universities around the world to learn German. There are people who learn German only because of Rammstein. Rammstein fans are considered to be the craziest and most fanatical fans in the world. In concerts from the hardcore fans all over the world it is expected that you can sing along with the German lyrics even if you don't speak German.

Compliments for your analysis and reflection on what you´ve just experienced. And hats off for not skipping the outro (what you should never do when watching Rammstein).
Heard you even mentioning Nietzsche, book burnings, Germania the personification I thought the following might be of intereset for you:
Deutschland by Rammstein and the music video have incredibly deep meanings and a lot of layers with regards to symbolism , imagery, historical and references and literary references. As well in relation to things which happend in the passed as in relation to Zeitgeist.
The first layer is the obvious: a song about something/someone who isgood and bad and you do not know if you shall love or condemn-
The second layer are the historical references from the roman times to the presents and even further to the possible future.
The third layer is the usage of words, sayings and idioms (e.g. the prefix „über“ or „wer hoch steigt der wird tief fallen“.
The fourth layer are these little subtle hints they make like:
    - the actress representing Germania is black (the german flag is black, red and gold) not mentioning all the other hints mage by choosing a black woman
    - Germania wearing a patch on the right side during the Nazi regime
    - the different symbols on the chests on the ones to be executed representing not only the jewish but all groups doomed to be eliminated by the Nazis
    - the band members beeing the prisoners AND the guards
    - and so much more
The fith layer are the references to Zeitgeist and literature like for example how Germania the persification was portrayed through the centuries.
An if you are a musician (and I am not) Iam sure you would find a sixth layer.
If you are intereseted to dig deeper I would recomment to watch the following YT videos which are in english:

The Roman campaigns in Germania (12 BC - AD 16) were a series of conflicts between the Germanic tribes and the Roman Empire. Tensions between the Germanic tribes and the Romans began as early as 17/16 BC with the Clades Lolliana, where the 5th Legion under Marcus Lollius was defeated by the tribes Sicambri, Usipetes, and Tencteri. Roman Emperor Augustus responded by rapidly developing military infrastructure across Gaul. His general, Nero Claudius Drusus, began building forts along the Rhine in 13 BC and launched a retaliatory campaign across the Rhine in 12 BC. in AD 9. During the return trip from his campaign, Varus' army was ambushed 3 Legions 30,000 Romans was destroyed by a Germanic force led by Arminius at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest; Arminius was the leader of the Cherusci, had previously fought in the Roman army, and was considered by Rome to be an ally. Roman expansion into Germania Magna stopped as a result. The so called cannibals scene was depicting the church feeding of Germania while the people starved the birth of the dogs was the rebirth of a breed called Leonberger During World War I, reportedly, only five Leonbergers survived World War I and were bred until World War II when, again, almost all Leonbergers were lost. You said you don't know much about German history the man on the moon was the result of a Nazi SS-Sturmbannführer (Major) Wernher von Braun who was widely seen as the "father of space travel", the "father of rocket science" or the "father of the American lunar program". Wernher von Braun led NASA'S development of the Saturn V rocket that took Apollo 11 to the Moon. His Nazi record was not widely known but it was a German that put a man on the moon and it was Germans that run the Russian space programs. We all nations need to look into our past histories. Peace out.

Yes, you have found the point. The first time I see someone who understands. Good job. 16 A.D. marks the point in history where the German people came into being as such, when the Romans got their asses kicked for the first time. And the person Germania stands for the whole people, their knowledge, their passion, their agression, their misbehaviour etc. We sometimes want to hate it but we can't stop loving it - our Germania. It means we all belong together whether we like it or not. And that we protect her to the last - as we see how Germania is protected by her noblest men. Until the end, where she gives new life in the form of german shepards. Symbolism - I know - but that's what the video is about.

On the roman wars with germanic tribes: The first big battle took place 9AD in the Teuteburg forest, where 3 roman legion were severly beaten and had to retreat over the rhine river. 16AD an other roman general retried to conquer the regions right of the rhine but failed again due to high losses during the campaign.
Many historians claim these events as the birth myth of a german "nation", although these tribes never build a unified "country".
The first acutal german empire was founded in the succession of Charlemagne roughly around the 10th century when the empire of the franks split into 3 parts where the western part became France in the end and the eastern part Germany (the middle part was dissolved over time and integrated into France and Germany).

Germanicus attacked with 8 legions. Since the Romans only had about 5 of their over 20 legions at their free disposal, the attack may have endangered the security of the empire. That's why there was no repetition. 300 years later comes the counterattack with the Barbarian invasions. The Germans penetrate deep into the empire until it crumbles.

Here are some scene interpretations (although there are many more):
    - the roman soldiers at the beginning are the romans that went back to the Teuteburger Forrest, where the famous "Varus-Schlacht" happened and 3 roman legions were annihilated, to retrieve the corpses of the fallen legionnaires. This is somewhat seen as the origin of germany, altough a united german nation has only been created 1871, hence the lyrics "so young and yet so old".
    - Every scene has the colors black, red, gold in it, as the colors of the german national flag.
    - the knights could be seen as the various kingdoms that existed where germany is today in the middle ages, which were defeated often, but always "resurrected".
    - the Hindenburg-Catastrophy
    - the GDR-part, where the party leaders drink champagne (in contrast of the supposed equality in socialism), normal people couldn't buy such luxury goods. Also the lyrics "separated in spirit, united in heart" targets at this period in time, where germany was ideology wise (and through the inner german border) parted (in west and east germany), but the germans wanted desperately to unify again.
    - the part with the priests eating sausages and sauerkraut of "germany". The clergy in the middle ages feasted of "germany", while for the normal people only leftovers fall down of the table. But since the people under the desk are wearing Sado Maso-Masks, it can also be seen, that the clergy has their hidden "perversions" as for example the child abuse within the church.
    - the actress playing germania in the second world war scene has a eye patch over her right eye symbolising the blindness for right wing crimes during second world war (and also sometimes after the war as well).
    - the Red Army Fraction that's holding "germania" as hostage.
-the clerics embracing the nazi soldiars as critique, that the church did nothing against the nazis during WW2.
    - "germania" giving birth to the dogs: those are leonbergers, a german breed that got nearly extinct after the second world war. It may symbolize, that germany was close to be eradicated after the war, but instead the germany and the germans of today had been "born". That is also emphasized with the doctor wearing clothes resembling the red robe and hat of a judge of the german constitutional court, as the base of the modern germany is the "Grundgesetz", the german constitution.
    - there is a scene, where left wing extremists throw over a car, a symbolism for violent acts of left wing extremists, but there is a second, where a nazi is shown in light together with them. That may be mentioned, that left wing extremists are in no way better than the nazis in their "terror" and the mindset of those left wing extremists in using acts of violence for their means is only "nazis in other clothes" or that in the end, they use crime, brutality and murder, the same way the nazis did. It's the so called "Hufeisentheorie", horse shoe theory.
    - the band members (and the actress of germania!) holding the leonberger puppies behind the red robe doctor: everyone of them is a german, standing behind the german constitution.
    - "germania" drifting in space: the unknown future of germany.
These are some details and my interpretation of it. But as I said, there are tons of details and different possible interpretations.

Great reaction and discussion guys! Really appreciated it. When it comes to the dogs / puppies: At first Germania is followed by a german shepherd, which is considered a "pure blooded race". In the end she gives birth to Leonberger dogs, whichs is a mixed race of shepherds and other foreign dogs. To me this is a symbol how Germany changed and is no longer trying to fight for pure blood / arian race, instead we are now a country that is kind of multi cultural an - for the most part - this is accepted and welcomed throughout our population

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space.
The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The words "Germania Magna" at the beginning are a Roman name for the area of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Roman Empire at that time.
Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were the Roman conquered areas (Roman provinces) of Germany.
The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means:
Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity.
So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state.
So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old.
The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of commanding field general Germanicus under Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation.
One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem.
Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything).
The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world).
This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere.
The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way.
When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteenth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way).
So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else".
That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song.
The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore.
This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore.
We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore.
It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Greetings
    Mega

PS: RUclips didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here:
The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform. The SA did all the dirty work at the beginning of the Nazi rise to power...until the "Night of the long knives", an inner-Nazi power struggle, happened. The head of the SA (Ernst Röhm) was killed and from then on the SA was turned more and more into the SS under Himmler.
The book burnings were part of the early Nazi years, too, and were done by the SA, too. One can see the SA burning the books and Till is watching it in a brown SA uniform.
Both, Kristallnacht and book burnings were different things and happened at different times. The book burnings happened over a longer timespan at different locations at different times during the Kristallnacht was one big "event" that happened at one single day.
Kristallnacht means "Crystal Night" and was called that way, because the smashed shop windows of the Jewish shops looked like thousands of crystals on the ground. But in the Rammstein video I've only seen the book burnings.
      PPS:
The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution. Those two beer drinking soldiers are Prussian soldiers and they are emphasizing the importance of Prussia for the German history.
As far as I could see: They were from the era of Friedrich der Große (The Old Fritz), who was of extraordinary importance for German history. Amongst many other achievements he was the one, who brought the potato to Prussia and Germany. That saved many Germans from hunger and the potato became one of the most beloved foods in Germany on that way.

Comparing national pride with a relationship is a very good analogy (I also use it often in discussing this video). Germans' love for their country obviously comes with a lot of baggage which has to be adressed and worked out. The line "so young and yet so old" reflects this, because the current state of Germany was founded in 1949 after the war, but you can't pretend that the things before didn't happen. It's like we're in couple therapy for the last 70 years to work through our issues with Germania. Worked out well so far, I'd say. 🙂

I like your video. You're very open minded. The video, well there's so much to say. Germania is black because of the national colors black red and gold. At 16 AD the first leader of the Germanic tribes, Arminius, died. He fought the Roman conquerors back so they only occupied 1/3 of the country. Germania took his head - the laser beam marks his location - and cherished it for centuries, meaning some sort of dark tribalism survived in the nation. In the beginning she is accompanied by wolves, turning into aggressive German shepherds. The guys from the future came back to save the Leonberger dogs, who were the opposite of the Shepherds, friendly, nice and easy. They almost died out in every world war (true story!). The story ends with Germania giving birth to a lot of Leonberger puppies, symbolizing the friendly Germans..

The year 16 AD was the last year of the wars that the first Roman Emperor Augustus waged in "Germania Magna" to gain supremacy over the Germanic tribes between the Rhine and Elbe. Rome dominated this area for a few years with its numerically and technologically superior army, but the Germanic prince Arminius, who had lived as a hostage in the empire since his childhood and fought for the Romans, decided to side with the Germanic peoples and was one of the first who managed to unite many Germanic tribes to attack the Roman occupying forces under commander Varus. And indeed, in 9 AD, the fighters destroyed the three Roman legions and liberated Germania. This battle is known as the Varus Battle.
After this loss, Emperor Augustus sent another commander, Germanicus, to Germania to avenge Varus and reconquer the lost territories. But despite the military superiority of his eight legions, the largest Roman army at the time, Germanicus was never able to gain control of the Germanic territories and was forced to surrender in 16 AD by order of the new emperor Tiberius. This ended Augustus' wars in Germania and Rome would never again attempt to conquer the lands east of the Rhine.
One could interpret this time as the first unification of the Germans, even if the way of thinking of these people had not much to do with our current understanding of a nation. Some time after the victory, the Germans even killed their leader Arminius because he was grabbing too much power and the tribes wanted to remain independent and saw themselves as free people. They didn't want to be ruled, not even by one of their own.
But it is fitting that this is the period in which the personification of Germania first appears. She recognizes her power, which later ignites in a frenzy of passion and love, but also power and arrogance ("My Heart in Flames"), which in turn creates chaos and suffering. Ecstatic love turns into hatred for the resulting deeds. But at the same time, Germania's passion, arrogance and greed for power doesn't end, she even turns a blind eye to the horrific crimes of the Nazis (hence the eyepatch?). Every time the chorus starts and she shouts "Deutschland!", the ecstasy begins again, except for the second time, when we are in the concentration camp. Germania no longer seems to be proud of what she's doing, but she still allows it because her arrogance can't let go of the power. In the third chorus, the escalation is let loose again. She becomes a victim again and again, for example when the Christian elites gorge themselves on her in times of crisis while the rest of the population has to starve, but she always gets up and for example brings the dead knights back to life with her passion, but she cannot control herself and chaos breaks out again.
The song conveys a very specific feeling many Germans have of a difficult relationship with the country they were born into. It also addresses the question of where our country wants to go. The tribes of 16 AD did not want a unified state. The German peoples in the 19th century wanted one, but did not agree on what it should look like. When there was a united state, it was designed from above and not by the people. After the lost World War many felt humiliated, many lived in poverty or in areas that were no longer Germany. But Nazism produced far worse things. The singer says "Germany, I can't give you my love" while being hanged in the concentration camp. He wants to give his love but literally can't because his own country has declared him an enemy and is now murdering him. The song is kind of about looking back and realizing what happened and what we admire and hate about the past, but at the same time wanting to look to the future, knowing that we can't reject ourselves but rather consider how we want to move on, with the constant sword of Damocles showing us what could happen again.

Rammstein likes to put a double entendre on all their lyrics. The most important words they choose tend to be homonyms that when sung, can mean completely different things unless you know how they spelled it.
They purposely make it so most of their songs can have completely different interpretations, especially since English is a Germanic language and it works better for us than in other languages.
Du hast- can be wedding vows or rebellion and someone hating him for it.
    Homonyms man…

Well, the comment of @anu83 gave you a detailed description on mainly all of the points in history which each scene is related to. That was very well done. One thing I would like to mention, knowing about the German history of the 40's of the 20th century is good, but the reasons why it came to all this have to be understood as well. With the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was given the sole blame for the First World War. In addition to this disgrace, Germany had to pay enormous reparations. Germany never recovered from this. The Weimar Republic, with its first ever democratically elected parliament, collapsed. Inflation, hunger, and racism against Jews and anyone who was not German made it easy for the Nazis to seize power. You could describe this period with one sentence: Make Germany great again! Does this ring a bell to you? All this is a big topic in school in Germany and hopefully helps to avoid believing populists in the future. These times must not be repeated ever again. Well, today populism is growing everywhere all around the world again. Maybe we have learned nothing at all.

the timee from 9 - 16 a.d.is seen as the birth of the germans as a whole, as this was the first time all german tribes allied against the romans and beat the crap out of them. in the so called varus-battle 3 legions of romans were slaughtered in the woods and the tribes nailed the whole roman army to trees (approx 20k soldiers) in 9 a.d.
following that in 16 a.d. the last push of the romans into germania was prevented

Took me a while to get to video. Which is just my general thing when I see a new reaction to this... I love the song and the video, but depending on the day I'm having I might not be in the headspace for a reaction....if that makes sense
I love that people put lots of effort into explaining the depicted history and all in the comments
One thing that always gets me is the KZ scenes/the hangings by the nazis cause all the guys wear a different sign, so it's only Jewish people that got killed/incarcerated, which were the majority of course, but also political people like communists and gay people (well mainly gay men cause of course the assumptions was women don't feel desire and all *sarcasm* gay person myself).

Just as a general observation for this video, I feel that the impact of it is more significant if the viewer has a full understanding of Nazism and the events leading up to WWII.
Rammstein are one of the only artists who fully acknowledge their cultural history, how the rest of the world veiws their cultural history, and they unapologetically use that sense of identity in their art.
Then you have the individual members who are unapologetic about how they present themselves. All of them except Flake very much present themselves almost misogynistically as the alpha male type, but all are also seen as very fluid with their gender identity and sexuality.

The Roman legions suffer a tremendous defeat against the Germanic tribes united by Arminius, the so-called Battle of Varus, which took place in the year 9 AD. In the year 16 AD Rome sent a legion who arrived on the battlefield to see their comrades sacrificed to the Germanic gods .
That's why the hanged people in the background. After that, the Romans never came back. The founding myth of the German nation. Even if many Germans don't know anything about it today. The whole video is full of allusions

Group guilt is one of the worse things that plague this world and statements like yours “feel your shame too” really proves that you feel extreme guilt for something you never did. I didn’t touch or do anything to our “First Nations” people in Canada, am I supposed to “feel my shame” for that too? So I am not sorry, but leave your force guilt on others who deserve to actually feel guilty.

Germany's history is Europe's history and more than the two world wars, which were just a blink of an eye in history. Ultimately, Germany's history is also a large part of US history. Over 70% of the immigrants in America were Germans and a Prussian general (Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin Freiherr von Steuben) made it possible for you to become independent from the British because your soldiers had no discipline. ;)

The song perfecly shows if you dont undrestand the past you dont know how facists and weird ideas about a master pure race would cach un . Meny peaple acutally dont know any thing about germany befor 1939 even how people got angaged with a befoon like hitler and the natzies, because the country under the wiermar republic got so brocken after ww1 that peaple of difrent ideolegies couldnt have a cofe together , and rampent coruption and inflashion , partly because alied victors of ww1 like france , uk , belgum , us and otheres demanded germany to pay up so much that their hubress wouldent have thout that 20 od years larer hitler would be prayding threw pariss buming londen and killing americans again playing the same game othere europeans had played for years but much worse, and after the war america and the west started duing the same stuff to third world contries and the ussr by pissing them of having not lereand a thing wich caused rusia to elect validimir putin and let his paranoya into the unjustified agression towards youcrane as a sopposed last stand against the otheres . Allso hitler had actually saw what the america south gad started to do trying to build or keep a wite cristean hetro normativ state without all the un desirables and all the ugenics programs implemented in britain and america and elsewhere and toock it to a hole new levell, but thankfully america 8n the 1960 realy started to shift towards restoring writes towards all amer8cans of all faiths and racess , and thats why from the 1980s unward the dwindeling peaple who still think they want a racially pure cristean nation have such a hard reaction to reality going threw any lengh to keep their marginall power over others , thats why we should work to snap people out of their fantecies and graple with our past so as not get stuck in our grevences just like germany thought their the air to the cristean roman empire and that the restmof europe had soficarwd them so we can make sure the darkness of the past never emerges.
