Today, we wanted to react to a Goliath of a music video; Rammstein's Deutschland. This video has proved very controversial, with people showing outrage at its representation of German history (the good, the bad, and the horrific). Nevertheless, we came in with an open mind, as it is our philosophy not to make judgments before we have seen something for ourselves.
Check out our reaction to Radio: • RAMMSTEIN does it AGAI...
We do not own, nor do we claim to own any part of this video or song. The link to the original is here: • Rammstein - Deutschlan...

Just came back to watch this video today on July 20th. First video we ever recorded. Didn’t know anything about how to make videos. We were watching a small Picture in picture image and recording our screen with the RUclips PIP. Could barely see anything. Then it got blocked and the only way to make it live was to edit more and allow RUclips to mute some portions. We honestly expected 100 views at most!
Check out some of our newer videos; we got much better on every single level.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before.
PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
    Recommendation for a review:
The band "Schwarzer Engel" and their song "Schwarze Sonne".
    Greetings
    Mega

Thank you so much for your very comprehensive review of the video and a very interesting take on the significance of the laser beams. And I (Chuck) went back to some of my favorites from Sehnsucht (Du hast, Engel, Buck Dich, Spiel Mit Mir) and indeed now remember all the synths in those songs as well. @@ChemicalReactions I'm glad that my posting was helpful. I've edited my posting at several points. I added a 30 years war perspective to my thoughts about the eaten Germania on the table with the Sauerkraut & Sausages.
"Industrial Metal" or only "Industrial" was invented by the band "Die Krupps" in the beginning of the 1980's. They are still around and they influenced many bands. Like "Oomph!" or "Eisbrecher", "KMFDM" or "Megaherz", for example.
      Therefore another recommendation from me:
The band "Die Krupps" and their song "Paradise Now".

Rammstein are the purest artists in music today. They do what they want, how they want and when they want and never apologise for it.
To this day they have been together as an unchanged line-up from day one for over 25 years. They are as much an expressionist art collective as they are a band. But they also write incredibly simple, catchy songs.

    • @Norbert_Sattler
      @Norbert_Sattler 4 года назад +7

Simple... and yet complex as well.
Some have simple lyrics that are just simple fun. Some seem to be simple, but hide complex meanings. And some are just complex in structure and meaning.
Unlike some other famous artists, they constantly change, evolve and try new things, while still keeping the core of their work similar enough to keep their original fans happy... it's a bit hard to put into words, but that's what makes them fascinating and rather timeless.

This is without a doubt their best work . If you understand the language the songs meaning is apparent immediately. I've been learning to speak german for a little while so I had a little understanding of lyrics . The history aspect of it doesn't take long if you do a little digging . Most people dont get that involved into a video but this particular video has really grabbed a lot of people . This is the reason they are so popular around the globe .Its history ,art, music, entertainment all wrapped up the way only Rammstein can deliver . Love them or hate them ,they are musical geniuses that have stood the test of time . You two did a great job sitting down and analyzing this song together. When Americans don't know the history of another country, it's "How stupid and provincial of Americans! How can they possibly not know the entire history of every country that's ever existed?? How can they not know every language spoken on the planet?"

The black woman plays "Germania" the female form of Germany that is not real, just a fictive person. The laser is "the red thread" through the story! You have to watch the video at least 5 times to see all the details! Or did you see the airship "Hindenburg" explode ?? Just an example of many details in the video! Also look at the prisoners who have different badges on their prison uniforms.
These badges show political and homosexuals as well as Jews. But you can only see that if you look carefully!
And no it's not Ausschwitz but Travemünde where the V2 was developed.Actually, it's about "hate and love" which beat in a heart when it comes to German history.
Again, chronologically, the video goes from the invasion of the Romans to the Middle Ages where the population was ripped off by dignitaries of the Christian representatives to the NAZI's and the people's representatives of the GDR. The terrorists of the RAF appear in the 70s, where Til the lieder singer of Rammstein plays a character in the red leather skirt, which at that time was also a dark side in West Germany. The RAF (Red Army Faction) was supported by the GDR with money and weapons as well as shelter.
The fighter with the beard in his face played in Berlin in the 20's of the last century, when the class struggle of the different groups took place.
Did you see the rats? Well, what comes to your mind? "Pied Piper of Hamelin" as a metaphor. How to catch people in the mind ????
Rammstein also expects the story with the video "Radio". What the NAZI's and the GDR to hear the ban Westradio. ruclips.net/video/z0NfI2NeDHI/видео.html

My two Cents in: 1. The start of the singing is " Du hast viel geweint … " ( you have wept a lot ), when the Romans attack Germania. It represents the roman Revenge- Campaign under Nero Claudius Germanicus ( Father of later Emperor Caligula ), after seeing what Germania did to their comrades during and after the battle in the Teutoburg Forest ( 9AD ). 2. When the band- members are shown eating Germania, they are dressed as MONKS/ Clericals. 3. Shortly before the Scene of NAZIs Burning books, you see a Monk setting fire to burn a witch/ witcher in one of Rammstein´s stage- outfits. During the book- burning, said Monk is seen embracing one of the NAZIs... Nonetheless, dear ChemicalReactions!, i enjoyed your Video really much! Keep on your good work ( Maybe with some other RAMMSTEIN- Videos, too? )!

The portion of the video where you were talking about the men's mustaches is referring to the Weimar Republic which existed from about 1918 to 1933. The costumes depict the styles of clothing people wore during 1920's, so it's a little before WW2.

  • @Fackeldackel
    @Fackeldackel 4 года назад +4

As a german i might be able to explain some of the scenes in question. The beginning was referencing the infamous Varusbattle, where a bunch of usually divided germanic tribes lured Varus roman legions into an amush, whiped them out and stopped the roman expansion into middle europe. Due to the character of germany as a "late nation" and germanys federal nature, german nationalist, especially the Nazis under Hitler, attempted to idealize this moment in history as the founding of the german nation (when it actually most likely prevented it due to the lack of romanization which in other nations abolished most of the tribal cultures and cleared the path for the central national state). The feast scene most likely symbolizes how several different political parties and ideologies used the idea of germany as a national state to boost their own agenda. While the german state was founded very late compared to its neighbours by Otto von Bismarck, the idea of a german state wasn't that new. But noone knew how it actually should look, not even its borders were clear due to the state of austria - hungary. Should it be a monarchy? A democracy? Ultimately the attempt of a bottom up, democratic state founding failed in 1848 due to the still strong monarchs and lords (there were many!) and conservatives. It took a man like Otto von Bismarck and a lie to found germany from the top down. He lied, faked documents and got the several german feudal states to side with preussia against france. France was defeated completely and the resulting founding of germany on the corpses of french soldiers in Versailles poisoned the relation between the two nations until post WW2. Due to Bismarck being ultra conservative, the first (modern) german nation, the Deutsches Reich, was a monarchy and military state, and therefore in clear opposition to more modern nations as the USA, UK and the post war french republic. Conflict and war were innevitable due to the german economic and military power and arrogance. Only under Konrad Adenauer post WW2 the new federal republic of germany finaly joined the international community (and was accepted by them as equal, which it wasn't realy before WW2). However, all the bloody crimes in german history were commited in the name of germany, symbolized in the feast scene. But to fully understand Rammsteins video you have to know about germany as a late nation, the resulting hurt ego among german nationalists and how the real bad guys used this hurt ego (hidden under several layers of national pride) for their own agenda. In many ways politicians abuse this human tendency for overcompensation until today (for example in poland, another late nation)

This is really enhanced by even a rudimentary knowledge of German. Lyrics like:
"Deutschland, mein Herz in Flammen; Will dich lieben und verdammen" - "Germany, my heart in flames; I want to love you, I want to curse you", or
"Deutschland, dein Atem kalt; So jung, und doch so alt" - "Germany, your breath so cold; So young, and yet so old". or indeed
"Deutschland, deine Liebe; Ist Fluch und Segen" - "Germany, your love; Is a curse and a blessing", and finally
"Deutschland, meine Liebe; Kann ich dir nicht geben" - "Germany, my love; I cannot give you".
These are all lyrics of men who don't seek to glorify the history of their nation. But rather understand it's dark moments, and accept them as such.

  • @Norbert_Sattler
    @Norbert_Sattler 4 года назад +4

Going by the lyrics it seems to me like the song is about how the bandmembers feel about their homecountry. The good times, the bad times, the pride, the shame... everything. Not just a single time period, but... everything, though not in terms of events, but in terms of emotions.
"Will Dich lieben und verdammen" = "Want to love you and to damn you"
"Deine Liebe is Fluch und Segen" = "Your love is curse and blessing"

Hey, I wanted to say something about Germania. Yes, she represents Germany, you could draw similarities with the statue of liberty. She has a long history and had many faces, reaching back to the romans, which assumed Germania was the goddess which protected the germans (which werent germans at the time because the country didnt exist yet) from the advancing romans. The germans took that over and made it an official figure. You can find many statues of her, sometimes holding a sword or another weapon, but nearly always the protective shield with the german eagle. I only know of one well known picture where she actually has neither a weapon nor a shield, but a book. The shield is drawn on her coat of arms though.
Its a shame that she is nearly forgotten. I actually never learned about her in school and was able to overhear a conversation about "who that is supposed to be" in front of one of her pictures even though she is a figure longer than many others.

    PS: A little constructive criticism:
Try to talk about details of the seen things in the interruption breaks or after the video. Because during some of the best parts of the song Chuck was talking about the things he noticed and was detracting from the reaction on this way during the some of the best parts of the music (where I wanted to see you react to). For example, when Till started to sing with his deep voice the first time during singing "Du hast viel geweint".
When muting / editing the sound away...try not to edit your comments away, too.
The best solution to such copyright claim threatened videos is:
Mute the sound completely after counting to Zero for the audience. So the audience can watch the original video on a second screen and watch your reaction on the other screen. The counting to zero makes it possible, to start the original video on the other screen at the same time you are starting to listen and reacting to the video and music.

This caught me off guard - i am from Germany and have kind of a hate/love thing going on with Rammstein. They had some problematic texts in the past, so their music was difficult for me. This video was automatic played after watching you reacting to nightwish. I was very disturbed why youtube muted so much and also curious, because of the epic design of the video. I went to the original video and it's so amazing - all the references to german history, the outstanding production and of course really fabelous music.
I couldn't comenting it on the Rammstein page, but I was soooo struck by this video, I had to write something somewhere. This might not be read by many people, because your reaction was from 7 month ago. I had to do it anyway. I think I will buy the complete Album - never thought about getting an Rammstein Album before. Okay that's it, thanks for leading me to my new favorite musicvideo.

    Just found you :)
I would reccomend giving your Daughter a solid dose of Swedish Power Metal in the form of Sabaton. Their niche is Historical Military Metal, everything from Sparta (a favourite song of mine) through Viking, Medieval, Renaissance, WW1, WW2 and current conflicts.
Metal AND History....match made in this History Nerd's heart :)

My only dose of Rammstein was a vid I came across years ago; Ich Will. This message would seem to be a theme, but then again, nine sprechen ze deutch, (and I probably messed that up too, lol).

Germany being eaten was not only the allies after the war but Berlin was split into 4 zones of foreing control. I loved the insight you had on your very first viewing. I just wish I could hear what you were saying when they muted you.

the Germania being eaten was depicting the wealthy German church feasting on Germany, the people around the table were monks

The moment where the woman is being eaten is most likely the time when the catholic church gained it's power because you had to pay to be released from your sins etc. .

also i think is a reference from their album "liebe is fur alle da" where in the album art you can see them eating a woman

The director of this music video is Specter. This guy normally comes from the German Rap/hiphop scene and produces first of all music videos for German Rappers. He is also Co Founder of the German Rap Lable "Aggro Berlin".

fun fact: the part when Till sings and the music stops is cause that line was a reference from a line on the german national anthem " Germany, Germany above all" that after the WWII is not longer sung (or at least not longer sung on official occasions) , thats why the music stops in that moment cause there is more impact cause you are wondering if he really is gonna say it even better cause he is wearing one of the camp prissioners uniforms!! like saying "above all morals" please read the lyrics and all the history behind the video is so so good

We can't deny our past and we must remember so we don't repeat it. But we are forgetting to be proud of our nation. Pride is being confused with fascism and hate unfortunately.

Sheepdog471 That’s so true. You can’t be ashamed of your country forever. At some point you have to look to the future and the leadership that Germany is showing on the world stage. Don’t forget the past but look forward to the future.

@@ChemicalReactions I wish certain people in this country understood that. Instead Half of americans want to travel back to the "golden" times when women knew their place, gays were in the closet and blacks worked the fields. I don't mean to turn this is into a political argument but we are still losing in the common sense race no matter what your view is on any particular issue. That's one reason why Ramstein is so popular; They get it and aren't afraid to show it...and neither am I but I have no outlet except my cats...and they just sleep in boxes

A little history about the topics in the video. In general you can say it's a retrospectre of the German history, as you already mentioned.
Varusschlacht, Witch trials, crusade(s), industrialisation, Hindenburg, nazi-regime, east- and west germany, RAF. Guess I got evrything. This video is just so packed.
I wanna mention some fine symbols used in the video:
    - Black Germania: Germania ist represented with a black female (Ruby Commey) not just for provocation. Her clothes combined with her skin shows the German national colours (black, red, gold). Also it's a nice counterpart to all the uninformed people thinking, they're on the far right. (They're left)
    - The hanging scene: It's the only scene not exaggrated in comparison to the the other scences from the other decades. It's also seemingly the only scene, where some kind of revenge is shown. I think it shows some respect to replicate as it really was for the victims of this period.
    - The dogs: I think the dogs are German Sheppards, THE German dog itself. Also it could be a reference to scientific tests made during the nazi-regime, but that's a wild guess. Could be cause during the RAF scenes, they're growm out and this time takes place about 40-50 years after. But that's just a theory I read somewhere.
    - reference to old Rammstein songs: There some references to older Rammstein songs in the video.
The lyrics "Du hast" are wildely known from the song "Du Hast" which is the most well known across the globe.
The angel costume at the end is a reference to song "Engel". It's also the construct Till wears during live concerts
Same scene, different section: they're kneeling in front of the angel. These are references to the songs "Mein Teil", where they kneel in the video, and also the live version of "Bück dich"
The suits in the Hindenburg scene: It's a reference to "Ich Will", where the colourgrading looks similar and they also wear suits like that
    - Military Fire Scene: During the showcast of the burning books (representing the nazis), the monks were also there. It shows how much the church was involved in it due to fear of the nazis. So they co-operated with them
    - Eating monks: That point was mentioned in another comment here. So all credits there. But I wanna mentioned the people underneath the table in an orgy. It shows, that the rotten face of the church in medieval times, when they seemed abstinent to the outside but good Lord, there were also a lot of dark secrets. Could also be a reference to the modern time molesting cases, but I don't think so. Maybe.
I hope it's not that much to read. If so, I'm sorry for that and have a good day enjoying one of the most literary bands from Germany
