This is a very important topic to discuss. The biggest issue with change is that people generally don't want it. It's scary and that's why important and life-changing innovations and ideas never make it to the public. But change, in many cases, is important and for the better.
Actually, I think it's because of the worry of major fossil fuel industries completely decimating the feasibility of green energy. This is especially the case in America where these companies have enormous sway over government policy. Heck, they often undercut their prices to persuade American, who are often struggling, to adopt green energy equipment on a public scale

Oh well, it depends. If the change is beneficial for the climate but your life becomes more expensive, then that change is actually bad because it makes you poorer.
This reminds me so much of a basic economic concept called _externalities_. The most accurate definition of a externality is “the _uncompensated_ impact of one person’s _actions_ on the _well-being_ of a bystander.” An externality can be negative or positive, such as talking on the phone while driving which makes roads less safe for others or education which benefits those who are not directly involved in education because it increases the general intelligence of everyone around them. The problem with externalities is that markets ignores the social costs or social benefits of an action because humans follow their _own self-interest_ and _not_ the _interest of society_ as a whole. They can be fixed by government policy which “internalizes” the externality. This can be done with a per unit _tax_ for a negative externality (taking away money for every unit produced) or a per-unit _subsidy_ for a positive externality (giving money for every unit produced). This incentivizes producers to make more or less of the unit, which moves the market outcome closer to the socially desired outcome.

just because governments CAN do that, doesn't mean goverments always DO that. example - germany deciding to close it's 0-emmisions nuclear power plants because tsunami hit japan. what's that gonna be replaced with? mostly coal and gas.......... so yea.......
Very important topic, emphasising why extreme capitalism is good for (some) individuals but is bad for society in the long term. The US can learn from EU and AU on the value of positive government intervention.
Well to do that, you need to first convince Americans that they can trust their government to do just that. And with a good proportion of the country thinking that the solution is some problems is _less_ government, you got an uphill battle there.
Good ideas never see the light of day because bad ideas have the government in its back pocket. Texas is a good example of this. Despite being told about their power grid years ago, Texas continued to do things like they always have done because Texas government is dependent on big oil's money. In 2021, the Texas power grid failed and people froze to death.
The state government of Texas opposed it essentially as a tax dodge, but also as a “stand” against the federal government. People froze to death because of that ideology.
@@tapwater424 unironically Yes - you know that sometimes something happens that breaks a system that was all good and well until that final crisis? Happens in history, in science, in the market - Why should capitalism be above that?
@@zupurfeg89 We have already seen those crises happen, we know that capitalism isn't above it. No perfect system can exist, so best to get one that is highly flexible. This is an issue where capitalism, as Jacob Noelle pointed out, has difficulty doing because there isn't enough drive for it. Governments having a far greater income are the perfect sponges in order to sponsor these things, but the issue with governments is exactly that: they are sponges and that's why they are so heavily prone to debt. The cost and benefit has to be considered as we think about this. We need the excess but we also need the thrifty. All these are doomed to end, so why pitch that fact in order to make an argument? A law of the universe, all it is.

yes this is a liberal-capitalist solution to climate change trying to save the planet within basic capitalist framework. the only way to stop mass extinction and climate genocide is eco-communism
If you mention Germany's renewable energy policy, you should also mention that it imposes a tax on electricity of currently more than 20%. A tax from which many big companies have been exempted, but which the consumers have to pay!
I wish we could see half the efforts that are directed towards regular individuals to cut down on power and become environment friendly, while agriculture and animal products industries are massively destroying the eco system and the environment

Ron Swanson is screaming into the rectangle
I think you're thinking of conservatives. Libertarians usually prefer more government control on things while conservatives prefer more freedom.

Very new idea indeed)
This reminds me so much of a basic economic concept called _externalities_. The most accurate definition of a externality is “the _uncompensated_ impact of one person’s _actions_ on the _well-being_ of a bystander.”
An externality can be negative or positive, such as talking on the phone while driving which makes roads less safe for others or education which benefits those who are not directly involved in education because it increases the general intelligence of everyone around them.

Amazing!
Ted-Ed usually writes the name of that person on who's idea the video is based on, and I am getting a strong feeling that the last couple of ted-ed videos on climate change are coming from Bill Gates since he has written probably the most practical book on this topic that could be a guide for years to come.

I was studying for exam but learning from Ted-ed's videos decides my future
*The narrator is so on point*
Good ideas never see the light of day because bad ideas have the government in its back pocket.
Texas is a good example of this. Despite being told about their power grid years ago, Texas continued to do things like they always have done because Texas government is dependent on big oil's money. In 2021, the Texas power grid failed and people froze to death.
The state government of Texas opposed it essentially as a tax dodge, but also as a “stand” against the federal government. People froze to death because of that ideology.
Seems like a really great system wherein profits are limiting factor in developing ideas that would objectively benefit everyone...
How to escape the Valley of Death:
Step 1: Have your government fund your way out.
It almost like capitalism can't solve these issuses
@@jacobnoelle8428 WAAAH WAAAAH CAPITALISM BAD
A law of the universe, all it is.

step 0 : be politicians that won the elections

“It’s vital for the government (i.e. taxpayers) to subsidize corporations so they can make money with little/no risk for at least as long as it takes main stream investors to part with their cash.”

yes this is a liberal-capitalist solution to climate change trying to save the planet within basic capitalist framework. the only way to stop mass extinction and climate genocide is eco-communism

If you mention Germany's renewable energy policy, you should also mention that it imposes a tax on electricity of currently more than 20%. A tax from which many big companies have been exempted, but which the consumers have to pay!
