As of 2020, the world’s biggest lithium-ion battery is hooked up to the Southern California power grid and can provide enough power for about 250,000 homes. But it's actually not the biggest battery in the world: a pair of lakes are. How can lakes be a battery? I once went to a museum about Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia (built at the site of his original home!) and saw his original "battery," which apparently he named after a group of soldiers (which was called a battery back in those days). It was, like, sixteen metal cylinders connected with wires.
Or, at least that's how I remember it. If I got any historical details wrong, feel free to point them out.
A shame how almost everything we need is destructive to obtain.

@@abhayprasad9580 One of the major problems is the mindset shift of consumerism and the problem the current capitalist system that demands we buy more and more things to help power economy's. I have no idea of the answer but this is surely one problem needing to be understood and mindset changed - do we need 5 Tv's in 1 house or a new phone every year? which uses natural resources for example. (PS I'm not a left wing communist).

They also said California had the largest lithium ion battery when SA Australia has the largest
Isn't it amazing that humans even 30 years ago couldn't imagine that one day a computer(our phones) would be in everyone's pocket. There were many thoughts that it is not possible but it happened. Similarly, in the coming 20 years we might actually discover cleaner and more efficient energy that we are now not able to find.

@@paulmahoney7619 I've often thought about how if fusion becomes a reality since the major 'fuel' would probably be seawater they could build massive fusion reactor/desalination plants... imagine desalinating so much water for cheap due to fusion that you could fill large inland/underground fresh water reservoirs. I mean, this would be ideal in places like California and other coastal states/nations

The lake battery mentioned in this video is in Virginia, but Irelands has one too; Turlough Hill water turbine powerplant. RealEngineering recently made an explanational video about the engineering behind it, very interesting!

These are being used throughout the World, actually much more common than pop culture would allow.
@@sequoia22I've spent most of my life in Virginia and it blew my mind when I learned about this on Ted-Ed. They never taught us about these lakes in school. But I guess they didn't tell us because it doesn't fit this region's coal obsession.

When the narrator mention lake,, I suddenly remember Turlough Hill in Ireland.
Coolest battery design I've seen is a flywheel battery. Basically you use energy to spin a cylinder in a vacuum, and when you need energy you use the cylinder's momentum to create electricity. There's such incredible amount of energy stored in those things it's crazy.

It makes me so happy that people are getting so creative and unorthodox with batteries. I was amazed to hear about the skyscraper battery, and the spit activated battery. Spit seems odd, but when explained suddenly makes perfect sense, and it’s great.

@@AaronChristopher869 Efficiency of this crane system depends on difference of height that block will be moved. Bottom blocks will have lesser energy transfer than top blocks.
When blocks are put down from top locations they need to be spread around that increase lead and horizontal movements only adds to inefficiency.
Then there is issue of balancing of loosely stacked blocks due to wind, non vertical alignment of block etc.

Thorium is awesome. But it’s not a battery, it is a source. Batteries are reversible stores of energy. Thorium is a one-way fission reaction, turning heavier atoms into lighter ones.
Rather than a battery it's more like a generator
While i am a huge fan of thorium reactors, they're not really a "battery". A battery is a means of storing energy for release on demand, not a source of energy. A nuclear reactor, thorium or otherwise, is a source of energy only. I mean sure in theory it might be possible to use some kind of crazy fusion reactor (aka, core-collapse supernovae) to remake thorium fuel again from it's spent byproducts... but something tells me that's not the kind of readily useable tech that we are likely to see any time in the next 1000 years.. if ever... lol

(it requires that the thing being levitated is in a medium and together they need to be in a gravitational field.) look up how sound waves fall up... or the "levitating" upside down boat experiments... really, to an extent this is basically what you see when you shake a pan of rocks and sand... the small sand grains go down, pushing the large rocks up, even if the density of the rocks is greater than the density of the sand grains. (to an extent)

@@Nnm26 nuclear fusion reactors blowing up is very unlikely because the reaction that takes place in fusion would simply stop if energy flow is cut off. In nuclear fission, chain reactions are much more likely even when energy is reduced, this makes them more dangerous

I love watching these videos. All these sustainable ideas he talks about are riddled with flaws and proven not to work yet he talks about them like they are viable. They are not!
I think that it is possible to use the sea waves to produce electricity. I mean they are moving all the time, day and night. I imagine things like walls around the shore pushing vertical plates like walls towards the shore that may rotate gears to produce energy and the recoil after the water pulls back.

There are many ways that a sky scraper can be used to generate electricity. One day all the windows of a skyscraper will be solar powered cells, capturing the energy of the sun while being see through at the same time. The tops of skyscrapers are windy so put a lot of windmills up there. Also, instead of a water mill put a sand mill inside the skyscraper. This means have tons of purified grains of sand held in a chamber at the top of the skyscraper and have the sand pour down until it hits a sand mill. This is just like a water mill but instead of water turning the mill, the gravity of sand does it instead. Below the sand mill is a funnel catching the sand and below the funnel is another sand mill catching the sand and forcing the sand mill to spin. This process is repeated all of the way to the ground. These funnels and sand mills are gigantic with tons of sand going through them constantly. Attached to each sand mill is are electric generators producing massive amounts of electricity. At the bottom of the skyscraper is a chamber to hold the purified sand. Some of the electricity generated powers an industrial strength but efficient vacuum system that sucks the sand back to the top chamber of the skyscraper. It may need to do this in stages until the sand makes it to the top. Because of the efficent vacuum system and because of the numerous sand mills gathering electric energy all the way down...there is a net gain of electricity. These sand mills being turned by sand can also be astecaccly pleasing to the patrons of the skyscraper. The arrangement of the sand mills and funnels can be put behind glass and arranged in artistic ways. The funnels themselves don't have to have a round lip at the top but could be flattened at both ends and also put behind glass panels. The skyscrapers of the future will have shops and restaurants and recreational facilities at the bottom and offices in the middle and hotels and apartments above that. This is so that one could live their entire life in a skyscraper without ever leaving it. There are so many ways that a skyscraper produces electricity that they are essentially a power plant themselves. They can make money my selling power back to the grid.

Y'know you think about this stuff, and wonder why the gov just doesn't devout the most to clean energy. All these amazing ideas, not enough time or funds. The technology warming the Earth took its time to evolve as well; So I think normalizing the weaknesses of clean energy is a better way to get used to them, rather than take a decade to produce one great clean energy source. What I mean is, the more little clean energies, the greater clean energy at the present. Even if it only runs for a couple of hours, implement them in a city in every state and we will be on our way. Not everyone can afford an electric car, but everyone still uses electricity.

I have built windmills as a hobby for over 50 years. I also build small engines, which operate on compressed air. All my windmills compress air and I store it and what I call an air battery, which is nothing more than a giant receiver tank. I don't see why this wouldn't work commercially. There would be much less maintenance, fewer moving parts and everywhere I've ever been there is air.

so, yes, in a way, two lakes set up to ":store" energy could be called a battery. Those things you put in electric devices are electric cells. If you have two or more in th3e device, you have ONE battery.

I just finished binge watching almost all of teds vids and this came up lol.
The far fetch solution is Thorium-based power plants, before we find a better way for harvesting energy directly from the Sun aside from photovoltaic cells (the cleanest solution so far.)
That crane solution is unfeasible compared to the actual "hydraulic" batteries, it demands a lot of maintenance and generates a lot of unrecyclable material (concrete blocks) amongst other issues.

Home UPS system, but connect with the internet. Meantime the UPS will sync with the generator factory. Which everyone in the city had their own battery. Because of the data synced, each UPS will be able to charge in a different timeline/occupation. So it will significantly help the due to power usage peaking and power supply shortage.

What is the energy loss of the lake battery? How efficient is it?
Nice video. Few notes though: that skyscraper builder failed and was never better than water/lakes. There are many other solutions, compressed and/or cooled air, underwater pressure, non litium batteries, etc. Grid needs very different properties than handheld devices, the only reason for litium is the economies of scale. Also nuclear batteries are actually power sources not batteries, you cant recharge them.
