So Many People MISUNDERSTAND This Passage! Allow Me To Explain "The Rich Young Ruler".

  • In this video, we examine a passage that is commonly cited to assert that salvation is conditioned upon keeping the commandments. Why did the Lord refer this young ruler to the law? What's the purpose of the law specific to salvation? I pray this commentary provides clarity and dispels any confusion concerning this subject. God bless! - OD

To the Jewish population at that time, a rich ruler would have been considered to be very blessed by God. They believed that a person must keep the law, follow all holy days, and over all be a Godly person in order to have so much. So when Jesus tells them it is impossible for a "Rich" person to enter into the kingdom of God......well, you can imagine the minds he must have blown.

Another insight about this young man who sought his own righteousness - I believe it's clear he thought he already had it and was looking for affirmation. He'd likely heard of Jesus' teaching (and John's) but was rich, young, influential. To the ancient near-eastern mind (and even today), such a person would be seen as obviously having God's favor already. God makes the favored rich and influential. He had likely kept the commandments "perfectly" which includes proper offerings for sin. Even the Orthodox Christian church today believes in the perfect keeping of the law through confession and communion, not sinlessness. And, this man had this wealth and influence at a relatively young age. When Jesus told him to go and sell it all and give the proceeds away, he was telling the young man to get rid of the exact things that he believed proved he was favored by God already. And riches and influence are good, or at least morally neutral. So, the lesson is about how our own understanding is suspect. Our own sense of our good needs to be on the table, too. And, even things that ARE good and right need to be on the table when it comes to surrender to the Savior.

Very good. The rich young man sought to justify himself before God, and he could not. No one can keep all the law and all the commandments. We are called to throw ourselves on God's mercy by trusting in Jesus, because He made full satisfaction for our debt of sin.

The rich young ruler didn’t change his mind about Jesus but instead rejected Jesus as God. Jesus responded, “Why do you call me good “master”, only God is good?” The ruler acknowledged the goodness of Jesus but wasn’t willing to accept him as God. He saw him as “master”, but not as “God”. Since the ruler didn’t change his mind about Jesus, Jesus sent him back to “the law”. When the ruler claimed he had fulfilled “the law”, Jesus raised the standard of the law to break him, to drive him to his knees, to show him his need for the very savior he was rejecting. The ruler didn’t repent. He didn’t change his mind about Jesus and walked away sad and lost.

Jesus was not teaching salvation by giving but he was demanding that this young man give Him first place.

I think it is also a type pointing to the end times when people will have a choice to accept the mark of the beast and have a normal live with their riches and wealth, where they will renounce Christ just like this young ruler turned away from Jesus and decided his wealth is more important than following Jesus. That's why Jesus said it will be very difficult for a rich person to go to heaven and Jesus said there is no greater love than to lay down your life for someone else, just like Jesus did it for us while we were still sinners.... now it will be our turn to do it for Jesus.

I have no seminary degree and never considered myself worthy or called of being a pastor. How is it that i came to this theological understanding of the rich young ruler that this video expressed while I have heard well known pastors with theology degrees get this so different? To me its obvious what Jesus was getting at. Again, its as if Free Grace Theology understands scripture at a deeper level. I came to Free Grace Theology by my own study and recognized what was being said. And using logic. Faith is not a work and we are thus saved apart from works Rom 3:28 and 11:6. Thats the end of it folks, is it not? If people want to insist on works, your argument seems to be with the likes of the Apostle Paul and not free grace theology. I cant read it any other way. During his life on earth, Jesus also ministered under the old testament. The scripture is just as clear about this in Hebrews 9:15-17.
“For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.” - Hebrews 9:17
Since a testament is of force only “after men are dead”, then this means the new testament could not begin until after the death of Jesus. Jesus died in the very end of his earthly ministry as recorded in Matthew 27:50, Mark 15:37, Luke 23:46, and John 19:30.
If “while the testator liveth” the new testament is of no strength, then Jesus’ birth, life, and ministry on earth were all old testament.
This goes a long way to explain why Jesus instructed men to offer sacrifices (Matt 8:4), taught the law of Moses (Matt 19:17; Matt 23:1-2); frequented the Jewish temple; separated from Gentiles (Matt 10:5; Matt 15:24); and participated in Israel’s holy days.
He ministered on earth under the old testament! The new testament had not yet been dedicated by his death.
It is popularly thought by self proclaimed new testament Christians that they follow Jesus in his earthly ministry (the red letter books), but in following Jesus in his earthly ministry they are following Jesus under the old testament.

Jesus had a ministry on earth under the old testament, and a ministry in heaven for the new testament, but both covenants were made with Israel (Heb 8:8). So, what ministry is Jesus performing today now that Israel is fallen and the new testament is not yet complete (Rom 11:11; Rom 11:25-27).
The answer to this is a ministry from heaven revealed first to the apostle Paul, a special dispensation of grace to all men kept secret since the world began (Eph 3:1-2; Rom 16:25). The revelation of this special ministry contains the message and ministry of the church today.
From heaven Jesus serves as Head of a new creature called the Body of Christ (Eph 2:15; Eph 4:12). In the Body there is neither Jew nor Gentile, the church is not under Israel’s law, nor must the Body wait for Israel’s new testament to be fulfilled.
The Body of Christ performs the ministry of Jesus from heaven preaching the glory and grace of his death and resurrection as salvation offered freely to all. This is the content of Paul’s epistles.
The answer to confusion is right division.

I notice that the rich young ruler, in his own mind, has kept all the commandments that Jesus mentioned, but he still knew that something was lacking. He still felt the need to ask Jesus what more he needed, because (I infer) he knew that keeping the commandments wasn’t enough.

I also remember that, in Zacchaeus’s case, he didn’t have to sell everything and give to the poor. Zack only had to give half of his goods.
Of course, he was also going to repay fourfold anything he had stolen, so he may have effectively destitute himself.
In any case, Jesus’s stories of the rich young ruler and of Zacchaeus bring to mind Jesus’s earlier story of the Pharisee and the Publican praying in the temple, in Like 18:9-14

4:43 Jesus doesn’t say perfection is needed for eternal life in Matthew 19:17. He is simply stating that keeping the commandments of God will aid in his gaining of eternal life. Just as you went on to state, in Matthew 19:26 (THE SAME CHAPTER), Jesus states that perfection is not possible for man, and that through God, all is possible. To me this sounds like Jesus saying we should keep the commandments, and that when we understandably don’t hold up to that standard as humans, God’s grace will save those who believe in him.

Perfection and Holiness is our goal in sanctification, but to say we should try our best and our hardest to be holy and Christ makes up the rest would be faith + works. No one has ever tried their best to be holy or righteous and were able to keep doing so consistently. Rather, we have rest in Christ Jesus knowing he paid the full price. Wanting to be holy is a good thing and we should want it and pursue it, but doing so is building on the foundation that is already Christ. Having faith in Jesus is the only requirement for salvation.

I agree that you cannot earn your way into heaven by good works but I’ve got another concern with the rich young ruler passage itself. It’s clear that Jesus is highlighting the rich man’s inadequacy in the eyes of god by asking him if he’s held up the Ten Commandments. But then Jesus commands him to sell his things and then follow Jesus. So in order for the rich man to be saved he has to sell all his things and then follow Jesus like the disciples did? I’m hung up on the fact Jesus told him to do something like sell all his things before he could be saved. If someone could offer some insight that would be great.

Many scholars cite that the "Rich young ruler" was Mark. The guy who left his robe and ran off naked into the woods at Jesus' arrest is also said to have been Mark. He was very wealthy, had a lot of stuff, it says, "He went away sad," but many say he later returned "secretly" after a change of heart. For anyone, praying this all helps. If there’s any “ammo” here that’s either wanted or needed, go for it. As Scripture implies, “Freely you have received, freely give”:
Since it’s a public setting and just so everyone’s aware, as of the time of Matthew 5 (first Sermon on the Mount - the PUBLIC one), Jesus had not yet been to the cross which means everyone in attendance was still under the 613 rules of that now-obsolete Mosaic Law. (The PUBLIC one can be found in Matthew 5:1-Matthew 7:29 and was on the Mount of Beatitudes. The PRIVATE one can be found in Matthew 24:3-25:46 and was on the Mount of Olives. That private one is also commonly referred to as the “Olivet Discourse”.)
There was, as of yet with each, no “Calvary”, no “Resurrection”, no “Ascension” and no “Pentecost”. Galatians 4:4-5 is helpful in that area - “...born under the Law”. Matthew 22:36 is also helpful in that area - “...teacher, what is the greatest commandment IN THE LAW?”
That’s also why it’s implied many times by Jesus during that first Sermon on the Mount: “You say...but I say...”

    A) Pretty good exegesis of this passage. Much more might be said but it's enough that we recognize that
    1) this period is the time of Grace alone for salvation from sin but the Gospel of the Kingdom time in which lifestyle + faith was essential for remission of sins, involving repentance and baptism for such remission. Therefore, the rich man missed eternal life heaven not because of riches but because of his to
    a) acknowledge his neediness (in sin) and to
    b) surrender to God's promise of cleansing to those willing to do make such a commitment.
after Paul's commission by the ascended Jesus (His last and superseding instruction to mankind) simple trust in God's promised salvation (sins full forgiveness and eternal life dedicated to being an agent of God) is available and will be until Jesus comes to take out of here his completed church with Him to heaven.
ASIDE: Jesus is King, but of the Jews not of the Church.
True, Jesus is creator-God so qualifies as King but not so much in the Biblical sense which is more about ruler and judge. He is my savior and I've been made a part of the Body of Christ" an organism that answers directly to its head, the Lord Jesus. PTL!

Amen 🙏 brother in Christ ✝️ God bless
When people read Matthew 19 in the Holy Bible (Word Of God), people need to pay attention to what Matthew 19:26 in the Holy Bible (Word Of God) says because Matthew 19:26 in the Holy Bible (Word Of God) says 26. But Jesus beheld them, and with men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
If Salvation (Everlasting Life) were a process, reward and costly then this would be the effort of men and thereby be impossible but, Salvation (Eternal Life) is a one ☝🏿 time event, the gift 🎁 of God and FREE therefore, Salvation (Eternal Life) was the effort of what our Lord Jesus Christ did for us on the cross ✝️ for our sins (The Death, Burial And Resurrection Of Our Lord Jesus Christ) thereby all things are possible.

I'm curious as to why you didn't continue with the chapter???? The rich young ruler walked away exceedingly sorrowful because he was very rich........ and what did Jesus say? You, Oronato should have continued because your self made story would have fallen apart.....
    Luke 18:23-30 NKJV
[23] But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. [24] And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! [25] For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” [26] And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?” [27] But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.” [28] Then Peter said, “See, we have left all and followed You.” [29] So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, [30] who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”
And also this verse makes it clear
    Luke 18:22 NKJV
[22] So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. SELL all that you HAVE and DISTRIBUTE to the POOR, and you WILL have TREASURE in HEAVEN; and come, follow Me.”
WHAT.. WHAT... this says he will have treasure in heaven.. WHY??
because of what Jesus did? That's not what scripture says, scripture says he would have treasure in heaven if HE goes and SELLS what HE HAS and gives it to the poor..... please repent from what you are teaching.....
And in order for the rich young man to do what Jesus suggested he would first have needed to have faith that what Jesus said is true... that's why scripture says by faith so many times.... and I'm not talking about faith alone...faith alone is only once in the whole Bible and that's not in a good way..... James 2:24
We are saved, BY Grace THROUGH faith. Ephesians 2:8. .... not grace alone..
    Or faith alone..... please repent

    I'm still lost!
If "the righteousness that God requires, He himself provides" then for whom does it become difficult for a rich man to get to heaven? Is it God (who provides the righteousness) or the rich man?
How can having riches (permitted by God) prevent a seemingly religious man who follows the law and desires heaven from being saved?
How are faith and riches connected? Why didn't Jesus simply say follow me? If the person chose to keep his riches, does it mean he made it difficult for God to save him (since nobody saves himself)?
Maybe these questions are basic, but I couldn't get the answers from the video. Would appreciate if anyway can elaborate. Thanks.

In the context that the rich are generally filled with pride and don’t think they need help, but salvation is 100% outside of ourselves and in the sacrifice of the body of the Lord Jesus Christ alone. So since salvation is something we cannot earn nor work towards, it is especially difficult for the rich man to grasp. I hope this helps.

“And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that TRUST in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!” Mark 10:24
The rich in this world are often “self-sufficient” and self righteous as demonstrated by this young man. Generally, the poor are much more receptive to rely upon the righteousness of God through faith in Christ alone.

You can make the argument that when Jesus said if you "sell everything you know you shall inherit the kingdom" that he meant to demonstrate that no one can do the law fully because he knew that the man wouldnt do it.
But at the same time Jesus didnt lie when he said that. If that man wouldve sold everything he had and followed Jesus he wouldve inherited the kingdom of God otherwise Jesus was lying. In the book of Acts when the Holy Spirit was poured out to the followers of Jesus everyone sold everything they had and the wealth was distriputed to those in need. Then there was a man and his wife who didnt sell everything but but kept part of their wealth for themselves and when (If I remember correctly it was Peter) found out about this he said to them why hav you tempted the Spirit of God and they literally died because they didnt sell everything they had.

I think you're right. But I'm not so convinced the rich young ruler "failed" here -- at least not permanently. I think Jesus did this to set him up to receive the gospel.
I mean Jesus told him to "go and sell all his possessions and then come follow me." When he left, technically the ruler was doing what he was told. Jesus told him to "go". The ruler did not fail at all here, except that he seemed very sad.
But has God ever told you to do something that made you sad, or angry? Or am I the only one? 😅
"Jesus looked at him and loved him." I think this is the key to the whole story.
Jesus knew the young ruler would walk away sad. _That was exactly what Jesus wanted._ Its as you said. Jesus wanted this man to see firsthand his idolatry of money... and to fall into despair of saving himself.
Jesus knew that heart change would not happen instantly. Its rare that any of us can instantly let go of all our idols -- especially without any help of the Holy Spirit. So Jesus left the ruler to struggle with this command for a time. This was the Lord’s loving work of humbling his soul... because the message of the Gospel was not far from being revealed.
I really don't believe Jesus meant to condemn this man. He did it to open the man's eyes, that he might be saved by faith in Jesus, crucified and risen for us.
For my money, Jesus Christ saved this man's soul by what He did here.
I think that's why Mark made special mention of this: "Jesus looked at him and loved him."

    • @davidbusciglio5529
      @davidbusciglio5529 8 месяцев назад +1

I believe you're exactly right. No doubt Jesus, the all omniscient God in the flesh, who SO loved the world (the whole wide world), wanted this young man, who at the time was blinded/steeped in his own self-satisfied sense of self righteousness, to be brought to despair (his noted sadness, by lesson of this story) and ultimately the eventual humility of seeing, thru Holy Spirit conviction, his own morally bankrupt state (that in reality he could NOT ever meet the demands of the law).
Jesus' words to him were intended to get him on that path of thought to potentially seek the salvation that only Jesus ALONE was soon to provide. Based on the story/the specifics of what has been revealed, we can't know if the RYR ever actually came to " the end of himself " and trusted the Savior but he very well may have.

Jesus left the two greatest commandments out when he said unto the rich young ruler thou knowest the commandments, he didn't say to him: [1] Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, this is the first and great commandment, [2] And the second is like unto it, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself, on these two commandments "hang the law and the prophets" that's the main reason he saith those words unto the man and he said all these things have I done from my youth up only 8 out of 10 commandments, those who live by the law must keep the whole law, willing to justify himself, he agreed with the other commandments but forgot the first two greatest commandments, that's how Jesus was trying him, by saying the 3-10 commandments. So he was not justified because he didn't keep the whole that's why Jesus saith unto him sell everything and follow me "for eternal life" The rich young ruler loved his money more than he loved God and his neighbor.
