    Did you win the Tire Size Lotto? If not, what other tires are you considering?

      One of the smallest KO2 sizes is right for my Volvo XC70, probably one of the less purchased. Probably going to end up going with that KO2, as not many tires are offered in the right size, as you alluded to.

      I wish BFG would offer a 255/85R17 like Mickey Thompson does, as that is a great pizza cutter for overlanders.

      The KO2 was the king of vintage sizes like my 33X10.5R15. I love that tire size and want to keep it. I hope they keep the wide size range for us with older rigs. We deserve new tire tech too!

    Excited that I was able to get KO3s (285/70/17) for my LC200 3 weeks ago at Discount Tire in Vista, CA - they said it was the first set they've put on. This video was the reason I went that direction vs KO2s. My new-to-me LC200 had OEM Bridgestone Duelers and so I can't comment on the KO3s vs. KO2s. I will say that they run very smooth on tarmac with no more rumble noise than the much less capable Duelers. So far so good.

    I have a set of those on my tacoma and have about 5k miles on them so far, but I've tested them in mud, sand, snow, highway driving, etc. already and can confirm that they are decent at all of it. Performed great in a snowstorm a couple months ago by getting me to places my buddies could not get to at all and also enabled me to pull out an HD Chevy that found himself in a ditch.

    Really want a 285/85r17! I have been running 315/70r17 KO2s and have beat them up severely! I love them but want to try a pizza cutter. This new size would be just a little taller, have more contact in a longer pattern when aired down, less rolling resistance in slush and more down pressure on ice/snow.

    • @pawezieja3806
      @pawezieja3806 12 дней назад +1

      Pizza cutters are 255/80r17. I run this size on my FJ, except the look they are excellent.

    • @michaelreed7040
      @michaelreed7040 11 дней назад

      @@pawezieja3806 ya, even narrower would be good but I would loose an inch of ground clearance with those dimensions, 285s are pizza cutters compared to 315s, 255/90r17 would give me the same clearance, but 285/85r17s seem like a pipe dream I can't imagine them making something like a 90 or 100 series. The side wall would have to be really stiff and I don't know how they would handle?

    • @jeffmiller2433

      I run 285/75/17’s on my Ram 1500. I have zero regrets running a skinny tire. More ground clearance, less rolling resistance, more bump compliance. A 35” skinny would be interesting.

    BFG has been owned by Michelin for over 30 years. Michelin invented the radial tire and also lead the industry in adopting segmented molds instead of clam shell molds. You can see the clam shell seam on the KO2, I would have to see a KO3 to see which mold style it uses. Segmented molds give a truer round tire and balance much better. Michelin only uses segmented molds for their branded tires.

    Love the clear reasoning on your channel! Please explain how to think of the different road-driving MPG consequences of putting bigger tires on your off-road vehicle. Which makes a bigger difference when you put on bigger rubber?
    1. rolling weight/heavier tire?
    2. taller diameter / angle of momentum change?
    3. width, wider contact patch more rubber on the road, wider tire pushing through the wind.
    4. extra lifted height of your vehicle pushing through the wind, from the tire itself, and from any lift you added to clear the tire?
    Assuming the same (AT/TA) tread design and compound, which of these four factors makes the biggest difference for MPG, torque, and performance? Which of them do we over-estimate or under-estimate? And which factors am I forgetting? Thanks! Off-road forums are full of discussions about this and lot of disagreement and misunderstanding (plus people telling you it's stupid to think about MPG for an off-road vehicle on the road, haha). Thanks for a great video. You mention tire-weight consequences in your tire reviews, but it would be great to see you address the big factors question generally rather than regarding a specific tire models.

    KO2 had problems balancing, bought a set in 2019 and 3 of 4 had to be replaced as Discount Tires was road force balance the tires. And I had no issues during those 5 years. Again, have tire shop road force balance and make sure they don't exceed the max balance weights.

    Love your videos. Thank you for these!
    So, I've been running AT4Ws the past week. LT 265 / 70 / 17. E-rated. 53 lbs.
    My previous tires were KO2s LT 275 / 65 / 18. E-rated. 56 lbs.
    I went from 18" 4th Gen 4runner limited wheels/rims to 17" 5th Gen 4Runner TRD Off-road wheels.
    Logically, I thought I'd see AT LEAST the same MPG as the KO2s with the AT4Ws.
    Instead, I'm seeing some weird things. (granted it's only been like 50 miles).
    - When I first start driving, my avg MPG drops considerably. KO2s never did that.
    - At MAX, my average gets up to 17.5mpg and at that, only on the highway. The KO2s would average 19-20mpg on highways.
    I'm highly considering swapping the AT4Ws for the KO3s.
    BUT, I'm concerned I may end up back at the same MPG place.
    (I offroad about 15% of the year. The rest is on road, as my daily driver. For me, MPG = money.)
    Thoughts on this / recommendations? Appreciate your feedback.

    • @johnsierramusic
      @johnsierramusic 16 дней назад

      (Oh, and the AT4W STILL only has a 2-ply sidewall. That's the part that gets me - drop in MPG for a worse sidewall compared to a 3ply KO3?)

    I’m so torn between keeping my stock 22 wheels and getting 302/55/22 but unsure if it affects tranny or gearing? Also weight?
    Or going down to a 20in wheel and bigger tire for extra sidewall and keeping stock diameter to not upset OEM settings.

    Discount Tire just ordered my 275/70-18 and claim they will arrive Monday 5/6. Fingers crossed that's correct as the sheet indicates August for that size. If they don't get them, I'll have to go another route as I've eked as much as I can out of my KO2. Would HATE to go another direction, but BFG have taken way way way too long on this tire and I don't want to pay the same amount for replacement set of KO2 if the KO3 is coming available. BFG have royally messed this up IMO. I've had KO2 on all my LandCruisers and they are all coming due. Without the KO3 option, I'd consider going to Falken since they are widely available.

      How do you go from KO2 to Falken? Just curious. Falken is not a popular tire in my area and opinion. From watching numerous videos online. It seems like Nitto seems to be the most popular among the off road crowd. If you don’t do much off roading then I guess it doesn’t matter. I have always had BFG MT’s on all my four wheel drive vehicles. They have worked well in the snow, sand, off road and on highway wet or dry. I’m over 50k miles on KO2’s on my 2018 Tundra. I’m going to need to replace them in the Summer/Fall before snowfall. I live in Western Colorado. I’ve been happy with the KO2’s but I missed on the size lotto. 285/55/20’s. 🤷🏽. If I can’t get that size (or substitute) maybe I can fit the 275/65/20’s. If not, I guess it’s Falken AT3W’s for me. I’ll need the 3Peak Mountain Snowflake.

    So far I’m loving my KO3’s. The true test will be there traction on wet roads. Very quiet, didn’t realize how loud my Ridge Grapplers had gotten. And they look sharp as hell, love the raised white letters and aggressive sidewall. They look much better than the KO2’s. Hope I can hold out till August so I can put these on my Bronco.

    Was able to pick up a set of 285/70/17 load C through discount… pita. Ordered online, got called they were not available in all black, was told they were available with white lettering. Got that set ordered. Had “them”installed on a rainy day where I failed to check before leaving…KO2s. Called them the next day and told them specifically wanted the KO3s and the sales rep said they had em stock with white letters when he called me initially. magically a week later they found me a set in a warehouse somewhere.
    Coming from AT3s they are pretty comparable in dry and wet road conditions. Far superior to KO2s(previous set and the new set I had on for a week) Haven’t had a chance to take em off pavement yet. They do ride a bit rougher than AT3s though. About 1 month on them.

    I bought my 1st truck and it came with the KO2s from factory (ranger raptor). I am shocked, how the tires are slippery on wet roads even at mild temperature + how hard they get at freezing temperature.
    can the KO3 be considered as a safer choice for wet conditions, or should I look elswhere, like falkens, etc.?

    I'm guessing these are more similar in compound and manufacturing to the All Terrain TA. They have those dimples too. I got a set of those because I got tired of waiting for the K03, and they are actually better in snow and rain. The balancing was not great though, I had to send back a tire.

      I've only been on the street. It's too early yet, but so far, I'm not seeing a difference, but I have to believe the milage has to be less at least a little. I had it on gravel for about a quarter mile with a commercial lawn mower on a trailer. I had to go up a 30% grade from a stop. In 2 wheel drive, no spinning. Once on the street, it seems to throw out stones like the 2's. I was hoping that it would be less. Still ecstatic about them and they were $2 cheaper than the 2's. That never happens nowadays.@@andrewwilliamson4306

    Looks like my size will be available in August. Thing is with the previous inconsistencies , I almost want to wait a bit for after market reviews before i pick a set of these up . The closest challengers to these are going to be the at4ws for my TRX, but they are HEAVY .... another thing im wondering about is the speed rating on these tires. With the at4ws they have a d rated tire that goes up to the 118 mph rating , but I havent tried falkens yet. I could go with the Goodyears OEMS but ive heard mixed reviews about those . Im 95% highway / daily driving these , but want to keep the ability of using it off road if need be.

    I am going to be needing new tires around the end of the year. Question for me was stick with the K02 or move to something else for our '21 Ranger. I love the way the K02 look and had zero complaints in the sand or towing. Really the only "issues" I have with the K02 have been on-road. Rain performance seems weak and when dry weather taking off enthusiastically can break the tires loose maybe a little easier than I would like. K03 may actually solve these concerns. Either way, K02 have treated me well so I could live with another set too.

    Do you think BFG improved the onroad performance, at the expense of offroad performance, to give room for a new hybrid AT or rugged terrain model? That market is surging and it would perfectly explain a slight change in mission/specification.
