Brings back great memories. Built these as a assembler and later became a trans repair mechanic on them. You didn't show the fun (annoy) part of putting the center support together or the 3rd clutch. lol Last mechanical valve body transmission.Great video ! Proud Allison Transmission retiree !
Excellent. Having done transmission work myself, it's easy to see Richard takes his work seriously. His tools, shop layout, and procedures all speak to his enthusiasm for quality.
That was a very informative and entertaining video! Thank you for recording and sharing that build and all that you learned from it. I worked at that trade for 20 years and was pleased to see the professionalism and care that the shop crew put into your transmission. Excellent job and a great advertisement for their company.
Glad you shared some of the cost involved in the mechanical work you had done. Folks can save money on doing the interior build of a bus build. However, when it comes to mechanical work you can't cut corners. Anyone looking into doing a build definitely must have some funds set aside towards breakdowns. Safe & happy travels :)
We are looking to find someone to do this for us! We just bought a 2003 international with a 545 that is toast. Stoked to see someone who actually did it. We are still looking in Washington state. My husband and I are selling our home and taking our children on the road for a better way. Thanks again for this video. Holly
I had a transmission rebuilt in my semi and it cost about $13000. A new one would have been about $15000. But this was many years ago. Great job and loved your video.
Excellent information in both videos. I now have a better understanding of what all goes into an automatic transmission. My buddy back in western NY specializes in transmissions. If he ever gets set up to work on big rigs I'll share his info for those on that side of the country
My flexplate broke while in Fl. (from Pa.) I had a rebuilt 545 put in at that point! I know what an ordeal it can be while on the road! Pro-trans in Deland Fl. did me good back in 2006! It is a good feeling while traveling to know you have a strong transmission! That's a nice upgrade you made $$. That flu bug this yr. was a bad one!!
Awesome video Richard is totally awesome mechanic. If you got a bus or rv or motor home this is a must see videos. That trany is night and day to the old one ☝️ awesome job Richard. 🛠🛠🇨🇦
Oh Yeaaaa!!! Just like a new trans! That's how it's done, let the experts do it the right way. Otherwise we may be on the side of the road and I wouldn't want to rastle with that thing more than once!
That was an awesome video there are lots of great mechanics but most pass on transmission work and send it out I was highly impressed by how he carried himself and the dino in the video. All it takes one bad seal and caput no guesswork there if you rebuild and just install you never know. I am fascinated by how these people invent this stuff this was your best video on the bus not to take anything away from Badge I know he knows his stuff. we love ya Badge
Don't know how you found this shop but they are awesome. Almost as clear as if Badge was telling it. Good to let others understand that genies are not always up on these transmission projects.😂
The only thing I'd do different is presoak the clutches. Thats an Important step that was sadly missed in this instalation. Otherwise great instalation.
Hello, I'm new to buses, but I own a 91 bluebird with a 5.9 and AT545. Just bought it. I drove it 1,000 miles home. I'd like to replace the AT545 at some point with something that's got a 5th and 6th gear. Everyone in my "skoolie" groups is talking about $5k-$9k to rebuild a unit, let alone modify with a different transmission. You said something about "the transmission, I was quoted 16, 17." Does that mean you were quoted $1,600 or $1,700 labor for the rebuild AND the installation?? If so, I'm going to high tail it down to Arizona and see these guys! I'd settle for an MT643 if it offers lockup for highway driving and can be had for such a great value!
Jax the name for the bus! ""Lucky" if you had not bought it she probably would have been scraped. They knew the trans was going. They had to have known!
Great videos as always Jax. If you want about 15/20hp, better fuel economy ((2-3mpg) and lower exhaust gas temps, remove your muffler. Straight pipes that long will not be really loud at all. Your turbo will spool faster also, resulting in a faster power curve. Also, take your bus to an International shop. They can re-rate your engine, I suggest 20%. About $250 or less..
I wish to swap my AT 545 for an MT 643 as well. Have you noticed a difference in your driving/handling/power/gas mileage since swapping? And yes, these guys are seriously educated on transmissions. I wish I lived closer to them as I want the same service for my Skoolie.
Hey Jack’s great video brother !!!!what motor do you have? I’ve been having a 1993 a national short bus with the international DT 360 motor with the Allison ad 545 transmission for about 12 years using it for the last 10 years as a private party bus, start taking her cross-country to festivals/camping .. knock on wood my 545 tranny runs great top speed 62 at 2600rpm’s maxed out running for hours and I’m getting about 10 miles and a half per gallon of fuel did you see significant change in speed and also fuel economy with a swap? I do appreciate your brother let me know many thanks and stay awesome
nice upgrade. just wondering how it shifts for you. mine really winds out in first gear and then quickly gets 2 and 3 and 4 . I am thinking the governor? or throttle adjustment? or is that normal. mine is a 79 wanderlodge with a cat 3208
Do you have any video or info on how to Remove/install the PTO gear on the forward clutch drum of a AT545? Can you tell me if it is ok to use a dab of Permatex® Automatic Transmission RTV Gasket Maker in the Pump assembly gasket?
had the flu worked through it mostly got rid of it over the weekend whent to work again got the sniffles over the next weekend so took some nasal spray i bought for the last flu and had the flu again a week after that.......... hope im now rid of it definetely trew away the nasal spray must have had some microbes left in the stuff .... lesson learned the lockup converter should save you some fuel as all the power from the motor gets transfered to the rearaxle without slipping , the lack of slippage should keep the transmissionoil temperatures down too (wish make the trans last longer ) hope you have them instal a transmission oil temp gauge in the dash and keep an eye on that on the uphill bits or when towing
hey can you tell me what the part numbers are for the flex plate and that SAE2 adapter spacer ring for the T444E.. I swapped an allison 1000 into my T444E, but a buddy wants to do the 545 to 643 swap and needs the part numbers for the flex plate and that SAE2 spacer...
I have a 3116 cat I swapped my at545 to mt643 I had no pressure and it did not spin at all so I bought a 2nd mt643 same story , u have any clue what could be the problem??
Help me please!!!! I have a t444e with an at545 and I need to change it to an mt643. I am literally having a terrible time with mountains. What was the total cost of this for you?
From what I have been reading the main weak point is that it doesn't have overdrive. So like the AT545 it has a top gear ratio of 1 to 1 just like the AT545. But it locks up the torque converter so you get better top speed and MPG. A really good pairing would be to do the tranny swap to MT643 and also swap the rear diff gears out to a taller ratio. So for example my diff has 4.78 ratio and I could swap that down to a 4.11 ratio and with a tranny swap see a much higher top speed. After that you'd be looking at modifying your engine to get more power and RPM.
Richard did a great job explaining. I never knew that there is so many pieces in a transmission.
You didn't see 2 pumps and valve body pre assembled.
Some have 250-300 parts.
Brings back great memories. Built these as a assembler and later became a trans repair mechanic on them. You didn't show the fun (annoy) part of putting the center support together or the 3rd clutch. lol Last mechanical valve body transmission.Great video ! Proud Allison Transmission retiree !
A super series, Jax. This transmission video should be sold to a cable company. The quality and explanation is fantastic! Congratulations!
This is one of your best videos ever, and Richard is a natural teacher. As a mechanic’s daughter, I have a whole new respect for his abilities.
Excellent. Having done transmission work myself, it's easy to see Richard takes his work seriously. His tools, shop layout, and procedures all speak to his enthusiasm for quality.

He was a big help and if I can help him in return, then I’m happy. Also, people love referrals and this is one.
What a mechanical wonder, and what a wonderful thing to have these folks who know how to make it work! It was very satisfying watching it go together.
Uncle Mo 100% yes
One of your best videos ever. Not only is this guy remarkable but he is a real animal also

Thanks Jax.... I'm a car guy and that was fun watching a trans rebuild.. Thumbs up ! Great Vid...
My wallet still hurts lol
Really appreciate you taking the time to record this. Very interesting.

I had a transmission rebuilt in my semi and it cost about $13000. A new one would have been about $15000. But this was many years ago. Great job and loved your video.
Glad to see your backup and running .. Now let the new adventures begin again
Mark Wilson hopefully soon
I'd feel very confident with that transmission.
tbirdracefan me too. Runs great

My buddy back in western NY specializes in transmissions. If he ever gets set up to work on big rigs I'll share his info for those on that side of the country
Wish I had found someone like that to rebuild my 4Runner transmission. I enjoyed watching this rebuild.
Carol Reay thanks for watching
excellent job this really is from a lot of experience from what I can see with Richard
Great people. Nice to find someone who is honest and does good work. Hope it gives you many reliable years of use.

He’s a good dude.
"That's the way it should be done!"
Reminds me of Badge, the voice of experience and confidence 😎
That was brilliant, thank you so much for taking the time to film this, I learnt a LOT!
Oh Yeaaaa!!! Just like a new trans! That's how it's done, let the experts do it the right way. Otherwise we may be on the side of the road and I wouldn't want to rastle with that thing more than once!
Nice wall art
I wish this very good transmission guy is close to me in Dallas!
Hi Jax, Richard is awesome and as you said very talented. Cool one more step complete to your dream bus. xx

This is way out of my expertise, but I find it fascinating.
Don't know how you found this shop but they are awesome. Almost as clear as if Badge was telling it. Good to let others understand that genies are not always up on these transmission projects.😂
Teo thanks to the internet, good people can be found.
AWESOME!!!! Whoever hit the thumbs down ISN’T VERY SMART...my opinion 😳
Thanks Jax and Richard❣️❣️❣️
Hope all is okay Jax!!! Have been missing Ur videos❣️
The only thing I'd do different is presoak the clutches. Thats an Important step that was sadly missed in this instalation. Otherwise great instalation.
Impressive work by an expert.
very well qualified professional

Wow - did he make that look easy!
Jax the name for the bus! ""Lucky" if you had not bought it she probably would have been scraped. They knew the trans was going. They had to have known!
I got lucky, the school district had already upgraded before I got it :D
And added a trans cooler bigger than the radiator in my car

John Clamshell SP thanks for the tip. I’m talking to a performance company. Will report back.
John Clamshell SP 100% agree straight pipes sound better lower the e.g.t and will help the turbo quite a bit!!
And Rush trucking by me wants $250 for a re-rate reprogram the ECM.@@Byepolar619
Great video Jax !!
WOW I really enjoyed that. So much to know!
How did you find that bellhousing spacer for the mt643?
Que buen video deverda me gustó mucho que bien lo hacen los felicito por ese vídeo
Great job, How much does this cost? I also have the AT545
Outstanding video

I hear safety dance playing.
That Bellhousing spacer plate was darmn near impossible to find.. I ended up doing a Built allison 1000 6 speed into mine instead of a 643..
yo - jax. FANTASTIC video. you got lucky in finding this tranny guy. if i ever need such, hope i can make it there. thanks.
nice upgrade. just wondering how it shifts for you. mine really winds out in first gear and then quickly gets 2 and 3 and 4 . I am thinking the governor? or throttle adjustment? or is that normal. mine is a 79 wanderlodge with a cat 3208
that Dyno sounds like my Vitamix blender
what is the name of the workshop that made your automatic transmission?
The new trany is so shiny😘 The red, green, white bus on your sign off, are you painting your bus that way? Just curious.
Tree Notion that was actually made years before I started this idea. It’s a chicken bus from my Guatemala backpacking trip.
@@JaxAustin ha ha! A chicken bus? Hope you feel better.
Excellent video!👍Thanks!😁
What was the all-in cost of the rebuild and installation?
That was awesome!
Where is the workshop located?
Very interesting
Please you have to do a video just on driving and tell us the top speed and show us how it drives probably on the interstate
Very scary, when he was testing the transmission, lol!! Also, very cool! Thanks for sharing!!!
Straight pipe the exhaust! It will sound sweet!
I do not have that kinda money sitting around lol. RUclipsrs make peanuts
Where are you at? I need this transmission swap now !!
Could you give a cost for the swap please. Or estimate for the swap
Why didn't the clutches get presoaked in oil ?
Do you have any video or info on how to Remove/install the PTO gear on the forward clutch drum of a AT545? Can you tell me if it is ok to use a dab of Permatex® Automatic Transmission RTV Gasket Maker in the Pump assembly gasket?
What engine was in the bus that got the Allison MT 643 transmission
Hi. What is MT 643 control valve body tightening torque to the transmission? Thanks
So cool!
Where you gone fella , you have not been on the socials anywhere,,hope all good
That transmission looks really heavy!
Chris Seliga hundreds of pounds
had the flu worked through it mostly got rid of it over the weekend whent to work again got the sniffles over the next weekend so took some nasal spray i bought for the last flu
and had the flu again a week after that.......... hope im now rid of it definetely
trew away the nasal spray must have had some microbes left in the stuff .... lesson learned
the lockup converter should save you some fuel as all the power from the motor gets transfered to the rearaxle without slipping , the lack of slippage should keep the transmissionoil temperatures down too (wish make the trans last longer )
hope you have them instal a transmission oil temp gauge in the dash and keep an eye on that on the uphill bits or when towing
watahyahknow I have a gauge, and Richard installed a sender
Woop Woop 🙌
I would build a real tough skid plate for tranny pan.
I could see it from front real clear.
25:38 I think we found patient zero!
What engine you going behind with that baby?
just like making lasagne
Nomadic Route 😂
Come on it really does happen that way, geni really do rebuild them.....lol
Bud Sims haha
Love that guy. Jax what editing software do you use? Thanks.
Premiere Pro
It’s not Big Thing! Just Give me your money? LOL ...you better get a second and third job! Good luck!
Does anyone know the part numbers for the new parts they installed for the 643 Allison for the fly wheel etc ?
hey can you tell me what the part numbers are for the flex plate and that SAE2 adapter spacer ring for the T444E..
Quality 😁👍👍
Mt 654 is 4 o 5 speeds?
Help me please!!!! I have a t444e with an at545 and I need to change it to an mt643. I am literally having a terrible time with mountains. What was the total cost of this for you?
Also, we are on insta if interested going_boundless I'd love to see what you think of our build.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
You’re having a terrible time bc the t444e sucks. I wish I had the DT
@@JaxAustin you have the t444e right? If so did the mt643 help you?
Going Boundless it’ll help a little, but the engine is the problem. 4K for a new tranny is throwing money away.
Temp gauge on the wrong inlet, needs to be at the top cooler port not return port.
How much did you pay for the rebuilt/repair and install at this place?
Jax , hi when is your next video due. Miss you on RUclips.
Como se sanbla una caja alison
I have a 545 that shifts 2nd to 3rd several times while driving stops doing it as soon as I let go the accelerator pedal
They can be finicky
@Jax Austin it sounds like the driveshaft snapping several times any ideas what it could be
Is this 4, 5 or 6 speed?
Gracias por tu Respuesta Richard claro que sí te voy ablar!! pero no me aparece el número de teléfono de oficina!!
How much did it cost for the whole thing?
Unfortunately he is not answering how much it cost . Sad !
What are the weak points in the 643?
From what I have been reading the main weak point is that it doesn't have overdrive. So like the AT545 it has a top gear ratio of 1 to 1 just like the AT545.
