I have a confession. I watched your GX460 video from a year ago...and about 2 weeks later, there was a '23 GX460 in Nebula Grey sitting in my driveway. I don't drive much - mine only has like 7,500 miles but it's been an absolute joy to drive.
Honestly, being a GX owner makes me feel like I’m in on a secret other car owners do know about. Hard to explain it just feel special even over the new GX model.
Hey yo! Your GX has windshield wiper defrosters. Use those puppies!! It’s, unfortunately, buried in your infotainment in the climate settings. But they work like dreams. 1:01
😂😂 They are NOT on automatically. However that would be an ingenious thing. But they are handy as hell. I run them nearly any time we get snow. Just wanted you to know! But yeah…they’re buried. Just be emotionally prepared for that every time you go to turn them off. Oh. AND they time out after ~10ish minutes. So…it’s a pain. But love your stuff! Especially the therapy dries and the reviews on the classics you do. They’re so enjoyable! Thanks for the content!!
@@TedwardDrives My 2022 4Runner has the front windshield heater/works great to melt snow & ice freeing up wipers from glass on snow buildup, & especially when freezing rain coats your windshield-and it works completely within 1-2 minutes. It turns off automatically in approx 10 minutes. My 2020 4 Runner didn't have that-it was standard on my 2022 model, so perhaps it appeared on the GX460 about that time frame
Great video as always dude. I just recently purchased a GX 470 (previous generation of the GX 460). For anyone looking for a GX 460 on a budget and wanting real 4x4, 6500 tow capacity, v8, body on frame, nice quiet/smooth ride, a ton of features, and really one of the best utilitarian vehicles you can own, a GX 470 is perfect.
GX470 is a great power plant believed to be more reliable than the GX460, which is known to have some significant leaking coolant and oil issues and potentially more transmission problems than the 470.
Had a white 17 GX460 that we somewhat lovingly called the 'marshmallow'. Rock solid - never had an issue other than a persistent pulling to the right - which the dealer claimed was completely normal.
My f150 always did that since new, dealer also said it was normal and that it was a "safety measure" incase you fall asleep you'll go into the ditch and not oncoming traffic.
Happy Friday and great update video. I have a ‘22 which now has 23,000 miles. Glad to be in California where there’s no rust, and all your logic still applies. I’m very thankful to own this vehicle and also a little bit glad that it’s not “special” like the LC200/LX570 that I really wanted because I don’t have to worry about it!
Agree with your philosophy fully with this truck, and your other vehicle. Had a 2002 & 2015 Sequoia for 13 & 5 yrs respectively. Great vehicles, reliable, but eye watering mpg. Now have 09 Boxster 6Spd Manual & '22 4 Runner LTD. adequate tech, some convenient safety features, but not over the top. No iPad screens, all necessary intuitive function & comfort controls & nothing more. And both reliable with normal maintenance. Different purpose for my enjoyment and utility. Perfect duo.
thing that pisses me off here in the north east is the total overuse of salt when we have mild winters. they put down enough salt for two blizzards for that piddly storm last week. i talked to a dot plow driver and he told me, towns gotta use the snow budget or it gets smaller the next year. great! thanks for rotting our cars out.
Seriously. Visited family a while back and they had the whole town salted like they were expecting 8 feet of snow. No wonder everything rots out in a decade, absolutely ridiculous
Love videos like this. Just chatting and driving... 👌 Same here with the steering wheel going left most of the time (also a new Toyota vehicle). It's just sensitive to the road surface, I guess... But oh boy, it can bug me SO bad sometimes 😅. Just glad the alignment is okay!
I always wanted one of these and it’s remained out of budget, I now watch these videos like a classic relic doing what it was designed to do now that it’s out of production, I have a 2018 GT-R that also now fits that description.
I have an integra type S, and I thought I could get away with it being my only car but with this much snow this year, now I'm highly considering the GX
Interesting thing about you having to pull to the left a little bit while driving straight. The same thing is happening to my dads (our family) LC Prado from 2005. Alignment is fine, tyres are new Michelins and pressures are correct. Also, your Lexus looks like the modern version of that with the nicer interior. Probably built on the similar platform, or some modern version of it. PS I also love having fun with it in the corners, it actually isn't that bad, pretty easy to drive. My first gen Z4 feels like a race car after driving it though lol Great video as always!
Your on point about people need to know how their vehicle reacts on the snowy or icy roads. I went through drivers ed in January in Michigan many years ago, but I did exactly what you said, testing braking and stopping distance in an empty parking lot. Live in Texas now, it rarely snows, but when it does, many accidents 😮
Mostly due to summer tires. They are terrible below freezing. It make sense to lower the pressure as much as possible. Overinflated summer tire on ice=disaster
I bought a Defender 90 4cyl right around the time you bought this. At 15,500 miles now and I find it interesting comparing your experience to mine in terms of problems reliability etc. especially since we seem to be adding miles at the same rate. Keep the updates coming & happy miles!
@@TedwardDrives so far absolutely nothing I have been lucky with my example… knock on wood! But as with any Rover the older it gets things are bound to happen. Will see how it stands up vs. the Lexus
GX and LX are very sensitive to road deviations as you said. I think it's from their short wheelbase, ~3 degrees front caster spec, and solid rear axle nonadjustable toe angle (thrust angle), leading to constant steering correction at times due to pulling. I've had to deliberately offset the steering center on an older GX once to counteract bad rear thrust to "recenter" the steering wheel even though it was technically centered before. Added a touch of positive caster as well and ended up helping a lot of pulling issues. KDSS is mostly a rock-solid system that rarely has issues. They only really do when tinkerers mess with suspension components, which is common for off-road fans. Then it's a can of worms to fix KDSS.
4:39 love this point on the importance of TIRES! I’m still in high school and to save money my dad bought a pair of “summit” tires for my V60 from Walmart. I had an incident where I was going 10 under (20 mph), hit the brakes decently light, and the car immediately locked up before a corner and I was in a 4 foot deep ditch. Over $6k in damage that could’ve been mitigated by some better rubber.
Now this I called the Number One of reliability, not this GX550 or GX550h those are endless money pits as they age and crappy quality, but with this V8 is completely bulletproof engine and solid built and for luxury and also for a have fun family trip, while a Newer GX550 it will break down frequently and costs over thousands of dollars to fix bearing and overheating engine
I bought my 2023 in April of that year. That December I took it in for an oil change (@1k miles) and the steering wheel was off center 3-5 degrees to the left from that point on. Took it to a Toyota/Lexus specialist to ‘fix’ the alignment twice. It’s still off with me having to hold the wheel slightly leftward on a straight flat road. Just living with it, and yes, I made sure tire pressure was equal on all tires. GX has 4k miles on the odometer. I daily drive my 2002 Miata NB vs the GX.
I was taking mine three times to Pep Boys. Swap left and right tires and let them try again until it is good. Manager was not happy but i dont give two fucks about it. Make it right and you will not see me again. I believe Lexus even did an update on LH and RH front coil springs to combat this issue so it should be quite common issue.
I have a new 23 and have a similar left-side pull. The dealer adjusted the suspension toe/camber, thought it was better, and now it seems to continue. I guess this is not an uncommon issue?
@8:10 I strugled with this for a while, buying cars I didn't "really" need. But at the end of the day there's no need to justify anything to anyone when you do something that makes you happy.
'22 GX here with 19k miles.. warms up fast on these 3 degree mornings this week. I rust proofed the frame with blaster- working well so far. Skipped last year but looking good overall. Thinking about grabbing a 2nd GX ('22 to '23) to balance the miles on both and ensure having one for the rest of my life TBH.
We just got 10" of snow in South Louisiana. With no salt or plows, we didn't have to worry about rust prevention! Too bad we only get this much snow every 50 years...
It is interesting to see the what people have to do to prevent rust. In my case, I set aside an hour on a sunny summer day for an annual visit to the local Krown Rustproofing shop. In its 20th Ontario winter, my car is as solid as the day it left the factory. 😉
@@AmosDohms My car is washed in spring, summer and fall. Once I apply a coat of paste wax to the paint in October, only the rain will wash it until the following spring. I am sure it would not hurt to wash it during the winter but I don't want to spend the money when it will be sprayed in salty residue immediately. In essence, Krown is a water repellent that prevents the salty slush from contacting the metal underneath the car . The paste wax does the same for the top side of the car.
Nokian Tires hands down makes the bestall weather/all season tire. The versatile Nokian Tyres WRG4 optimally combines high-performance, all-season handling and reliable winter grip to make it a true all-weather tire. I run the WRG4 on my 2005 Touareg 4.2 V8. I also ran their previous generation WRG3 for many years.
Had a 2023 GX for two years and just traded it for an LX 570. GX is a great vehicle and some things I like more than LX. Definitely feels lighter to drive around and that’s saying something since the GX is a tank to begin with. As bad as the mpg is in 460, it seems great compared to LX. Great video.
@@AmosDohmswhen the temperature permits I immediately go to a manual car wash and use only water on the underside of the car to get any caked on salt. I then re-apply the Krown solution to specific areas. They sell smaller bottles at their locations.
275/65/18 tires, especially AT’s or road focused AT’s shorten the braking distance tremendously and don’t add any noise to the cabin. Just make sure to get SL rated as my KO3’s are E rated and are a smidge stiff, but I need the sidewall durability
The Toyo Open Country AT3 in 275/65r18 comes in a "C" load. That's the route I plan on going. With aftermarket wheels it adds less than 5lbs per tire. If you get the SL version of the same tire with aftermarket wheels, it ends up roughly 4lbs lighter than the stock Bridgestone Duellers and stock wheels.
Dude. I've had the same issues with the car pulling to the right. I have to hold the wheel a bit to the left. I was super frustrated. Send me a message and I'll share the alignment specs Lexus had to do this time to get it right. it's a lot better now!
I cant believe it's already been a year already! It seems to me that you might have done well with an NX or RX as far as size. Bit more of a CUV than a full SUV but by the size anyway. That being said, the Toyota 4Runner GX edition is pretty sweet. We have a 4runner in the household and it is amazing, as is this fancy 4runner.
Interesting on the steering pull. Picked up CPO 2022 last weekend and didn't notice anything in the test drive but 4 hour drive home I had to hold steering wheel to the left just a tad to stay straight. Same with driving around town now. I'll add some air to the right and see if I can stop the right pull.
It’s funny I spent $100 on the alignment on my new 23 in the Lexus dealership recently because of the steering wheel was bit to the left. Adjustment sheet was provided after work was done and the numbers were pretty much the same and nothing’s changed. Damn stealership, now I know it’s normal 😂 for Gx460.
I always look forward to your GX videos. I'm hoping to get one this year but I'm also debating a Ranger Raptor or a BMW X5 but I feel like the GX is the best for the long term
No matter what you do, other than not driving in winter, rust is inevitable. Especially body-on-frame vehicles 😢 Edit: Those preventative sprays should be done before every winter, and if possible, midway and after winter. Sounds like an overkill but it’s not for body-on-frame.
yes but you can slow it down significantly. I've been under enough treated vs untreated trucks with tons of miles to see that theres a major difference when treated.
Not necessarily. I am from Canada and they use salt here on the roads and the only saving grace is if you get your vehicle oil sprayed. Krown is the main franchisee up here (there are plenty of others, just not as popular or widespread). They drill holes into the doors and along the body, the spray the oil inside. This provides protection inside the doors, body panels etc. They also coat the underbody, suspension, trunk hinges, latches etc. Not a single one of my vehicles I've ever owned has rusted. It's a must for us. Not sure if this is as popular in your area, but if you can find a place, do it for sure. Annual application and it costs us about $140 CAD.
Just dont do that spray on rubber undercoating. It will rust even faster than not doing anything because it seals in the moisture against the frame. Spray the underneath with FluidFilm or something similar
They really make it difficult where I live to keep the rust at bay... they go so incredibly overboard with the salt on the roads here it borders on absurd. Any time there's any amount of snow forecast they dump so much salt everywhere its almost like driving on gravel. I would honestly rather just be driving on the hard packed snow. So not only will the lower half of your car get peppered with rock chips, but it'll be coated in salt at the same time. Turbo rust. Fun! If it doesn't snow, then all that salt is kicking up constantly until the next precipitation when it starts all over again. The drive through wash makes good money off me when its too cold to use the bay washes... Really wish they would just mandate snow tires from like beginning of november through end of march and use about a quarter of the salt they currently do
I’m so proud of what your channel has become tedward I have been watching for years! I love your GX it’s awesome the red is great. I have a 2012 Volvo S60 is it prone to rust ? Is there anything I should do to prevent that or is it good?
thank you! I don't specifically know about the S60 but if you can get it on a lift and take a look you'll know pretty quickly if its prone to rust or not
Future topics so I don't feel compelled to do them for my channel: Cable management, hardwiring dashcam; dashcam video settings vs GoPro . Does dashcam video capture readable licence plates at night ?
Do you not have Krown rustproofing down there? Very good experience with it personally. I had a 10 year old subaru that had been sprayed for 8 of those years in terrible salty ontario winters and there was barely a spec of rust, even on the fasteners. I have friends also with 15+ year old trucks, dang actually 20 years old now like a 2006 silverado that were taken to krown basically every year and the frames are perfect. They do the inside of the frames and the inside of your body panels. I believe topher uses them if you want to know more next time you speak to him. Idk if some people have issues with it but its like 120 bucks a year here in Canada and it works a treat for me and my friends who use it, and this is in ULTRA salty ontario streets, not out in balmy BC somewhere.
Do you do anything with the body panels? I can see Krown keeping the frame and underbody rust away, but what about the upper parts that aren't getting sprayed?
I wiped it all down to get the surface clean. There were like tiny dots of rust where it looks like the dealer jacked it up without hockey pucks. But that’s was it
Has anyone put Michelin Cross Climate 2 on their GX? I had them on my VW Touareg and they were amazing. Not super happy with the Bridgestones on my ‘23 GX.
The new ascent at from Bridgestone should be better. Unfortunately the arrangement OEMs have with tire manufacturers means they get compromised rubber to meet cost requirements from OEM.
GX is body on frame with rear axle and heavy weight. you feel it is harsher than your Camry but the GX can take a bump much harder than camry in theory
15:12 - and that's another reason why I don't want cars that attract attention. I'd rather get a sleeper, like a silver W202 C43 AMG, or a W124 E500. That way, it's only the true Mercedes enthusiasts and spotters who know what it actually is. To everyone else, it's just another Benz.
Is propensity to rust a Toyota thing? My E90 xdrive has been my winter car for years in New England. Not a spec of rust. But now I’m a bit worried about our Highlander.
@@TedwardDrives As I mentioned above I had a 2002 Sequoia (4.6V8) for 13 yrs, At the 10 yr mark Toyota informed me that a recall to inspect the truck frame would be undertaken, & if corroded, the entire frame would be replaced free of charge which unknown to me was covered by their 10 yr frame warranty. The frame turned out to be fine (they showed it to me on the hoist); they re-applied the factory undercoating to the frame. Only the underbody spare tire cradle that lowers to get the tire off was seized, so they replaced the entire cradle. This wasn't a California truck. It was bought new and used in what is being termed "salty Ontario". It had received no aftermarket rust protection, but it was washed regularly at a touchless car wash
I had a 2020 GX. It was reliable, but it also drove terrible in the wind on highway, horrible mpg, too small and uncomfortable. I'm 6ft 180lbs. Felt like I was sitting on a bench as opposed to sitting in a seat. I had a 470 before the 460 and liked it better. Overall i think both are overrated.
Now when I drive AWD EV, I can’t help but see the GX as a dinosaur. Before I dreamed of it. Realistically, who is going to keep vehicle for 400k miles? People drive a bit less with home deliveries and remote work and air travel. If you do keep it, it $130k in fuel costs. Transportation charges and I feel that efficient low maintenance cars that get upgraded every 5 years have an edge

I live in a snowy climate, I make yearly trips to Krown rust control to get under coatings. Highly recommend
Do you do anything else to prevent rust?
@@AmosDohmswhen the temperature permits I immediately go to a manual car wash and use only water on the underside of the car to get any caked on salt. I then re-apply the Krown solution to specific areas. They sell smaller bottles at their locations.
I am in the same boat, sick as a dog and my car became a sheet of ice because I was bed ridden 🫠
As some who's only experienced snow infrequently, it's not easy for me to fathom how detrimental snow can be to cars.
It’s not necessarily the snow, but primarily salt. Some places get some snow but they don’t use salt, and the cars are fine.
Looks like you need an inspection sticker tedward!
Yessir. Legal until the end of the month
I’m driving a PT Cruiser with michelin all seasons during the winter. No traction control or ABS either. Wish me luck 🥲
When I’m not driving my GX I watch videos of other ppl driving their GX.
Every one I’ve driven does it so it’s definitely “normal” but it gets old.
Same, it’s super annoying. Never noticed it until I had put 1k miles on it from new.
Do 5k oil changes, 60k coolant and trans drain and fills and enjoy your GX for 20+ years.
Yup been on a 5k interval for oil which keeps my mind at ease
I always look forward to your GX videos. I'm hoping to get one this year but I'm also debating a Ranger Raptor or a BMW X5 but I feel like the GX is the best for the long term
No matter what you do, other than not driving in winter, rust is inevitable. Especially body-on-frame vehicles 😢
Edit: Those preventative sprays should be done before every winter, and if possible, midway and after winter.
Annual application and it costs us about $140 CAD.
my sister just got a 2025 toyota camry xse awd yesterday. and they said they will do the undercoating every year. so that pretty cool
Just dont do that spray on rubber undercoating. It will rust even faster than not doing anything because it seals in the moisture against the frame. Spray the underneath with FluidFilm or something similar
Great great content
Is there anything I should do to prevent that or is it good?
thank you! I don't specifically know about the S60 but if you can get it on a lift and take a look you'll know pretty quickly if its prone to rust or not
Ted I would love to see you review a built/lifted 200 series Land Cruiser
Future topics so I don't feel compelled to do them for my channel: Cable management, hardwiring dashcam; dashcam video settings vs GoPro . Does dashcam video capture readable licence plates at night ?
All the free time makes sense now from the video.........5 kids kinda cut that down to no free time. 😊
oh man rust is not gonna be a problem just wash it regularly (especially in winter season)... you'll be fine
Disagree. Have been under a bunch of them and they rot
@ due to improper maintenance. Live in Illinois with ‘12 Lexus and Acura.. nether have a lick of rust regarding frame… I don’t let salt sit for long
Sometimes alignment is within spec but you need to recalibrate steering wheel angle sensor.
How do you go about doing that?
@@victortran8540 You need a scanner
I would be so happy if you got your hands on an Alfa Romeo zagato sz
1st comment from a fellow GXer.
Happy Friday! How many miles on your GX?
@@TedwardDrives Happy Friday. '22 w/ 31.5K (mostly problem free) miles
It seems like all suvs with light steering sway with the road. I have to do that with my RDX as well. I don’t notice it as much with my type r
i find these interesting
How did you prep it for the undercoat? And was there any surface rust already?
I wiped it all down to get the surface clean. There were like tiny dots of rust where it looks like the dealer jacked it up without hockey pucks. But that’s was it
@@TedwardDrives not bad! That must be peace of mind knowing it’s done now!
definitely feeling more at ease but I'm still going to inspect regularly to see if its "working"
What is this 'rust' you speak of? Hello from AZ, btw. :)
I’m in Toronto and am using Krown on my 2017 Mustang that I’m daily driving, any reason why that wouldn’t be enough?
What happened to the hawkeye STI you bought?
I have never owned a Subaru
@TedwardDrives could have sworn you did a video couple years ago bought a 2007 WRX STI and drove it back to Mass.?
I have a 2015 4runner LTD with 220k miles. Will either get a GX460 or maybe a LC 200. The big question is- does the 2023 GX still have a CD player?
It does!! Which is incredible
@@TedwardDrives SOLD!
I have the same gx luxury, and it isn't soft. My 05 camry take bumps softer then my gx
GX is body on frame with rear axle and heavy weight. you feel it is harsher than your Camry but the GX can take a bump much harder than camry in theory
It's not that, I have air suspension in the back and every single lx, 4runner they are way smoother over bumps.
Mine doesn’t have the air suspension and I’ve always preferred the ride of the static rear
Do you know how long the GX is with the rear door open?
When will the tedward stickers be back in stock?
Oh good reminder! I’ll order
You have such a nice house and you leave this nice car outside.
meanwhile me in my 1.0 3cil Suzuki in Europe lol
15:12 - and that's another reason why I don't want cars that attract attention. I'd rather get a sleeper, like a silver W202 C43 AMG, or a W124 E500. That way, it's only the true Mercedes enthusiasts and spotters who know what it actually is. To everyone else, it's just another Benz.
Cool, but the fuel economy is pretty brutal
Was thinking of this car, but was also thinking of buying the 550, just wanna know everyone advice
Is propensity to rust a Toyota thing? My E90 xdrive has been my winter car for years in New England. Not a spec of rust. But now I’m a bit worried about our Highlander.
Yes. In fact if I remember correctly they used to have full frame recalls for Tacoma’s because they just wasted away
It's a Japanese thing. Mazda and Subaru also had huuuge problems with it until about 2015 or so
How about good old fashioned undercoating?
Do you live on long island?
No I do not
I had a 2020 GX.
If Tedward had a wife that would be more shocking than anything else in 2025 so far… 😜
lol it would destabilize the earth
Bro do you still drive your fl5 ?
Yes but not in winter. It's in storage at Garage 42 with the M5 and the 911. It'll be back out once the salt is gone
@@TedwardDrives really looking forward to it !
me too!
you're just like me fr
Tedward please hide that dash camera wire
I like it
@ 🤣
Trade the GX for a Crosstrek with a 2.5L.
Then there'd be no luxury
Get the Limited. Better mpgs and sporty-er. Good ground clearance too.
(I’m joking, of course. Kinda) 😊👍
1:36 brother in law? are you married tedward?
My sister is married haha
Bruh what 🤦🏾♂️; "BROTHER IN LAW"
Now when I drive AWD EV, I can’t help but see the GX as a dinosaur. Before I dreamed of it. Realistically, who is going to keep vehicle for 400k miles? People drive a bit less with home deliveries and remote work and air travel. If you do keep it, it $130k in fuel costs. Transportation charges and I feel that efficient low maintenance cars that get upgraded every 5 years have an edge
Sexy af. I have the same car btw haha
haha nobody has said its sexy to me until now. Very happy
Unsure why people claim their GX’s pull. My 2020 Rioja was a corporate owned vehicle that was sold to me and its never pulled and never had KDSS lean.
what do you mean OR HUSBAND 7:55
Fun experiment for you… sort videos by oldest
😮 I was surprised too! Cute couple! I get tedward and Charlie from daily motor mixed up. So I thought wait. What aren't you and Alyssa? Lol anyway great video love the GX. I'm disappointed I didnt spend more and go for it. I have an fj cruiser and it's nice. But the lexus is a whole nicer world
