Baojie BJ-318: Why this HAM radio is junk. Have you tested VHF power output?

  • Have you purchased one of these radios? Have you tested the VHF power? Let us know in the comments. While UHF is power is "reasonable" (15-18W) on the two BJ-318's we own, VHF power output averages approximately 1/4 power of your average hand held. We only see 1-2W into a dummy load. The radio has MANY problems that might be easy to overlook for a radio under $100, but this one cannot be overlooked. Bad power amplifier? Bad radio frequency amplifier? Regardless, UV5R 8W handheld's we tested reads 600% more power on VHF.
Alternatives for budget similar (25W mobile) HAM radios that actually function close to as advertised: TYT8600, AT-779UV, Leixen VV-898

I have the 218 and it works well and puts out advertised watts, even higher down under where is legal is the US for vhf.

I would contact the manufacturer and get both your radios replaced I have 3 of these radios and all are up to par! The thing I hate about these radios is the dam beep is loud and needs to be either silent or they should give us a way to lower the the beeps. Anyway thought I would leave a comment saying what the 3 radios that I have say and do exactly as it's advertised...

Appreciate the comment David. Can you confirm you have tested VHF on a power meter? The beep can be turned off through the menu or CHIRP, but it is an "all or nothing" thing. It would be nice if it was volume controlled. Funny enough the beep that can be heard in this video is not the radio, but rather my CO detector/alarm warning of low battery. 73's!

I have one that works perfect. Must've got a bad batch. I hate any kind of beeps. As mentioned, I turned the beep off in the menu. I keep it in my tornado shelter with a retractable antenna. Sorry you got a bad one. I had the same problem with UV 5R. Four of five failed in a few months. I replaced them with this. Month after month it just works.

That is good news that yours work as they should. I thought my 318's were alright as I could still hit repeaters and simplex worked for a few miles, but noticed I had better range and signal reports on 5W HT's. Mine could be from a bad batch like you said. What do your 318's measure on the power meter on VHF at high? I just orderer the AnyTone AT-779UV from Amazon. Really impressed so far. 21-23W on high, good signal reports, faster scanning and I like that you can set it to exclude channels from Scan right from the menu. Thanks for the comment and 73 to you!

Oh no, hopefully you got a refund?
Very disappointing, I wanted to buy one of these Baojies... Maybe 218 (older) is better?

I think by the time I got around to testing those radios it was outside of the return window. I'm not sure about the 218's but from what I gather than 318's are hit and miss. Some of them are functional for the most part power wise, but are still glitchy. There are better radios for the price... AnyTone and TYT are good in my experience.
