@@andyroid5028 There was a song from a 1956 Broadway play called Mutual Admiration Society. Covered by a few people and a pretty big hit at the time. Rick should incorporate this song into his interviews. Probably wouldn't get the video blocked.
Watch the first part again. I wouldn't say he was depressed more like reevaluating where he fit in musically. Not that he had to but all creative people go through phases like that.
Many, many Brazilian guitarists seem to have amazing skills. Its common to play with exceptional expression and personality, so its not just about technical skills. I've never been to Brazil, but I'm pretty sure the whole country is jam packed full of great guitarists.
I would say packed full of great musicians, not only guitarists. The thing is that barrier language keeps them inside the hole most of the time. Brazil is a curious case of not fitting musically in Latin America and not fitting in pop world scene for not singing in English, or you can't connect with local audience. There's a whole scene that happens there - and only there - and there are great musical folks making it.
Well, there are a lot of Brazilians, so statistically we are bound to get a good number of good musicians. But you do have a point. Brazil is extremely musical. It is a huge country full of regional music styles, rhythms, influences and a veritable melting pot of cultures. We've always really loved stringed instruments for some reason. Brazilians have been hooked on guitars ever since the Jesuits first brought old renaissance and baroque guitars to evangelize the native population.
Brazilian culture diversity plays a major influence on forming "its" guitar players high standards techniques: African rhythm + European Classic Music + the desire to ever create new sounds.
Sometimes the most empathetic people come from abusive families where they were not afforded that same empathy. Safe not to assume anything about someone's childhood. But I agree with the sentiment. Rick is a very warm person and it shows.

Rick Beato - The Guitar Therapist! So this is what makes Rick special. He doesn't just care about the music, but also about the musicians - their life story and their motivation. This is the behind the scenes work that it takes to keep the love for music going. Good work, sir.
Fascinating. Something that is never talked about in this production-driven culture is the need to incubate and take a break. Creativity is not simply a physical activity. The constant need to practice and "hone one's chops" is not what making art is about. The pressure to perform can burn an artist/musician out. That Mateus Asato admits that he lost interest for a short spell is refreshingly honest. It does not and should not mean he wasn't, during that time, every bit the creative force he is. Bravo to him and you Rick for this interview.
So...after watching that incredible Sting interview, amongst others, we get this brilliant interview. Can we all just acknowledge how skilled Rick is at interviewing amazing musicians. This was the most interesting guitar interview I have ever seen. I didn’t know of Mateus before this, but to see a person who radiates such amazing talent seemingly unknown to themselves. His humility makes you think he just picked up a guitar for the first time, but in his technique you see the most amazing thing you ever heard. Just wow!
I discovered this kid a couple years ago on You Tube. So many great guitarists on YT but most spend too much time on shredding for my liking. Mateus has that Jimi/Vaughn style melody that I do not get bored after 5 minutes on. I would love to see him live with a band if he ever comes to the NC area.
Omg, Rick, I've been a fan for a while, you are a teacher of all kinds of music and music history, amazing. Mateus, newfound magician of the guitar, I'm honored to know of your skills. I've always marveled of Brazilian Portuguese, a harmonious language for sure. I'll never be the same after this video, thank you both.
Rick realized he was having trouble in his career, and immediately decided to message him. What a person. I subscribe to this for years now and from time to time yt reminds of checking him and Im always glad. Mateus, você é foda!
Every few years, a breakout guitar player hits the scene: advancing the art-of-guitar by displaying skills that are truly new and creative, and elevating expectations for what can be accomplished on guitar. For our space n time, Mateus is that player.
Rick has such a platform now that his reach extends to these top tier musicians who don’t mind giving their time to appearing on this channel to share their stories. A+
This video is a piece of art. Made me emotional a few times just from a conversation between two kind and talented souls. Also, it's a pleasure being from Brazil as well. Vai Brasil, vai Mateus!
I really enjoyed this interview as I do most all Rick videos. Mataus seems so nice and down to earth. So positive and encouraging. It’s inspiring me to play and practice more and I will be checking out his music as I just learned about him from this video.:)
This is my introduction Mateus. Because I'm old. Because I'm a drummer. Amazing 😳! Forever in Rick's debt. Melodic, slippery, fast, precise, original, beautiful virtuosic playing. Never seen/heard anything quite like this. Both of you were great together! Could have watched two more hours, for sure.
Wow those 37 minutes flew by!!! I could listen to this for hours!!!! I'm so happy you got to do this interview!!! Please get Guthrie Govan next!!! Can't wait Rick!!! Viva Mateus!!!!!!
Yep; you, Rick, ARE an extremely necessary inspiration and advocate for music in general, and Mateos is an amazing guitarist and an obviously high quality human being... something far too few musicians of his caliber are these days. His playing is just unbelievable. For him to be so humble is such a positive side-benefit. I really appreciate your channel and all the wonderful music you have turned me on to!
Rick, I sincerely appreciate you and the platform you've created for the guitar and music community! You are truly a triple OG in the game! Mateus was then and still is a friend of mine from those days at the Musicians Institute and yes, certainly an outstanding player and gifted personality. Mateus, thank you for inspiring me to unlock my potential on the electric guitar! Had I not met you when I did, I'd surely still be miles behind where my playing stands. You're a better teacher than you give yourself credit for.
Congrats Mateus on bouncing back. You inspire me wholesomely. This story is totally relatable and very relevant to all creatives out there. Just know that as a sensitive person, you're bound to hit rock bottom as a result of outgiving yourself (burnout). When you do you'll probably contemplate social alienation to reevaluate, or further detachment which leads to depression. On the flip side with Mateus, I'm greatful for true friends like Rick who reach their hand in the pit to pull a friend out, dust them up, remind them who they are and thus causing them to bounce back. Such people add color to this world.
Two legends together just hanging out and showing their love and appreciation for each other, loved this so much. Rick, you truly are a special force in the musical community, please don't stop doing what you do, as Mateus said it is so important and appreciated!
I'm not an instagram follower so this is the very first time I've heard of Mateus, he's obviously an amazing guitarist but he seems a really humble and genuinely nice guy. What a great interview!

Saw Mateus in Vegas with Silk Sonic! Dude is 🔥! His playing is unique and inventive. I’m going back to see them again this week to see one of their final shows just to see and hear Mateus one more time!!!
This just takes me back to the good 'ole days when people shared their feelings and admiration for each other and are humble yet awesome. This is why I love your channel, it's reality like John Denver on the Muppets-- good vibes all over the place.
Watching this video brought tears to my eyes. Matteo, thank you for the bravery of opening up about you losing your inspiration and how you felt lost. During the pandemic, our son, who is a very much internationally known musician, composer, producer, dj and performer has hit rock bottom with depression and anxiety. I will let him know about the interview. As a point of interest, he is the only one in my country to have your T-style Suhr, which he loves, by the way. Our son has toured the world for years and has many number 1 hits in his genre. He is an exceptional guitarist, among other things and a great fan of yours. You are so clear about how support from a fellow musician helped you when you were down. As a father, I am naturally deeply concerned about how my son is suffering. As a seasoned coach, I know that I am too close to offer my knowledge to help. To him, I’m just Dad. I know it’s a lot to ask, but it might mean the world of difference to my son if you would care to reach out to him. If you read this and want to help, post Yes on my wall and we’ll take it from there.
The way how Rick handled this interview was amazing. Matheus starts it so introvert and a little uncomfortable, and soon after he was so light, eyes on eyes, with a smile on his face.
Everyone… by now, has to really realize… that Rick is changing the World of Music? I mean… seriously. Rick is a “great” influence on music. I can only imagine what wisdom & compassion Rick rammed into his ears. Thank you Universe and RUclips for these great guitar players and new friends 😃
A friend sent me a link to Mateus playing 'Don't Dream It's Over' a few years ago. I remember just being blown away at his sense of melody and dynamics. Such a clean player. He has only gotten better. Such an inspiration.
This was an emotional touching interview. Kudos to Rick you just turned me on to the most humble ,creative, technical, melodic player I’ve heard in a long, long time . Thank you both …
Love this interview. And it shows us that even the super talented musicians can go through periods of lost or muted inspiration. Thankfully Mateus got it back, and we’re all the better for it. Humbling and inspiring all over again.
Wow. You know what's funny, is that the conversation and playing at 25 minutes in, Mateus is talking about double stops and rhythm giving credit to Hendrix, Mayer, Frusciante, etc. and then he plays a little improvisation which struck my ears as also an homage to Joe Pass, Bucky Pizzarelli and many other great jazzers. Great interview and Mateus has some sick skills.
Mateus just has this slippery vibe about his playing - it’s so broken out of the box, well executed and smooth as hell. Such an inspiration to pick up the guitar and find new ways to get my voice to come out of the instrument. Awesome as always with your interviews, Rick !!
Rick you do a f...ing great interview. I have 0 gitaur talent but am a lifelong fan of great gituar playing. you ask great questions that increases our gitaur iq. I didnt know the term "economy picking", fascinating

Every few years, a breakout guitar player hits the scene: advancing the art-of-guitar by displaying skills that are truly new and creative, and elevating expectations for what can be accomplished on guitar. For our space n time, Mateus is that player.
I think Mateus Mancuso, Julian Lage, and Plini deserve mention too.
Tosin Abasi
I would add Isaiah Sharkey to that list
@@antonylinteau3408 agreed
@@nate2629 also Blake Mills! Phenomenal player
Rick has such a platform now that his reach extends to these top tier musicians who don’t mind giving their time to appearing on this channel to share their stories. A+
Rick seems to be a nice guy on the screen. The story with Mateus shows he's not faking it :)
This video is a piece of art. Made me emotional a few times just from a conversation between two kind and talented souls. Also, it's a pleasure being from Brazil as well. Vai Brasil, vai Mateus!
Mateus is a real gem for the guitar world, as a guitarist, thank you Rick from the bottom of my heart
I really enjoyed this interview as I do most all Rick videos. Mataus seems so nice and down to earth. So positive and encouraging. It’s inspiring me to play and practice more and I will be checking out his music as I just learned about him from this video.:)
I can’t believe he’s only 28! He has so much wisdom and feeling in his playing. I can’t wait to hear how he sounds in 10 years!
Omg, he actually never had Guthrie on... The final boss.
This isn’t the first Beato interview I knew about 5 minutes in I was going to watch several times
I love Mateus' vibe, so calm. Also credits to Rick for his MAD skill as a listener!
What a genuine soul. Love his playing.
What a cool and humble dude.
I remember having country guitar class with Mateus and he was always so humble and nice. He’s a beast
Mateus is so cool, and Rick, you’re such a good listener and interviewer!
Mateus is such an influential and talented guitar player. What I really admire though is really how humble, and fascinated by music he is.
I came by being a little curious. I leave as a fan. What a nice, humble guy with a heart of gold.
Two legends together just hanging out and showing their love and appreciation for each other, loved this so much. Rick, you truly are a special force in the musical community, please don't stop doing what you do, as Mateus said it is so important and appreciated!
Dá-lhe Mateus! Orgulho e alegrias que estás de volta! Que legal essa entrevista! Way to go Rick! Awesome!
I'm not an instagram follower so this is the very first time I've heard of Mateus, he's obviously an amazing guitarist but he seems a really humble and genuinely nice guy. What a great interview!
And I did not even know this guy existed! Nobody speaks about him in Brazil! No media, specialized channels, anything!
But, the guy is good!
What a nice and God blessed guitarist! ❤️🎸😊
Never knew that Mateus had a break like this. Hope he finds what he is looking for, whatever that is. Stay safe, both of you.
OMG!!!!!!! MATEUSÃO voando, cara!!! He's a freaking monster on guitar!!
Rick , great episode, like many others... You are being watched all over the world and your thoughtful and interesting contribution to music is just priceless. Greetings from Poland sir :) !
Rick's efforts to keep contemporary instrumental music alive are priceless.
How can you not love this young man? So humble, yet so incredibly talented. He understands and GETS melody and it comes through with such soulfulness.
I hope Mateus can reach out to your son.
Tell that to those blocking his videos!
@@mitchweiner So true
just hope we can get back to more music with instruments.... all this fake singing beeps and whirrs is garbage
Thank you both …
De Campo Grande, no Mato Grosso do Sul, para o mundo. Sensacional! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What a refreshing interview. Rick, thank you for saving Mateus from his funk and allowing him return with a spark.
Awesome as always with your interviews, Rick !!
inspiring new player. His love of the gituar is obvious. Great interview Rick, absolutely fun to watch him play.
Rick you do a f...ing great interview. I have 0 gitaur talent but am a lifelong fan of great gituar playing. you ask great questions that increases our gitaur iq. I didnt know the term "economy picking", fascinating
Rick
You are such a good interviewer. You set up an open ended question and just sit back and let him flow. Great interview. My grandkids will be watching this 50 years from now.
humility and greatness.....a great combination. This guy is a breath of fresh air
Que orgulho de ser brasileiro e campo-grandense. Parabéns Mateus!
@Strato 765 ainnn imagine not judging people based on their political beliefs
@Strato 765 o que caralhos isso tem a ver com o que o cara disse? kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
O antibolsonarismo é um sintoma quase que corrosivo na cabeça de alguns. rs
Duude, what's going on these last few days on RUclips with so much stuff related to brazilian music/musicians!? First, Rick Beato was interviewed by Nelson Faria, a phenomenal brazilian guitar player with an also awesome RUclips channel. Then, a couple days ago, Charles Cornell released a whole video essay about the origins of Bossa Nova, a full history lesson on that! And now Mateus being interview by Rick!? What an amazing moment to be brazilian! Love from Brazil, Rick! Mateus is a blessing, so sad that he isn't as revered in here as he is in the US, for example. Such a phenomenal guitar player, he should be showing up all around TV shows and all that here!
sounded like joe pass at 25:00
Man you got to love him he is so humble and honest guy , great musician so inspirational
What a sweet man. Very Gracious. We all can't have talent like Mateus, but we all play our part. Mr. Beato helps all of us, inspires us, he's a Great Blessing to us - just like he inspired Mateus to carry on. Thank you, Rick !
Mateus' humility, for being the monster player that he is, is awesome! And you Rick, God Bless you for inspiring him to put his amazing talent out there for us all to enjoy and get inspiration from!
Such a great, honest, and emotional interview. Any passionate person who has had moments of “I’m not enjoying what I love” can identify with Mateus.
Great Interview! He's such a huge inspiration to this generation of guitar players.
What an amazing guy. So modest and such an incredible player! And most importantly, you can see he enjoys himself :)
DIRETO DE CAMPÃO, TOCA DEMAIS ESSE CARA AI. SUCESSO !!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
The guy is so humble for the talent that he has, I’ll have to start following him just to see how his style grows, progress’s and blossoms even more
Had to pinch myself to know I wasn't dreaming! Stellar words! Mateus is an inspiration :) Thank you Rick for your heart and all that you do for the community! Forever in your debt for all that you've given so freely
