I decided to go the rattle can route on my own car after trying the Rusto roller paint job on a beater work truck (not worth it imo...) but one thing I noticed from breaking open a can of Rustoleum that clogged somewhere and draining the paint out was the spraycan Rustoleum is actually super duper thin compared to the actual paint in a can like in this video. I use that Rustoleum in my trade for various things like painting metal heaters, doors, and that kind of thing. I noticed brushing on the spray can Rustoleum was that I had no brush marks with it, despite brushing it, because it was so thin and full of solvents. I think honestly instead of 1:1 paint and thinner you might be better off with a ratio of about 2:1 or 1.5:1, I think even 1:1 is too thick, though obviously at that ratio you'd be two or three coating anyway.
GilBatesLovesyou Yea my first coat was 1:1 my 2nd coat it was too thick I didn’t go 1:1. It actually sprayed a lot better thinned out. But I’m still experimenting with it.

Hey what's up kool video what color are you using on the car again? The pad you used is from harbor freight as well. Hey what about hardener from the magic can.
Dont know why you wouldnt just use the cans so no clean up or mixing . Do know you did it just to try it . Would you clear it after the color coat and wet sand?
I would add the Urethane hardener which acts like a clear for this single stage making it even more shiny and proven to last 15 yrs.I personally have seen it with my own eyes when added with the hardener on a tractor and its still shiny to this day but used with a gun.
gary salas It’s a 50/50 for me I prefer can during winter time due to not drying as fast so the paint comes out flawless but in the summer I prefer this because it don’t dry fast but after it’s done and out in the sun it’s easy to dry it quickly and achieve a nice finish.
@书中自有黄金屋 I'm sorry but where does it say "airless"? The noise sure sounds like a compressor that's why I was asking. Are you 100% there's no compressor involved?
Great job bro ! Really, unbolievable .... Do you even get that this look better than most cars - new cars ! wow after buffing.... And Im thinking to do like this: 1.paint. 2. wet sanding 1000, 1500, (maybe 2000) 3. clearcoat. 4. buffing... But I have to find out what paint I can use - that is really a big problem for me at this moment... well there is just one thing and way to find right one - to try... I already did try some water based (acrylic) but I tried to paint with roller - result was terrible because of bubbles ....
Uroš Petrović I would find a oil based paint. No clear would be required if you thin it with acetone and if you add enamel hardener because that makes the paint super strong
Love the video! I have the same idea of painting my van. I plain on painting it with the Rustoleum 7771 Sand color. Since it's a lighter then the gray you used, do you think it the orange peel will show up less?
Right yea less orange peel for sure. Still not sure which method im going to use. I know i wanna use the can under the hood because it would be harder to wet sand out the imperfections on that area.
@@JamesDguy true, seems like the best option, I'm considering painting and modifying the exterior of my red TL, because the car has too many things that need attention, so if im going to spend so much money making it run like new, I might as well go all the way in and make it look like new too before I sell it. That way the next person to get it wont have to do anything to it but enjoy it. Man I remember your sentra videos and the green and black turbo civic videos, seem like so long ago lol
Hi Guys, Great video again. Are you always meant to use the cutting compound after the spray and before the clear coat? Sorry for my stupid question. Cheers
Dublin Plumbing I only use the wet sanding when there is a lot of orange peel but I don’t buff/compound before clear coat but I have no intentions to clear this because it’s pretty strong.
Screw that James. All the adjustments and cleaning, I'd just rattle can it wet sand and clear and save 20 and all the cleanup and b.s. Seems the idea is to throw down some color, then work it out as desired. Why does it sound like you're shop is full of rattlesnakes?
Awesome job 👍, I asked my dad one time how come you know well the city streets he said by getting lost. It's a process but eventually you perfect it it that's the goal.
I need help here... well we in europe or in my country - we dont have rustoleum paint and I just dont know what is that paint - is that that "old" way how they make paints - that paint who need like two days to dry ? We have some paint like that here - we call them "oil" based paint, also on nitro base (that one drys very fast).... if someone can tell me more about this I would be really happy ! :) Thanks in advance...
Uroš Petrović This paint is Rustoleum oil based paint. It didn’t take 2 days to dry it took a few hours in the sun but to be cured enough to buff I waited another day.
Chris Cardinale I won’t be doing 2k over this since single stage don’t require a clear coat. If I wet sand the paint better I can get rid of all the clear coat which I might do since it’s been requested. Single stage with hardener in it doesn’t require clear because it has a uv protected hardener.
That's exactly what I was asking about on that other video man awsome job and thanks for all the videos if your ever in dallas hmu I got some coronas for ya!!
jesse flz This don’t have clear coat in it ^ it’s not required. When used with hadener it becomes uv resistant and won’t chip or fade. Single stage is awesome stuff.
Moore Motorsports James Dguy awh! I’m all the way I’m NY. Shoot. I was really hopping you would be closer but keep up the good work man! Your videos and results are amazing!
WeirdJerz3y In my experience with Rustoleum the acetone actually works way better and keeps that gloss look better when using acetone. I have sprayed Rustoleum out of the gun many times just it was my first time with this electric gun. It needed thinned more though that’s 1 reason the orange peel was crazy
Not gonna lie, that thing has a pretty awful spray pattern. Like a half clogged rattle can nozzle. Wonder if there would be some way to modify it to get better atomization. Would help a lot with the orange peel too. Either way, you can still get results on a budget! Def needs a lot of finish work after, but it happens.
802 Garage It was because the paint was to thick i needed to thin it out some. My first time painting on the trunk it wasn’t that bad. So I think I just need to thin it out more next time.
What's the name of the hardener I want to buy some this week to finish this car off. It's taking forever to do it the spray can way for me because I have to do it in sections. So I guess I will have half spray can and the other from a can

@书中自有黄金屋 I'm sorry but where does it say "airless"? The noise sure sounds like a compressor that's why I was asking. Are you 100% there's no compressor involved?
@书中自有黄金屋 If you look at 9:21, is that a compressor in the floor (lower right of frame)?
Nice job
Thanks!
Love the video! I have the same idea of painting my van. I plain on painting it with the Rustoleum 7771 Sand color. Since it's a lighter then the gray you used, do you think it the orange peel will show up less?
Ive always wanted to try rusoleum in a airless sprayer exept with the one with the separate airpump.
hi awesome vid, just one question, instead of acetone can I use paint thinner? would it melt? and can I use anzahl paint?
So me shine. Have same buffer & compound. Did my Mirage but has hail stone damage but it shined Ok even in a so so effort.
The spray can method seems cheaper, with less orange peel in my opinion, based on your other videos
So that rustoleum gallon is high gloss even though is doesn't say high gloss on the package? the pints say gloss but the gallon doesnt, hmmm
Dude thanks for the help
Hi Guys,
Great video again.
@@JamesDguy thanks bro. Gonna try the bonnet on my truck today..
Screw that James. All the adjustments and cleaning, I'd just rattle can it wet sand and clear and save 20 and all the cleanup and b.s. Seems the idea is to throw down some color, then work it out as desired. Why does it sound like you're shop is full of rattlesnakes?
Edwin Feldman It’s locust lol it’s literally everywhere around here in Texas lol.
That's what i was thinking... Cans, or roller
So many negative comments. May be a bad sprayer but wetsanding fixes all that. Can make a paint look great even if you rolled it on.
I want to do this to my pt cruiser. I now have a garage to do it in. What's the glossier color without clear
With that amount of orange peel, I would’ve started wet-sanding with a handful of jagged rocks! Lol
Wet sand with 1 grit 😂
Awesome job 👍, I asked my dad one time how come you know well the city streets he said by getting lost. It's a process but eventually you perfect it it that's the goal.
Exactly! It takes practice for sure.
Great video like always 👍👍
Thanks!
Can you use any single stage paint
I need help here... well we in europe or in my country - we dont have rustoleum paint and I just dont know what is that paint - is that that "old" way how they make paints - that paint who need like two days to dry ? We have some paint like that here - we call them "oil" based paint, also on nitro base (that one drys very fast).... if someone can tell me more about this I would be really happy ! :) Thanks in advance...
Uroš Petrović This paint is Rustoleum oil based paint. It didn’t take 2 days to dry it took a few hours in the sun but to be cured enough to buff I waited another day.
Could I use it to spray clear?
Can you go over this with a 2k clear coat? Would that remove the orange peel?
Chris Cardinale I won’t be doing 2k over this since single stage don’t require a clear coat. If I wet sand the paint better I can get rid of all the clear coat which I might do since it’s been requested. Single stage with hardener in it doesn’t require clear because it has a uv protected hardener.
How long does it last? greetings from Argentina
Where did you buy the paint
That's exactly what I was asking about on that other video man awsome job and thanks for all the videos if your ever in dallas hmu I got some coronas for ya!!
thanks
Would you recommend using the gun for clear as well?
Xcentric Lithium I am still experimenting
what type of clear coat did you use to its not scrachable ? where do they sell it at? if its not 2k clear
jesse flz This don’t have clear coat in it ^ it’s not required. When used with hadener it becomes uv resistant and won’t chip or fade. Single stage is awesome stuff.
Moore Motorsports James Dguy what harnerr? they sell jt at walmart?
jesse flz Tractor supply or paint shops. Oreillys should sell it in their paint shop. It’s urethane hardener
Damn... so that gun basically does a Jackson Pollock and pitches paint at stuff. Gnarly.... What is cure time... a year?
Can i use that sprayer with plasti dip ?
I heard people use the cheaper Harbor gun....had good results!
nelda blanco Yea I have used it with good results. My issue was and has always been the small compressor and lack of water separator
What was the nozzle size of this gun?
Can you use this gun to spray bedliner
How long does this method take the paint to dry?
Can we use this gun for raptor liner?
Hey I really enjoy your paint can videos. Where you located? I’d love to have my car painted by you. Ima. Huge fan!
Kevin Andrade Near killeen texas
Moore Motorsports James Dguy awh! I’m all the way I’m NY. Shoot. I was really hopping you would be closer but keep up the good work man! Your videos and results are amazing!
Kevin Andrade Thanks. I have another one coming out hopefully tonight or tomorrow
Nice
Can you do a video where you put a 2k clear coat on the trunk?
Why use a acetone instead of paint thinner?
WeirdJerz3y In my experience with Rustoleum the acetone actually works way better and keeps that gloss look better when using acetone. I have sprayed Rustoleum out of the gun many times just it was my first time with this electric gun. It needed thinned more though that’s 1 reason the orange peel was crazy
I thought your supposed to use mineral spirits with oil base paint
How many types of paints hoy can use whit this gun?
Not gonna lie, that thing has a pretty awful spray pattern. Like a half clogged rattle can nozzle.
Wonder if there would be some way to modify it to get better atomization. Would help a lot with the orange peel too.
Either way, you can still get results on a budget! Def needs a lot of finish work after, but it happens.
802 Garage It was because the paint was to thick i needed to thin it out some. My first time painting on the trunk it wasn’t that bad. So I think I just need to thin it out more next time.
Makes sense. Thanks for the awesome budget minded videos!
my comment is im going to harbor freight in the morning lol
Hey what gardener would you use on rustoleum paint to
Daniel Partida i use cheap tractor supply hardener
What's the name of the hardener I want to buy some this week to finish this car off. It's taking forever to do it the spray can way for me because I have to do it in sections. So I guess I will have half spray can and the other from a can
