- The oldschool VHS series The Comic Book Greats hosted by Stan Lee. In this episode Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whlice Portacio, and Jim Lee take you through their process of how to make a comic book,
Back in the 90s I use to think These guys were drawing machines only in my dreams would I be an artist. 30 years later I've made my living as an artist thanks to these guys.
That's amazing!
Hell yeah
In comic books or?
Wow😊
Wholesome
So funny how Todd just says what not to do and it’s all the things that Rob does 😂
😅 I know...🙄
There's definitely a lot of shade from Todd towards Rob.
@@FinnFLyes and it was unnecessary. Those constant jabs would get old quick
@@theophany1770 Liefeld has a podcast called Robservations, in an episode he explains it as Todd keep referring to Rob as 'little buddy'.
they look like a young matt damon and mathew McConaughey.
Richie D they kinda do
Nice observation
Matt Damon, yes...but Todd could pass for Christian Bale 100%
Todd McFarlane's mullet is more talented than Christian Bale.
Looks almost like mark Wahlberg
Seeing the co creators of both deadpool, venom and spawn drawing together... it makes me a happy boy.
Whilce Portacio is the creator of Bishop from X-Men and Grail and Wetworks, Whilce did work with Todd on Spawn
I would love to see Todd Mcfarlane re-start The Comic Book Greats.
You mean Celebrity Death Match?
Except there are seemingly no greats. Should start one called "Searching for the Comic Book Greats"😂
@@molagbal5313 there's a few out there. Ken Lashley is doing some great work right now and watching him work it's like watching a comic book in reverse the way he draws is mind-blowing
@@molagbal5313 Jim Lee and Todd are still kicking. Phillip Tan, Tom King, Jorge Jimenez
@@molagbal5313 There are still greats in the comic book industry but not like there were when Stan did this.Because you have to remember that when this came out,a lot of the legendary creators of comics(Stan included, obviously) were still alive.
im no fan of Rob Liefeld's style.. but he comes off as such a nice and humble human being, that it's impossible for me not to like him as a person
I agree
You can't help but feel like he's trying his best even when he totally fucks up.
he's been an ass recently
that nigga is rich now
@@patrickimperial579 what'd he do?
Todd: You don't want to draw small and then blow it up because it gets stiff...
Rob: That's exactly what I do...
xDDD i died lmao
Todd just knows he's wiser and better than pretty much everyone on the planet, that's all. Rob was good at getting rich.
@@rm9308 What do you mean when you say better? Do you mean a better artist? Because if you do,I would say to that that Todd McFarlane was and IS a good artist but he wasn't even the best artist out of the Image Comics founders(I would say that Jim Lee was and then it was McFarlane after him and then everyone else after them with Rob Liefeld being the least talented out of the seven men).
@@JR-ju3kj Whilice Portacio if not tied with Lee is a CLOSE second, some might put him number 1, a GENIUS artist and of course Lee is a force of nature, Silvestri amazing too.
@@sezwah1414 Whilce Portacio and Marc Silvestri are amazing artists, without question.Erik Larsen, too. All of the Image founders are gifted artists in their own right.....except for Rob Liefeld but even Liefeld as much as people love to hate him and his work, can still draw.I'll stick by my opinion but I can certainly see why you would think Whilce Portacio if not tied with Lee.is a close second.
I love how natural this format is, no huge cuts or editing. It really feels unscripted.
It isn't scripted, dumbass.
It was!
You can tell Jim Lee is a cut above the rest.
And Whilce Portacio? How come nobody is showing love for this genius?
I always thought that Jim Lee was the best artist out of all seven of the Image founders.
J R
I totally agree on that statement , I’m still a fan of them all as illustrators. I learned to draw comic book style from them all back in the 90’s.
Jim was an artistic god! Todd was definitely the creative genius and Whilce was flawless. Rob however was all of us. By that I mean he was just at the right place at the right time and it could've just as easily been any of us poser teens at the time.
Lee is a legend
so. much. denim!
hello, past me.
book em denim
Stone wash kingdom.
Maybe because Liefeld did a Levi's Commercial.
Lol past, past me’s are so weird.
I love the mulleted Mcfarlane asking Liefield " Did you pay for that haircut?"
I would love to see a McFarlane/Liefeld sitcom...
So true
I think that's just their real lives
Just buy SPAWN
k
From the creators of Seinfeld: Mcfeld.
When they're talking about anatomy and hiding body parts behind other things when they're giving you some difficulty, I couldn't help but look at Liefeld standing there with that guilty but blank "play it cool" look on his face.
hahah xD it took Liefeld a decade to get slightly better at anatomy and story telling
🤣🤣
@@pamir2593well his way of drawing the anatomy is his style. You instantly know it when you see it.
Gotta figure out a way to hide those feet
I know, just draw more pockets and abs to distract the reader
@@breakingthelaw7974this is the truth. Like it or not Rob had a distinct style that defined that era.
You will never see something like this today
Having artists like these is so rare nowdays in comics
Todd, Rob, Jim, etc.
This is a moment in time that will never ever be repeated. Ever. It's like Amateur athletes not being paid or 9/11. It was a perfect storm and those were the guys at the forefront of the revolution in comics.
jim lees thinking what the fuc, are these guys doing
I'm sure that he probably thought that throughout most of his time at Image Comics!
Ha! Ha!
Todd said, “give us a good IMAGE”, lmaoooooooo! They already knew
True story, my brother worked and briefly lived with Jim Lee when Image was first getting started. I never met him, but only heard good things about him. He's also an incredible artist.
I’m a 90s kid but I’ve never seen this show. I was over seas. Missed a lot. Luckily a co worker put me on to this recently. I’m not an illustrator but I make art so to see masters at work is always a pleasure. Todd is one of my fav artist of all time
It's crazy seeing my favorite comic book artist (Todd McFarlane) confidentially admit that he's no good in comparison to these other guys, mostly Jim Lee
Whilce Portacio is also brilliant
@@tovolume Lee ALWAYS acknowledges that!!!
@@tovolumeI have yet to see him draw!🤔
@@eugeniosabater8449Todd's bullshite artist. He's coping out all the time.
@@eugeniosabater8449if you haven't already there's video of his drawing here on RUclips just search his name up. He's actually Pretty solid, honestly could give today's artist a run for their money.
Jim Lee is clearly the best
I remember ordering this video from a Wizard Comics magazine. I was so excited and watched it countless times.
I miss the early 90s.
Love how Jim lee comes in and not only teaches us something but also teaches the rest of the artists something! 😂 Jim lee is by far the better artist of the bunch
Jim even admitted in the video what he does is old news. Tried and true though.
I agree 💯❗️
@@theghastlygamer5326 There is a difference between old news and classical training. They are concepts that have stood the test of time for hundreds of years.

Rob: _mental note_
Jim Lee is the GOAT
why does rob look like future trunks from dbz
Tyler Nickel Dam never saw that before but its true.
It was the 90s
It's that sweet 90s bowl cut haha
Because he is
"It doesnt matter if 17 pages of 20 pages suck" thats real pride in his own work right there!
The chemistry between all of them just makes me smile
Anyone hear Todd secretly drop an "Image" joke??? 😂😂😂
I noted that, was curious about it,
So they must have quit marvel by the time they filmed this, but pretended to still be working there for this video
11:00
This is the one time I will ever say that Rob beats Todd, Todd's hair is scarier than spawn
They should bring this stuff back!! To inspire a new generation
Absolutely
9:34 the most inspirational speech i’ve heard in awhile.
what you really need to start in this industry is the right Acid Wash Denim.
Just because someone doesn’t draw well that doesn’t mean you should hate their guts rob is still a nice guy cut him some slack he invented Deadpool
iBISKIT 1 BIG FACTS
He didnt! he just made a clone of Deathstroke!
@@darwinsimmons7691 some of his drawings are actually pretty good especially now since he's sorta perfected it. Have you seen his new absolute Carnage cover? It's absolutely badass
And Cable.
@@Jose-se9pu Deadpool's long since evolved into being much more than that. Now, he's arguably cooler and more popular than Deathstroke(even though I like both characters).
Jim Lee is one of my favorite artists. His style is so damn consistent. Todd has incredible flair with his art, almost like a graffiti.
Rob Liefeld: i'm known to fake [anatomy] a lot.
...
BAHAA You don't say! Such an honest guy!
Jim Lee is an absolute legend. The way he just animates off of a single pose, or concept thought is truly just remarkable.
It's heartwarming to see just how freely McFarlane is sharing so much inside valuable.
Rob is good at hiding the feet😂 love this though, they are all absolute bests! Ohh the 90s! Best times for comics
80's BY FAR!!! EVEN if it was JUST represented by Comic YEAR ZERO 1986! It would be 80's...PERFECTION Of an ART FORM since DESTROYED by Marvel STUDIOS!!!/DISNEY>HOLLYWEIRD!!!
90s was the mass decline of comics, ironically , these guys were right at the center !
Todd Mcfarlane with the MULLET trying to talk $#!÷ on someone elses haircut!! XD
Lolololololol yes!!!!
😅
I like it how they're clearly just kids drawing super heroes, very nice!
Jim lee enters like a gansta jo jo jo hahahaha! awesome video :)
true O.G.
OMG. Jim Lee and Todd Mcfarlane in one show. I found my paradise.
my 14yr old self jumping with joy right now
its amazing how todd is doing the most talking and directing but the least drawing
True Hero he doesn't draw period
True Hero rob wants to knock his out
rick Jimenez I seen him draw wtf you talking
he has a youtube channel where he draws.
Yeah, you're right. He should do ALL the talking and ALL the drawing.
Wow no love for Whilce Portacio? Is anybody going to talk about him, this guy is also brilliant and should be given credit
Oh my god, you have been writing this shit on every fucking comment thread. You like Portacio, we get it. Now get the fuck out.
Agreed, tf is your deal? No one gives a shit, clearly.
Just browsing through their work, Whilce is a beast and a bit unlucky I've never heard of him. I think people just tend to like people they can relate with. Seems your guy despite his amazing work really wasn't able to break through. Looking at Liefeld's work, the guy is objectively out of his league here yet he got work and has clout.
I like his art
@@jelellyy Whilce created the character Bishop of X-Men and Grail and Wetworks and he was one of the seven co founders of Image Comics
It hilarious when Jim came in to school anatomy. Also cool to see the others humble and honest.
Oh look it's Christian Bale and Matt Damon
Shit now I can’t unsee it
Bale could probably mimic Todd's voice, too.
@@mikemars2112 how do you know?
@@brucewayne2184 I don't "know," which is why I said probably. This is based on Bale's ability to do different accents and voices.
Todd looks like Cher
43:03 "Man, imagine if we all get together and formed a company" lol he didnt know
They've already being doing their own comics at Image at that point 😂 He was just making a joke
This was filmed after they left or close to it. They already had the image idea at this point.
I loved all the friendly ball busting and Todd’s Canadian Tuxedo. I hope those sketch pages are framed somewhere!
love mcfarlanes mullet and canadian tuxedo. this is definitely the 90s
Jim Lee is one of my favorite artists. He got me into reading X-Men comics that were drawn by him. In fact, I'm learning to draw characters in his style (most notably Jane Lane).
I love how mcfarlane is just fucking with liefeld the whole time
Poor Rob, that's how I'd feel trying to compete with my idol....my artistic god Jim Lee!!
36:51 "That's why your anatomy Sucks!" - now that was brutal😆
Todd is a narcissist of the highest order. A comic art whiz, but narcissistic nonetheless
I used to have this video on VHS
Whilce is the most underrated talent of those Image 7. That guy made beautiful inks. He improved Jim Lee's pencils, and I think he's the only guy who could do that.
that's because he used to just emulate jim lee's art instead of finding his own voice.
Whilce had a major personal issues that threw wrenches in his rise to stardom. He was at the right time and place, but couldn't keep up.. was a shame because I LOVED Wetworks.
My God! This is invaluable! Thanks SO MUCH for posting this. Not sure why people think to give these guys flack. There is no doubt, these guys were at the top of their game teaching us how to do this stuff! True modern masters! Ha, love the banter between them too!
These are young kids at the top of their game passing it along... so damn sure anyone hating hasn't done half the things these guys did - in the 90s alone.
Jose Carlos Rivera Jr. lack of fundamentals like anatomy, perspective, composition, rule of thirds, golden ratio and stuff will get you flack, this mostly about Leifeld's artwork. Not all of it but still,I'd suggest look his stuff up and just simply try to do the poses or compare the anatomy to real life, you'll physically feel why people give him flack. It really doesn't seem like he learned all the basics "rules" before he started breaking them
And they were kinda "responsible" for the comicbook crash in the 90s..
Why were they "kinda responsible"?
I think Liefeld is an untalented hack but since when do you need to follow rules to create art? I guess I would hardly call what this guy does art but still, that is a pretty silly to think you need to follow what others tell you to.
Frogwai agreed, however I'm having to go over the fundamentals to improve on what I lack.
IM COMPLETELY HONEST HERE
I really like Rob's style
Only thing i dont like is that he makes things super big sometimes
THANK YOU! THE ESSENCE OF CREATING ART-you guys nailed it, enable it! I mean we all have comic artists-and artists in general-we know and love, but their works are mainly shown as finished, the awe-inspiring products of their prodigious talent that somehow arrived on earth; their methods and strokes are not broken down like they are here. It is SO GREAT to get down to the actual nuts-n-bolts, like you're so blessedly generously doing, of how to start making art, giving to us the wonderful gift of being able to start CREATING. This enabling is really important, everybody who does art knows this. Gratefully, thanks again So Much!
This is old but i would love to watch this over and over.. Jim - when it comes to realistic anatomy is by far the best, Whilce: on the other hand has a combination of realistic and contained exaggerations on his artworks but still the best, Tob is what i call a sexy type curvaceous artist, Rob made me a fan when i first had my Image comics things look differently comparing to my collection of Marvels and Dcs - but that was back then when i haven't fully understood how the anatomy works, yet i still love the inks though he sucks he still have a special place in my heart.
These are the artist I grew up with. These guys are the real fantastic 4.
Exactly
And this vid is better then the movies of the FF
This video is so fascinating. Seeing Todd and Rob, artists I never cared for, talking about the process and showing examples is great. I write, I don't draw, but it's still educational to see artists working.
Love 90s
Rob Leifeld got me into comics being born in 86. He gets a alot of hate but brought fire in stories and now Deadpool is basically the most popular merch Icon
I don't know how, but seeing artists at their workspaces really motivates me.
It’s funny how Todd is like the bad kid of the bunch and Jim’s the page boy, love them both thought.
We need a 2020's version of this show
yeah thanks for posting these videos, I had this one and I've must've watched it a thousand times
I love this. There is a collaborative magic here that you could cut with a knife. So wonderful to see Stan the Man behind these talented guys that absolutely have a plan a process and the motivation to make it happen.
Jim Lee and Whlice Portacio appear at 33:32
This is some very valuable and priceless video, thanks for sharing!
19:51 McFarlane saying, "It's got a couple of 1990s-type-stuff on it..." while still in the '90s
valuable information here, thanks for the upload
RIP Stan!
Man this brings back memories!!! I had the Jim Lee vhs tape and thought I was in HOG-HEAVEN!!!! LOL!!! I must have watched it a gazillion times!!! Wish they'd come out with some similar dvds but undated tho.
I loved these as a kid. Wore the tapes out.
The Comic Book Greats are great guys showing the kids how to make comics it is awesome!
So awesome... I wish there was enough time and lawns in my youth to provide not only the supplies and time I needed to do what I had done, but to also afford the inspiring comics and these products(I think I remember the vhs's being like $50-100 or in even more expensive sets) and trips to comic conventions(which were not what they are now, I remind you[thank God, expense wise]))...
Man, how I wish there was youtube when I was in my teens.
That said, no time like the present.
Thanks for sharing, everyone. This is so helpful and inspiring.
10:44 IMAGE COMICS. nuff said
People can complain about Liefeld all they want, but keep in mind that he was accepted in a time when publishers did not just allow anyone to join the industry.
This was awesome. Just some dudes hanging out and drawing. 😎
I'm so glad I srumbled on this. Denim and talent.
Great group of guys right there
One of my favorite vids, of all time. (Thanks for sharing!) These guys made comics, really exciting, ridiculous, enjoyable and disastrous. I'm glad I got to live through much of it. Comics today..... not my cup of tea.
Jim Lee is the most talented one here and has more knowledge about anatomy and design!
5 dislikes? How could someone dislike this great video.
Different strokes for different folks . Plus most people lived wasted lives do disliking the masters of art gives them a slight dopamine hit
Rob held up the Hunt pen and looked at it in a way you and I would look at a unicorn. Never knew it existed. Also love how neither Rob or Todd used it. Why, you make ask? Well I think its obvious.
Thank for upload! Awesome video!
They already had image comics planned up. Secretly between them. They kept dropping hints and flat out saying "image comics" a few times. This was filmed in 91 and they all quit and officially formed image comics in 92. They somehow all got onto this show and took the money from it and funded image.
I look at these masters and I see just a bunch of kids from the block. Such down to earth guys.
So young and super talented!!
Thanks for uploading that, it was definitely entertaining 👍😁
This is really interesting!!! I do wish that there was less consensus regarding the need for higher quality materials though, I spent a large time worrying about mediums and markers and crap when I first started out more so then just having fun and trying to improve. My art’s improved still to a point where I’m satisfied, but it really would have saved a lot of time and money to focus on just working instead of have then a pen. If your art isn’t to a point you like it, a more expensive or higher quality material isn’t going to help, unless it’s a matter of you having an extremely large pen when you want very thin lineart. In that case, you should experiment with the cheaper ones until you get better, and if you want a more expensive one, get it, but don’t spend all your time worrying about materials. Just work on the fundamentals and have fun until you need to care for work’s sake.
This is a masterclass ❤❤❤
Wow, this is quite the time capsule! All these guys are so young and I like how honest and real they are about the art and the industry. It makes this video very fun and still educational. Is this after they left Marvel comics? Dang, those references they make to image comics is bold considering how generous Stan Lee was to have them on his show; though, I suppose, not surprising considering their young age. An older comics creator may have shown more tact. Though I'm sure Comic Book Greats wasn't necessarily Marvel centric.
Todd was the only one not working for Marvel at this time. He quit with SM 16 just before this was filmed. The others were still doing work for Marvel, including Larsen on ASM and Valentino on GotG, but it wasn't long before each of them were essentially "fired" from their Marvel work for starting up Image, and not allowed to wrap up any storylines they wanted to complete.

I thought I was the only person that caught that that right there tells you that they were discussing that way before anybody thought about it or thought they were thinking about it rather salute to those guys for having the balls to stand up to a corporation and knocking out the f****** Park they took something like 60% of the sales with them how in the world of these guys breaking records for the amount of comics sold and these assholes are telling them how they're supposed to draw and what they're supposed to do it's a testament to genius all across the world all of the Geniuses that were told they didn't know what they were doing or they would never amount to anything this one's for you
They're having a lot of fun. Looks like a cool job to have as long as you can stay on top of churning out lots of work to meet all your deadlines. But if you love comics and have a talent for drawing or artist abilities this is the dream job. I would love to be an action figure creator, too. I would love to be able to make the absolute most awesome figures that match perfectly the pages of the comics or maybe the movies, too.
