Yup, I coached hockey 15 years. Coached a number of these Sid Crosby kids with lawnmower parents. Out of all the skaters, I had 4-5 that got 4 year D1 scholarships and 2-3 that made it to the ECHL, with one signing with the Wings, playing 2 games. By 23-24 most if not all were playing in the beer league. Key is to just enjoy the game and have fun because you won't believe how many kids are better than yours when you hit the "real team" try-outs in a few years.

My son is 7 years old playing hockey in Canada I saw lot of talented kids at least the same level as kid on the video and nobody created such stories on RUclips. My kids peewee team just played the palm beach breakers in a 200x85 tournament. They do have a lot of skilled euros (swedish, czech, and Russians) who train in both EU and Florida as well as good local players and teams. Saying this kid is NHL bound is a great dream and the parents seem like they can afford all the lessons, programs, travel and training $300-400k post tax $ to at least get him into the circuit where he may be scouted. At least until the next recession and then we'll see. I would definitely be open minded and keep options open.
I think Mom doesn't fully understand the level of competition for either international hockey OR academics for brain surgery...
He'll have to keep it up for the next 7-10 years before he gets good, right now he has an edge because he can skate better and shoot high when no one else can, which doesn't indicate true talent. Once everyone else can do these things, the talent separation will occur when he can play the entire/most of game with his head up making good decisions and seeing dangerous passing lanes, and playing hard on the body as opposed to skating by defenders who can't skate backwards. Also, no video of his off puck play, which is 80% of the game, only of him scoring breakaways and deking, which is what most players with AB advantage can do.
Keep the dream alive but realize it's at least another 10 years and $300k of non-stop training. This all assumes he grows to be 6'2, 200lbs. If not.... At least it was fun watching your kid play a sport he loves.

    • @roadrunner2550
      @roadrunner2550 3 месяца назад

First, If you think you need "$300-$400k Post tax to at least get him into the circuit where he may be scouted" you are 100% misguided. If you are good, scouts will find you.
Based on my local area 401 corridor (From Windsor to Quebec City) which is a hockey powerhouse, and more Specifically (Windsor-Detroit area) I can tell you this..
Top Guys Ever from our Area:
Bob Probert (46th overall in 1983 NHL Draft) - Raised in his teens by a single mother. His dad was a Windsor Police Officer but passed away with heart problems.
Ed Jovanovski (1st Overall in 1994 NHL Draft) - Didn't even play competitive travel until 13 years old. Played soccer before that.
Kyle Wellwood (OHL's Top Scorer in 2001, 5th Round in 2001 NHL Draft. - Didn't play AAA until Bantam.
Zack Kassian (2010 Memorial Cup Champions, 13th Overall Pick 2009 NHL Draft) - Started Hockey at 8 years old right after his dad passed away. Grew-up with single parent and a really awesome brother who helped him.
Eric Wellwood (2010 CHL Memorial Cup Champions, 6th Round in 2009 NHL Draft. - Didn't play AAA until Bantam.
Aaron Ekblad (1st Overall & OHL Exceptional Player Status 2011, 1st Overall in 2014 NHL Draft) - 1 Year ahead of Connor McDavid who did the same the very Next Year. - Didn't play on any "Super Team" from the Detroit or GTHL but instead trained in the Windsor area and Played for Sun County Panthers. Was also trained in part by Power Tech Hockey. Btw if you want honest, accurate info i suggest their podcast on YT.
      Still not convinced??
Let's look at the last NHL Draft..
2 Players from the area Drafted:
      1) Konnor Smith (#97 Overall in 2023 NHL Draft) - Konnor's Path was not linear. Even went down to AA from AAA in PeeWee. wmha.net/Articles/13029/Road_to_Success_Konnor_Smith_Drafted_to_Peterborough_Petes/
      2) Andrew Gibson (#42 Overall in 2023 NHL Draft) - Played AA for the LaSalle Sabres until he was in Bantam.
Conclusion: Yes, hockey is an expensive sport, but you don't have to spend a massive amount of money or even play in certain places for scouts to find you. Scouts are incredibly good at what they do. If you are really good, they will know who you are.
Oh and by the way... Nikita Kutcherov - 5'11", Nathan Mackinnon 6'0", Connor McDavid 6"1, David Pasternak 6'0", Artemi Panarin 6'0" all top 10 scores in the NHL right now. I'd say Cole Caufield and Alex Debrincat at 5'8" are not doing too bad.
Not to mention Sid the Kid at 5'11".
Not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog, Domi (also a Windsor Area player lol)
Side Note: No disrespect to Whistle - I think you have a VERY entertaining channel. One thing i might change though is to be more realistic about the titles. If you think it through - Look at Crosby, McDavid, Mackinnon at double the boys age (14 years old). Don't think a 7-year old can compete with that. Just my opinion. Very entertaining never-the-less!

When I was 7 my parents we're saying "well.. he's either gonna be a drug dealer or a addicted to crack".
Looking back at it all.. man did i ever come up short.

Skating can dominate young players but eventually you need the hockey IQ to make it to the next level. This youngster needs a real good coach someone to teach him the tricks and how to outsmart his opponents. All sports are full of mind games you need to be deceptive you need your opponents to be second guessing your every move.
I remember going to tournaments and seeing the other teams warm up was intimidating but once th egames began they did not have the hockey IQ they were just flashy practics players.
part of the deal is toughness strength having a great shot and reading the ice understanding what is happening at every second. You will know if your kid has it when they tell you they want to play where ever it helps the TEAM win.Typically kids have the mentality they want to score and be the highlight reel but being a wining player far succeeds over highlight reels.
