Man of Mystery - The Shadows Cover by Steve Reynolds

This for me is one of the hardest Shadows songs from their early days to play. I really struggle on this one so i thought id get my head down and try and learn it with the intention of doing it in the band so here is one of 200 takes i have done the last couple of days! Its always good to put these videos up so you can all see i struggle as much as others a lot of them time. I will get it right one day! Any way here it is!

Hi Steve...I am also learning this song...about 3/4 way there. Definately my most difficult Shadows song to play thus far but what a great song especially the fast solo and muted sound. Really worth the effort. Cheers Steve !!!

Well done Steve, this take is note perfect, Hank makes all the Shadows tunes look easy to play, but they are far from easy to learn to this level.
They say the guitar is an easy instument to learn, but hard to master, ay 65 i am still learning!

Hi Steve I don’t know if you have done a cover of it ........but LOVE ‘THE SAVAGE’! ........any chance of you doing it please? My late mum got me guitar lessons when i was 8 thanks to me playing ‘Apache’ and ‘FBI’ over and over on our ancient reel to reel tape player! My dear late father later bought me my first electric guitar......a Telecaster copy. I am currently building a custom Hank Marvin Red Strat. I have Arthritis in my left hand now so guitar playing is difficult hence why i changed to keyboards.😢 But I live in hope i can play the Strat once its finished! Love your channel and have bought myself the kit to record as you do with backing tracks etc, but I would not DARE put them on You Tube😂 I met and spoke with Hank many years ago........a true highlight of my 60 years on earth! KEEP IT UP, I grew p with the Shadows!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧👍🏻

Hi Steve nice job, a great version of one of the shads classics, i tried this one once and got lost with it within a few minutes lol, i found Apache a challenge when i was learning that as its the first Shadows song i chose to learn but this one topped that challenge list by a mile, I enjoyed your version.

Excellent Steve! Not a criticism as im not a patch on you now...........but when i used to play this in our band back in the 80’s the opening 2 notes on the bottom ‘E’ string, I used the edge of my hand to deaden the string and play it up close to the bridge, with ‘bridge’ pickup selected, (which I notice you are using) Ive watched Hank play this and he appears to play it that way? What hardness picks do you use, I use Fender thin, very bendy.

Thanks very much! I must confess i have never noticed that! Ill have to check it out but would make sense as the record sounds muted. I use George Dennis 1.05 usually as they give a nice balance between thick tones and playability.

I thought this video was good, but then at 1:21 I realized that unfortunately you don't know the solo well, it's in a different key. You play in minor, but it's in major, so I don't like it!
