    Great overview and presentation! A small correction though: there IS a Victorinox 84mm with a nail file: Victorinox Sportsman. Essentially a shorter Spartan with the small blade replaced by a nail file. A sweet knife! Oh, and the tip of the nail file also works as a Philips driver with better and narrower reach than the one on the can opener👍

      Vær hilset, brother Don 👊🏼
      I enjoy the Sportsman, but also the Cadet with a nail file too 😉
      As a reviewer, I can attest it is quite easy to make the odd mistake, when your working the tool(s) behind the camera and talking at the same time.
      I have a high regard for Tobias, who is a piller in our community, and his knowledge is wide & deep.
      🔪 🗡
      I invite you to do a review on your favourite SAK. You shall have our support and we welcome new people, who have good insight into the world of steel + SAK's.
      All the best - Skol! 🍻

    An absolutely brilliant video, i carry a pioneer x as my edc alongside an original swiss tool.
    I like and regularly need the scissors that the pioneer x offers. The large flat head/ pry is also just about large enough to be used regularly. The pioneer is what i pull out if i want to quicly open a box or packet, trim a broken finger nail, do first aid like cutting a gauze bandage or poping a bottle cap.
    The swiss tool is worn on the hip of my trousers using the pocket clip, i use it daily for heavier work tasks in particular the very thick pry tool and the Philips come in incredibly handy. Both of these tools are heavy duty enough to take real tourq and open very tight seized screws, the philips in particular has a good deep reach. The serrated blade knife is a really important tool for me as i frequently need to cut rope, rubber coolant line hose etc. I usually use the other tools regularly on it to.
    The real advantage of a swiss army knife in my opinion is the pry tool, so easily in real life to damadge the tip of a knife prising things and once you have had the scissors you find them essential.

    It's easy to forget the needle. The compact has it pre-installed behind the corkscrew but at least modern 91mm have a slot (hole) for them.

    • @MSkachenite
      @MSkachenite 3 месяца назад +2

      I took out the original needle (pin) and change it to sewing needle with 1 meter of thread. The ending of thread I put arount the corcscrew. So I got small emergency sewing kit, too.

    • @LouisWinthorpe622
      @LouisWinthorpe622 2 месяца назад

      @@MSkacheniteI wanted to do that, too.
      I measured the diameter of the original pin at 0.6mm and I couldn't find a needle that was the same, that fit the same. I could only find 0.5 mm ones. I tried it but the fit was too loose and it went in so far, only the tip of the head was showing and guess what? I found the first genuine use for my original Victorinox pin, right there! I used it to poke through the top of the head of the needle that was, only just, peeping out the hole in my scales and I managed to pull the thing out.
      So original Victorinox pin, for me.
      (I plan on carrying needle and thread in a capsule I have on any EDC key ring I keep in my jacket pocket, where I keep my Nailclip 580, too).

    What everyone calls a "wire stripper" is actually a solid core wire bender. Part of the confusion comes from the fact that the inside edge of the caplifter used to be sharpened like an electrician's blade. This was the actual "wire stripper" and the notch was the bender.

    Great look and comparison of Swiss Army knives Tobias, very thorough. Being a big fan of the metal saw on a SAK, I've been hoping to see one on a Pioneer specifically because it has a sturdier frame. Alas, I've grown old doing so and I don't think it will happen. I've been lucky to find and collect most other SAK's with a metal saw (this has been a personal quest due to an incident I was involved with as a younger man that for the lack of a metal saw and the stupidity of it's owner, a wonderful pet's life was sadly lost). So a SAK Ranger is always within reach in my car, one in the pack on the trail/in camp, and one around the workbench. If you have any Victorinox-influencing magic (like you do with the folks in TN) please work a little to get them to put a metal saw on a Pioneer. That together with a wood saw would be an excellent 4 layer outdoors Pioneer, really no necessity for scissors out there. Thanks my friend. 😄

      I think the Compact is ideal for office or urban carry but then it’s 2-3 times more expensive than a Spartan. Yes for that, you get a pen, the small screwdriver, and a pair of scissors and some other little doo-dads but I can see how the cost could be prohibitive. I love the Spartan.

    I'm really into the slim SAKs like the Waiter and the Alox Bantam. They seem to get the most use in my book because of the combi tool and the decent size blades. Being slim they fit everywhere, shirt pockets, jean pockets etc. making them unobtrusive. Of course like most Swiss Army Knife people, I've have bunch of other models that are in bags and backpacks but I always have that Waiter or Bantam on my person at all times. Even my wife likes 'em because of the can opener on the combi tool.

    The pioneers are great knives but I prefer the plastic scales simply because of being able to replace them. They have more versatile tool choices, customizing parts available. In addition, without back tools, the Pioneers are missing important features. You give up tools for aluminum scales and pay more for less tools. 🤔

    I have a number of Victorinox knives, of which my favourites are the spartan (for everyday) and the forester (for outdoors). I've always avoided models with Philips screwdrivers because most cross-head screws I come across are actually Pozidrive type, and the two are not the same. I've avoided scissors too until now, but I've changed my mind about that recently, which is why my next purchase will most likely be the Pioneer X in silver. @@KnifeChatswithTobias Yes sorry I should have said 93mm Alox. But if you compare say the cap opener tool on the 93mm Alox vs the 91mm SAK, it's quite a bit more robust on the Alox. Of course the trade off being no scale tools and no back tools, but IMO if you can get the right tool selection for your use case in an Alox then it's the right choice, if you can't get your needed tool set in Alox then of course the normal models reign supreme.

      The usually have the type of name on the box. but when you think about it, most knives do not actually have the model name on them, especially when it comes to traditional knives.

      @@KnifeChatswithTobias All my Buck Knives, ESSE, Ontraio, and Becker Knives have the model on the blades. The problem with SAKs is that almost all look the same. My Sweden Mora's which I also have a lot of is like SAKs all look the same and no model numbers. I will say my made in Spain knives are like the Americans and have it on the blade.

      Wow! The price is definitely going up since I bought my Silver Alox Cadet! I just checked Amazon US and the price was $45. (which coincides with the current exchange rate.) it is I think I paid around $30 new about 10 years ago.

    The Farmer, is a great outdoor carry, which I often rotate 🏕 🪵 🔥

      I agree about Anne. I think we should all visit her channel and ask her to show here collection. I have a feeling she doesn't think of the Knives and multitools she owns as a collection or of herself as a collector. Just because she uses them doesn't mean she isn't a collector.
