UPDATE: Now I can go a whole practice day only missing a couple times. I'm now aiming to do more powerful serves and chosing where to send the ball, not only get it over the net.
The steps I always keep in my head when serving. 1. Get in form 2. Weight on your back foot 3. Hold ball shoulder width w/ your serving arm 4. Bow in arrow back with your serving arm 5. Toss the volleyball right in frount of your serving hand 6. Step through w/ your back foot
Litteraly I've tried this so much but when I'm keeping something in my head in to focused on what's in my head, I have trouble throwing the ball then stepping forward. Plzz help me loll anything would help I'm just tired of trying so many things.
Hey Koko, i’m a sophomore who started being really interested in volleyball a couple months ago and started playing by myself all the time and did a camp this summer and tomorrow i’m officially trying out for my schools team for the first time and the one thing i can’t seem to get down is my serve and i think this video helped me tremendously along with a lot of your other videos:)
I wish I had this video when I first started last year, but I'm happy you have it, good luck and have lots of fun when you make the team(knock on wood)

YOUR A LIFESAVER!! I’m 13 and a beginner and I can’t join a team so I joined a club and they never got into the details on how to serve so this helped me so much!
Good tips, I think the toss is often not stressed enough as its absolutely crucial for young players, but missing anything about feet. Some of the biggest problems I see with young players are starting with shoulders facing the net which leaves only a weak arm swing for power, stepping with the wrong foot forward which again means no power as hips and shoulders are already rotated, or if they do set up with the correct foot back stepping through with that foot which rotates hips and shoulders early killing power and making for inconsistent contact. I try to get them to push forward maintaining upper body posture with the hitting elbow up and back until they are swinging, pinning the toes of the back foot to the ground until contact, which keeps hips and shoulders open while starting forward and able to be part of power generation. Power starts at the foot pushing into the floor, way too many miss out on using all the big muscles on the way up and just try to hit it with arm only. Keep good tips coming, love to see young players improve! 👍
Something my coach pointed out (in my first year of volleyball) that I had to do was have my hitting arm in the air BEFORE I throw up the toss. I just wanted to say that in case it wasn't clear to anyone!
thank you for these drills! our coaches in camp started making us do these awhile ago and I was struggling on being consistent with my tosses. I'll give them a try once I've fully rested.
I remember I watched the video on how to overhand serve and I did it so much, got so good I learned jump serving, became the best server on my team, and as a bonus I became the libero of a 15 Smack team.
I’ve been struggling with my overhand, spring season I could serve over the net easily, but now that fall season started they barely ever go over, so thank you
I was in the volleyball team last year and I’ve been trying to overhand serve for a long time. No matter how much j try I’ve never been able to do it, so i hope this video helps me out!

Coach KoKo please make a how to calm volleyball try out nerves I’m really nervous for my next try out more then all my other ones I have always been excepted. But I’m still really nervous. Thanks Coach KoKo you are the best
A tip my coach told me was that before you serve, always check the height of your elbow. She said one of her girls would always look behind her to make sure her serving hand was raised before she swung.
All these tips are so helpful and helped me get my serve but I feel like something that some don’t understand is your arm’s position hitting the ball. If you find your arm coming from off the side and spinning while in the air, you aren’t hitting it right. Always picture the ball as a high-five. Your arm should be right over your shoulder when you hit the ball. It’ll help the ball go straighter and help following through!
I have a HUGE problem with serving and actually being able to get it over the net, and it seems like im never able to get any power behind my arms no matter how many tutorials I watch and I have tryouts soon. HELP ME PLEASE
@LinhNguyen-kx9jx I didn't make it. Thanks for asking, I had a pretty good tryout though perfect score on everything except serving even then I got an ok score on it like 5/10
I personally struggle with overhand serving and I’ve been playing for 4 years ( I’m 13 ) so when I have to overhand serve I like to add a little jump to make sure it gets over because I know I have the strength.
ty for this koko!! I'm a setter on my schools team, which means I'm on a LOT of the time. Sadly, my coach has to sub me out when its my turn to serve, because I simply can't get my serve to go far enough. I'd really like to learn to get my overhand serve over the net, so that I don't have to be subbed out when its my turn to serve. I really like playing backrow, so I hope I get to more if I learn it. thanks!
You'll get it! I have the same problem 😭 it never goes far enough but i know it's because my hand placement's wrong but i can't get it right. But anyways, any luck serving over the net?
A method I use it’s to put my hand next to my ear, it kind of looks like your ninja about karate chop stuff lol, but if you swing around faster for me I was poor power into my serves.
I have this weird problem when I overhand serve. I do this thing where my hand like wiggles backwards then forwards, it messes up my serve, but it’s a habit and I can’t stop doing it even when I try! Luckily it’s starting to go away.
I have a tournament this week and I want to get that overhand serve for the match! I could seem to get that strength so I’m working on that for Sunday!!
My serves are a 60 40 chance. I toss the ball high because I jump and I keep my hand firm until contact and my height of my jump helps get it across but 🤷♀️
