- With all the Buzz about The New Golden SoFlat Acrylic Painting Range, I definitely wanted to compare it to the so-called 'Blackest Black' Stuart Semple's Black 3.0!
I love new Art Supplies so any excuse to play suits me! I love using Acrylics are a versatile base for my Oil Paintings, and I even experiment with leaving some of the Black showing in the timelapse painting at the end of this video.

@@LizGridleyArtist Your video inspired me to finally do a comparison. Here's my review:
I did a test with Sargent's black, Black 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and M Graham's Mars Black as a glossy baseline.
My results were that Black 1.0, 2.0 & Sargent's black are almost all identical in reflection, with some tonal differences in the Sargent's. I was surprised by how flat it was, especially for the price!
3.0 is in its own ballpark! You think the other ones are black until you see it side by side with this stuff. Then they all look gray. 3.0 works best on top of 2.0. If you have a need for complete darkness, try it!

I obviously mentioned I was thinking about getting this paint. I have ordered it (well I ordered 4.0 new one) and hope it comes soon. They seem to be mixed reviews on how long it takes to ship things with so many people saying it was months or they waited months and the order was eventually refunded (various products). Don't they realise I am not a patient person? 😝
They should!!! Especially with how urgent their products drop always seem 😅 I got this one gifted to me for Christmas (love it when family knows the artists wants new weird art supplies) so sadly have no idea about the shipping side of things - if you want a sneak peek I watched a huge video by @stuffbysunshine reviewing a bunch of the more recent 'Blackest Black' stuff including 4.0 (but you might also want to wait to experience it yourself first!!)
Black 3.0 is exceptionally matte, but the problem I have with it is that it's somewhere between semi-opaque and semi-transparent, so it isn't as effective in single layers as something like Golden's Carbon Black which is extremely opaque.
It might be because the pigment they use doesn't bind as tightly - I've actually ended up using a base coat of golden so flat and a top coat of black 3.0 in a sketchbook for a beautiful velvet finish, so glad I have both!

Soflat Black is fine but the Green in Soflat is TRASH! I know what some veteran painter will say "should have thinned it Der her" duh I did using multiple ratios and multiple methods and multiple mediums and other such products balancers etc. But unlike the Black it can't be fixed it drys wrinkled no matter how thin the coat. Black applies JUST FINE!... And I use it over citidel any day or army painter because I HATE coating. I want potency AND coverage and SoFlat Black has it. "Bleep" green rawr!!!
woooooah thats so interesting! I wonder what pigment they used for it that sounds so weird, especially for a brand like Golden! Glad the black at least didn't give you trouble
