- Solo bad weather wild camp and cooking a quality meal in the Scottish Highlands, Glen Coe. In this video we are hiking to the top of the Lairig Gartain in Glen Coe which offers stunning views direction Loch Etive and direction Altnafeadh even in bad weather. The Lairig Gartain is roughly 6 km long and can be reached from Altanafeadh or Glen Etive. When approached from Altnafeadh (Glen Coe) it is often connected for a circular walk with the Lairig Eilde.

Thx for the recipe.... more low level camps with cooking is fine with me.

Ok this is my current favourite for single night out. One 250g pack of precooked Merchant Gourmet -'Spanish-Style Grains and Rice' one pack of diced chorizo(Sainsbury's stock a 2 x 75g pack) then a handful of veg such as courgette. Dry fry the chorizo to release the oil add the courgette to soften add the contents of the rice pack and add about ½ cup of water to heat and soften the rice up. Ready in about 5 minutes. The rice is precooked so if the stove fails you could still eat it out of its vacuum pack. Merchant Gourmet also do many other precooked grains in different cuisine styles. Loads of kCals still weighs less than a can of baked beans, less than £3.00 the entire meal including veg
Hi James, thank you so much for sharing! That sounds absolutely delicious. Will definitely try this one out - really like the fact that you could technically eat it cold if the stove would fail, lots of kCals and light!!! Stunning 👏👏👏
Thanks a lot James!

Hi Alistair, sure it is! Not the full circle as you did but still a great short hike and pretty empty regarding the people's traffic. 👍

Nice to see you cook something other than pasta in sauce 👌
Hahaha thanks Graham! I am usually just to lazy or want to go as light as possible - should definitely cook more often so!

I’m staying near Glen Etive in a few weeks, unfortunately not in a tent. The views should be good none the less and I’m looking forward to be outside! Really enjoyed this video and the food looked good too!
Thank you very much ThisIsMy Laine! Wish a wonderful time in Glen Etive and as you said the views are always great even if it would be cloudy...makes it just more moody/mystical👍

What a fantastic position. So sorry in later vlogs that you have changed to to 'dried' food - I understand it, but it also perhaps less 'interesting'. But 'future you' (I found this vlog after I started to follow you) I am really enjoying your journey.
Thanks a lot! Yeah I understand what you mean, the times might come back at some point in life. 👍
Looks a great spot, definitely somewhere to think about next time I'm camping there, hopefully cross paths with you at some point in future, keep up the good work
Thanks Garage 12, thankfully I am easy to spot 😃.

Brilliant spot, I'd love to know if the noise was a rock fall! ATB mate!
Thanks a lot Adventure Brews! Yeah was thinking about it for quite some time but I don't think that I could hear anything from the street (A82) - or would the sound travel through all the fog and lairig to me? And if it would have been from the street, I haven't seen or read anything about it afterwards... I assume it must have been from the hills...
Thanks a lot for watching!

Great camping site with a cracking view😍.
As a frequent visitor to Germany (especially the south) I always had great meals and although not usually mentioned in the same way as French or Italian cuisine, I really enjoyed German food and was rarely disappointed.
Hi Johnscot1, thanks a lot! Glad to hear that you enjoyed the German cuisine 😊👍
Thanks for watching!

@@StripeyHatGuy Been in quite a few places in Germany, but most frequently in a town called Biberach, kind of equidistant between Stuttgart and Munich. Do you know?
Yeah I know Biberach. I lived for nearly 4 years during my studies in Weingarten which isn't to far away 😃👍.
ATB Stripey
Great to see you out again mate! Not sure if it would be my taste (don't like mushroom's) but it looked good. 👍
Thanks MaliceGLA! Well what can I say...it is also good with just patatoe, bacon and onion fried in a pan (without cream/milk). It would be then called "Bratkartoffeln" 😂👍
Thanks for watching!

Glad you're back out Stripey. Hope your feeling better ☺️
Excellent home made mist whilst cooking btw 🤣
Stay safe!

Hi Adge yeah my back is thankfully good again in contrast to the weather 😂.
Thanks for watching mate!

Nice one stripey great views !! I think a wee currywurst would make a delicious meal on a wild camp 👍
Hi Alan! I'll take that, very good suggestion 😀🙌👍. Cheers!
ATB Stripey
great stuff, never hesitate to post easier walks like this when the weathers bad, the views are still inspiring, i have terrible trouble eating when i camp, its beaans and sausage and beans and beans, i call it cooking when i put a sachet from curried knoodles in with my beans.... i either can't face any other food or stuff like noodles just dont feel like real food.
Hi Madmacs FPV! I was actually thinking how great it would be to fly a drone through the 'narrow' bendy river but unfortunately my Mavic mini doesn't like wind and my skill is not good enough for that...*hint*.
I know what you mean with camp food usually it is about convenience + easy. We will see what the future brings but on bigger trips I will stick with the pasta with sauce I believe due to the weight, bulk, price, energy,...
Thanks a lot for watching mate!
ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy hey if you ever have a notion to fly fpv, let me know, its a lot of money up front so, have a go on a simulator and i'll let you fly one of my drones. i won't say its easy but once you can fly a little and smoothly, its an incredible experience. you can buy these kind of drones now ready to fly, then you can learn to build as you repair. its one of those things thats actually very easy if it all goes to plan, but when it doesnt, the troubleshootin is tough. and even figuring out the right question to ask on youtube can be hard.
Thank you very much Madmacs FPV! I believe so that I should stick to hills 😂, I might be wrong but when I used to 'play' with the first generation Ocolus I recognised not only the potential but also that it wasn't something for me.
And to be honest...you are not a good sales person 😂😂😂
Thanks a lot!
ATB Stripey
Oh no...just watched the wee trailer thing....no way, not without a bucket next to me!
@@StripeyHatGuy the worst thing is crashing, like being hit with a stick!
Fantastic video buddy, really enjoyed it. I see that you use a 50L for some of your trips. Do you find that size adequate for winter camping and warmer gear, etc?
Cheers from California
Hi Alex of the Mountain, thank you very much! It really depends of the trip I am doing. Usually for trips where no scramble gear is involved my 50l rucksack is sufficient - mainly as I tend to put the tent for this type of trips (scrambles) into the rucksack for protection. When I am just hiking I attach the tent to the outside and have plenty of room left - said this my gear is already pretty reduced without a lot of 'gadgets' - I use most of the time every single item I bring.
Thanks a lot for watching!
ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy thanks for the input, much appreciated 👍
You are very welcome! ATB Stripey
What is that weather app you’re using there, Stripey? Looks great!
Hi Martin, the weather app I am using is 'Clear Outside' for Android. Use it now for several years and it is particularly handy for photography I think as it shows you the cloud cover for three different heights as well as dew points and a lot more (red sky for sunset/sunrise or fog pictures) - obviously also handy for hiking. It needs a learning curve but adding the MWIS and met office you can more or less predict the conditions when it is worth going out/at least you know what to expect.
Thanks for watching!
ATB Stripey
@@StripeyHatGuy Thanks Stripey! ATB
Being a new owner of a scarp 1, it is wonderful to see the tent and your good self in action. Great videos. Wonderful views - it's like being there in person. May I ask what the extra groundsheet / footprint is?
Hi Imran congrats on you Scarp 1 and sure - I use the Lanshan 2 Pro footprint which I already had. Fits pretty good and I like the tie out points which can go into the same pegs as from the Scarp 1 so you do not need additional pegs.
Thanks for watching!
ATB Stripey
Thank you.
I love the experience of long distance walking but being in my late 50s, I'm keen to go as light as possible but safely. The tarp is a great tent for mountains (and I'm hoping to get my summer M.L. ) but at 1.8kg approx (with poles) is maybe a bit heavy for me for long hikes. I also have a Dan Durston mid -x 1p trekking pole tent which at 1kg is a delight. Your videos are a real inspiration. Thankyou.
Yeah the Scarp is a great tent for the mountains, particular in the Scottish Highlands. For the summer in the Alps I actually built my own dynamee tent (314g) but that didn't work out for me here, due to all the ticks (horrible little beast's!). Used it only 4 times and every time I got some... .When the weather permits I usually use a Lanshan 2 Pro which is a stunning little tent. Will for sure look the mentioned tents of you later up, never heard of them before! Good luck with you M.L. 🤞👍
