- Many people wrongly think that the term "theory" refers to the degree of evidence for a scientific explanation. They canter-pose this to the notion of a scientific law. They think that theory graduates to become a law as the evidence for the theory develops. But in fact this notion is totally incorrect. A law is a definite relationship amongst a few variables. Whereas a theory is a broad complex explanation explaining, involving, and or predicting many laws.

Let me first appreciate your continuing efforts to spread rationality in this society full of dogmas and fanaticism. Afterwards, I would like to inquire about the prevalent idea that the goal of Science is not about explaining why something happens the way it happens but how does it happen. We have been inculcated, from our childhood, with this idea that the Science (or Scientific thought) is to come up with the mechanics of how things work. They say Science gives answers to how things work and the religion/philosophy answers the whys of a phenomenon. Can you please guide us in this regard?
Once again, this lecture has been truly remarkable in the understanding of the differences between a law and a theory. Thanks.
In my view, scientific law explains “how” and scientific theory explains “why”.
Science is not restricted to natural phenomenon. Social science explains why wars occur. Why revolutions happen. Why states fail. Etc etc.

Any ‘law’ that you think is absolute, is only a mathematical model that best aligns with the observations found thus far and this changes as new observations are found. E.g Newtons law(which now is incorrect as in it doesnt work always) and then einstein’s general theory of relativity. We however don’t know how even this newer theory reconciles with ‘quantum gravity’ . There is no explanation until today. Some think there is something wrong with the latter anyway but no explanation nonetheless. If you want to really know what the scientific method is, try researching more into it and the actual ‘philosophy’ , the assumptions , constraints etc.. behind it.
As difficult as you might find it to grasp, as hume said “science “ is essentially the belief that the future will behave like it did in the past. My advice, don’t scrape though these topics but research more into it. These are very old topics and not at all new as folks might lead you to believe.

Dear professor, what laws are there in the theory of evolution? I was just curious to ask that are "natural selection" and "random mutation" laws? Additionally, if a theory is made that aligns with let's say creationism, but incorporates the "laws", how would we judge it compared to this theory. Much regards, I love you.
Natural Selection is a theory meanwhile
Evolution itself is a LAW. Everything goes through a process of evolution
natural selection, mutation genetic drift ..etc are mechanisms which explains the diversity of life. There are may laws inside Evolution theory one of them is law of population genetics, another one is law of phylogeny.

no, not really. Biological laws exist and they have nothing to do with Math. Physics have many theories with Mathematical explanations such as relativity Theory, Grand Unification Theory. the only valid difference is the one that Sir explained.
It is not necessary for a law to be a mathematical relationship. Newton's first and third law are not mathematically expressed.

Sir, forget about the difference between Theory and Law for a moment, Yet listen!!! that in the Holy Quran we read about Law of evolution, may be different from Darwin's. Adam was not created in a second or two, his creation occurred in stages. However, we can't accept that life came into being without a Creator as even a single cell is so much complex that one having a minute wisdom can't accept that such a complex entity came into being by itself. Before Darwin, in 8th-10th century, the Muslim Scholars have presented Evolution Theory. For example, read Jalal Ud Din Roomi, in one of his poems he has presented Evolution Theory in Four Stages. And when Darwin presented his Evolution Theory, some western scholars blamed him of stealing the theory from the Muslims. I can count many scientific theories from Quran, For examle the expansion of the Universe, the big bang theory, the mention of Computer like board, the phenomenon of rain from the clouds, Adhesive forces, rotatory motion, the concept of aeroplane as discussion of the flying of the Thrown of Hazrat Suliman (AS) by violent wind, the explanation of the installation of mountains on the earth surface, the movement of mountains as clouds do etc. Thank you Sir!

Sir can you explain String theory please in simpler language ?
Even theories doesn't explain why a phenomenon exists. For example, Einstein deduced on the basis of observation and previous work that there should be a force (gravity) to hold the space together. But he didn't explain why there is gravity at the first place.
Observing physical phenomenon is easier as we can observe them and ultimately we can create an understanding to explain how things are connected together.
The problem with the theory of evolution is that it involves a pretty large scale of time that no one has observed or recorded.
And on the other hand we have plenty of evidences in the form of divine manuscripts that humans and other creations are made that way by a creator.
Just bcz USSR-riyasat e Madinah for Marxism adopted it doesn't mean it became scientific. Prove it with solid generation by generation fossil record. İf man sprang out of ape (which can be a possibility) then where are the intermediary stages??!
Sir in that case could we reject the narrative dominance of law over theory I mean there shouldn't be a law in any aspect of life

Doosra mamala yeh hay Keh theories have a lot of imagination in them without concrete facts as the history of science is littered with multiple rejected theories ..the problem with theory of evolution is that as u said empirical evidence is hard to test in proving theories and in evolutions case specially fossil records has many gaps and to build a whole concept of science and then to call every one who does not follow that concept as illiterate is actually a kind of an extremism in itself

sir what if their is subjectivity of explanations. like we can always accept that theory which has more empirical evidence but epistemologically we cant really accept nor completely discard any theory. And i am not sure but i think that if a better theory comes with better evidences we shall discard darwinism.

I have a question, not a critique. If one accepts the theory of evolution as true then is there a point to be a part of religion?
And if one believes it is true and still believes a religion is he a mentally ill?
I don't see why the religion and the evolution can not co-exist.
I mean before all the apes and common ancestor and single life organism, there has to be something that was created, the potential of evolution in the organism that lead to us, has to came from somewhere.
1.your acceptance or rejection of evolution does not change that it is natural fact
2. The dielemma with religion is that , it definitely hurt the organised structure of religion but wait for some time before the same maulvi will say God is the force behind evolution, they dont want their authority to be demolished
