Awesome to see someone who grew up being inspired by a guy building cardboard tanks on youtube now inspiring others. RUclips has truly come full circle! PS. That mustasch and luscious hair is just sensational ;)
I'm a professional 3D Camera tracking and layout artist. I also worked on the face capture deAging from the Irishman. Tracking cameras is my thing. I did not know about fspy until this video!!!! This is going to save my butt when the client doesn't deliver proper lens grids! Thanks!
Fspy didn't provide sensor size correctly. Let say your footage was shot with 32mm sensor. Fpsy will calculate in full frame 35mm. But you can adjust sensor size in fspy.
Dude! 00:14 Is this the Casio VL-Tone from Sketchfab? :D If so, then I made this one! :D The original keyboard is right next to me on my shelf! :D If it is the one, that would be so cool! I got super excited when Wren almost picked my bowling pins for his bowling animation, but if this is actually the model I made - holy cow, this is huge for me :D (Sent this comment a second time, I think RUclips bugged... sorry if it's here twice)
Awesome stuff! A simple compositing trick I learned is using the tint effect in after effects on your cg layer. Put a blur on your footage and crank it up so its just a blob of colors. Set the black and white points in the tint effect to the darkest and lightest areas in the blurred footage (preferably near where your cg is going to be) and then remove the blur from the footage, and dial down the tint effect to something like 20-30% and bam. Can really help if your cg elements don't have the correct color tones/lighting.
I know you don’t really make videos about your music but it would be really cool to see some of your workflows for making music. I absolutely adore your style and recently started dipping my toes into synths and music production
Someone else mentioned EXRs for speed and quality, but another benefit is that they're encoded linearly and contain HDR values. Linear workflow is a necessity in digital image compositing because when the code values of the footage don't match the real life light ratios, your gradients and blending will be difficult to work with and will introduce a lot of problems like edge fringing, incorrect motion blur, inaccurate lighting, and more. This is the difference between scene referred (linear) and display referred (gamma). So instead of working on the log footage, you convert your footage to linear using either an aces IDT or other gamma converter (I believe in AE it's called color profile converter). This way it will match the EXRs coming out of blender. As a last step you can convert the whole comp back to log if you wish. Color management in AE is pretty hard to work with, which is one of the reasons I switched to Fusion a long time ago! Nuke simplifies the process a bit in much the same way blender does by applying automatic conversions on import based on file type, but I actually like doing it manually.
I fully endorse this. Trying to do a proper linear or ACES workflow based on multi-layer EXRs through AE is an absolute pain. I've switched to Fusion some time ago, but honestly Natron is also a great choice.
the thing is it's difficult to manage EXRs extremely high color depth and dynamic range to work with your phone's incredibly compressed resolution, only millions of colors and the notoriously degraded dynamic range (especially when your phone does this auto-exposure thing). i agree fp data is amazing to work with if the other components are fp data too (for example, EXRs from Blender with raw incredibly high data from IMAX negatives (processed beforehand ofc)), but for beginners, with only crappy cameras on their phones, SDR data is more than enough
@@rachelthemurph Yeah, if you don't actually have enough DR in your camera that it requires some fancy scheme like log, HLG or raw, you won't see any benefit from converting that footage to an EXR sequence. However, your render and everything else should still be in EXR format. It makes compositing so much easier when color-matching and comping.
@@sanjacobs6261 Hey, you work in Fusion? Have you some good tutorial tips for this? I'm working in Nuke and never could make the jump, since I've never found a proper tutorial. But since the license costs of nuke are so high I'm always thinking about it.
@@Armaggedon91 I do work in Fusion! However, I don't have any great tutorial-tips, I don't think, heh. Maybe it was a slow way of doing it, but I've always perferred the manual. So, I learned via the manual, asking on the Black Magic Design Discord-server and picking up a few things from Andrey Lebrov and InLightVFX's videos. They're probably worth a watch if you haven't already.
A few crucial steps missed here that I think are worth adding to the flow chart. Before the tracking phase use a program like nuke (you could use the free version) to undistort your shot and render it out with extra resolution at the edges so you don't lose detail. Back in comp, redistort your CG on top of the footage. Seems small, but this will drastically improve solve error for wide angle lenses. Also in davinci resolve use a rec709 -> linear lut (or whatever appropriate colorspace conversion) to export all footage as linear EXR sequence with DWAA compression. This will give you more flexible files to work with. That is pretty much how I do things at work. Other than those two notes this is a great workflow. You may want to consider node based software like fusion or nuke since AE can be extremely inefficient long term.
Hi thanks for the video, a query, would you recommend studying graphic design to be a 3D animator (also create your own characters, shorts, etc)? I know that in design they teach about color theory and that, would you recommend it? : )
I'm making the move to blender from Maya and it's been a bit frustrating. When following Ian's tutorial or even this one, I'm not sure how to render the footage without the background video rendering too
Hey Peter awesome video! One way to improve your workflow it is to use OpenEXR's instead of PNG's when exporting your footage. The compression and decompression of png's is painfully slow. This is why its also slow in blender. Ofc putting your files on an ssd will help as well. Hope this helps! Much love from the Netherlands!
Sorry but i would never use Contrast to convert Log Footage singe the Gamma Curve is specific to every Camera. You should take a Cameramanufacturer Konversion lut. Or convert to Linear which will be good for Compositing but not for Textures XD anyway Very Dope workflow :)
So as opposed to using ACES or linear workflow to deal with LOG footage you use the color picker and levels to essentially eyeball the CG render values so they match your LOG values? Do you run into any issues with this down the line?
Luckily I said it out loud the other day while watching some older corridor videos: "Man I wish Peter did tutorials and stuff. That would be awesome to watch and learn from" - Literally the next day your videos were suggested to me xD - Please don't stop making tutorials here and there!!!!!!
