I saw the Damned at the Roxy (London) in February 77. Gorgeous. But their concert a little later in Brussels was even more gorgeous!
during the encores (they plyed back some 4 tracks), almost half of the audience (200 guys and girls) were on stage with the band. I was just aside Brian James! Incredible times!

Great. I am 57 now also. Glad I am not younger, I would have missed this time in the world. Songs were written and performed with attitude, not ambition. That had nothing to do with it.

All four of these groups transcended "punk" and created albums which are not only amongst the most iconic punk LPs ever but also some of the greatest albums in rock history (particularly The Damned-"Machine Gun Etiquette", Rich Kids-"Ghosts Of Princes In Towers", and Generation X-"Valley Of The Dolls"). WTF? You started off alright but then lost it mate. Generation X first album is far superior to their glam rock-pop-type 2nd attempt. Can you explain the Prime of Kenny Silvers part 1 & 2 from any valid perspective? As for Rich Kids, Midge Ure should have stuck with Slik and its a shame Glen Matlock couldn't find anyone better. Must've been a dearth of singers at the time.

Ramones, Heartbreakers, Rocket from the Tomb, Gizmos, Richard Hell, Neon Boys, Wayne County, The Brats, Electric Eels….all well before the Sex Pistols! Suicide has a flyer from 1970 that says “Punk music by Suicide”. 1970!!!!

What a musical chameleon Midge Ure was, I remember him as a kid being in a sort of American highschool-looking sort of band called SLIK. They had two hits over here with great intro's (the intro's were the only good thing in these songs) such as 'requiem'. Little did I know this guy was later to be the singer in Ultravox (great band of course) and even less did i know he got asked to go on tour with thin Lizzy in his own surprise as guitarist (story goes he had to learn the solo's within' a couple of days then to be thrown into the lion's mouth and eventually didn't do too bad, so great respect!) and here he is going wild with the Rich Kids. Cheers to Midge Ure!

Midge wasn’t interested but on the backseat was a really nice vintage guitar amp so Midge bought that off them instead for peanuts apparently

The promo 7" version of "Stretcher Case (Baby) that Shel Talmy produced should have been used for the album (or, at least tacked onto reissues of MFP) as it is (IMO) a far superior track.
They are going to have to pad the set out with a few extra songs from around that era...covers ("Disguises" "Help" "Looking at You" etc) and, possibly, songs that cover the pre-transition to (but not recorded for) MGE such as "You Can't Trouble Trouble" etc...) otherwise the fans will be shilling out heavily for a 50 min set!

I believe that The Damned and The Adverts were not long off a tour of UK colleges and halls at this point in time...perhaps a couple of months had passed in which Rat had left and, Dave Berk filled in until Jon Moss came on board just in time for the "original" band to implode.
I recently found out that Jim Walker (Public Image, The Pack, The Straps, Vancouver's The Furies) auditioned to step into Rat's (massive) shoes on drums for The Damned...he might have been a better choice than Moss as he beat the hell out of a kit in much the same way as Rat. He told me that he was happy as hell just bashing out Neat Neat Neat, 1970 and, New Rose with such great players.
It has been rumoured that Brian, Captain, and, Dave selected Jon Moss because he was a lot less vocal and, a lot less exhausting to play/tour with than Scabies. Jon was a good drummer and he was quiet and, knew his place within The Damned. Other auditioning drummers were either not up to the task or, up to the task but far too strong as personalities within the band dynamic.
Jim was likely the best or, "damn" close to being the best drummer they auditioned.
Best drummer Public Image had until they had Bruce Smith join up (interestingly enough...Bruce played with PIL when Lu Edmonds did...the six degrees of punk rock separation here is nutty!)
And, I just marvel watching Bob "Derwood" Andrews (just turned 17 here) just sizzlin on guitar. Bob and Mark Laff were a formidable force!!

Second Guitarist must be Lu Edmonds? Why is he not in the line up for the forthcoming tour of the original lineup ? I know he didn't join until the second LP, but are they just gonna play; Damned Damned Damned, and then leave the stage? They have had so many lineups, and so many Lp's ! I think it was part of a journalistic backlash at "The New Thing" (I.e: Punk Rock) in general. I don't think out of objection to the style but more out of the novelty and thrill of 1976 and the early part of 1977 having worn off. The Stranglers, The Jam and The Clash were all castigated by the press for their second albums as well and each of those albums at least rivalled and, on occasion, surpassed their initial efforts.

Richard Hewit - No Algy Ward was their bass player by the time of Machine Gun Etiquette with Sensible on guitar and ‘experimental’ keyboards.
Brian James did various things after leaving The Damned, including co forming Lords of the New Church, collaborating with Mick Jones again writing a film soundtrack and touring with Iggy Pop.
He also formed his own ‘super group’ The Brian James Band and toured extensively.
In 2013 He got back together with Rat and did a countrywide tour of The Damned’s music.
So for one summer only you had 2 groups touring The Vanian/Sensible one and the Scabies/James one !
