Mikal Gilmore was, as you note, Gary’s younger brother. The reason he came to write the book is kind of stunning. Mikal was a staff writer at Rolling Stone. When the story broke, the editor-in-chief of the magazine (Jann Wenner) _assigned him to cover the death of his own brother_.
Can I just point out that it was the corneas that were used, not the whole eyes. No way are you transplanting an entire eye (with the attendant nerve, muscle and vein/artery attachment) from one person to another with 70s medical technology. Heck, I'm not even sure it's feasible today.
I'm old now but I remember the song and story it sounded pretty gruesome at the time much more than it would now didn't know what that says it sounds like the Yardbirds song for your love with the descending at the end feel. Thank for the vid 🥺
Great Back story, thanks for the detail! I think Tommy Lee Jones played him in the film! Fantastic story, which inspired an Amazing song by the 'very underrated' British original 1977, pUnK band 'The Adverts' ! dx
Just listened to the song again x2 bouncing off the cupboards and walls in my kitchen. I am 59 and this used to be my fav pun I song back in the days. It has a story and intensity that builds up throughout the song , if you know the words, you can not stop yourself shouting them outloud. Fantasic...And the end "Gary don't need his eyes to see. Gary and his eyes have parted company" WOW. Your right be careful which version of the song you listen to, some later re-recordings are awfull .
Cole Wheeler .It's the short lived Burns Flyte bass from the mid 70s. I remember Marc Bolan played tha 6 string version. It was meant to look like the Concorde airliner.

Dude, if you want to be a "real punk rocker" you need to lose that nerdy 'tache. I peak as a member of the Class of '77: take a look at the record sleeves of every punk record ever made - not a single moustache on display there. Glad you like the music of my youth though... keep up the good work!
And here comes TIM COOPER giving out free tips on how to look more punk! Go tell that to the ghost of GG Allen and then go clock in as the stockboy at Hot Topic. Punk is an ethos not a fashion statement. It's about not listening when posers tell you everything should look the same. Think McFly!!! Think!!! Least 'punk' thing I may have ever heard.... piss off 👊

garry and his eyes have parted company
Awsome backstory
One of my favourite songs, and the story behind it is as interesting as the song itself.

Thanks for the story on this, Matthew. I'd never have known. ... Been following Dream Machine's progress ever since you guys appeared on Gutfeld!
Thanks for following along! Greg is a trip. He is very short in real life. I am trying to get him to invest in a company I am starting

Love The Adverts! I knew Gary agreed to donate his organs, but I had no idea they actually used his eyes for transplantation!
You gotta be kidding. That's so awesome
Just the Corneas.
The whole eyeballs are no use when the optic nerves are cut.
Whoa, that even crazier, it's hard to imagine that's even possible
@@dreammachine432 The corneas are the only usable part of the eyes.
SHOT IN THE HEART by Mikal Gilmore is a great book
The Executioner's Song-Norman Mailer
My duuuuuuude
👍👍👍👍👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The donor recipients only received the corneas, not the whole of the eye, lol.
That's crazy
@@dreammachine432 oh eye, err, I mean, oh aye! 🤣
What’s the story on That bass’ headstock?! Pointy!!
I think it's a Vox bass. Yes, they made guitars and basses as well
I noticed that too, looks awesome

If you're going to take a look at a song - the first thing would be to get the title of it correct.
Oh yeah?
If you are going to correct someone, it would help if you were right!
