TV Smith is the real deal. A throwback troubadour type with a unique writing talent and a performing charm. Gary Gilmore's Eyes is one of my favourite songs ever. Pure genius.
One chord wonders. Top punk song. , pity gilmores was a copy of the rats mondays. Destroyed their punk credentials. Met tv in the bar at barberellas ,brum. Great company.
The BBC deserve credit, no mainstream channel does the sheer number of excellent music docs. All genres with the addition of all those decades of archive footage too. Often being fascinating even when about artists/groups you may not have had much interest in before.
A few years ago I toured with the band AMEN in the UK and Europe. TV opened a few shows on the UK leg of the tour... again, just him and an acoustic guitar. The first night we all waited and watched nervously to see how the crowd would react; here's a silver-haired "old man" (no disrespect to Tim, but that's what the kids would most likely view him as) on stage with just an acoustic guitar, when they all came to see a loud, heavy, antagonistic punk/metal band. Even TV himself seemed to be unsure as to how well it would potentially go over (if I remember correctly). To me (coming from the States, where crowds are often full of drunk, disrespectful assholes) it almost seemed like a recipe for disaster. TV got on stage, started playing... and he had the crowd's full attention from the very first song. Everyone loved it. Every other show went the same way... nothing but respect and great responses all around. I was personally blown away by how powerful one man with a guitar could be, and (as someone who had just started listening to The Adverts at the time) how amazing TV's lyrics were. Tim and Gaye are two of the most amazing, down to Earth people I have ever met (and if I'm being completely honest, Gaye is still smokin' hot). It's a shame The Adverts never really caught on or found the success they truly deserved, because in my opinion TV Smith is one of the greatest and most unsung songwriters of that era.
off to see TV Smith this weekend! first heard "expensive being poor" on the charity album "seka / sister" and listened to that thing 10000 times. can't wait to meet the man himself!!!!!!
Not everyone is like that. "New directions in the old" (ray hearne) and "‘Whence will renewal come to us-to us ‘who have defiled and emptied the whole earthly globe? From the past alone, if we love it’ (Gravity and Grace, ‘Social Harmony’, page 155).
I liked the way this programme (if it's the same one) mentioned Driver's way of playing drums; it's very rare that drummers, as drummers, are even mentioned in this type of programme, let alone acknowledged as an important part of the group's sound. The Buzzcocks' drummer played a massive part in their sound, and so does Driver here.
Tim was so much more than the Adverts regardless how brilliant his early work is, the solo material elevates to another plain and show the tremendous song writing ability, the beauty, energy and relevance of the songs. He is one of the great songsmith's this country has ever produced.
"Last Words of the Great Explorer" and "Channel 5" are 2 of my most treasured records. Wonderful. I'm so excited to have discovered this documentary. Nice one, BBC!
Lovely inspiring man. I've never been much of a fan of The Adverts or his other work, but that takes nothing away from his passion and dedication to his craft. Thanks.
"We Who Wait" was always my favorite song from the Adverts... Didn't know the documentary about them is named after it until now. .. Great respect for TV Smith and the Adverts
'21', 'Bored Teenagers' and 'Gary Gilmore' are works of genius. As the work never reached me, after The Adverts, I never heard his later stuff, until this documentary. Thanks for posting.
Loved the Adverts and used to watch the Explorers at the Greyhound pub in Fulham Palace Road with Gaye watching on. Great times! Enjoyable TV programme, will try and catch him in concert.
A very different documentary...and yet, I love it. I also like the approach and the time they into this documentary...I can tell they put a whole lot of hard work into it to keep it fresh and relevant as it was nearly 35 years ago. The Adverts will always be a damn great and influential band that should not be forgotten. TV Smith is a pure genius, and Gaye Advert is beauty that will never be topped.
thanx for this super documentary! MY hero! TVSmith the very best musician on this planet! saw him again tonight in berlin wild@wildatheart xberg ...amazing concert!
I miss the original 12 Bar Club on Denmark Street :( My band used to rehearse in the studio round the back and managed to play at the venue last December before it closed down.
Very nice that HEAVY METAL KIDS got a mention !! I had the great firtune of seeing him in NY . Backed by a great punk band THE MÌDNIGHT CREEPS . Who had a a very similar feel to Adverts . Not on puropse but solid simple ric bass ,un sophisticated guitar, solid drums . And TV on top . Close as I'll ever get . SOLID SEND !!! As closec
Yes real respect for this man as `I watched him on Gareth Icke's show tonight on The Peoples Voice a true musician and a great documentary . Keep on trucking rock music needs people like you to set the kids an example.Very entertaining
a good friend of mine, John Kinhart interviewed two of the members on this doc. I am posting this on Facebook, John is a great cartoonist too and we just did a comic book together
"Comparing Edward Van Halen to the Adverts is humorous" He was trying to make a point about being a "virtuoso" versus being "real" unfortunately he picked the wrong virtuoso, because Eddie was both, and anyone who thinks Eddy plays "incoherently" genuinely knows very little, there are dozens of guitarists he could have picked, but he went for the most famous one to make a point and ended up sounding rather silly
definitely one of my favourite bands and such a shame it all just fell apart for Smith because he clearly has the talent, but too many wrong decisions were made
love Gaye & tim, lovely couple , I met them through a friend of mine Johnny waller who wrote for the defunct `sounds` music paper...Great people....Tim is a great songwriter too....very underrated. ..never seen this before...intreasting
The greatest punk band ever. True to the basic values never sold out love this band. Have introduced people in there 20,s to these fuckas and had nowt but a possitive big YES. TV Smith fucken living legend Gaye Advert you were the girl pinned on my bedroom wall loved yu. Who ever made this documentary about, well done fucken time glad to see that some one at the bbc appreciates a bit of British culture.Ahm off to cross the red sea.
Old men from the punk days like the Adverts final drummer here Rod Latter so obviously dyeing their hair jet black in their 60s look so bloody ridiculous.....grow old gracefully fellas ffs!!
IT is A SHAME THE DEBUT ALBUM WAS SO BAD, CAST OF THOUSANDS HAD TERRIBLE PRODUCTION, LIVE AT THE ROXY SOUNDED BETTER, I'm shouting again... GG eyes was OK, and their gigs were nothing to write home about, Let's be honest they were not even B-grade punk, they grade C
I agree about the debut sound quality, but IMHO they were not only A-grade punk band, they were one of the few punk bands that sounded original, unlike 90% of others who blindly copyied Sex Pistols I always considered mediocre and boring. John Lydon is only one I fully respect and he proved everybody in PIL he is great musician.
"I don't really see him as a punk song writer at all".. Clichés! Stereotypes! So a punk song writer can not be poetic or intelligent? Let's get rid of all those boring old farts in the punk documentaries. Let the punks define themselves.
Every T.V. Smith song is the same damn song. The sky's falling in blah blah blah blah blah. The most interesting thing about The Adverts was that Gaye was very good looking. And still is.
howard was my friend, miss that lanky northern bugger lots, you never did fulfill your dream of living in france, so i did it for you, and you were right, its awesome

I always liked The Adverts but after watching this I have so much more respect for T.V Smith keep on rockin man

Gotta bow down to that zeitgeist to sell soap and beer
@@sosrope3420 what the fuck does that mean?

You have my deepest respect! I Saw something similar at Holidays in The Sun 2003 but with Shane Macgowan (solo)! It was a real special moment!

Cuz the 2nd album Cast of1000,s was a pure flop . 👎👎🤘🤘
100% true punk band. One of the first, one of the best. Happy days buying their 45s.
The amaturish unique sound GENIUS!! !Most joyuus of days.....

Excellent probably the most enjoyable music documentary I've seen and what great music!
What a beautiful journey thoroughly enjoyed that thanks for sharing . TV SMITH LEGEND
'21', 'Bored Teenagers' and 'Gary Gilmore' are works of genius. As the work never reached me, after The Adverts, I never heard his later stuff, until this documentary. Thanks for posting.
"Last Words" and "Channel 5" are THE peak of TV's output.
Superb!!! "Last Words of the Great Explorer", "Channel 5" and "Cast of Thousands" are simply wonderful LPs.
Loved the Adverts and used to watch the Explorers at the Greyhound pub in Fulham Palace Road with Gaye watching on. Great times! Enjoyable TV programme, will try and catch him in concert.

I always liked Cast of Thousands. Sure, it's not on par with 'Crossing' but preciously few albums are.
Yes real respect for this man as `I watched him on Gareth Icke's show tonight on The Peoples Voice a true musician and a great documentary . Keep on trucking rock music needs people like you to set the kids an example.Very entertaining
This man is the real deal. March of the giants is a an absolute masterpiece
brilliant ! Shows how fulfilling a life you can have if you don't sell out or compromise .. it is not all about the money :)
One of the best bands.
a good friend of mine, John Kinhart interviewed two of the members on this doc. I am posting this on Facebook, John is a great cartoonist too and we just did a comic book together
GREAT rockumentary!
Comparing Edward Van Halen to the Adverts is humorous. Both have their place in the art of music history, and show the dichotomy of what works.
There's room in my record collection for the first VH album and Cast of Thousands.
"Comparing Edward Van Halen to the Adverts is humorous"

Great gig tonight lad
well researched enjoyable documentary indeed...thank you....
Fucking great to see Tim smiling after all these years of people's ambivalence.
Excellent, good to see him with The Damned again in Newcastle. TV can't do anything wrong in my book.
definitely one of my favourite bands and such a shame it all just fell apart for Smith because he clearly has the talent, but too many wrong decisions were made
Gaye is even more atractive now than she was back then.
😂..i dont agree .she was...sooooo goddamn. Sexy..as a 13 year old punk in 1976...omg .she was..a goddess..❤
Only because 45-50 years later you’re still the same age as her….If you were still a teenager you wouldn’t think so 😅😅😅
love Gaye & tim, lovely couple , I met them through a friend of mine Johnny waller who wrote for the defunct `sounds` music paper...Great people....Tim is a great songwriter too....very underrated. ..never seen this before...intreasting

And the truest punk bands never signed up to the big labels but The Adverts did 🤣🤣
Menace ATV Chelsea now there's an example of non sell outs 🤘🤘👍👍
" Heavy Metal Kids" .....some influence...🖐👺
@Danielmedina agree:)
The Clash & the Pistols made all the headlines, but they never made a perfect album-the Adverts did & it still sounds fuckin marvellous now
The Bollocks IS a perfect album .
You don't think the clash debut was a perfect album.
What planet are you on?!
Crazy opinion u have there!
viva tv smith!!
My telly still doesn't work!
T.V Smith is an example
bombsite boy....
If anyone can throw Token of my Love up on youtube..;. I'd be entirely grateful!
The adverts never got the praise
be thankful they didn't otherwise they'd end up like all those trash bands that ruined their own sound for the sake of a sack of cash.
#antifrostvision freut dierer #englörnerclip #tvsmith
Old men from the punk days like the Adverts final drummer here Rod Latter so obviously dyeing their hair jet black in their 60s look so bloody ridiculous.....grow old gracefully fellas ffs!!
Bored old age pensioners.

Calm down dear.🎉
Sadly the music just kept getting worse. Hard to know who it was aimed at.
Every T.V. Smith song is the same damn song. The sky's falling in blah blah blah blah blah. The most interesting thing about The Adverts was that Gaye was very good looking. And still is.
+Highland Fleet Lute you're right mate and for that the BBC made a documentary for him
+Pater Emeritus ....well, not really.
+Arianrhod Hyde Should have made a documentary about Gaye.
+Highland Fleet Lute gaye was sound, yeah, but the band's pretty solid.
This is Laurie driver, your full of it.YOU ANY GOT A CLUE.
Such a great songwriter, singer and artist. Bravo Tim, may your songs ring out forever!
howard was my friend, miss that lanky northern bugger lots, you never did fulfill your dream of living in france, so i did it for you, and you were right, its awesome
I went to school with Howard's younger brother. RIP Howard.
excellent fear and loathing t-shirt on the guitarist. They can't have been easy to get in the 70's.
